when have anyone on here seen a team have 3 tds stolen by disturbingly tilted/inept refereeing, and another 3 dropped by usually sure-handed receivers and still beat a top 6 state ranked team by half a hundred? even the abilene faithful saw the mistakes by a seemingly disoriented stripey-crew.
i wonder if coach leach is still having worries about which qb recruit is going soft on their commit? i am not degrading potts, but am tooting mcelroy's status. i am still hoping for an acu decision too.
please, will all you experts who have declared the 05 dragons to be less than previous dragon teams tell me how you came to that erroneous conclusion? i guess the most prevalent explanation will be that ahs was way over-rated, to which i somewhat agree. and that they had a down game. maybe, but they could play 10 times and the results would be similar.
congrats to the ahs faithful. your crowd was awesome to see and hear before the game. i believe the 20k estimates for ahs were pretty accurate.

I watched their highlights on FSN last night late. They definitely look like the real deal. Gonna be some fun these next few weeks. Will anyone knock off SLC? I know there is some team out there than *can*, but *will* it happen?:D

DD - every sports writer in Abilene picked SLC to win - how often do you see that? SLC appears totally unbeatable this year - it's a shame the D1 chips didn't fall correctly to at least give us poor country folk a chance.

having listened to several pack games this year, i'm convinced the pack has the defense to stay in a rerematch. i don't know whether the lp offense has come around some, but that game has been in the headlights for a long time. good luck today and next week, too.

the sfsa field has field turf, doesn't it? that'll help.
I remain confident in my opinion that the SLC running game is not as good as it has been the past 2 seasons. The passing game may be as good, and the defense may be better than ever, but Newton isn't THAT good and the D has not faced a real physical challenge yet.

1) 2 diff styles of running game...to say one is better than other is not accurate...
2) not played any physical team...if you all the teams played, which one would tell you they were not physical

Newton doesn't run tough. I've said it before. He's fast. Very fast. But on his long runs, look at how much open space he has to run. I'd like to see him actually use vision, make a cut, run through some tackles. In the 2 games I've seen him play, none of these were part of his arsenal.
SLC has not played anyone who tried to line it up and run it or pass it right at them and through them. Everyone they've played so far (especially in the playoffs) has tried to beat the Dragons at their own game. This is not the way to compete with SLC. No one can run the spread and score like SLC can. So why try and do that to beat them? I-Mac, Allen, Abilene? All spread teams. All losers. I want to see the SLC prove their strength against a real offense that doesn't try to avoid contact and run around the defense.

sl is very balanced offense...each set is used to build an entire gameplan, not just showcase an individual talent! coach calls the game with the style runner available...also, the trey is just 15, hits hole as fast as any kid on film this year...thats uncoachable, the vision will come with experience.

Nate, you obviously weren't there last night. If you had been, you would have seen Newton run through people and make several great cuts to gain big yards. My concern with him is with all of the spinning and fighting he is doing prior to going down, he is taking lots of shots, and hopefully he doesn't ake another one to the head. They have beaten team the last 3 weeks with a combined record of 30-3 and shut them all out in the 1st halves by 110-0.
So what team will beat them based on your "knowledge" of their weaknesses?

It was one thing after another. Even with the big screen there to show it all, they continued to blow it. How about that spot on the last drive by AHS? They gave them easily an extra yard and the 1st down. They were trying to prevent a shutout harder than the AHS coaches were. Surprised they didn't find a way to give them that TD wiht a minute to go, though he was clearly out.
For you to complain DD, I know it was really bad. You are not one to whine.
If I am reading your posts correctly, I believe you are saying this team is better overall than last year's. That is my opinion today. Based on the last 3 games, they are on a whole new level.

they all rode together in uncle tunas rv. he was really impressed with their play, esp the defense. i'm sure they all would have suited up in a heartbeat.
this team is just so deep in wr's. even our backups are running around wide open, i bet they feel lonely. the defense has hit its stride and is playing with the reckless abandon a big lead and a high-octane offense allows. i keep expecting next week to be the real test.

