After three seasons as the head football coach at Central High, Steve Heryford has been reassigned.

The announcement came this morning, six days after Heryford's Bobcats finished an 0-10 season, just the third winless campaign in the program's history.

Heryford, a Midland native and graduate of Greenwood High School, was hired in spring 2006 to replace Bob Bellard.

He had previously been a head coach at Del Rio and Tahoka and had really made a name for himself with Central fans and players as defensive coordinator on the Bobcats 2003 state quarterfinalist team.

His first season as head coach of the Bobcats in 2006, he went 6-6 and won a first-round playoff game.

The next year, he was 5-6 and lost in the first round. Central finished last year with three straight losses, and 10 more this season had the Bobcats in the midst of the second-longest losing streak in program history.

Heryford's overall record at Central was 11-22.

This season, the Bobcats never got going after blowout losses to open the season against a pair of state-ranked teams, Copperas Cove and Odessa Permian. They were also beset by injuries, which forced them into playing four kids at quarterback.

This was the first season since 2002 that Central had not made the playoffs, although this was the first season the Bobcats were playing in a 10-team District 2-5A after a decade in a six-team district.

"I'm going to serve here or serve somewhere else," Heryford had said Friday after the season ending loss. "I have faith in God that that's going to be taken care of. I try not to spend too much time thinking about it. I'm going to do what's best for these young men as long as that's my job. When that's not my job, I'll go do it somewhere else."

The district said Heryford will, for the present time serve as an administrative intern with SAISD.

He was an idiot.

He agreed to play Carroll in Southlake two consecutive years, instead of the typical home and home series. Why would you agree to make that drive just to get your butt spanked hard twice?

Fortunately there are some people with some sense in San Angelo who wouldn't sign the deal. 0-10 says he should have been scheduling 3A and 4A schools.

This move was wait on the end of the season to arrive...
If you can't get/keep potential players...into a uniform...you got to go...

He makes the playoffs in two of his three seasons (even winning a playoff game). His team moves to a much larger district, has major injuries to key players in his third season and is canned:confused:

He should apply at Notre Dame. Charlie Weis has done much worse and is still around.

This would be a great chance for a coach. No expactions for 3 years, can only improve and get paid for doing it. What a deal!!!!:D

Fair enough. I'm very critical of only one event and he may have been great on a lot of other things.

Grapevine went 0-10 (I'm in the Colleyville Heritage zone) and I'm critical of the coach regardless of some good years in the past.

Bad teams happen to good coaches I suppose.

Another year for Heryford was probably fair but obviously the people above him lost faith.

In high school you hace to build a "program" - this includes changing attitudes, getting the facilities in shape, putting together an off season program, getting involved with the youth teams and middle schools, put together a staff etc. (you know things that you see at SLC, Trinity, Katy, Lufkin and so forth) -- I don't believe you can get that done in 3 years.

I don't know what he was like but maybe he didn't pocess those skills -- some great co-ords will NEVER make great or even good Head Coaches.
