Just getting onto this blog. I moved to this area in 2001. I have no kids, grandkids or relation in Southlake. Have missed only two varsity home games since moving into the area and I can count on one hand the number of Thursday night JV or Freshman home games I have missed. I had two sons in Florida, one was a very talented football player the other was average. The son that was an average football player rarely played until his senior year. He enjoyed being part of the team and worked hard to stay on the team. Somewhere in this string of conversation there is mention that seniority should count. Another mentioned that parents paid their way onto a team. Seniority may have a role in some places in life but not on a top performing high school sports team.
What I have noticed about Southlake and other top programs in the country is that teams excel primarily due to professional and disciplined coaching and parents that support their kids development and expect them to do their best. I think Southlake has all of that. Professional coaches at top high schools don't play kids because of money given or donations by parents. If that were the case Southlake with all its money would have parents lined up at the coaches door and it would not be a successful team but dysfunctional chaos. Coaches in Southlake have to be successful and win or they won't be coaching here. They have to put the kids that really want to play, are good teammates and are tops at their positions. The coaching in Southlake is better than I have seen anywhere else. Look at the difference, even at the 9th grade level and JV, Southlake coaches are rarely out coached.
As far as moving up JV and Freshman to the varsity for the playoffs. Those kids that were moved up probably are tough and were in positions needed for scrimmaging. I don't know exactly what their role on the varsity is but it probably is to get their heads knocked around as the 3rd and 4th players on a depth chart. Coaches don't want to bang up their 1st and 2nd team during a playoff run, so those 3rd and 4th teams go up against starters. It is likely a real mismatch and some kids at the freshman and sophomore level are not strong or tough enough.
Lastly, I have seen every freshman and sophomore class come through since 2001. There have been some good ones. The freshman class though this year really stands out in my opinion. They have a very talented QB and receivers that not only have good speed but also have great hands. The skilled positions on offense are as good as I have seen in my time here. The defense is not as strong as some I have seen in years past. They seem a little shaky against the run and on special teams.
Southlake football is great year in and year out. The coaches and the school has got it going on. I only wish my kids grew up in an environment with coaches like these.
It's good to get outside perspective from an unbiased insider. Many of us have been inside for so long, we've become institutionalized.;) Excellent thoughts and presentation.:)

I'm sorry that I don't earn your approval Mr 19 year old. Go flip your burgers. Does your Mommy know you stay up this late and play with your computer? Once again, you are almost on topic.

Welcome aboard 1985Sammy, you make some very good observations and thanks for your support of the Dragon community.
So from your vantage point did the freshman HC improve this year? He was new last year and it was pretty unamimous that he really struggled at times. I thought last year there were several games that we were severly outcoached; specifically the game at Rockwall and at home against Keller. The home game against Haltom was also questionable. It will be nice to hear the problems have been fixed since I have another one working his way up the ranks.
You're spot on about the kids being moved up are position specific. Several outstanding kids on JV Black that didn't get pulled up are in the middle of a log jam of talent at their position already at JV Green and Varsity levels.
The QB is a true gem. He's a great kid and has outstanding parents. You could tell all the way back in 3rd and 4th grade he was going to be special.
Again, welcome aboard :)

Excellent post sir... Welcome aboard the Texas5Afootball train....:)
I agree with this, Coppell drew a team that does Coppell better than Coppell. Our game should be a good one but I believe we'll pull away. Hebron is probably in for the toughest battle. When in doubt about these things I look to the history of the program. Now, people on here will tell you that's silly in hs because the players change every year. That may be true but my systems been fairly good to me and no other level of football has program consistency like the hs level. All that said, I'll take Hebron. There is nothing in Wylie's history to suggest they'll advance. Couple than with a possible overconfidence they'll have, the revenge Hebron is after and the growth the Hawks have shown since starting 0-3 against a brutal schedule.......well you see where I'm going. I like Brazil and Dane is so bright. He needs to come home. 2-1 for 6-5A! We sure got each other ready, huh?
No way sir. AHMO wins!!

If you look around, many other teams have emulated that very system and are in the midst of establishing tradition. Thanks for the format, but we are trying to do it better than you with twist of our own. Arlington Bowie among others..........is in the side view as opposed to the rear view of the past.