Sorry Nate that the Dragons continue to disappoint you.
52-0 last night vs. #6 Abilene
45-15 vs. Allen
48-21 vs. Irving Mac.
110-0 first half scoring in three playoff games.
60-1 over the last 4 seasons.
The Dragons have high standards, but apparently you have higher standards. Man I feel sorry for those Argyle kids. If SLC doesn't impress you, then by your standards, the Argyle fb program is a total wreck. I mean look, they've lost three games in one season. Forshame:eek: Who cares if they're in the playoffs.Tre rushed for 138 yards as a 15 year old in Texas 5A 3rd round playoff game. I don't think thats to bad.You call Irving Mac, Allen, and Abilene losers, fyi they have a combined record of 30-6.
If the Dragons beat Plano next week, will that draw a compliment, or do we have to wait till the Dragons record is 16-0? Have a nice day:D
SL Carroll - 52
Abilene - 0
WACO – It was supposed to be one of the state’s best playoff games of the year, one that would feature a clash of nationally ranked, unbeaten titans.
But like most of Southlake Carroll’s football games this season, Friday’s Class 5A Division II Region I semifinal turned into another blowout.
Carroll looked like the nation’s top-ranked team in front of roughly 33,000 fans, routing Abilene, 52-0, at Floyd Casey Stadium. The game pitted Carroll, ranked No. 1 in the Prep Football Poll and Student Sports Fab 50 national poll, against an Abilene team ranked No. 21 in the Student Sports Fab 50.
“We knew Abilene was undefeated. We just came out ready to play,” said Carroll receiver Evan Fentriss, who had three touchdown receptions. “We didn’t want to let them in it.
“Kill their will. That was Coach Dodge’s main goal for us.”
Carroll (13-0) has been unstoppable in the first half in its three playoff games, outscoring its opponents, 110-0. Abilene (12-1) trailed, 31-0, at the half and couldn’t find an answer for quarterback Greg McElroy. The senior, who has orally committed to Texas Tech, threw for 152 passing yards and two touchdowns in the half.
McElroy finished with 256 yards and three touchdowns on 15-of-23 passing. Fentriss caught four passes for 98 yards, including touchdowns of 34, 26 and 30 yards.
Carroll needed seven plays to score its first touchdown, a 14-yard strike from McElroy to McKay Jacobson. On the ensuing kickoff, Greg Lehane recovered a fumble by Abilene’s Bryson Walker. Six plays later, Carroll scored again as McElroy connected with Fentriss.
Carroll’s run game was as impressive as its passing attack. Tre’ Newton rushed for 138 yards on 15 carries and scored on runs of 2 and 44 yards. Carroll finished with 479 total yards.
“This time we carried it out through the whole game and not just the first half,” Fentriss said.
Carroll’s defense played one of its most complete first halves of the season, forcing one turnover on downs and intercepting two Abilene passes. Abilene quarterback Taylor Potts, who also has committed to Texas Tech, threw his first pick to Anthony Ford, who raced 28 yards for Carroll’s fourth touchdown of the night.
Carroll held Abilene to 273 total yards, 163 of those coming in the second half. The defense recorded five sacks, and Potts threw interceptions to Ford, Scott Simpson and Joseph Agnew.
“It doesn’t have to be close. We want to blow everybody out,” Simpson said. “A lot of people were questioning if we were really better than them [Abilene]. We just wanted to leave no doubt.”
Carroll will get either Plano or Midland in the 5A Division II Region I final next week.

