IMO Cove has a GREAT defensive secondary. They (d-line) put a lot of pressure on the QB. Our o-line (2-sophmores starting, too young mentally for the pressure) could not handle the stunts and LB blitzes. QB had about 3 seconds each play to throw the ball. When the game was tied 7-7 in the 2nd quarter our special teams killed us and the route was on.(40+ kickoff return after we had just tied the game on a lucky turnover and converted into a TD.) They scored a TD(great run by QB on a 3rd down to get it to 5 or 6 yard line and then scored). We got the ball deep in our territory and had to punt after a great defensive stand and our punter punted for 3 yards. Cove had the ball around our 25 yard line and scored a touchdown on 4th down with less than 10 seconds before the half. Halftime score 21 - 7 Cove. This killed us. They knew we would have to pass in the second half and they pinned their ears back and put even more pressure on our QB.
Garland from what i have seen: Don't make stupid mistakes(they will take advantage of every one of them.) I believe you can run on them if you have a very good o-line.(you better pick up the LB'S INSIDE AND OUTSIDE)
BEST OF LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS! SAFE TRAVELS AND SAFE GAME
Whoever loses hold your head high, you are one of the best 24 teams in the state of Texas.

Leanderdad,
Good write-up. Cove's special teams and their secondary beat Consol for the district championship...fiinal score Cove 21 A&M Consol 14. Consol's defense only gave up 7 points (on the first drive of the game) but Cove blocked a punt for a TD and ran an INT back for a TD. Consol drove to the Cove 22 yard line late in the game (less than 30 seconds left), but Cove's secondary came up big again with an interception in the endzone.
Cove can beat you several different ways...running, passing, defense, special teams, and execution.

Serious question here... What kind of offense do you run? I dont think i've read a post about that.

Cove runs a variation of things on offense........if they have success sweeping you...they will do it til they can't do it anymore. Seen them run shotgun some....play action some......option.......haven't seen them this year yet tho...so looking forward to it Friday.

What kind of team would y'all say Cove is? By that I mean what other teams are they similar to? It sounds to me like Cove is similar to John Tyler except that the quarterback and the running back aren't the same person.
Are they like Ennis? South Garland? Lufkin? Southlake Carroll? New England Patriots? I think it's pretty clear that they aren't like Dallas Carter, DeSoto, Garland, or Euless Trinity.
have fun,

Cove is Cove.......you will find out on Friday.........there isn't really a team that rings a bell that they are similar to. They aren't a John Tyler that is for sure.
They are probably more like a Lufkin...........but to me they are more disciplined........smaller...but are trained to get the job done.......and they have the speed of Lufkin. QB is alot smarter......WR's aren't as good as Lufkin...but they don't need to...they are very good with the run.

That helps a lot, and I'm inclined to agree with you about being unique. The only successful, small, fast, run oriented, highly disciplined team I can think of is Bear Bryant's first national championship team at Alabama in 1961.
See y'all Friday.

Seriously speaking, I have been to some SLC games (2) and I come away each time thinking that Cove can compete well with them. Whether we get the chance or not is yet to be seen. I think we compare to them on offense, but we have a better defense. Cove does a lot of different things in each game they play. I think the reason for that is to keep it's next opponents on their heels. It works. They will figure something out and you will have to stop it. They have a lot of weaponry at their disposal. They, like any other team can be beat, but it won't be easy. Go Mighty Dawgs

Have to agree except that their D-line put so much pressure on Drew it was hard to see just how good their secondary might be. They really didn't have to defend long because Drew was running for his life. You could see their speed though in run support. I think if you are gonna try to beat Cove you would have to be able to run the ball up the gut, as they are much too fast to get outside. They read well and are diciplined enough to stay with their assignments, you won't catch them over pursuing. Congrats to Cove on a well played game. I would also like to say how ashamed I am of Leanders fans. Leaving early shows no class. Those kids played their hearts out and after the game were looking for the same support they have enjoyed after games the entire year. One guy near me was even calling for Drew to be benched, it was embarassing. Let's do a little better job of supporting our teams in the future and be careful what you say, you never know whose parents you may be sitting by, and remember these are not pro athletes they are kids.
