View Full Version : Poll: Which is more compelling? SLC v. Katy or SV?
Given the banter between fans of these schools over the past few days, I was hoping to find out what fans of other teams around the state would prefer to see. I know, I know - other fans want to see their teams playing for the ring. And truly, that may end up being the case. However, if presented with the 2 options come the final week of the playoffs, which game would you rather see and why?
NOTE: In order to accurately gauge the thoughts of fans around the state that are not directly interested in these games, I would prefer it if no SV, Katy or SLC fans voted in this poll. Feel free to chime in on the thread, but lets see what folks from East Texas, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and West Texas think about these 2 potential matchups.

SLC vs Katy - It will be 2 unbeaten teams. I have this thing against teams who have lost a game and still get to the State Championship Games. Also it would give SLC a chance for revenge and for Katy to show that 2003 was not a fluke.

i have to say that slc vs. katy would be more "compelling" a battle of the unbeatens.

why does Katy have to prove 2003 was not a fluke -- they won 0 they already proved their point - scoreboard - trophy case -- end of story. - The only thing it will do it give SLC a chance to even the score or be 0 and 2 against Katy. Fluke my ase.

Katy has had no weakness exposed yet... It is going to be interesting to see how they react if they ever enter the 4th quarter in a dog fight, which this year's team hasn't faced so far... Will the lack of such experience cost them?

Are you suggesting that the UIL switch to a system similar to the BCS?

Katy lost the opener to Lufkin that year and beat SLC in the state game. So we were both 15 and 1 on the season and we won the game by 1 point. That was the greatest football game I ever saw in person. I had more anxiety in that game then when my children were being born. I did not vote on this pole as per your request, but we may actually get to see both games. That would be the way to do it.

2003 was a great game. When Ryan Mouton caught that pass, a friend of mine sitting next to me jumped across the aisle and kissed Mouton's daddy.

Absolutely not. Wining on the football field beats the computer any time. I just feel that am unbeaten champion has more credibility than a champion who has lost a game or two. Only because the team who the champions lost to, could declare themselves 'de facto' champions.

Both stories would be great and are the dream of any local newspaper reporter in the respective metro area. On one hand you have a rematch with the team that took the champions down to the wire and it would be the third meeting of these two teams in a title game in the past four years. On the other hand you have a team that would be 62-1 since they moved up to 5A and they would be facing the team that dealt them that loss two years ago. These matchups will also be important for the next 5 years as at the end of the decade, the newspapers always label a team of the decade. Right now it is kneck and kneck with Carroll and Katy, but if Smithson Valley gets a title they will be able to get into that debate as well.

I think your assuming to much when you assume that SLC is going to be in the state championship. Granted they have an outstanding program, but they still have to play the games like the rest of us. Would it be an upset if Lufkin were fortunate enough to make it that far and beat SLC...yes. I for one, am going to wait until then to talk further about any matchups. I would hope that after five playoff games, whoever makes it to the final two would be an intriguing matchup.
You know what happens when you "assume". :D

ah crap i voted before reading the note sorry...I personally want to see the game played again because 1) chance for revenge 2) i think it would a more exciting game than the other 3) Katy fans are in a class of their own and I enjoy being around them. I think it says a lot that most SLC fans think Katy is a superior team to SV yet would still rather play the Tigers.
PowerPack'd - I am not assuming anything. I just wanted an opinion about these two options. I believe SLC will need to play great football to get back to the title game for a 4th straight season. However, your Pack will need to play a flawless game to beat the Dragons.
Phoenix - no worries. I thought about posting another poll to ask the same thing to Dragon fans, but I pretty much knew the answer already. I would love to see a rematch to see the Dragons play a real "revenge" game and let the Tigers have a chance to repeat the upset.