Let me start by saying I was at the game.
Coach Mendoza told me before the game that they were not going to let up. Abilene's coach had been running his mouth all week. Just a litlle FYI to everyone, Dodge will, if given the chance, make you wish you didn't do that.
The 05 defense is the best that has been around. That is saying something about them when you look back at who has come through here. This is a tight bunch all the way around.
I could throw for 300 yards with the protection that the o-line gives McElroy. The receivers are ridiculous. Speaking of receivers, what is with Renfro's cockyness? I guess one good season makes it ok to act like an *** the rest of your highschool career. I bet the first time some gets a chance to deliver a knockout, he will. Newton is a good back. He goes down at first touch. I would be curious how many yards he had in the first half when it mattered. For those waiting for him to be Luna. Quit. He won't and can't be. I'm not bashing the kid, he just isn't. He works for THIS team now.
Our special teams, and by that I mean our kickoff coverage, is nice to see. For the first time in years we don't let the opponent start of the 40 everytime we kickoff. I sure wish we had Ortega back.
As for Abilene. They brought a ton of people. Sad to see them go after the first half. If you drove that far, you might as well stay. The defense misses their linebacker Carroll really bad. Not much speed on the corners. The kick return played with a ton of heart. The little back was quick and made a lot out of not much on several occasions.
McElroy was better than Potts. Potts would put his head down and walk to the end of the bunch and stand alone when he wasn't playing. He was beat by quarter 1. If the rumors were true about him being soft to Tech after McElroy committed. I bet they are firm now. McElroy is in a different league when it comes to passing the ball.

As a neutral observer at the game, the referees were absolutely horrible. Frankly, some of those guys looked like they had no business on a football field. The offensive pass interference called early on SLC was a joke. I was looking right at the play, and there was no interference. On top of that, the official blows his whistle and starts signaling to stop the clock right in the middle of the play. On that play, you throw the flag but continue to let the play run. They blamed it on an "inadvertant whistle". There were several other questionable calls. SLC supporters are on the money on this one.

Coach Dodge started at Southlake in 2000 so this years senior class is Todd's first that has gone through his system starting in the 7th grade......no wonder they are a powerhouse! These kids have been preparing for this season since they were 11 and 12 year olds....they have grown up together and that chemistry is evident on the field, and probably 10 or more kids on this team will play on Saturdays. A couple might even play on Sundays....
I think even Todd is at a lose for words right now.....he knew that this would be his greatest team, but no one could have predicted these massacres......don't be surprised if he calls it a day after this seasons state championship and moves on to the college ranks....

SLC is better overal, there D is so much better and so much deeper at WR. Get off of Newton's back. He is a soph competing at a #1 team in the nation level. He runs too tough and has had a couple concusions this year. The problem is Luna spoiled people with how smart he was. SLC does not have the names this year that people knew last year. EVERYBODY knew who Chase and Luna was. I mean they know Renfro, who is struggling some this year to start off and a few know Jacobson. Next year they have Newton at rb and Dodge at Qb and they just fill in at wr...wow. I mean do not get me wrong renfro and jacobson are special but when SLC won its first 5a champ the WR were not what they have now but put up goddy numbers. 3 wr over a 1,000 yards recieving, they just know their system and run it to perfection. They have to beat themself and the other team has to make SLC pay for their mistake. Can not wait for SLC and Cove match-up. Would love to see Spring westfield SLC but we will never know.

After watching both Potts and McElroy play Friday night, I think it was pretty evident to anyone watching the game who the superior quarterback was. It wasn't even close.........McElroy has had superlative coaching and it shows in how polished he is fundamentally and his poise in the pocket...Taylor seemed to lack pocket awareness and mobility....having Todd Dodge coach you everyday is a qb's dream...system or no system...you don't develop two straight (and maybe now McElroy) state players of the year if you don't know what you are doing......
Abilene's head coach made a major mistake in talking to the press about how Potts was the better qb......and I bet Coach Dodge reminded McElroy of that several times before kickoff.......
No team will be able to compete with SLC......the only way they lose is by beating themselves.....and I just don't see that happening....not this year!

Now thats just absurd, SLC is VERY good, yes, but to say no-one can compete is just downright foolish, any given day a team can win (or have the chance like '04 SV) but its up to them to put the final nail in the coffin, and so far no-one has done it.

SLC is much better than last season and Abilene High was not as good as last season and then to commit turnovers the way the Eagles did, they were fortunate the score was worse. The 52-0 whipping the Eagles received was much worse than the score indicated.
Future opponents should not line up defensively every play in a 3 man front if you want to stop the rushing game. It is not a bad idea to let them run every once in awhile as the passing game is more deadly. One other thing that will help you stay on the field with them would be to get some pressure on their qb. Abilene High failed to do that and given the time will find a receiver.