I predict Cedar Hill will run the table. Their offensive line was unbelievable. By far and away this was the toughest team we faced all year. Our young defensive lineup was not able to take on an offensive foe like Cedar Hill.
Southlake had a good year. Losing your starting QB mid-season can really throw a team off base. There is a lot of pressure on QB's in the playoffs especially QB's who have never been there before. Overall Southlake was a young team that had some holes.
As far as Wasson is concerned, he has had two good years. Losing your starting QB last year in the playoffs and losing your starter this year is more than most coaches can handle. Southlake....don't start acting like George Steinbrenner did with Joe Torre. SL cannot always win every year nor every other year. We should be better next year on defense with all those returning. A big question next year will be the offense. Who will be the QB?
What kind of receiving corp will we have?

I agree. Our championship teams all had their starting QBs finish the season. Losing KP was a blow that a young team could not recover from. The backup played well in spirts...KP's consistency, decision-making, and leadership was missing. Hal isn't Todd, but Todd never had to deal with adversity like Hal has....well, come to think of it, he's had to deal with adversity the same 2 years as Hal and isn't enjoying it either (fun times at UNT).

I notice a trend every team that has beaten or played SLC close this year is the next great team. Marcus is great, Hebron is really really great, and overall SLC plays in the toughest district in the State >> etc. etc. etc.
Reality is district 6-5A is completely out of the PO's in the 2nd week and Cedar Hill was a missed 29 yard FG and a conversion on 4th and 22 in OT away from being done last week against a 5-5 4th place team.

Hey Chauncey!!!!
Hal wrecked the Porsche!!!!
Very good analogy Green Dragon and let me add to it...
No doubt the 2004-6 teams were 911 Turbo's... At the beginning of the year this team looked like a 911 without the turbocharger. What we saw out there yesterday was a base level Boxster... A Boxster is built in the fine "tradition" of all Porsches, but just doesn't have the same capabilities and that was on display yesterday.
When you loose your starting QB it's awfully tough to recover, especially in the murders row of Region 1 this year.
I've made this comment a couple times before, one of the biggest mistakes made after KP went down was to not give KW a chance. IF we would have been able to consistently throw mid-range passes yesterday it would have made a difference, and that pass is a strength of KW's. I'm not going so far as to say we'd have won, because CHill played incredible yesterday and put a ton of pressure on DP. But, I think we would have been in this game until the final seconds.
Hang in their Dragon players, your community is very proud of you :notworthy

Carroll has always been smaller and slower etc. That never bothered us in the past. No one is questiniong whether Hal is a nice guy or a classy guy. He is just not a great football coach. Does not make him a bad guy.
The reason for the spread is that when run properly dinking and dunking it is a great equalizer.
He had super kids last year in terms of what everyone thought from a talent standpoint and look what happened. We can even deal with that, it is how he reacted that we have a problem with.
As a community we support the kids that is what this is all about and with how hard they work and the expectations they have they need a leader to get them there, not step in their way.

They have huge match up problems with ya'll. They try and run a similar type offense and they really are not good, at least not at the point of the season that we played them.

Both of these. As far as the first one, I was thinking that we pull DP early and give KW a shot, because our output was not there (I have not looked at the numbers yet). No knock on DP, but we really NEEDED the deep to mid range pass, and it was only there once or twice.
I am going to wait a bit before saying more. I am as always very proud of the Dragon community and especially the players, band, drill team, cheerleaders, etc. The sting of a loss is painful, but as long as you put everything out there you can walk away proud, knowing we are proud of you. Here's where people get caught offguard about Arlington, Mansfield and similar teams. Arlington is coached by Eddie Peach's son of Arlington Lamar. That man is one of the best coaches in Texas history.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree except he is more high tech.
This Peach will pass to set up the run. He has an abundance of talent and the QB alone can put it anywhere on the field he wants. The backs are dangerous and elusive. He will have a good game plan and try to make you do what you don't. I suspect Trinity would win it in the trenches....that's their forte. But don't underestimate these guys, they are much better than early in the season when they faced you. They have huge match up problems with ya'll. They try and run a similar type offense and they really are not good, at least not at the point of the season that we played them.

