Kind of what my last two posts in this thread have said.

I think you guys will beat Lewisvile, but as I pointed out earlier your playoff ticket is not fully punched yet.

But as I also said, it's already established that your first opponent will be Heritage. That will be a GREAT matchup.

Hey Dragon fans... There are alot of teams that are represented by their fans with a dedicated thread... And we are one of the greatest programs in the history of Texas, so I figured we should have our own as well. This isnt intended to replace the weekly game threads.. Its just a place for Dragon fans to come to.

While here feel free to discuss all things that are Carroll Dragons..ie.. players, coaches, future Dragons, plays, or whatever else..

My family and I moved from California to Southlake over the summer for two reasons, "the schools and the tradition". Prior to moving here we fell in love with the town, the dedication to the school system and its athletics.

I have young daughters who once only wore Pink and now has been replaced by Green. Within the first week of school our daughter in kindergarten was signing the Carroll Dragon fight song, word for word. We attend all Southlake town activites, football and the HS girls volleyball games.

We are very proud of this town and its athletics. This past friday a handful of the varsity football team went to my daughters elementary school and sat down with the students to discuss healthy decisions in everyday life ie; healthy food, say no to drugs, etc.... All weekend she talked all about "number so and so who plays such and such postition taught me about this and that". Believe me, from were we come from in Calfornia this does not happen. Granted this happens in other towns and cities, but this is Southlake and I'm proud of what my children are learning in the schools, the community and their friends.

By the way we are from Mater Dei and De La Salle.

The players visiting the schools happens frequently and is part of PALS, which is a course for the Senior class where they go to a specific class once a week and teach the children responsibility etc.

Yeah, you may have had some injuries, but two of them WERE NOT your starting QB and MLB, brutha. You won fair and square but your program doesn't even compare. String a few titles together before you pop off and show your ignorance. Act like you've been there before.

DP directed an O that had 430+ yards and no turnovers in a Dist championship game with the D spying on him and delivering punishing hits. That was a solid performance by a QB in his 3rd game. Nuf said.

Not quite. Avers had over 200 + yards rushing, Piland has double the rushing attempts and got 60. Not altogether his fault. Coaches call plays. Players execute. 1 exception...options...pitch the ball when the end pinches in. Look at his passing numbers. Accuracy has been his problem all along. Don't want to bash a kid, but solid it wasn't.

It's kind of hard to wish for both those things.....The Dragons can't go very far in the PO's without facing large talented OL's. To make the Region 1 finals, our PO road will have to go through CHHS and then likely Cedar Hill and Abilene.

So if we want to be playing several weeks down the road, we'd better get our defensive problems fixed and start playing like we did earlier in the season. This week against LV would be an excellent time for the defense to re-emerge.......:)

Taking it to an extreme but we optioned our way to the school record for offensive points in 92. I'd really like to see the rush part of this offense exploited more appropriately as Piland gains experience and/or as we await the return of Padron. Playing to an obvious strength and decreasing the minutes the defense is on the field is not a bad strategy right now.

You all know I'm a little removed from the day to day movements of the program. Something I've not seen seriously discussed has been the struggles of our defense over the last month. Specifically how it contrasts to the utter dominance they displayed early. Our predistrict schedule was the best we've played in years, even minus the NS game, so the numbers weren't "artificial". I know we've been dinged but has injury been the issue? I'm wondering what the problem is perceived to be by those that are able to attend every week. If we can keep this to strictly football, let's discuss. If you have other opinions, please pm me. Thanks!

We're going to need a number of areas to step up and improve in November. Therefore, as a very novice football expert, here would be my list of drills to include in practice to best prepare for that improvement...

* Assuming you can help a young and talented QB on this phase of the game, run a drill in which the primary receiver is covered. QB must look for at least one additional receiver to throw to, before tucking it in and running.

* Going at 3/4 speed, run a ball carrier at a defensive player and force the tackler to break down and wrap up the runner's legs, versus jumping on his back and riding him to the ground.

* Oklahoma drill, or at least, that's what we called it. Put a blocker on a defensive member with a runner behind him to run thru a 5 foot path. Defensive player must shed his block and fill that path, versus getting locked up.

* Throw a football on the ground and make 2 players fight each other to cover it up. Seen that happen in a Dragon game recently?

* Run a QB option drill that results in a pitch to the trailing back.

* Go under center, take a snap and sneak it behind your best guard for one yard.

I know we do some of these already but we need more work...

