Confused at best. Allen says they are home. Our booster club and the coaches say we are home. Dragons wear white, sit on South side (home) Allen wears blue and sits on North side. Who's actually home? Dunno...:p
I spoke to our Band director this evening. We are the Visitors, but we are sitting on the Home side. Since we sat on the home side last Saturday they're putting us there again because we already know the way in and it makes things easier for us and the event staff as well.

The Dragons looked good in last week's win over Heritage. Here's the photo gallery we brought back from Cowboys Stadium.

yep, might cover beer money for 'pants. But then again, it might not. :)
That is a pretty big budget and the economy is not helping so if ya'll feel a fundraiser is in order to help with my consumption it would be much appreciated. I will let you know that on game days I only drink beer that is in green bottles(for real).
Of course you could just drop off a few cases of Rolling Rock. :D

Here is a good article. We are Rivals national game of the week. Of course Allen is favored. I kinda like the underdog role.

Yea DF316, the genius's at the DMN ALL picked Allen to win. A negative would be to think 'oh were toast', or realistically almost everytime they all pick someone in a close game, that team loses:)

Did anyone else notice the picture of Kyle Padron in this weeks SI? There is a short note titled "SMU Magic" with a picture of KP at the bottom. I noticed it last night... I think the last 4 Dragon QB's (CD/GM/RD/KP) have made it into SI!

I know I just saw the DMN weekend picks. They all picked Allen to win. Almost everyone has. That will give Southlake a little bit of motivation.:D Not like they need it though.

I can't believe anyone would be shocked by this. I think everyone outside of Southlake(with the exception of a FEW few folks) doesn't think we have a prayer. I hope the boys know that, and it gets them sky high for this one.
They will need every bit of emotion they can muster. Allen's no joke. This isn't the Allen teams that we've destroyed in the past.

One other thing, my daughter just came in from the pep rally. Very much appreciated the props given to the band by Cade, and in particular, Hal's words of support and the playing of the tape of LIDS. As I have said before, one of the great thing's about Southlake is how our community gets out and supports each other. Hal and the team just gave some back.

My Band kid came home and the first thing he told me about was that pep rally - the recognition meant a lot to him, too.
We only have half the numbers Allen's band does, but I have a feeling our kids are going to put twice as much into this game!

Dragon Nation,
Just wanted to thank y'all for the
opportunity to be in the game with ya's.
Of course I want our team to win, but
this time around it is so much more than that.
To me it is really about the event itself rather
than the outcome.
Allen is beatable by a good team. Y'all have
a "good team". It should be a zinger of
a spectacle. I hope it lives up to the hype.
Best of luck to y'all. May your boys play to the
best of their ability.(Kind of !);)

Thanks AD. You are a good fan sir. Our Dragons will do their best to keep this season going. It will be wonderful to have the Allen Nation supporting us. You all have a great team over there and I feel for your young men, especially those Sr's. Good luck next season.
Guys, I am going to say this and then go to bed. I am still so amped up (and I was only able to listen to the game on the radio while looking at the ticket I had bought) from the excitement.
Calls are made here and there that we dont and wont always agree with.
Could we have called a time out and settled the punt team down? Sure and that might have been best, but we didn't. What if we did and the same thing happened with the short punt? We did win though.
Could we have taken the safety and put 2 points on the board for Allen and kick it to them? Sure and that might have been best, but we didn't. What if we had done that and Allen then only needed 6 to win instead of the 7 to tie and what if Allen had gotten those 6 points? We did win though.
What if we didn't get the false start call after we held Allen on the 4th down try to tie before that crazy 1 second game tying TD? Certainly it's easier to get and likely we do get the 1st down and the game is over. We did win though.
What if Cade gets that field goal, instead of missing it? We did win though.
What if the officials didn't put 1 second on the clock at the end at all? We did win though.
What if the Carroll defenders knock the ball down on the final play of regulation? We did win though.
See, we can all play the what if game and it's easy to do so...but we won the game. A call here or there is easy to do...Talk to me when the staff doesn't have their team prepared to play a game...but the game was won by the staff and the players collectively....We did win guys and gals, we did win and we have a game next week. Lets not just throw the head coach under the bus because it didn't occur exactly the way you think it should have, because we all know that if it had been done your way and it failed to result in a win, then the head coach would be questioned for that too. Either way he's a bum and cost his team..right?
We did win though.
I'm proud of the Dragons tonight (this morning) and that includes EVERY player and EVERY coach and EVERY trainer..EVERY member of this Dragon team for a tough hard fought win against a great Allen Eagle program. I'm very proud of them.

What great intestinal fortitude it took for those boys, who thought they had it won, to have it pulled from underneath them, to go out and fire up a second and third time to win this game. The emotional rollercoaster they were on was unbelievable, but to band together like brothers and fight the Dragon fight was amazing. Congratulations Dragons on winning the game TWICE!