I've got to bite my tongue as well from the perspective of critiquing any of the kids individually. I know there are many of the Dragon posters on here who had boys on the sidelines yesterday. These kids aren't just numbers on the back of a uniform, but boys we've watched grow up. They've raided our refrigerators and pantry's; and brought us a lot of laughter and probably a few minutes or so or frustration over the years :)
At the end of the day I hope their years as Dragon players have prepared them to be solid citizens and more importantly great father's some day.

SLC has a lot to be proud of even in defeat.
You guys had coaching staff in it's second year, good kids with no shining star this past year, and a revamping of what you had due to injury.
Don't tarnish the accomplishments of this year with past success as the barometer.
Tradition and a sound system were the forte you still possess.
It just wasn't your year and there's much more competition than in the past. Many of us have emulated your system.

lack of a true number 1 receiver hurt carroll the whole year, along with little depth at wr.
kyle williamson will be the starter next fall barring injury. mark it down. :)
gonna be a very good team next year. state is not out of the realm of possibility with the group of guys coming back IMO.
You're right, no deep threat. We missed the Renfro's, the Tomlin's, the Jacobson, the Brainard's, etc.

I know this is not on target for this thread but what are you smoking. Neither of the Peach's are more than mediocre coaches. Eddie has just been coaching long enough to get to 300 and his son is no better, he has some notoriety because he is on the radio that is it. Lineweaver is leaps and bounds a better coach with much better football talent.
Eddie has 300 wins and how many state championships?

I'm not one to lay blame on a coach, unless it is for the Cowboys! I do wonder if the staff wasn't coaching to the talent level that they had. In a couple of key positions, the talent level just isn't there to be as aggressive as in seasons past, and that leads to a different type of play list.
Just some thoughts, but I really hate to see so much blame put on the staff when sometimes a team just don't have what it takes in all parts of the game to win a championship. Just ask Coach Dodge at UNT.
I've wondered that as well. However, 3-5 Piland rushing calls when we are down close to the goal, why do the same thing over and over? Then pass when everybody knew we were going to pass? That is the CHILL game resulting in 3 points instead of 7. In the Hebron game, goal line push, same thing. Result? NO score. If we start inside the 20-30, you can bet that 9 times out of 10 it is a rush, Piland or Avers. That is a nice conservative call, but when you are predictable, you get stuffed, unless you are a Trinity. It is playing the safe play, understood. But do you play not to lose, or play to win? Personally, I felt the talent level we have/had was good enough to get us to at least Round 4 (esp after Abilene went out), and possibly to the finals in Division II. Also, I feel we had the talent to play the CHILL game closer than the result.
I have been one to support our staff and give them every chance to be successful. I still support them and believe they are good folks. But IMO this game was lost by the offense, and it was lost because we did not have a game plan that let them succeed. If we are worried about the medium pass, then we are one dimensional. Either put the two backs in (THAT WAS CREATIVE! and well appreciated, AND WORKED!) and go with it, or try a different player to get the pass working. Perhaps KW is not physically ready, I don't know. We were able to move down the field at the end, dinking and dunking. That could be because CHILL was laying off, but it could also be because we had desperation make us take chances.
I know this is all arm-chair QBing. I know there are lots of things we don't know or understand, I am probably missing many things here, so let me know what I am missing. At this time, the season is over, we are in the Loser's Lounge, and it is time to do some evaluating. We have two seasons now, a pretty good Won/Loss record, have had many injuries, and some things to think about.

I agree that the lack of a true #1 WR hurt the Dragons, but Wasson's play calling prevented a true #1 WR emerging - Josh Rake could have been that stand out WR. Conservative play calling, very rarely passing on First Down, no kill the will plays, not going for the TD on second and short, lack of hurry up offense, lack of upping the tempo of the offense - all things which have been hallmarks of Dragon teams have been lacking. Many of the staple passing plays which were more often than not successful in recent seasons were not used. The WRs were not put into situations where they could be successful.
I hate to burst your bubble, but no matter how returning players there are, the Dragons will have a 2009 season just like the 2008; as long as the current coaching staff are in place.

