How much faster than the "speed limit" do you usually drive on the highway? If there's no traffic, of course....

poll is private, so no worries :outlaw

If I'm in Houston( metro) I flow with traffic.

I avoid the packs and want to see where I am going.

Anyone familiar with "Smith Systems" driving techniques knows how I drive.

If we're driving to Lubbock or somewhere and we're on the open road, I set the cruise at 75.

All in all, I think speed limits are pretty stupid, besides special situations like schools, residentials, and construction areas. They are little more than a way to generate money for local and state gov'ts.

yesterday I saw people driving 50 in a 60 zone in pouring down rain, and was impossible for them to stop in time if something happened in front of them. The speed limit on a road is not nearly as important as driving conditions, vehicle conditions, or the ability of the driver.

I have never understood the rationality of engineering our cars and our roads for speed and then imposing a 55 mph limit or even 70 mph for that matter.

Like many things in society, we dumb things down to an average. Most people can handle driving 55 mph safely, so that's the limit for everyone.

Get the right car, driving skills and road conditions and faster speeds are safe.

this.

Interstates (outside of cities) are designed for 100 mph speeds, as are most cars (crappy foreign imports aside).

I usually avoid packs if I'm just cruising (you can watch for speed traps easier :D), but I always drive safely.

I cruise at 4 mph over the limit. I have taken defensive driving three times for tickets all 20+ over the limit. Not worth it. Sometime in December I'll be safe to drive over the limit and take defensive driving (can only do it once every 12 months) but I won't.

Asked me this couple of years ago it would be 15+. Used to drive down 183 and Mopac 95+ mph.

I always push for almost exactly 5 MPH faster than the speed limit on any road except school zones. You almost always get a cushion of 5 MPH.

If somebody wants to punch it, I get behind them and try to make it where they get a ticket and I don't.

Occasionally, I'll ramp up the speed, but I generally drive a little faster than what the law allows.

Philosophically, I'm a leadfoot. I had a tire blow out on me in Kuwait last year and I was doing 118 at the time, but they don't really enforce speed much over there and you just have to watch out for the few cameras. That was in a Chevy Trailblazer and I've done around and above 100 in various 4 and 6 cylinder vehicles over the years. I had a Chrysler Crossfire for a rental 2 years ago and I got it up to around 134. If I knew they make them to go over 150, I would've gone faster!:D

Get the right car, driving skills and road conditions and faster speeds are safe.Amen to that. I laugh at curves in the road that say 30 when I know I can and do take a boat like the Shaggin' Wagon around the curve at 60 and still stay in my lane. Besides that blowout at 118 MPH, I had one at 75 MPH on US 281 in September. Once again, I was able to safely stop my vehicle without wrecking. The way I look at it, I've proven over the years that I can drive safely at speeds well over what the government allows. I wish they'd up the speed limits.

Here is why I think we still have them. Most adults feel comfortable driving a certain speed. They'd drive that speed even if we could do 100 and not get a ticket. Unfortunately, some people would drive that fast and not be able to handle it and we end up with limits. Me, on the other hand, if you say I can drive 120 and I have a vehicle that can handle that speed, I'll drive 125!

No joke. The State Trooper was as nice as he could be (seein as how I pulled over immediately after seeing him crossing the median). Long story. Have seen him since, he laughs and tells me "You're STILL the fastest guy I ever stopped!"

I'd like to drive on the autobahn. Now that I've gone back to Montana again, the old thrill to have an unlimited speed limit is gone because most of their interstates aren't in good enough shape to want to drive like crazy.

It depends on what city I am in. In the Metroplex I go around 10-15 over, but here in El Paso I would say 5-10 max. The cops are pretty picky around here...

dragons08

Depends where I'm going. I usually drive 15+ on highway, but if I'm on the open road alone, I'll slow down to about 8 over. If there are cars willing to keep up with me, or traffic that is easily maneuverable then I'll go as fast as I please safely.

On streets in cities and stuff, usually about 5-8+ over, a lot more cops and harder to pick out.