I agree with all of the other posts that say that Katy Hasn't really had a challenge yet. We're very familiar with our district (Mayde Creek, Cinco Ranch, etc.) so we pretty much know what is going to be brought. All that I can hope is that we don't get too confident and go out on the field and screw up and get raped. Raping is our job. You'll see that by the 20-50 point leads we have as the final scores. I'm really good friends with Aundre, crap man now I can't remember if you spell his name with or without a u, and I have trained with him and this guy realy does have that raw talent. He pushes himself all the way and knows what he wants on the field. Will Thompson is a bad donkey<-- (other word for) for being an all purpose player and RARELY messes up his plays. Logan Madden is a strong and powerful player (TE) so you better watch out. Chris Lewis is strong, so soccer does him well. ANDY DALTON!! What can I say about him.....everything except that he sucks. Anyway, I know all these guys (at least talk to them a lot) and I know that they're serious as heck about these playoffs (who the poo wouldn't) so definately DON'T underestimate them, cause they will show you what's up. Yeah, we MAY have had better teams in the earlier years, and I think this is the best we have had in the last 5 or 6 years, but that was then and this is now. You can say what you want, but Katy will always be the best...reguardless. Southlake/Smithson.. HERE WE COME! Mia :)

I voted before reading. Oh well! My justification for that matchup at this point of the playoffs is that each of these teams has an outstanding offense and defenses that compliment them. It would be a great game even if it weren't the state championship game. The revenge bit is stupid. If the players go into a game with only that on their minds, they are going to make mistakes. They can't get caught up in evening scores. It can bite you.

Well said. I hope we do get a rematch of last year, and I hope we do play flawlessly.
I don't know how long (in years) the Dragons can continue with everyone gunning for them. It is a very impressive run for a talented, well-coached team. You can bet whoever is able to beat SLC will have to have an outstanding defense and a potent offense.

A state title should go to the team that wants it the most and does whatever it takes to get it done, and wins the game. Having said that it shouldn't matter if they are 16-0 or 12-4. The credibility should go to the end result, not the amount of wins and losses that team has. Many decent teams have easy districts, and can emerge 10-0 at the regular seasons end, but does that mean they are state material? Look at clemons...they were unbeaten and bowed out in round one to SA Madison...Why? They Had an easy district. The playoffs weed out the winners and the losers anyway. I guess the prime example is Judson. Their backs were against the wall, but look at them now. They will likely make it to the state semi's. Unbeaten credibility means nothing. Every great team has to lose once to become great.

The Tigers have nothing to prove, they are still wearing those rings that they won, and not by a fluke a missed field goal or anything else. They played with heart the entire game, and came out on top.

I think toonman's point was that if a team who lost earlier in the season wins state it sheds doubt on whether that team really was the "best" in the state. Obviously they were beaten, so who's to say the team that BEAT them wasn't the best. I don't think he was saying they don't "deserve" to win or that they "shouldn't" have won state just that it casts doubt.
For instance in 1998 Southlake beat Grapevine in the regular season and lost to a very good Stephenville team in D2 semis. Grapevine on the other hand went D1 and won state. I personally thought SLC was the better team (compared to Gvine). Had Grapevine been undefeated there would be no question.

Grapevine would have lost to Carroll or Stephenville in the playoffs that year..that was one great game..31-28 Stephneville with a score by Stephenville with a little over a minute to go..Carroll drove the length of the field only to get stopped inside the 20 as time expired..Stephenville went on to pound Bay City...

Dumb Poll to soon and and insult to the other 13 teams in D2.
I got a poll. Who wins state in 2009? I hear SLC has a salty 8th grade green and white team And Katy's 7th grade teams went a combined 49-5. So I think those two teams will match up pretty evenly in 09. However not sure how Special teams will do until the team fully develops through puberty. :D
What a joke!

You are the joke because you could not see that this poll was nothing more than a way to settle a recent argument between Katy and SV fans. You read the question without reading the post to start the thread and you took offense. The fact that you were so easily taken back by the question shows how fragile and defensive you are for Plano's team. Truly, there was no need to slam a poll and relevant question. For these reasons, your post was the joke.