I agree, talent or lack thereof did not lose us that game yesterday.
The 2 back formation caused Chill fits and resulted in a touchdown. And we never tryed it again.
Kyle Williamson should have been given more time in the Heritage game. He also should have been played yesterday when we got down.

I saw that displayed at the Marcus game when Piland came in for Kyle. And it worked very well. We used it at times, but not consistently. In the final drive against CHILL you saw it. It is definitely needed. When CHILL was out of timeouts in the first half, we were a little more speedy as well, that was the perfect time to push the pedal down and open full throttle, they could not adjust.

Trends are interesting... here is something to ponder.
Is the spread offense starting to lose its edge? Early on teams loaded with D1 talent were helpless trying to stop smaller and slower teams running the spread. When coupled with flawless execution it overwhelmed opponents. Now so many teams run the spread and 7 on 7 is played all summer that it makes you wonder if it is losing its edge.
For example, look at the remaining teams in the brutal DII region1. At least 3 of the 4 are strong running teams - maybe all 4. Look at the teams that have led the area in O all season. Abilene, SLC, CHHS, and others are all out of the playoffs.
Maybe the spread is so common place that the pendulum is swinging back to the smash-mouth running teams as they have learned how to defense/contain the spread.
I'm not saying I agree with this but I am just bringing this up for discussion / consideration. We still either led or were right at the top in O staistical categories. I think there is still a place for it, but it needs continual innovation in the form of new formations and plays.

Interesting observation... It seems teams that have more of an option feel are the ones moving onwards in the playoffs. Even if they line up in a spread formation.
The spread also requires a ruthless play caller and someone who is thinking 2 or 3 plays ahead of the DC...

Alrighty... today begins anew... What will the offseason bring for the team and the program as a whole.. I for one am hoping the kids are focusing on the books.. And the coaching staff is studying tape and going over the truckload of notes from the season. You gotta step it up guys. I wonder if they have a play calling clinic they can attend, like the QB clinics, or the kicker clinics.. Could it be that they just need to be coached as well.

I have refrained from commenting on the Dragons loss to Cedar Hill until today. I want to be sure that I am objective in my critique of the game and season. Firstly well done and thank you to all the players for some great memories this season. However 3 losses in one season and now 5 losses in 2 seasons is unacceptable to a program which had only 2 losses in the previous 5 prior seasons. I grade the coaches as an F, as Saturday’s game plan and preparation is probably the worst I have seen in at least 8 years.
Too often this season the players were not put in a position to succeed and this is best exemplified by Wasson’s game plan against Cedar Hill. It seems to me that Wasson’s game plan was to play to not lose rather than a game plan to go out and win the game. The Dragons plays were so un-Carroll like it was untrue. It was just like watching the many many teams that Carroll has beaten over the years, who struggled in vain to match the tempo of the Dragons high octane play – Saturday was most definitely low octane and positively insipid.
Where was the aerial assault on the Cedar Hill defense? Carroll has never gone into a game with the single strategy of running the ball. In the Spread Offense the running game compliments the passing game – it is not the game plan in itself. You cannot win by running the ball with diminutive running backs. Dragon Running Backs are there to keep the defense honest, as part of the spread offense, but when it becomes the entire offense game plan - that is a recipe for disaster. You will be successful if you have a big, strong and fast running back in the mold of Cedar Hill’s Ben Malena - then you game plan around a running back which will succeed; as it did for Cedar Hill.
The Cedar Hill Secondary must have thought Christmas had come early when Carroll just did not throw the ball. I cannot remember when I last saw such an anemic offense performance by the Dragons, which is a direct result of the plays called in by the coaching staff. 93 yards of offense in the first half is not symbolic of a Dragon offense, let alone a spread offense - it is more like a team wanting to grind it out on the ground and use up the clock.
Too many times Wasson plays it safe. There is no “kill the will”. Opponents were often beaten in the first quarter by the very style of the Dragon Offense; throwing the ball, like cruise missiles flying through the air. Wasson’s greatest success is that the Green Uniform and the Helmets with the Dragon Logo on the side; no longer instills fear into opponents. The Dragons no longer have the aura of invincibility and under Wasson’s leadership; all opponents now believe they can win. Every first down play was a run, no going for the killer TD on second and short, No hurry up offense for a change of tempo, etc.
This next season will be Wasson’s third season and many Dragon fans have said that Wasson needs time and Wasson needs to have his own team. Well you got what you wished for; as that Dragon performance on Saturday against Cedar Hill was as far removed from a Todd Dodge Game plan as you could possibly get. Welcome to the failed new world of Southlake Carroll Football.
This is going to be a long off-season and despite the return of many starters - I am not at all optimistic for the 2009 season. I hope I am proved wrong.

