I would venture to say that it would lose a lot of its authenticity if it were done in English. A big part of the mystique of the haka is the "foreignness" of it. It might also be banned by school officials if it were acurately translated. A lot of talk of death and killing. It is, after all, a war challenge issued by one tribe to another before battle. It is only symbolic nowadays, but with the zero tolerance to violence that most districts adopt, it might spell the death knell to the haka if it were translated.

The school adminstrators OK'ed the Haka from the "get go" last Spring. It has been translated and it does not talk of death and killing. The team started the Haka to unify the many ethnic member team - and the fans love it!!!

Unfortunatley we got the worst of both worlds and accidentally ran out of our helmet tunnel during their alma mater. It was their fault though because they decide to do it after the teams come out of the locker rooms, unlike all other schools we played.
