I know this is VERY late and long overdue, and I apologize, but I've just finished my 12 step program to recovery from a HS football playoffs loss. :p I honestly don't know why, but the loss by JT to Garland a week ago was the hardest hitting loss to me I've ever had..... and that includes losing in the State Championship game and any losses I had when I played. Maybe it was because this was such a Cinderella season, or maybe it was because we had the game so in hand until the 4th, but whatever it was, it just made it kinda hard to come back onto this forum till now. Anyway, for whatever its worth, I'd like to say now exactly what I wanted to say at the end of that game.....
I've had something against Garland since 1999, although honestly it was only out of loyalty to my cousin of whose South Grand Prairie team you beat in the State Semifinals and ergo ended his senior season. (He, to this day, is bitter to Garland and, more so, the Refs who helped the outcome of the game - now that's according to him, I wasn't there and I don't remember what exactly happened). Anyway, I say all that to say that after seeing ya'll play JT the first game of the season a couple times, then Lee in the playoffs last year, and now again last week, I can say that I hold your school, football program, and fans in utmost esteem. Even during the game, I was struck by how upbeat and optimistic your fans seemed and how well composed your football team was when it seemed that ya'll were being completely dominated and a loss was inevitable. However, your team never lost faith in itself and battled back valiantly to earn a much deserved victory. I can't say this will make me a Garland fan, but your actions, demeanor, and poise demands my greatest respect - that of which Garland will hereby always have. I'm very glad you beat Dallas Carter this weekend, and I do wish you all the best of luck for the rest of the season; and I do hope the resiliency and refusing-to-quit attitude of your team will remain as well.
That being said, I do have a few comments about the game...
I read a few threads so far concerning the game, but I did not come across a mention of what I thought was the turning point of the game. It was near the end of the 3rd quarter with JT at Garland's 3 yard line (I believe) on a 4th down. Instead of keeping the ball on the ground and trying for a touchdown, and thereby pretty much sealing a victory, our coach decides to try a field goal into a VERY strong wind. Considering that JT had NOT made a field goal the entire season AND the fact that JT had already missed an extra point into the wind earlier in the quarter, I just don't see any logic in that play calling. The snap of course went through the holders hands and we turned the ball over on the 25 yard line, and the momentum had shifted. Oh well. It's just a shame though that what I had said all season - that JT's defense gives up runs of 3 yards or less OR 30 yards or more - ended up costing us the game.
ok, I'm glad I finally got all that off my chest. For any John Tyler player that may read this, Thank you very much for the wonderful season you gave me and the rest of your fans this year. I hope you will never forget it, because I surely won't as it was one of the most exciting seasons that I've experienced in 12 years of following (or being a part of) John Tyler football.
To all Garland fans, again I congratulate you and I hope ya'll prove that we were beaten by one of the best teams in the state. I will definitely look forward to our rematch next year.