Welcome back GreenDay - we missed you! So how was Vegas? and how does it feel to be almost 51?:D

I think we are vulnerable to a big and athletic o-line. Our middle guys are a tad small for defensive tackles and #32 was coming off an injury. Not 100% I assure you. Safties and corners were making a lot of tackles. When the safties play up and the guy with the ball breaks into the secondary he is gone. We have some big guys on the sideline and sub-varsity. Now they don't fit the prototypical small but quick mold we have. They can tie up blockers though. I recommend we put them in when we play this type of line. Just my opinion.

We have had injuries or missing folks that started the season. As you know, nothing we can do there. We must adjust to make it past these type of teams to go deep or win state. The other thing we need is an offense that can keep up with a struggling defense. Our QB is getting better every week. We were in the Hebron game until the goal line stand.

This is the way I see it from the stands. I really don't have any inside information and the coaches haven't called on me yet. I will be ready if they need me though.;) I love this team win or lose so I will be there Friday doing what I can. You will know I am there because I have a really big mouth.:)

We could have won this game against a very good Hebron team. We very well could have went in at half 21-16 us, but we dropped the ball. In the third quarter we had a sorry punt that went out at the 45 and they scored to go ahead 23-14. In the fourth down 30-28 still could have won, the two long drives did us in. Result 44-28. We had 2-3 people that continually could not tackle. They ran the same play over and over. Our defense is to predictable, we must run more stunts with our defensive ends. Our tackles need to get up on the ball and both should not be in the A gap at the same time, to easy to angle block.

These young men will come together this week and the week's to come, I expect to be playing the week of Thanksgiving and playing Hebron again.

Sorry for the long post!

With regards to the Hebron game, that one was abit of a heartbreaker. There were many opportunities that were not seized. Credit the Hawks for most of those, as they played very well. It's a fine line between being average and good and a small step from being good to being great. I am on their side, too, and would love a second shot at Hebron. If we can stay together and correct a few things we can get there.

Aren't Mater Dei and De La Salle private schools? That would explain the lack of community support. I think you need to look at a town like Mission Viejo to compare.

Both are private schools but are quite different. DLS is a small, Catholic school with an enrollment of around 1000. Mater Dei is a large, Catholic school with an enrollment closer to 2600. Both have great support but it is on a much smaller scale, as you mentioned. It's different when you do not have an entire town behind you. Having watched some games on tv that included programs like Long Beach Poly and Mission Viejo, I can say I'm largely unimpressed with the size of both crowd and facility. It's just not the same as you see here. The football is good but the overall event is subpar by comparison.

An interesting sidenote about Volleyball is an issue discussed on here lately. Carroll, Coppell, and Marcus all tied for the district championship. That meant a coin flip was used to decide playoff seeds for the three teams. In 5-5A Keller Central and Keller tied for second and had a coin flip to decide the seeding.

Football people don't seem to like the coin flip but I didn't see any argument against it on 5Atexasvolleyball.com,;)

Based on what I saw in the PW, Arl, and Katy CR games this team can step up and get back in the game. We gave up what 1 TD per game. We fumbled the opening KO in PW and held them to 3 until late in the game. Arl has been putting up solid #'s all season. CR's only loss is to SLC. We have played 3 bad road games in our district. We have totally dominated our apponents at home. I am hopeful that we can just get back to the basics (and pull 1 safety back against running teams - see I'm trying not to armchair but it is tough) and eliminate the big plays we will have a chance against anybody. Saw this on Scout.com from 10/29.
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Tuesday that the club has signed free agent kicker Garrett Hartley after a tryout at the team’s practice facility earlier in the day.

“We conducted an audition this afternoon for punters and kickers in an effort to boast our special teams play,” said Loomis. “We were impressed with Garrett throughout the competitive sessions and we will continue to evaluate the positions closely throughout the remainder of the season.”

Hartley is a rookie kicker who signed with the Denver Broncos out of the University of Oklahoma in April. He was released by Denver prior to training camp. A two-time second-team All-Big 12 Conference selection, the 5-foot-8, 196-pound native of Southlake, Texas, played in 43 career games for the Sooners and was successful on 47 of 58 field goals and went 169-for-176 on extra points. The right-footed kicker kicked a career-long 53-yard field goal in his senior season.

Okay, maybe I am in denial but here is the way I see the defense. We struggle against big athletic o-lines. We do not struggle against the pass since Shawn Hoagland showed up to complement Kacy Rodgers. Unless you specialize in running we will dog you and shut you down.