Well said Toonman. Saturday was our low...the lack of preperation and failure to make adjustments was unaccepable. The Katy guys sat with us at the game and didn't even recognize the team in Green.
Sometimes a man gets in a job that is too big, or simply not a good fit, for him. At companies like Microsoft or Google, they are displaced quickly. At GM, or the telephone company, they get promoted. With no AD in place, or a new AD coming in with no history here, I worry how this will play out.

I guess having a group of them sitting in the den last night and realizing they're still just kids has mellowed me some today.
How true this is...!!!! It is hard to imagine that these guys are the same athletes who proudly wear the Dragon everywhere who transform to just kids eating me out of house and home watching another football game Sat night(TT vs OU) and playing armchair QB with that game just like we do with their games.

I am proud of our program and what our athletes have accomplished. Realistically, I know it is impossible to win all the time and we have been blessed with the success we have had in the past. The dynamics of this year were very different from seasons of the past (hurricanes and cancelled games and key injuries). Even so we make the playoffs and have some success that over half of the school programs in Texas still dream of having. I wish our seniors well in their future and thank them. I hope they appreciate their successes and learn from their failures to make them better adults in the future. My older son (Soph in college...Dragon from TD's last State team) sits back with a whole new outlook at what they accomplished in perspective of recent teams. He just treasures that moment in the Alamodome when time ran out and they were State Champs for the third time in a row. At the time it was like "OK, just another title for Carroll." Now it is a benchmark in his life. Go ask Justin Padron how he feels now about that!!! Same feeling.

Looking at the game plan.
1. Qb has accuracy issues.
2. WR's can't catch.
3. WR's are not a deep threat.
Looking at those three issues. I would say it would be hard to make a good passing attack game plan.
In the 2nd qtr SLC used a 2 back set and ran all over CH. Then one of the RB's was injured. Which sorta killed that plan.
I don't think the game plan was the reason why the SLC D couldn't stop the run. I think it had to do with they can't tackle! Same problem all year.
Also, wasson does not call the plays 95% of the time. It is his OC who has no imagination.

This is so right on point!!! Hal is a nice guy. Maybe too nice. Maybe he would be better as AD. We need someone to inspire our younger athletes now with confidence and leadership that taps into that Dragon desire to be the best all the time, which comes from "the Tradition" of the past.

Toon, gotta argue this a bit.
Our starting RB carried 12 times against Hebron, 13 against Lewisville, 1 time( injured) against Colleyville and 9 times against Cedar Hill. Nathan carried a bunch in the Colleyville game, but no one seemed concerned afterwards. I'm not sure where this supports your concern raised. That looks like an "honest" use of that position

This caught my eye in the first quarter of the Plano West game. Because of the lack of a deep threat, in fairness to the coaches, it had to alter the game plan.
Face it we've had some very fast WR's the past several year; Renfro, Tomlin, Smitter, Jacobson, Brainard and Cantu. And a lot of these guys were on the same team together which would force the opposing DC to game plan differently against us.

I didn't make my point clear... Due to the lack of a real burner at WR they had to alter the play calling all season. The few really deep balls that KP threw early in the season, our WR's were lucky to be within 3-4 yards of where the ball came down. In the past, Brainard, Tomlin, Jacobson, ect... are there and make the catch.
Nothing against the kids, but it was just reality. Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but I don't see any of the WR's coming up having that kind of speed?