I think you should get the game ball, no kidding your face was worth a million words on a few occassions, I could feel your pain but if there was ever a 12th man yesterday it was you. Get rested up for next week, we need you again and hopefully that one will be much less exciting, in a good way.

What an experience. To look around and see what had to have been at least 45-50,000 people in the world's most over-the-top stadium; to watch kids we've watched grow up since 2nd grade Pee Wee display unbelievable guts, skill, and resilience; and to come out with a win under such dramatic conditions against a school with twice our enrollment. Wowza. So many great plays and players on this team last night....#10, 3, 43, 21, 36, 77, 25, 18, 8, 9, 73, etc. etc for 10 more jersey numbers....we are blessed, folks, every one of us who care about and participate in Dragon football. I had a college friend from the midwest with me at the game...his first Texas high school game...he was speechless....when he wasn't saying over and over from the time we arrived at 7:00pm, "This is unbelievable."

This is brilliant thought. Both teams played great. I don't think there was one turnover by either team. Players don't win games at this level despite their coaching. And coaches don't win without the players executing.

I want to come on here and say what a great game we witnessed last night. I had said in a post earlier if the game had to come down to heart and desire it would take 10 o.t.'s to determine a winner. I was kinda close. I filmed almost every play and will go back and watch the replays closer to break it down better. But what I saw with the naked eye is Tommy Avers should be the Mayor of Southlake and Mitchell Osbourne should be city manager. People can argue who is the fastest LB in the state, but with pads on and chasing down a receiver or one of the bestQB's in the state I will take him. Also would like for some one to tell me what scripture is on his eye black. I saw it was Ephesians but cant make out the other. I know it is the same as Tim Tebow's. Well Carroll has my support the rest of the way, GO DFW!!!!!!

Does anybody have any information on ticket sales since school is out this week?
Found the answer on the Carroll website.....
Next up: The Dragons advance to meet Arlington Bowie (10-2) in a Region I semifinal Friday at 7:30 p.m. at SMU's Ford Stadium. Tickets will be on sale Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. - noon at Dragon Stadium.
It is Monday.....and things are finally calming down. Saturday's emotions carried through the entire day Sunday at our house, as I would expect the same at many others.
It hit me this morning, from experience, that those young men from Allen are really hurting today. And just like our boys: they are great kids, their unit had the same goals, and they grew together as teammates and brothers over the course of the season.
My hats off to the Allen Eagle football team today. You have earned the utmost respect from this Dragon supporter. We will not ever forget the passion and talent that your team displayed in this football game.

It is great to be a Carroll Dragon fan. Even greater to be the dad of one of these great players. I wanted him to play because I thought it would be an experience he would never forget. He never played organized football until his sophmore year. He didn't even know how many yards it took to get a first down. Well not only is it an experience he will never forget but one I will not either. He has learned so much from the team and coaches. He is part of something that really can't be described. From sweating through weights and gassers, learning his trade and bonding with some of the greatest kids in the world he has learned, focus, perciverence, leadership and how incredible leaders can be 17 & 18 years old.
My boy doesn't start but he has been brought into the fraternity. Guys like 73, 61, 79,57,76,72 and 60. Of course their are many more. From eating (this is what they do second only to football) at Babe's, Lazy Bones, peoples houses for dinner and #9's house for breakfast and of course Wendy's in that old coutch and all the pick ups. These guys are a family. My boy now has two families who care about him and he about them. It is hard to describe but I know it is once in a lifetime special.
These seniors want top honors and who knows, they may get it. If not they still have had a year they will never forget. At the risk of sounding corny I will say that just as Dragons are mystical so is this team and our fans. The last 12 years have been one I will never forget and I expect to add to those for many years to come.

Who would you like to see SLC play Abilene or Cedar Hill? I would like Carroll to play Abilene and get revenge from that game in 2007. I also would like us to play Cedar Hill. Not really sure about who I would like to see play us but we have to get past Bowie first.

Guys - just wanted to throw out a quick congrats your way. Saturday night was probaby the best game and atmosphere for a high school game I've ever experienced, and I've been to my share of games (and it includes Trinity-SLC 2006, which is a close second). It was just an awesome display. I always want to beat you guys, but I have the upmost respect for the way you do things. After the first quarter, everyone around me thought Allen looked better, and I just kept saying "Southlake is Southlake, and these kids NEVER think they will lose". I wasn't kidding, and its what I think makes you special. You may be out-talented on occasion, but your guys completely buy in to the fact that they don't lose, and its awesome to watch over the years. I also commented on how a lot of your kids instead of celebrating were helping the Allen players up and hugging them. I thought it was a great display (and I remember thinking the same thing after the Trinity game when your kids stayed around to watch and then appluad the Haka after the game). Lots of people bash the fanbase, etc (including me on occasion), but I told the people around me to look down there at those kids, because on the field, they are always all class, and you saw it again on Saturday.
Anyway, it made me hope one day our program can be on that level (though we have a LONG way to go). But I hope you guys are extremely proud of your players and coaches after that thing, because they stayed together and rebounded from one of the biggest stomach punches I've ever seen in a game. Good luck to you guys the rest of the way! I think you're going to have your hands full with Cedar Hill after seeing them for a second time, but I think you guys are going to be repping DFW in the state title game. Best of luck and good health to y'all the rest of the way!

