OK... I don't normally get wrapped around the axle about stuff like this, but there were a couple of things that really burned me at tonight's Plano/Duncanville game.
1. National Anthem - Plano was the home team. Being the home team conveys a few privileges. Among those privileges is the idea that your band gets to play the National Anthem. The Plano band was on the field. The PA guy announced the Plano band and introduced the anthem. Tha Plano band began to play the anthem... when suddenly some woman with a microphone began singing the anthem. Different key. Different tempo. She stood on the Texas Stadium star on the fifty yard line, facing the visitor's side (bothersome) with HER BACK TO THE FLAG (maddening). After a few awkward seconds, the Plano band director just stopped the band. When it was over, she walked back over to the Duncanville sideline. WTF?
2. Halftime - Duncanville has an awesome band. It's always a treat to see them - especially in the playoffs because UIL marching is over and they can do more fun stuff. Tonight, each team was allocated 12 minutes for their halftime show. Duncanville's band played for about a minute, and then spent the next 13 minutes introducing all of their seniors, talking about their achievements, and introducing their parents. It was the most mind-numbingly boring halftime show in the history of organized sports - and that includes the Super Bowl halftime show that featured "Up with People." About a minute after their time expired, the formed the "Duncanville D," played the fight song, and left. WTF?
I'm all for "Senior Night;" and I really do think that the seniors in the band deserve recognition; but that should occur at the final home game of the regular season. What if they had missed the playoffs? Would the band kids just go without recognition? And I bet a lot of fans who were waiting for the late game had a stroke about halfway through.
Duncanville's team played hard tonight. They deserve some props for playing their hearts out in a tough game; but the rest of the game presentation was really bizarre.

Duncanville's halftime show tonight, hands down was the worst thing I've ever seen at a football game. I was looking for Gordon Keith to come out and pull my pants down after that....

The problem with the Duncanville band is that there is that the Band Director answers to the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT at Duncanville High School because it falls into the "fine arts" category. The band members were pissed that the football team made it to the playoffs because none of them wanted to perform another time, and you know that the English Department Head could care less about the football team or the playoffs. Also, due to the fact that the game was at 6:00, they couldn't leave until the normal bus routes were over. The football team rode in charters, but the band had to wait for the yellow dogs. They got seven yellow dogs, when they usually travel in fifteen. Poor planning on the English department. It's sad that the second largest school (square footage wise) in the nation and the #6 band in the state doesn't have anybody that cares about anything other than band competition. When they figure out that the majority of people in Texas come to the game for FOOTBALL and not the band, they might be much better and care a little bit more about what people paid to see.

It was a HUGE waste of school dollars.
We also had to wait for the to take their seats before they played their school song.

They should have all stayed home and let the DJ that played the pregame music in the D-ville end zone just play more music at half time!
