Westlake will don our Away team White as THE BIGGEST rivalry in Austin pins us against the Maroons of Austin High. The Chaps are 16-2 in the series, however the 2 losses have come in the last two consecutive years. Westlake has not had a fantastic season thus far. However, we do have a winning district record (4-4, 4-1 in district). Austin High is 5-3 with 3 district wins and two losses. It's fair to say the Chaps want it more, but that the Maroons are more confident after a 3 point victory that went down to the wire last season.
Go CHAPS!

I think that margin might be a little wide but I think Westlake gets the win and forces a 3-way tie. That 0-3 start seems a long time ago, doesn't it? And how big was that win over Bowie?

Should be a great game. I'll be in Lubbock though.

Considering there are very, very few reasons to ever visit Lubbock, I'm betting you're in Jones Stadium tomorrow night.

I was. It was very sweet. All we have to do is beat Akins next week (their scouts actually sat in the row below us tonight), and we are co-district champions with Bowie and Pflugerville.
I do have to say that I believe Austin High is definitely a step down from Bowie, Pflugerville, and Westlake in caliber. So I'm not real optimistic about their playoff prospects, although I wish they'd do well. Their D1 player, Blake, is really good. But they lost a couple of D1 players from last year, so they're not nearly as strong.
Also, the Westlake crowd yelled all night (which is very unusual), and for some reason we were seated on the traditional "home" side. Do they do this for all games now?

Austin sat on the side East side when we played down there too. sat on the westlake side this week. chap fans were nervous in the 3rd quarter when Austin made it 21-14. it was a lot closer than the 42-21 score would indicate. maroons didnt seem to know what they wanted to do. they tried some shotgun zone read and single wing. blake had a much better game then when we saw them earlier.

42-14, Austin really isn't a very good team, poor defense and no running game. OL is big, but not aggressive, same goes for defense, but I'd rather have fast on defense than big. Blake was held in check by Bowie and P-ville.

A lot closer than the score would indicate? We were never behind. Sure, when we almost went up three touchdowns before half, and they came back and made two scores, anyone would become worried, but the Chaps adjusted and took control of the game. You might also remember that's when our kicker was injured on a blocked extra point (he's also our punter), so there was a little settling down at that position (one of the AHS scores was a run back of a kick off). I think momentum started shifting, which it usually does several times during a game.
Check the stats for how close a game it was. One of our receivers had over 200 yards by himself.

And as for "closer than the 42-21 score would indicate"--that last AHS touchdown was in your dreams. The real score was 42-14.

I believe Austin still has to beat Anderson before they're officially in the playoffs. Normally, you'd think that'd be an easy win, but it may very well be down to the wire, if not (dare I say it) an Anderson win.
That's just a House Park thing. We've always been on that side of the stadium when we've played Austin High there. Hey, if they're too confused to tell which side is which... lol.
Let's just hope The Chaps can make something happen in the playoffs.

I do not know if Westlake has the D to go deep into the playoffs but they have developed significantly over the season and those early losses might have served them well in the long run.

We had to miss the game at House Park in 2006, but before that we had always sat on the east side. It's fine--puts the setting sun in the eyes of the home crowd instead of the visitors.
And I second the motion about the playoffs. It would be a little strange to play Madison--it would be the first time since our 2003 bi-district win over them where their player was paralyzed--something none of us present that day will ever forget.

The Away side at House Park has more seats.
But it's kind of sad that you anticipate more visitors than fans of your own, isn't it? I can remember friends from AHS scrambling for tickets to games at our stadium, and we seat considerably more than House Park.

If you are in London, I will tell you that the defense played extremely well last night. There was a period at the beginning of the second half when AHS came up with a new wrinkle that gave us some trouble, but they stuck with it, bent, but didn't break, and took control of the game back. Indeed, there was no score at the end of the first quarter. I thought this would be a high scoring game. That didn't materialize until the fourth quarter on our side when we wore them down.
I was especially concerned about this game because AHS has the large lines that we lack. In the Pflugerville game, our quarterback seemed particularly spooked and vulnerable to their defensive line (they have a UT recruit in the defensive line). In some ways I wish we could replay that game, because I think we'd win if we played again, but it's always hard to beat a team twice in the same year.
I was also pleasantly surprised last night when one of our linebackers ran down AHS ace Blake when he broke through for a long gain. Though it was probably Swope's younger brother, the DB, who's also a sprinter. But it was an overachieving linebacker instead.
Of course we'll be far more tested in the play-offs.

I don't know what you mean.
The Away side has more seats, so Austin takes it when they play Westlake. The reason the Home side has fewer is because of the street behind it cutting at an odd angle and not allowing the stands to be as large.
It has nothing to do with expecting fewer fans. In fact, if they move to the larger side, they expect more fans. It's an old stadium. I have no idea which side was Home way back when it was first built.

Austin High always sits on that side, not just when they play Westlake. Steve Davis started that when he was the head coach there and it has stuck.

Ok, I went and looked at a map and tried to figure out House Park.
I've never been to an Austin game without Bowie, and I can't remember what side Bowie sat on when we last played there. What confused me is that we played at House Park vs. home Anderson. They sat on the press box side.
But the "traditional" home side, which I guess just means press box side, has fewer seats than the other side. So the Home side for Austin is the side without the press box, from what I gather from the Westlake posters.

That would explain it, because I've been attending games there since Davis was our offensive coordinator. And I missed a few games when my college-aged daughter would come home on fall break on the AHS game weekend and want to do something else. I guess it's been longer than I thought since I'd been to a game there.