In the Hebron game we were in it until late in the 4th. Our offense doesn't score like it did with Padro but DP is getting better. Coppell was an eery night. They wanted us bad. The defense gave up 57 points but was put in several bad field positions because of poor special teams plays or turnovers. And it took double overtime to beat us.

All I am saying to Dragon fans is we still have a damn good football team. I don't care what outsiders think but I would want to kick this Dragon unless I was sure it was already dead.

Agreed. But I am somewhat enjoying the "underdog" status for once, and numerous folks are counting us as 1 and out in the p/o, perhaps giving us a bit more incentive. ;) (Don't forget we have Lewisville first. Must take care of bidness there). It could happen (the 1 and out), we should never take CHHS lightly and they will really want this one. But the matchup should be more favorable that say Hebron or AHS.

That said, the team has shown flashes of brilliance as you noted. And the losses have in some ways been good for us in that we have learned we are not invincible, we can actually lose a game. or even two. And we can learn that a two loss team can go far if we understand the losses. The only concern I have is that, unlike Katy who has continued to improve over the season, we have been spotty. I would absolutely love to have a 2 loss Katy playing a 2 loss Carroll for state, both with young teams and great programs. But that is way ahead of myself.

And by the way, I think the answer is Dangerfield.

Pennington was the original Texas Stadium for Carroll fans. Many of our firsts were secured there. The first heartbreak that was the 1987 loss to McGregor ran even deeper than the Abilene loss last season, I assure you. The first birth to a title game was secured there the following season with victory over Decatur. Love runs deep for Pennington. Should have disqualified the good Doc on this one. Carroll played it's first game at Texas Stadium against the mighty Daingerfield in November of 1988. The Tigers were it in 3A before Carroll exploded onto the scene. They had owned the 80's. They were also the top ranked team in the state. Few thought that Carroll would be up to the challenge. Things were decided quickly in this third round matchup. We exploded onto the scene with a 42-13 victory that wasn't even that close. This victory was really the defining moment for our eventual run in 3A.

Carroll beat Dangerfield in Texas Stadium somewhere along the lines of 44-12 in 1988. In the '89 game, as I recall, the game came down to the final play before Carroll lost. But I don't recall the score (probably on purpose.)

I think the year Carroll beat them they were #1.... and the Dragons smashed them... And wasnt the following year Carroll #1 when they beat us?.. But it was much closer I think..

Yes, yes and yes. We were top ranked but, to be fair, we were over ranked that year. The team was primarily juniors and the team was not near the beasts of 87 & 88. The game was very close and was decided, ultimately, when we ran out of time. A couple of key near plays by underclassmen cost us that game but Daingerfield played a great, great defensive game.

11-06-2008, 12:38 PM

They really can be a great football team. They just need that break through game or moment where they made the key play at the right moment in a PO game. They are 1-2 in close games and 5 typical SLC poundings. All 3 close games were on the road with teams that were really ready to bring "the kitchen sink" in terms of effort and committment. Rumor has it 1 team even spent the night on the field after the game and had t-shirts printed with the score. It is a good thing to be getting the "kitchen sink" every week, but maybe we will start bringing the "rest of the kitchen" to the party.;)

Just remember, Lewisville and especially Colleyville will bring the kitchen sink as well. Lewisville has nothing to lose and everything to win, a dangerous situation. And Colleyville will really want to get past us in a year everyone sees us as vulnerable. They will bring the sink, garbage disposal, plumbing, dishwasher, etc.

I agree we are tantalizingly close. But we have to focus JUST LIKE THOSE TEAMS and we have to want it JUST AS MUCH. Colleyville will want their first ever victory over the Dragons.

It's one of the better press boxes in the area, especially considering it's age. (plus, you can never go wrong with good press box catering -- I won't say where it's from but it's somewhere very close to the stadium that is very tasty) Northwest takes the cake so far though, although I'm willing to bet Carroll Dragon and Birdville give it a run for it's money as far as the latest technology and a good broadcast setup. Fair enough. The loss to Daingerfield in 1989 has two interesting tidbits attached to it. The first would be that 1989 would be the only year from 1987-1993 that Carroll failed to win it's region and advance to the semifinal round, at least. Second, the 13 points Daingerfield held us to is the second lowest Carroll was held to while in 3A. Anyone know the lowest?

For the record, I just am not interested in work today. Hence the historic trivia!:D

In addition to the above listed facts, the loss in 89 marked the end of the longest win streak in Dragon history, to that point, at 26 games. We would later go on to have a 46-0-1 record from 91-93, including the last 32 in a row.