Yes thank you for the post. That is one big reason I like the Dragons. I just looked at the Skyline vs Desoto thread and heard that one of the teams coaches were making rude comments toward players. Not sure on the whole story but cant believe that happens. I was on the sideline for the first half of the Allen game and went back in the stands for the 2nd half. I wanted to go back on that field and tell some of the Allen football players to keep there head up cuz they played a great game.

I agree with the statement about the kids. I have commented several times about how #21 Avers has helped the other teams players up after a play. I also remember the mutual respect between the players from Trinity and SLC at that game.
I also agree that out fanbase often rubs people the wrong way and cause people to not like SLC. Reminds me of how I used to hate the Cowboys because of their fan base. I always respected the team but the fans were too full of themselves.

I know Myself and the Dragons football team is not looking past Bowie. The got a good team but the Dragons Offense and Defense will be ready.
Who would you like to see SLC play Abilene or Cedar Hill? I would like Carroll to play Abilene and get revenge from that game in 2007. I also would like us to play Cedar Hill. Not really sure about who I would like to see play us but we have to get past Bowie first.
I was about to start this same thread. We will all agree that we will have our hands full with Bowie. I am a big fan of what Coach Perry has been able to do at each of his stops and the Bowie game will be tough.
IF we are able to make it past Bowie then who would we like to play? Forget the matchups and the possible travel if we play Abilene. Who would we want to play to try and avenge our last couple of playoff losses. I would think most would want to play Cedar Hill since that is the most recent loss. There are more kids that were involved in that loss. Either way, it will be a fun game to try to avenge a loss. Just my thoughts.
Not a shocker on this to me at all...

Thank you for your kind words and observations. My youngest child plays on the team this year and is a Senior. I have experienced first hand how the school and community produce young adults ready to go out in the world and lead. I have also seen this with students all over the state. I am proud to be a Dragon parent 2x and am very fortunate to part of this thing called Texas High School Football. Damn now I am starting to tear up. Can I use the old man thing too. I am 50.

GO DRAGONS!!
Heart felt and great perspective. As the Dad of one of those numbers you listed, it makes me proud to hear how they behave toward your son when no coach or parent is looking....the true definition of character. Let's keep it going!!

Also what was crazy about saturday night was the Oregon vs. Arizona game.

Arizona logo is the same logo as Allen's logo.
The funny thing was Oregan beat Arizona in 2 OT's Saturday night just like the Southlake vs. Allen game.

Going through and reading all these posts from senior parents is truly a great thing. Senior year was one of my best years of my life, yes the football team wasn't the greatest compared to my previous 3 years (all state championships), but it was something I'll never forget. Let your kids know how proud of them you are and how much you care about them. It is something they'll never forget.
Heading into graduation when all my family came down from Illinois to be at my graduation meant a lot to me. Them telling me how proud of me they are and how much they love me truly made me feel good. Now my sister gets to experience that, and I know she's excited for it.
This group of seniors has determination and you can see it in the way they play. Even though i've been 2 years removed from HS now, I still am proud to tell people I'm from Southlake. I get crap from people for it, but a lot of the times it'll end up in them changing their opinion on Southlake people, as many of them never met "us".
Stay classy Dragon Nation, and keep doing the right thing in public and pass that on to your kids. As long as you keep doing the right thing in life and give respect to people you will go far in changing the perception of our community.

I know his "fresh" year he gray shirted and went to CC, this year I'm not sure where he's been.
I can find no stats, or anything that talks about him being on the team this year. There was stuff about them looking excited about him in the spring game and expecting big things.
Anyone know what happened?

Yes. Blake is on the Oregon team and suits up for every game, though he has not played. He is the only redshirt freshmen that suits out in full pads and gear. Oregon has 6 WR's and pretty much have a 5 man rotation, so he is on the bubble of playing time, shold anything happen to one of the other guys. A few of us were talking in here a few weeks back about Blake and the question arose about him redshirting and still having a clean 4 years left to play and I said that option was open because he hadn't played.
Well, Gwen PM'd me a few days later and said they were infact hoping at this late point of the season, that Blake wouldn't be called in to action. Their hope is he will still have his 4 years starting next season, as he should see plenty of playing time.
I really do appreciate Gwen PM'n me and telling me that, it's always great to hear from her about Blake, since he is so far away from us.

The only reason I can think of is that with the high snap, the punter had to jump for the ball and when he came down with it (whew) had to take a number of steps prior to kicking it. Those steps would remove his protection. Otherwise, it would be at least a running into the kicker penalty.

The official was asked directly about this. His response was an after thought. He thought the punt was touched. He blew the call basically. He was on a bad run I guess. Setting the clock after plays began for both sides, putting a second back on the clock, etc. These guys don't get paid well and there was a lot of pressure on everyone Saturday. But that is what happens. The team that wins despite all this looks everybit a champion.