This is true. and the only way to know if it is a lack of focus, skill, etc. or a lack of proper mechanics(which is the coaches responsibilty) is to watch the film and take a closer look.

This is true SLC has had deep threats every year since 2000. But they did not this year.
And since the deep ball was not there this year. And short passes seemed to be dropped way too much. It just was't like past teams.

Wait a second. I am trying to give the HC the benefit of the doubt. He is a leader of young men and I think he genuinely cares for their well being while balancing the pressure and the need for results but this can't tackle, catch and block is a bunch of bull. Injuries brother injuries! Let's see how far Allen goes if their QB is out.
The D finally puts the Chill into a passing situation and we have the corners 10+ yards off the ball and they complete the pass for the first down. We have it first and goal with a 7-0 lead and don't try and put it into the end zone until everyone in TS knows we need to pass. I could go on and on with examples that even a casual observer can see. It is more than the players. You win as a team and lose as a team.

But isn't it the COACH by definition of the word the one responsible for getting the players to do these things. If he sees things wrong he needs to help COACH them to do it right. Same problems, two different years. The fundamentals need to be re-addressed and these coaches need to take the blinders off and realize it. Not practicing these things in practice for whatever various reasons they give (not wanting to get hurt or not enough time) makes an old school player like me go crazy when you don't see them do it on game day. You play like you practice and we have gotten very unfocused in practice to allow the fundamentals slip away. I even heard a PeeWee coach tell me the other day they do not tackle in their practice "because the varsity doesn't do it" Arrrgh! That goes back on the COACHES!

By the time us WR's and DB's go to the water there was so much crude floating in it that you just passed and waited until after practice.

The beauty of the spread is that you do not need burners. Spread the field, get one on one coverage and dink and dunk, that will open the long ball and the running game. I do not care who is running the ball. If you run up the middle each play and get no where and then are 3rd and long and they know you are going to throw, you might as well line up the power I.

Buddy of mine made some interesting points Saturday.
SLC started the game with a dropped pass, and ended the game with a dropped pass. Then looked at me and said 'They have been dropping pass's every game I have seen!'
Another question he ask 'What is the deal with this offensive game plan?'
Run up the middle, QB draw, 5 yrd pass(on 3rd and 10), punt.
Lonestar 48

You might not need burners, although having them does allow the wr's to run past the db and safety to run down the ball, you do need quick receivers. They are running to a spot on the field, the db is running to the same spot, and the qb is passing the ball to the same spot. First one there wins, and our wr's often weren't quick enough to win the race.

Yes. You have the playbook. You have to have the nerve to call the plays, otherwise we can run the Chill or Hebron O (which are effective) and commit to the run first and pass second.
Also, when we were successful with our RB, he didn't get the carries? The QB was getting twice the # of carries. That is a mess.

Your right there were way to many dropped balls. When KP started there were 61 incomplete balls and with Piland there were 81 incomplete balls. Hey Williamson was perfect... zero dropped balls.. He was 4-4.
Also all 3 of our leading recievers were seniors.

I think too many people are trying to make this a black or white thing. From my perspective there were both personnel and direction issues. Without being at practice and in the film room, it's difficult to know for sure how big of a factor each was to the other. I would love to hear a film review session to understand why some of the things that happened ended up happening, but you're blind if you didn't notice that at a few spots the Dragons were either just not quite the elite talent, or not quite as physically mature, as they're used to. The physical maturity thing is something that I think has gone unmentioned for too long, especially as it pertains to poor tackling... both the physical and mental side of being a good tackler. I think some of the kids who struggled this year will end up being very, very good players next year. One thing's for sure - next year the Dragons should be loaded and it's time for them to get back to being deep in the playoffs. Would love to see what Kyle W. can do at QB and I'm anxious to see what the JR and SO classes have to offer at WR. So far most of the stars of that JR class have made their name on the defensive side of the ball instead of the offensive side (save Avers and a few OL). Maybe we can get this back on track towards being a positive thread and some of you Dragons can give us a rundown on the what the future looks like at WR?

Discipline and focus. Both of which has been a strong point in the TD era but not in the HW era. Maybe we need to drop out of the newsprint for a while and go back to basics and find the pain and hunger again.
I feel pain, I'm hungry and not a mention about SL in the Star-Telegram today.

