Trinity goes wire to wire #1. We'll see if they finish the playoffs that way.

You forgot to mention Trinity would be the first of anyone's preseason number 1's to win state in 3 years to show what type of odds Trinity is up against :).

I thought it might be interesting to look back at the Preseason Top 25 now that the final poll of the year has been released.
Final Rankings (Preseason Rank in parentheses):
1. Euless Trinity (1)
2. Allen (4)
3. Abilene (9)
4. Arlington Bowie (10)
5. North Shore (8)
6 Pearland (16)
7. FB Hightower (12)
8. Smithson Valley (18)
9. Colleyville Heritage (NR)
10. Round Rock Stony Point (22)
11. Odessa Permian (20)
12. The Woodlands (NR)
13. Plano (2)
14. Wylie (NR)
15. Lewisville Hebron (24)
16. Cedar Hill (23)
17. Lake Highlands (NR)
18. Dallas Skyline (7)
19. Naaman Forest (NR)
20. Southlake Carroll (5)
21. Garland (NR)
22. Klein Oak (NR)
23. Katy Cinco Ranch (NR)
24. SA Reagan (NR)
25. Converse Judson (3)
Preseason ranked teams that finished unranked (Preseason Rank in parentheses):
Spring Westfield (6), Lufkin (11), Eisenhower (13), Katy (14), FM Marcus (15), Pflugerville (17), Cy Ridge (19), Humble (21), Beaumont West Brook (25)
Looking at the above data, several thoughts come to mind...
- Five of our preseason Top 10 finished in the Top 10, with Plano just missing at #13 and Hightower just missing out initially (preseason #12). Overall, I'd think that would stack up pretty well to anyone else who is foolish enough to attempt to rank teams in May.
- 16 of our initial Top 25 are in the Final Top 25...again, that seems pretty decent.
- Of the teams that finished ranked, but were unranked in the preseason, Colleyville Heritage, The Woodlands, Wylie, and Lake Highlands were the biggest misses. Talent-wise, The Woodlands should have been in there to begin with, but it was hard to get past the 3-8 mark in '07. Heritage was tabbed as a playoff team from the beginning, while Wylie and Lake Highlands were monumental whiffs on our part.
- On the other side of the coin are the teams that we ranked to start with that finished unranked. Of the 9 teams that fell into this dubious category, 8 finished with winning records (Marcus was 5-5); all 9 made the playoffs; and one could make a strong case for 5 of them to be ranked right now.
All things considered, it looks like we did a fairly decent job of identifying the upper echelon of teams before the Class of '08 graduated. There's definitely room for improvement and that's one of the main reasons I like to look at stuff like this.
We say it over, and over, and over again, but we do these rankings simply because it's fun to talk about and it's a challenge to try and come up with something that makes some degree of sense. We are well aware of the fact that the rankings don't mean anything once the ball is kicked off, it's just something to help pass the time until that happens.
The next 6 weeks are the ultimate proving grounds and that's why we don't bother with rankings beyond the regular season. We do them in the preseason and during the season to try and stack the teams up leading up to and heading into the playoff season.
As a player, coach, parent, or fan, there's nothing quite like a dramatic playoff run. I encourage everyone to go out and see as many playoff games as they possibly can even if your team's not involved this time around.
I hope you've enjoyed the rankings for what they are and I promise you that we'll continue to work to get better at assessing the state's elite.

You guys do a great job with the rankings every year. Trinity has victories over three of the top 16 which is no easy road, that's for sure.

It's amazing to me to see Katy going into the playoffs unranked. I agree with the admins but I don't think I have ever seen Katy in the playoffs without being ranked. This has been a very unusall year all the way around. Good luck to all the teams as we head into the real season.

Smithson Valley is never flashy, they just win games...lots of them in fact.
That being said, you may very well be right, but we'll never know.

SV loves to be considered "non flashy"-they just win.And I do believe they could compete with Permian.
But KT is right we will never know

Hey Cougmantx,
My dad graduated in 56, me in 81 and my son in 2007. My father tells me that some of Katy's best football came when we were the unknown. Just food for thought. Maybe we will get there this year the good old fashion Katy way,,,,, very quiet.......

I know that these rankings are fun and get people cranked up. I just find it a little odd that you have Copperas Cove ranked #7 in week 8, and after a 4 point lost to a district rival, and then a blow out win in final game, you've dropped them completely out of the top 25.
We'll see, the playoffs will sort it all out.

Since you didn't list Naaman and Garland as your biggest misses of the 9 unranked teams, where would you probably have had them in your pre-season rankings.......30's, 40's, 50's.....thanks...;)