Alright guys/gals, as you know from my name I enjoy Golf. It is now silly season on the PGA tour and one of those is the PGA Skins Game. It's important that you win a skin, but you do not get the skin (cash) until you validate the skin by winning the next hole. You guys have a great team, you beat Allen in a great game, now you gotta validate it by puttin the beat down on Arlington. Git-r-done!!:notworthy

The only reason I can think of is that with the high snap, the punter had to jump for the ball and when he came down with it (whew) had to take a number of steps prior to kicking it. Those steps would remove his protection. Otherwise, it would be at least a running into the kicker penalty.
i was yelling for roughing at the time, as the punter was battered. Others said it was partially blocked, but I didn't see that. I think the refs were over their collective heads at that point. They couldn't even get teh whistles correct.

quick thought. what a weapon brett renger is to our offense, huh? guy seemingly catches everything thrown his way and he's a physical slot receiver which is a nice duo with the shifty landers. it's too bad he's been battling injuries this year, but there's not a better time to have him healthy/healthier than the playoffs.
I think we have had better slot recievers than Renger or Landers (a.k.a. Cantu and Jacobsen), but I can't think of a better pair that we have ever had. On a scale of 1-10 with McKay and Blake being 10's, these guys are an 8 and a 9, that take turns being the 9. When it comes to heart, they are a pair of Aces.:notworthy:notworthy:notworthy

Sean Landers is the type of kid that is the cornerstone of successful Dragon teams past and present. Solid performers with the incredible attitudes, not heavily recruited, that motivate those around them and push the rest of the team to be better. A great inspiration and unselfish young man. His parents did something right with him.
I sadly will have to miss the game on Friday as I have to be out of town. However the couple playoffs game that I have missed since 2005 have all been blow out wins by the Dragons so hopefully that will continue. I attempted to change my plans but my family was less than receptive. I will be there in spirit.

I've had the honor of knowing his parents for going on 11 years and think the world of them. It's very special to see Sean get his chance as a senior and then to excel! Another one on the list is Clay McMillian. Clay hung in there and hung in there and got finally his chance and is now excelling as well...
It's no surprise the character and heart this class shows. You can go down the list of these kids and one of the major reason's each of them is successful now, and will be in the future, is their parents. Agnew, Hathaway, Williamson, Avers, Osborne, McMillian, Simoson and many more have parents who have always been there for them :)

This game just shows that you have to catch lightening in a bottle to win a state title!
I think SLC can do it this year!
Agree with this 100%. There is rarely a state champion that doesn't catch a lucky bounce/break/win a crazy game somewhere along the road. To win state in Texas (6 games in a row against good to great teams), at some point the football gods have to look your way. That fact to me is still what makes the 4 out of 5 impressive. Luck (at least the way the ball bounces) flat out has a factor in the playoffs at some point, but y'all continue to play through it and be on the "good" end of those bounces.

This!! I have it on very good authority that when asked why he didn't call roughing the referee was taken by suprise. He studdered and then said I THOUGHT it (the ball) was touched. Wrong!

Same to you and your family Doc. I wont be at the game tomorrow night (family in town) but as always, I will be there in spirit and will be listening and cheering.
I wish this was a Saturday game, because the family leaves Saturday morning. Since that's the case, I will be going to see my school play Saturday at Hanby.
If anyone wants to come watch the Yellowjackets play Saturday at 2pm against Marshall, then come on out. They'll appreciate the support.

Well, ladies and gents, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving Day and I wish you all the blessings of our Lord going forward.
... now to football, I just finished watching the Allen/SLC game on FOX. well, it was the abbreviated version I guess, but it'll have to do. IT was cool seeing how the game happened becasue I had only listened to it live on KKGM.
I know the whole thing was discussed in the other thread, but I gotta say this anyway. A lot of discussion could have been avoided if the Dragon player simply did not touch the punted ball. I could see no Allen players near enough to threaten picking it up for a return so, IMO, he should have let it roll around until the ball came to a stand still and game over. simple as that. Instead, the Dragon player catches the ball on a bounce to down it and apparently the ref says there was a tick left on the clock. I also have to mention that the punt was shanked. Fortunately, the punter got it out of the endzone far enough and away from the Allen players.
It's funny to me , I don't know what all the big fuss was about. Regardless, I still enjoyed the heck out of that game with the way it finally played out.
Good luck in your next game. Take care! :)

There was a lot of discussion about coaching awareness, etc, etc. After further review of the tapes. Hal was trying to get a timeout but the center snaped the ball, the punter made a great effort to get the ball out of there and the ball took a bounce toward the Carroll endzone so a Carroll player caught it to down it with 1 sec to play. It was not so much a coaching error as it was a refs error and a great play by the punter and a reactive play by the player who downed the ball.
All questioning of the coaching should now review their thoughts. Does not do the team any good to be questioning how the team got a very good win!