Oak, optimistically, we have some pretty tough and seasoned linemen returning, Carnahan, Weaver, Barone. At wide-out, I see Renger, a flyer named Powell who was injured this year, a under used junior named Gentry who moved here from Aus-Westlake, two current sophs named Moser and Alexander that probably fit in. A 3rd junior QB that moved here will get tested at a different spot, why not at WR?

I have a couple of observations from Saturday's game which is a result of coaching or lack of.
1). Dragon CBs never look back when covering a WR on the long pass - Example the throw to the Cedar Hill WR in the second half. This is the way the CBs are coached to defend.
2). WRs looking up the field before the ball in their hands. You watch ball into your hands then look up field. This is basic skills, which should be perfect in practice and if perfect in practice would be perfect in each and every time in a game.
If the foundations, i.e. basics, are not 100% nailed down, then the whole thing will collapse.

The current sophomore class has some very good receivers; Josh Moser and Dylan Alexander were pulled up last spring to varsity. The JV-Black team(sophomore's) had Daniel Pasche, Mac McGuire, Scott Rollin and Joe Pierce as starters. McGuire and Pasche got pulled up for the playoffs and IMHO Rollin should have as well. Several other kids who didn't start but got worked in were also good players. McGuire is the fastest of any of the sophomores and ran on the 4x400 relay team at regionals as a freshman.
Add to this mix of Paul Stevenson and Randy Williams at RB and the class has some good talent at the skill positions.

If a CB is beat, they never look back at the ball, they play the eyes of the receiver.
As hard as the guys were getting hit, they were probably looking to see which truck was coming. That happens in every game.
Y'all make it sound like at practice the HC and staff do nothing at all regarding football...just leave it up to the players to decide. If the players were actually coaching themselves in practice, then I think they had a fantastic year!

How good are Hoagland's hands? Seems he could be DB or WR.

Walker and Rake were both very good recievers.
One of them is.

I thought about that to, but then what do you do at DB.. Similar to Josh Rake moving, we sure could have used him at DB a few times this season.

I posted this last month. Can't really think of anything to add, but worth repeating:

Ok here is the way I see it and again I am waiting to make my "State of the Program" address for my 1000th post. When you run the spread you are forcing one on one coverage except for the deep passes. Where were the picks that we used to run, not a TD invention mind you, the quick out? the quick pass to the guy in the slot who is almost always given 15-20 yards, even if the db is quick you get 5-7 yards. They start cheating up and the mid range slant is open behind them. That opens up the running game because your LB's have to cover in case the receiver makes a move and gets by so they are not crashing the line.
This is basic stuff.
Remember in pre game warm ups the receivers and RB's used to catch passes and watch the ball into their hands until it was tucked. That does not happen any more. These are drills. What the hell they do at practice I can only imagine.
Does the team look inspired, even in the games we won? Nope.
Do you think they walk on the field and think" we are Carroll how much are we going to beat this team by?" as opposed to hoping we can win.
We do not tackle in practice and the last two years we are plagued by game related injuries, why would that be, their bodies are not game hitting ready.
F. it give me the headset!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, I am not a coach, that much I can promise you. I played a lot in my youth but this game has changed but I can tell you that even in college we were taught that if you block and tackle better than the other team you are going to win a lot.
Mansfield beat Abilene. How much you want to bet if we watched the game film they played over their heads with a lot of emotion and did the basics better than Abilene, sound similar to a couple of our losses????????????????
That my friends is coaching and leadership.
Damn probably blew my big 1,000 :D

I've watched him since 7th grade and he has very good hands. As witnessed by picks at Hebron and against Colleyville. I'd be surprised if they don't at least give him a look at WR this coming season.
An intangible Shawn has is he's fearless and loves contact.

Both current junior and sophomore classes have some good DB's in the pipeline.
I posted on here before that last year during freshman ball Shawn started at DB and was worked in at WR every 3rd series I believe. His touch the ball to touchdown ratio was outrageous :D

oops... Sorry about that you are correct. It was Cameron Stone I was thinking of.