That would be incorrect but your info on the Springtown game requires an update to my post.(Can't believe I missed that one!) The 7 Springtown held us to in 1986 was, in fact, the second lowest total we were ever held to in 3A and only the 3rd time we failed to score double digits. Yup. In the 1990 semifinals, the Vernon Lions held us to 6 points. They were held to 11 themseves with 6 coming on the only big play of the game, a long run down the sideline in the first quarter, I believe.

1) 6 Points - Vernon - semifinal game
2) a - 7 points- Springtown - district game
b - 7 points - Burnet - semifinal game
3) a - 13 points - Frisco - first game in 3A - only one of these five that was a win.
b - 13 points - Daingerfield - 3rd round p/o

IMO, that run through 3A was the most dominating football I have ever seen. Teams would let the clock run for most of the second half in order to get the game over. The way we ran the 'bone was a thing of beauty. We ran this counter and the HB would be off to the races.

In 8 years of 3A football, Carroll went 112-5-1. They won 3 state titles, 6 regional titles and 7 district title. The average score of a Carroll game in those 8 years was 40.03 to 7.47. That's 4,732 points for us and only 881 against in 8 years. We played a nasty brand of defense and flat ran you over on offense. The 1992 team holds the school record for offensive points at 803. That total was on the national top ten list for several years. Ultimately, the 5A run wins out because it produced more titles and had never been done in 5A before but, in many ways, I still think the 3A run is just or more impressive.

Random adults always tell my parents how respectful I am, people will tell my managers at work how polite and how I took care of them. Many adults tell me how for someone my age I am very knowledgeable. I have intellectual conversations with adults over very broad subjects.

My parents put me in a great spot to be successful with whatever I want. They taught me many things and many important values in life. I ALREADY am starting to save for MY retirement. Please tell good Dr., since I am sure you are reading this.... were the Dragon fatithful always so full of themselves and boastful? Is that how the Tradition was created? I am willing to bet that the new generation (last 5 years) of supporters has done more to tear down, to tarnish that Tradition than build it up...

I can only be thankful that I am not in the shoes of a Dragon Council Member watching it deteriorate in such a fashion... with the mouth piece of the program being such disrespectful,
arrogant p r i c k s as these...

How did I get dragged into this? There are a handful of Dragon fans who get carried away on line on occasion. (but then I readily admit that I do not always appreciate what a number of 18 and 19 year olds find funny.) That hardly makes the Dragon faithful "full of themselves and boastful" any more than CHHS fans are boors due to the antics of a few. At the same time, all Carroll fans have a well-earned right to be extraordinarily proud of what the Dragons have managed to accomplish over the past twenty years in general and the period since moving up to 5A in particular.

The "tradition" was formed by Carroll's performance on the field and in the classroom. One merely needs to start to count the number of championships that these students have managed to generate over th years to appreciate what they have accomplished. Plus those same students have managed to do quite well, for the most part, in the classroom, consistently placing athletes in the service acadamies, Ivy league schools and other stand-out academic institutions along with many other fine schools (and some not so fine as well.)

As a Council member, I judge the program and its participants as a whole, not by occasional online comments that I might not have made. But then a bunch of folks on here might not readily approve of mine either. Now, the last line of your posting appears that it may have been directed more at me. Are you suggesting that as a fan of Carroll that somehow I am being a disrespectful, arrogant :Censor:?

The "Protecting of the Tradition" is not only football, but it is everything that is Carroll. The desire to be the best and command excellence. Why does Carroll do so well in not only sports, but academics? Must be something with the "whole" school buying into this and working hard. Our parents pushing us.

An example that many people don't know, as the Carroll Band travels, we ALWAYS cleaned up after ourselves. The directors made sure we left our area cleaner than it was before we got there. After all our games, people will go through stands (band kids), and collect garbage. I've done that on a few occasions, as has yankee.

Denton Ryan is playing a game at Dragon stadium on Thursday, should be interesting to see. I'll be there (of course). Anyone else going?

In regards to the CHHS/Carroll game, what do we know about CHHS ability to run? If that isn't there, then I suspect we take it handily. If it IS there, then I foresee something like a Coppell game. So I could see either:

a. 45 - 28, SLC or
b. 55-53 with whoever makes the fewest mistakes on top.

We will need the secondary to have a big morning either way, with multiple sacks to contain.

Bryon Head also has more receptions than any of their WR's (55) coming out of the backfield. He is one of the primary threats in their offense. The Dragon D will really need to focus on holding him down.