Think about it, we don't punt that much during the regular season. However, come the playoffs we do... One of the key elements that kept the 2004 state championship game close was a blocked punt by Smithson Valley...
I'm sure there was focus put on this aspect of the game during this week of practice. Time to drill the special team guys to the various situations they might encounter and how to react during the game. Especially if we can't get a timeout called.

There was pleanty of time to call the time-out. The Punt Team should not have had to hurry on to the field. The last play of regulation time could have been managed a whole lot better and avoided the need for OT.

It was not so much a coaching error as it was a refs error and a great play by the punter and a reactive play by the player who downed the ball.

I never questioned the coach's calls. I would never be so bold. I was just commenting that the game would have been over had the player not touched the punted ball. I will add that if I were in that kids shoes I'm sure I would have done the exact same thing 99 out of 100 times and downed the ball. you see, I had only listened to the game on radio. It was cool to see it on the TV and then realize what all of you were ready to kill each other over. :)

From my listening to the game and reviewing what I heard with my eyes, I'd say that last sequence of events came down to bad luck. Hal tried to get the timeout, the punter bobled the ball just long enough to allow Allens players to get a rush, the fact that some of te Carroll blockers were in belief that a timeout was coming and didn't block full out, the touching of the ball after the punt, the fact that it's obvious there should have been a penalty called on Allen for roughing the punter or at the very least running into him..etc. Just an odd sequence of events that went in Allens favor. Any call from a coach can be questioned after the fact, but it's apparent there was zero bad coaching involved in that, as a great many came on and suggested afterwards.

Correct. The Dragon player should not have touched the ball, and putting a second back on the clocl was the correct call. However, the big miss was the NO CALL when they roughed our punter. It was shanked, because he was getting hammered in the body. The ball was not even close to being touched. That was a big miss by the refs that were clearly over their heads in this game. All's well that ends well however.

On the east side of the stadium at Dublin St. there are parking spots right off the road with open grass areas in front of the cars, thats where we have tailgated before. Also between Dublin and Airline Rd. right off Airline to the south, there is a small parking area, alot of people tailgate there as well.

Maybe it's as simple as this. This team wasn't as good as we thought when they were 9th graders? It's not POSSIBLE to predict a team's ceiling 3 years in advance... You can't predict injuries. You can't predict kids leaving the program. You can't predict how great someone will play against you. Sounds to me as if Bowie was flat better...

Bowie is a very talented and well coached group. They came to play and executed almost flawlessly. It would have been nice to see an attempt at a defensive adjustment to counter what they were doing....like 3-4, or penetration (containment) by the ends instead of read. We just seemed to be doing the same thing over and over....expecting a different result.

Bye Hal.
If he is gone it will be his decision. There is nothing to be ashamed of about this team, its efforts, the season results, the players or the coaches. There may be changes in our coaching staff as some coaches decide to take positions for better pay or to deal with more realistic parent expectations. If they do leave then good luck to them and thanks for their great efforts here. It isn't all about winning state. These kids can hold their head up high and hold onto their lifelong teammate friends.
As far as DodgeBall.....I know Todd real well. I am sure he would love to have you show up for a N.Texas game to watch DodgeBall today. He is a great coach, infallible no.

Oh, sure... I agree... I hope nobody thought I meant any sort of negativity towards the team. That includes the coaches AND PLAYERS. Many reasons for last night. I'll say it again, though, last night to me was an exclamation point on the theory that the problem here in Southlake isn't the coaching staff at this point.
As a previous poster said, if you think Todd Dodge is perfect, you don't want UNT football... I love Dodge, but I seriously doubt we're still looking @ just 1 loss and now 7 out of 8 5A titles... Get real. :(

Some musings from a senior Dad who has gotten to know these kids, their parents and the coaching staff:
--Most people who have any perspective at all--i.e.,people who have lived in other places--know how special this Texas HS football and Dragon experience is, win or lose. From the facilities, to the crowds, to the parental/community/Dragon Council support, to the Dragon "Character Curriculum", it's unique and special, and prepares our kids with life lessons. When we moved here 10 years ago, I thought it was all a little silly. Not so much now.
--If your kid plays on any of the Carroll football teams--A or B, attack or starter--he is a true Dragon. Every boy who's out there in 105 degree heat and straps on pads is a hero and is better for the experience. If you have a kid coming up in the program, support him no matter what, and trust that the coaches know what they're doing. My son bounced back and forth on the "A" and "B" teams, starting and not. This final year he started and has earned 5 Division 1 scholarship offers. Never underestimate the skill of the Carroll coaches, you Coach bashers out there. Nor the power of a good kid with a goal. We're proud of you, Mason.