When I'm driving I am constantly looking around for cops, plus a radar detector helps too.

To get a German driver's license you have to prove your driving skills, your car knowledge and show that you can do basic preventative maintenance.

If we had those tests over here, we would have a lot fewer drivers on the road.

Let's use the German tests. :notworthy

Every Interstate in America could be The Autobahn. Except for one thing.....STUPID AMERICAN DRIVERS. Have you ever driven (Bundesautobahn) THE Autobahn? In Germany people don't drive and talk on a cell phone, the left lane is for cruising at high speed 80mph+ and Germans use their blinkers. Most interstates have a speed limit of 70mph, however in West Texas this summer I saw an 80mph sign. We could all drive at high speeds safely on the interstate system, just use a "Radar Detector" and watch out for poor drivers. One other note in Arizona and California the use Aerial Speed Traps. ;)

I usually do 10-15 over, depending on where I am. When I am familiar with the area I speed, and usually that works well because I know where the cops do or don't hide. The furthest over the limit I've done was 57, and it would have been more if it wasn't for the limiter/governor stopping me at 107.

Then again I did get stoppe for 79 in a 65 on 1604 and I constantly speed there and had never seen a cop before...didn't see it that time...ha

Generally, I try not to speed but usually on 114 I will speed. The interstates have too many cruisers for me to comfortably speed. When I am on I-20 traveling from Abilene to Midland, I will go 75 or 80. Them semis will go that fast so you better keep up.

Only gone over 100 a few times in my life. I probably won't be doing that ever again...unless it's a major emergency or somethin'.

I-10 is 80 from after kerr county to the El Paso city limits if i'm not mistaken. I was driving on a trip to el paso doing about 95 in the right lane and a state trooper passed me up doing about 120. Didn't seem like he was too worried about speeding out there.

That would be their opinion. It's Political. It's envrionmental. 70 mph is WAAAAY to fast for them, the US wastes too much fuel at that speed. These idiots see that the only way to make their politics heard, is to "protest" in the fast lane.

And then, of course, some think it is to fast to safely travel. Oh, Brother.

Then again, some of them are just oblivious to the fact that someone might be going faster than them.

In my neck of the woods, there is a highly travelled Two lane, with shoulders. Most times, when you come up on a slower moving vehicle, the slower vehicle will use the shoulder, allowing the faster vehicle to pass. The Speed limit is 70.

THAT is the way it should be. Yes, I know it is illegal to use the shoulder in this manner in no passing zones. If you want to go by the letter of the law, though, it is illegal to pass a bicyclist in a no passing zone, even if said cycle weenie is in the shoulder! I guess that is why using the shoulder to pass is tolerated by the Leos. They also see the benefit of using the shoulder.

Finally, as for the 80mph Speed limits. It is a little odd to pass a Law Enforcement person, while you are doing 80 - 85, pullin a trailer!

those people are complete idiots that are just out there to try and get someone killed. While this wasnt on an interstate, over the summer one of my friends got cut off driving his bike doing 70ish by a girl he knew. She apparently saw him coming up and decided he was going too fast so she swerved out in front of him and hit her brakes.

If he hadn't been able to stop in time we would have been scraping him off the concrete that day. Now while he was not innocent (shouldnt have been speeding that much) what in the world makes people think that this is a good way of slowing someone down?

I do that on one lane residential roads, with speed limits of like 30, when I'm doing 37-38 and someone comes roaring up behind me and gets RIGHT ON my bumper, I start doing the speed limit.

I would never do that with my kids in the car but I did do it in high school once to some A-hole that was tailgating me and he ran into the back of me.He got out all pissed off because I was driving my F-150 with a 6in lift on it and it did absolutely nothing to it while the front end of his BMW was messed up.And got a ticket for it and I just smiled while he was yelling and waiting for the police.

I got stopped on 1604 also and have driven there alot without seeing one cop and the time I am in a real hurry I see one and that time I was on the access road before Bulverde rd I was doing 60 in a 45. There was too much traffic on the highway.