We dealt with that same issue re: Flower Mound. Shut down the Ashley to 15 yards receiving and 11 rushing I believe, and it was very few receptions. Of course on special teams he was a monster! :)

Indeed. He's a beast. If you discount their running game because he only has 800 rushing yards, then you've just discounted the '99 Rams because Marshall Faulk "averaged less than 100 rushing yards/game". Obviously I've exaggerated a bit but Head is that type of player. The Panthers will get the ball in his hands however they need to. If the running lanes aren't open, he'll be open on a swing pass or on the short routes. You have to understand that about 1/3 of his receptions and receiving yards can be treated like rushing yards because in running situations they'll use him on short pass routes instead.

But, if you shut Head down you've won half the battle. You still have to contend with Steven Hill.

Yes, he and Brandon Defrance both have over 50 catches this season.. Byron only has 3 recieveing tds though, and Defrance has 9.. As long as we can keep a linebacker watching him we should be fine..

Not trying to be police here or a jerk and I apologize if it's come across that way. (Believe me, I could be much more of a jerk if warranted) I agree with the points you've been making. Just trying to help you out because there are some that will say "if he doesn't even know the guy's name he hasn't done as much homework on him as he thinks he has." But again, I think you know the Heritage team well and you know what you're talking about. He's the focal point of the offense and dictates how well they'll move the ball.

Well, someone needs to say this. Byron, Bryant, Brian, Bill, Bob or whatever his name is has been on the Heritage varsity since his sophmore year. He has never been a factor against us. Shocking as it may be to some, that pattern will continue. Let's not confuse him with the running backs from Marcus and Hebron. Those two are special runners that exploited a weakness so bad it's hard to even describe correctly. Head is a talented player but he is not anywhere near their class. The key to this game is the Dragon dline versus the Panther oline because the qb for Colleyville is the most critical part of their offensive machine. He takes all the snaps, makes all the reads and is responsible for every decision. If he cannot find his rhthym, Colleyville will fall by a couple of touchdown and there will not be a thing Head can do to stop that from happening. I look for Avers to outshine him considerably in this one.

I agree with your read on the defensive adjustments and these 4 can go a long way to set the tone for their unit.

We are also fortunate to be starting our playoff run against a team that we have a lot of experience playing in the past. Every team we played this year was a "new opponent" for the Dragons. While studying film helps teams prepare, there's a lot to be said for the familiarity we had the past 4 seasons in district 5-5A. That familiarity hasn't been there all season until this week.

If the Dragons get by 9-1 CHHS, then they would likely play 10-1 Cedar Hill (with Mendoza at D Coordinator), then 12-0 Abilene (huge rematch), followed by 12-1 Bowie (or Richland).

Region 1 D2 is by far the toughest region, at least in D2. we've done it before!

More likely a rematch with Hebron at that point but our record will only be 10-3. :D

quite a lot of them, yes.

there are quite a few people from hebron here, as well as coppell, and they acted in a totally classless fashion after those games.

My daughter's senior class at Hebron has 2-3 people at TAMS from it.

hm.

not surprising, roughly 65 people have failed out of TAMS so far from my class.

proportions would say that about 2 of those would be from Hebron.

that means about 40 from Plano :D

Interesting. Didn't know you could fail out of TAMS. Where do those people go? Nobody has returned to Hebron that left their soph. year.

The people recruited for TAMS are usually pretty talented and gifted (Phoenix aside :D). They would complete their education somewhere besides McDonalds even if they left TAMS, imo.

Well, it's double for me. Louisiana playoffs start this weekend as well. ECA is ranked #2 in powerratings. They have the #31 ranked team coming to Shreveport Friday to be schooled on scoring. lol. They'll have an easy week this week. But still, it's the playoffs. My favorite time of year. Next to..uh.. No, this is it. My favorite season. 2nd season.

Ima have to get with you before this weekend so we can meet up and stuff. I dont know where anything is in DFW. I'll give you a shout prolly wed or thurs. so we can make a plan.

Bragging about being ranked #2 in class 1A!

yes, you must keep a 3.0 gpa to stay here. If you fail out early on, most people go back to their old high schools. Some get a GED, and some apply early to and get in to colleges. If nobody from Hebron failed, how are there kids from TAMS in your daughters senior class?

Maybe he means "same graduating year"? Like if they didn't do TAMS?

Same graduating year, obviously. Most leave for TAMS during their Soph. year and don't return.

Nobody from the top 10 in her class went to TAMS this time.