It was a season full of great memories for us fans...Avers KO return for a TD against PW; holding Arlington's potent offense scoreless thru 3 quarters; winning big in the monsoon against Bellaire; KW shows that we indeed have two 1st string QBs putting up over 50 on Mesquite; seeing a top notch Houston team with a bunch of incredible NS atheletes on display; overcoming an uncharacteristic offensive glitch of 2 TOs and a 9 yard 1st qtr. with some great D against Coppell; after several closes misses, Piland finally hitting the big bomb to Gentry on the 1st play from scrimmage and Cade getting the PAT record at FM; a great goal line stand against FMM and Hopkins as Piland stays red hot for a 2nd game; a great late 4th quarter drive the length of the field to stop Hebron's comeback effort; a shutout of Lewisville; 5 picks against Colleyville Heritage; and a game for the ages against Allen.
Thanks to all the players, coaches etc., who worked so hard to put another fine product on the field this year. Best wishes to all the seniors in their future endeavors. Looking forward to seeing many of those who will play at the next level.

Very classy post :notworthy
Good luck to Mason as he continues his career at Colorado State!

Bowie got it done. Talk about warriors, playing hurt and all. Your deception on offense was incredible. I don't know exactly what you were doing on defense to throw us off but it worked.
I would always rather lose to a team who is working towards establishing themselves as a strong program like Bowie as opposed to an Allen for an example. I hope it is your year. Best of luck the rest of the way. We will be pulling for you.

What I will miss most is, and has most definitely been one of the highlights of this season's Dragon play, is the running of Tommy Avers - nothing gave me greater pleasure than to see TA set off on one of his mazy runs; along with one of the best side steps and jinks by any Dragon Running back I have ever seen. I wish this young man all the very best for the remainder of his Senior Year and for wherever his college happens to be.

without a doubt. he and riley were probably the two most exciting players i've seen come through carroll. just a joy to watch. at the game last night, a couple of my friends, who hadn't seen a carroll game this year yet, were amazed at his speed and juking ability. he will be missed, that's for sure.

Sorry about your loss SLC. It was alot of fun playing this year and meeting all of you. We appreciate all the positive comments you made on our thread after our crazy losses, esp. to those Beaumont teams and then our loss that knocked us out of the playoffs.....well once again we have next year! Good Luck to your boys, esp. your seniors.

IMO: The best SLC team and the best Katy team played each other in the 2005 state game. What a game.
IMAGINE: A TCU vs. Bama BCS game...a rematch of QB's
Questions:
1. Which SLC team is regarded as their finest?
2. I remember SLC having 4 WR's that had D1 scholarships. What happened to them? Any still playing?
3. I know what happened to the QB and RB from SLC '05 team. What about some of the others?
Mitch Enright and Pete Fleps are both starting for SMU. Saw that game yesterday and there is no doubt KP was just what June Jones needed!

Just saying I generally always pull for an underdog team in any sport. Bowie while not a huge underdog by any means doesn't have the reputation like an Allen. I like stories of teams turning programs around, coming off a bad year, cinderella stories, etc. When Allen or SLC or other successful programs win, it is just expected. I would pull big time for Lewisville for example as long as it was not in a game against SLC.

From what I've seen, either the 2004 or 2005 teams. Others might suggest the 1993 team

McKay Jacobson with BYU, Corbin Smitter with Rice, Clint Renfro track for TCU and a blank on the 4th

Michael Prince -OL with Mizzou, Justin Drescher - deep snapper for Colorado

So happy for the Kyle Padron and family. While Carroll missed Kyle last year perhaps his fate.... was to drop a little in the recruiting race last year to a bigger time football program.... in order to have a chance to start as a freshman and help re-establish a football program that is long overdue. The success SMU is having and now going to the Aloha Bowl should help recruiting for next year. Perhaps a few more SLC kids might want to drop off some recruiting tapes at June's office? An Agnew, a Schick, an Avers or any others not yet committed and wanting to play college football.

I'm going to go off on an irrational tangent as I'm sure he's happy doing whatever it is that he's doing, but I selfishly wish Derek Tomlin had continued his career somewhere. He was the defensive version of Tommy Avers in my book - every time he was on the field you kind of made a mental note of where he was at pre-snap in anticipation of some eye-popping high effort play. No doubt in my mind that he could make someone's defense better at that level.

I have seen SMU play a few times this year, with special interest now that KP is the starter. That offense is perfct for TA. June Jones needs to see his highlights. Anyone have connections???? I have no doubt TA could be a D1 back. I believe the kid at Bosie St is about TA's size and doing quite well. Big 10, no not for TA, but you take an O scheme that uses him on quick plays and catching out of the backfield,,you bet he can produce anywhere. Looking forward to seeing him play baseball this spring. Love the kid and his heart!

If TA wanted to go D-1AA, DII or Ivy league school route, I think he could really contribute to schools in that space. Is there a home for him at the top 4 or 5 schools in the Big 12? I'd never count him out, but his challenge is to convince those programs to give him a chance. Where at one of these other programs, they might seek him out :)

i'm thinking and hoping it's just this one class. they seem very uninterested in football, as a whole. i think there will be several junior starters next season. the current sophomore class and soon-to-be junior class for the 2010 season is one of those classes that has alot of talent, much like this year's senior class.

