OK I know this site is dedicated to FOOTBALL but lately I have heard people discussing the run-thru signs for Katy. I would like to point out that the cheerleaders make these signs every week and not once has ANYONE shown them an ounce of appreciation for them but instead they receive constant criticism when they start to tear AND people try to give them their opinionated advice about how to fix it. Now I know these people are just trying to help but they say things like "Why don't you try double-taping?" Well I know for a fact that they use at least 3 layers of tape for every sign and they have always put the same amount of holes in them since who knows when. If the wind picks up a little more it is definitely not their fault. I love those run-thru signs so maybe every once in a while we could give the cheerleaders a little bit of recognition and credit for putting all that extra effort (and time!!) into pumping the FANS up because I can tell you now...those football players can't see what it says.

THANKS KATY CHEERLEADERS!!!!! :D

PS sorry if this sounded in anyway angry or rude but I just wanted to get my point across!

The talk you are referring to was occurring on another board, but your point is a good one. All of the spirit groups do a great job supporting their teams and they deserve a ton of credit for all of their hard work. I can tell you from experience that the players notice and appreciate your efforts.

Don't a lot of teams use the "re-usable" signs now...
I think those suck...no originality in those...
We had one with a big picture of a toilet on it once
when we played John Tyler...hahaha

I think you need to visit the Katy Board. Over there, we do give the cheerleaders kuddos and thanks for a job well done. We love what they do.

However, people sometimes feel the need to be critical of coaches, players, band directors, etc and no body seems to mind. Why should the cheerleaders be any different? Have you never been critical of anyone? Don't overlook the positive coments made just to point out the negative ones.

The run-through signs are great by the way. We look forward to them every week. When the wind rips through them our disappointment is for the girls and the work they put into them.

Yeah, alot of teams use those and I don't like 'em either.

Them blow up helmet/tunnel things are pretty darn cheesy too (especially purple ones) :p.

I love the old school, homemade paper signs.

Yep..some things are better left alone.
And I don't like the smoke and tunnel crap either...
And for God's sake please stop playing that annoying song..
The Rock n' Roll song...whatever it is called...it's cheesy and
unoriginal.

Never really understood the run through sign...

What is the point? By the time the kick off rolls around does anyone even remember what they darn thing said in the first place. And if your argument is "It pumps up the crowd!" If your crowd needs to get pumped up by taping paper together between two tree trunks, so a couple dozen 250lb guys can bust through it like they own the place then maybe you should start playing basketball anyway. I thought Cheerleaders "Pumped Up the Crowd!" by lobbing small hard plastic colored footballs with advertisements slapped all over them into the bleachers to their friends. While I'm on the subject, what is the pre-game gift exchange? What is the purpose of that? Lets walk out on the field and present some trash and junk we don't want to the other schools student body! Just so they will give us their Junk and Trash! How does any of this enhance the experience of the game?

Let’s get past all of this tom-foolery and Just Play Some FOOTBALL!

I thought the cheerleaders pumped up the crowd just by being on the sideline! :D

Do you ever notice how the mascot walks with the students on the gift exchange? I'd like to see them get in a fake fight just once! :D

I like the run-throughs, but don't like how they tear it early. It would be better if they got a running start going through there. Judson used to always use the same design every week and I hoped for something different.

I love the old type of run through signs. We have this big inflatable Eagle tunnel now and that's okay too but when I was in school the cheerleaders and drill team made them and they meant something to us - we had some pretty memorable ones too but the most memorable thing about them, to me anyway, was that it was the highlight of my late dad's week - he would lead the parents down to the Tully tunnel and hold up that darn thing up and then hand us drinks after halftime - he was a drill team daddy if ever there was one - and he taught me everything he knew about football - Miss him like crazy I tell ya.

Oh Texas Bob I first saw them in the late 80s and then again several times in the past few years. They looked a lot like the ones around here...

Paper, paint, tape, tree trunks and some 98lb students doing their darnedest to hold it up in the wind.

The Katy folks have covered this in quite some depth on another board... I think you'll find most everyone appreciates the signs, their message AND the effort that goes into making them... As a fan I look forward to the "Message" as it is unrolled for the masses... Dissappointment when they break early should not be confused with a lack of appreciation for the effort...

As to why, because it's a tradition... Probably the same reason many Katy fans don't care for the blow-up dolls, smoke, velcro signs or thundersticks... New school just ain't for everybody... In my opinion...

Lonny,

My brother played for Victoria Stroman back in the early 90's. Anyway, I remember one game when they played the CC Miller Bucs and the 2 mascots went at it. LOL

The Miller Buc was taunting the Raider guy so the Raider guy went up to the Buc guy and grabbed the head off his Buc costume and started running down the sideline. It was hilarious! The entire Raider crowd was cheering! Finally, the Buc was able to catch up to him and took back his head.

Speaking of gutter, you should see how fast they sell Maxim, FHM, American Curves, and all those magazines around here. When I got here, there was a whole pile of magazines like that in the dayroom that people didn't take with them. It was like 2 years of all the magazines and several copies of each! :D

Heck, I remember when that dang prissy little SMU pony got too close to the Baylor Bear. If Judge hadn't been on a chain, he would have had a big meal of horsemeat and a couple of ATO's on the side. (Followed by Dr Pepper.) True wild kingdom and not just kids in costumes!

Houston used to let Shasta sit on some kind of platform without a cage. She was acting up one day and they thought it was a good idea to put a cougar in a cage from then on! :D

Shasta had a red wagon they carted her around in sometimes. However, when they brought her to Baylor (or maybe BU was at UH), she was in a cage and man, did she get loud when she saw our bear! She made some cool snarls! They had to move her where she couldn't see him. I don't think UH has had a live mascot in years.

Reveille barked her head off at Judge. Clearly, she was telling everyone that there was a bear near her boys! They hid her from him, but when she got out on the field to do her job, she was always looking at the sidelines so she could sound the alarm.

Bevo had absolutely no reaction to the bear. The only thing I ever saw Bevo react to was Earl Campbell rolling into him. Bevo moved!

Bevo is the coolest -just sits there and chews cud and sleeps and looks good! He really doesn't care about that game at all - he just lives the life of Riley. Earl and Bevo - that was a matchup!!

I think you have mis-understood the intentions of the conversations on the other board. We, as fans, love the signs and would really like it if they held together until the guys run through (like they do 99.9% of the time). I realize that it was more windy than usual when they broke; it's not the cheerleaders fault by any means. That is why everyone started posting helpful hints on things that perhaps they would want to try. It has nothing to do with not appreciating them. It's exactly opposite; the appreciation is why the some people were trying to help. Now, if the advise given was offensive, then don't pay attention to it. But please don't get mad because someone offered constructive criticism and was trying to help.

I'm not real sure how else we can show our appreciation for all of the effort the cheerleaders put in other than by applause. Do you have any suggestions?

Cheerleaders are definitely appreciated for all the hard work they do.

Now, on to a mascot story:
Back in the 70s, the Coast Guard Academy also had a live bear cub as mascot - Obji XXIII. Their arch rivals, Norwich, decided to steal the cub one night. So they broke into the cage and threw the cub in the back of a newly converted van.

For you younger ones out there, 70s vans had shag carpeting, big stereo systems, etc.

Well, by the time these idiots got back to Norwich, Obji XXIII had ripped apart the rear of the van. Say goodbye to the stereo, the seats and oh, you don't want to know what was on the carpeting!!!

The Norwich guys called the CG guys to come pick up the bear. And they lost the football game that year!

Sometimes I think of something else to say after I post something and I just make a new post instead of editing and adding to the old post.