It is not just what you see on the field....This is the silent killer of the program. The numbers I heard from the current junior class are....125 were in the program as frosh, and about 25 remain as juniors. The attrition is Alarming!!! This senior class knows that they are under the gun for having a winning season next year and they are already focused on busting their tails now to accomplish it. They know they are under scrutiny because there are only a few returning starters that will be senoirs. My son and several others that were double dippers and used as attack teams are hungry for their chance. Several good players moved over the last two years.

Good stuff Gasman.
Many (myself included) had already started to sell next years team short at the beggining of this season. But after some real thoughts this season, in regards to the head coach, the small returning class for 2010 and other things, I have realized that things are only as bad as you make them out to be.
Last season I was ready to can Hal, I even put up a "for sale sign" as my avatar. I fully regret doing that and it wasn't until after the North Shore loss that I really took a better look and decided that me judging every Carroll team by what Coach Dodge did is not only unfair to Hal and his staff, but extremely unfair to the kids in the Carroll program. After I came to peace with my own negative thoughts, it felt good to root for this team...coaches and players, expecially this Sr class. I then took a different approach to the whole process and thats when the avatar of Tommy went up. He reminded me of what was so very special about following the Carroll teams....A hard worker, a smart kid, on and off the football field, good values as a person, not just a football player, a teammate in the truest scense of the word. It felt good to to wrap my arms around that, rather then focus on negatives, I focused on the positives. It became easier to then see the relationship Hal has with his kids, that he can infact coach football, when my opinion wasn't jadded.
Anyway, I'm just rambling now. It feels good to be a Dragon, no matter what happens, doesn't mean we dont want to win, we do. Doesn't mean we dont expect to win, we do. It just means if we dont, that the sky isn't falling, we just simply fell short of our goal and we will be back the next season to try again.

.....we just simply fell short of our goal and we will be back the next season to try again.
How many years of "falling short of the goal" does it take to mean that we have a problem. Not for one moment am I suggesting we have a problem today;but in the long storied history of Dragon Football we are now in the third all time longest drought of not appearing in a State Quarter Final and fourth all time longest drought of not winning a state championship. The bar is set high, do we now lower the bar by accepting it is what it is.

I am one of those JV parents. The talk I have heard for some time is that the current senior group that just finished was a very strong class. The current sophomore class is very talented and this years juniors might be more focused on other sports but hasn't been touted as a strong football class since they were 8th graders. There are several talented juniors that will start next year in addition to the two that started this year.
When you have a no-cut football program it adds to the spirit of the school and the backing the program has. It also though soaks up some resources that other schools may not have to deal with. The amount of coaching time and practice JV Black gets is not what most would like to see. The school does only have so much money and coaches only have so much time. I prefer the current system which does allow the starters, the backups, the attack teams and others to call themselves Dragons. My son isn't a star but I expect he will play varsity next year.
I don't hear any negative comments about the football coaches at the JV and varsity level other than in this thread. I hear some Monday morning quarterbacking but that is an American tradition. While I think the goal each year should be to win district, advance in the playoffs, practice over Thanksgiving and anything beyond that is gravy and due to a mixture of talent, coaching, drive, scheduling, lack of injuries and some luck. For a top football program in Texas, I don't think it is realistic to expect a high school to win state more than once every 5 or 10 years. The titles SLC won earlier this decade were off the charts and were due to talent, coaching, drive of the players, lack of key player injuries and some luck. Statistically SLC probably used up its allotment on state titles for the next 25 years. Don't tell the kids that though. Are there better coaches at each and every coaching position? Maybe. But as a group the talent of our coaching is great and their emphasis on character building is very important as well.

There are jobs to get, Ex o-lineman to hang out with and girls to chase. Not to mention school work, prom and graduation. Plenty of memories. One of his proudest though is that he played for one of the best high school football programs in the history of the state of Texas. No one will be able to take that one from him or his mother and I. Toonman this team was good, but we just didn't have a Chase Daniel,Jacobson,Renfro or Cantu this year. We were banged up this year, I can't count how many are scheduling surgeries right now. Anyway we should be greatful to the coaches and players and move on.
I do not think many are blaming anyone. We ran into a great team that was hot and that is just the way it is. This team has been a treat to watch and similar to the '06 team. The '05 team was just a buzz saw and everyone pretty much expected them to be dominant. '06 was more lets see what we have team. '07 huge injuries before and during the season and last year was a bunch of Jr's learning the ropes as varsity players. The parents have been a joy and as sad is it that we lost, it always feels empty when the season is over even after the years we won state. I remember flying back from SA in '06 and wondering what the heck I was going to do the following weekend. I do not get that feeling when college and the NFL are over. These are kids and parents that we see in our neighborhoods, tailgate together and get to know each other very well that is what makes high school football so much fun.
Bleeds it has been a joy to watch your son play and your wife cheering at the games as it has been watching all the kids but your son plays with a lot of passion and that will serve him well on and off the field in the future. I love watching the Carroll kids on TV at the next level.

I see what you are saying but the players are the ones that ultamatley have to set the bar. They have to decide that they want to win state. I would love to see a state championship win but what I want means absolutley nothing.

Great post. I moved here 2 years ago and I can tell you that this program is the best I have ever seen win or loose. I just want the kids to know that we are behind them all the way.

These players wanted that State Championship this year! Our son was in the gym the day after Cedar Hill last year, preparing for this year. The road to State has gotten increasingly difficult in the metroplex. Unfortuntately, wanting something doesn't always make it happen, the stars and moons must also align.

as a player, my experiences didn't include a state title, though my older and younger friends did there at plano. it certainly wasn't for lack of effort, on our or the coaches part. injuries piled up at the wrong time and basketball came early.
as a dragon parent, with no little state ring buying experience, the luck was not always based on working harder. the same intensity and effort in the off-season as well as at every practice, that i have seen and experienced elsewhere, coupled with a seemingly unending series of near injury-free seasons, created the firestorm that was the dodge-led dragons.
i can honestly say that i have never witnessed a coaching staff that spent more effort preparing the kids for any contingency. the most easily apparent position player showing the results of this preparation was the qbs dodge coached. their successes were legendary.
the other area where dodge excelled was in turning out young men more ready to deal with the world. he recognized that players who have been taught some life-lessons on dealing with/through adversity will be more able to react correctly when, not if, the stars seem to be against you.
all this being said, i like coach wasson personally and have to judge his coaching from afar as i am no longer intimate with the team. i can't give him a carte blanche exception for the last 3 seasons lack of winning streak close, nor will i put all the blame on him. injuries have been more damaging in the last 3 years than any of the dodge years. to say he has failed is too harsh, and to say he is doing a great job is to accept a standard lower than that to which previous coaches were held.
i can only surmise that some of the carping going on is due to the recent arrivals who didn't see the struggles dodge went thru early on. it seems easy to farm a field once all the rocks and weeds have been removed. one wonders if this facade has made success harder, not easier.
good luck to all the graduating dragons and to the upcoming ones, there is no substitute for hard work in the off season. get busy.

Are the things I've been hearing about underclassmen leaving in droves true?
At the end of this season, the Dragon Football program had 685 students participating in grades 7 -12 - in excess of 100 per class on average. So if there is an issue, which I am not aware of, it does not appear to be a general problem with the Carroll program.

What great news - this has made my day. As I said in earlier post on this thread - seeing Tommy Avers run is what I will miss most about this season's ending and has most definitely been one of the highlights of this season's Dragon play. Tommy has one the best cuts, side steps and jinks by any Dragon Running back I have ever seen.

When I first saw him on the field, I called him a "jitterbug" back. This year, he developed so much strength he would jitterbug then power into folks. Loved it. Great reads and instinct.

They haven't been posted yet. Hal read them off at the Booster Club meeting. Cade is District Special Teams player, 5 offensive guys named to first team and, I think, 9 on defense to first team. Just about everybody else either made second team or honorable mention. Eventually they'll be posted at:

The only thing I did not like about TA's running was that I never saw him change hands with the ball to put it in the arm closets to the side line.
Other than that, the kid is a great RB. Not to say that takes away from his abilities. It just always worried me. As it does when I see anyone not doing it.

I agree with you! My son was in the gym the day after Abilene beat us in 2007. I think the players have a alot of pressure put on them because it is expected for them to win state by the community. I just think the players need to make their minds up that they want to win state and the community be behind them like we always have. They need to know we think they are the best win or loose.

speaking of working out. I seen Butler all last year at Velocity and spoke with him yesterday at Velocity He was there starting monday working out with Chris Wyatt who runs the place and was a college O-Lineman.
He said that's what got him the starting job this year was the work he put in at Velocity with an O-line coach training him.
Glad to see him already getting ready for next year:) would like my son to have that work ethic:(

I am working in my home office today and had the NFL Network on.They aired a story about a 16-17 year old young man named Will Graves from Mississippi who was paralyzed in a car accident. I think it's going to air again tomorrow morning. Check it out if you have time. A young man who is light years ahead of us adults who come here to rant & rave on a football board on how things should be done and who is to blame. His words and his family are a lesson for all of us.Have a great weekend!

Congratulations are also in order to Sean Landers. Sean was recently named the recipient of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Tom Landry Male Athlete of the Year award.
Landers, who is an FCA class president, was honored at the “Sharing the Victory” banquet Nov. 16 at the Fort Worth Hilton. Landers is a first-team All-District 6-5A receiver on the football team and is an outfielder in baseball. Sean is also an honor student and member of the Varsity Football Leadership Council and regularly leads the Football Huddle group for FCA.

True but that's 5A football in Texas, especially after the first two rounds. Bowie is dripping in talent and now at home. Chill was amazingly talented and is at home. How do you think Cujo feels today? What about Skyline? Desoto?
