in turnovers! No just got that feeling from talking to a few people. Outlaw may have to pull a rabbit out his rearend but I think Lufkin wins this game by a touchdown. Earlier I thought there was no way in heck Lufkin wins, but I think Lufkin is gonna catch fire right now. Don't bet the farm on it, just throwing my feelings out there to be smashed by everybody!:D

If there's going to be an upset at 'The Bank' this weekend, I will be there to personally witness it. On the other hand, I will have my binoculars focused on coach Outlaw.
This game is much like the Katy-Cinco game. Not much impact on the playoff scenario, but a bunch of district pride at stake.
What a great opportunity for both teams to get ready for the playoffs. Should be some good football. I just pray for no injuries. Hate to see TWHS or LP limp into the playoffs with major injuries.
I will not be surprised of any direction this game goes. Could be good for LP or could be bad. I just don't have a feeling either way. If I hadn't watched every game this year I might be a little more one way or the other, but I seen some real messes this year. They could could catch fire and hang onto the ball which would have made a difference in every loss this year. Right now that is the difference!

Too much firepower from the boys in skirts. Too much symmetry among the seniors. LP could play their best, but it still won't be enough. But I've been wrong before. Lots of times.
Those travelling from Lufkin, Katy and other places, be safe.

The Woodlands is no joke this season. Those kids are doing great things with the ball in their hands. I would never bet against Lufkin. They'll always have a chance with their talent & Outlaw but I just don't see it this year.

If we come out like we did against North Shore, stretch the field vertically, play smart and get two or three scores on the board before intermission.... you never know.
I wouldn't "bank" on it, but it definitely could happen. Not many 4-4 teams in Texas better than Lufkin. :D

In the weekly Lufkin Daily News Pick-em challenge, in which local reporters and local folks pick the area scores (most papers have one), four of the ten pickers selected the Woodlands.
Please Note: - This is the first time I can ever remember one, let alone 4 folks picking against Lufkin.
A new world for the Pack.

Will take a lot more than a chocolate covered bunny to win this game. Lufkin has earned the Highlanders respect and complete attention and that probably doesn't bode well for LP.

I've been to all of Lp games and seen several differnt teams in purple....I havn't seen one play by the woodlands this season. Lufkin imo has had ample oppurtunity to win sevaral of those losses, if not for the inconsistancy of the offense. Pulling it together at this point would signal the first loss for the woodlands for the season. The defense has been good at most games except at the conroe game. I'll pick Lp,... simply. We are Lufkin!

Earlier this week, I had hope for Lufkin in this game. It is gone. I wish I felt differently. I think the Lufkin gets shown just how bad their offense is tomorrow. Now I hope the Homers don't misconstrue that last sentence. I'm not saying the players are bad. As a matter of fact, this year's WR corps is very talented. Just can't get the ball to them. That spells doom in the spread offense. Sorry. That's just how I see it.

If The Pack hangs a W this weekend, it will be the biggest shocker to hit the H-town area since TWHS cakewalked Katy early on.
There has not been near enough sign of synergy and consistency over the last few weeks to bring LP into the same league as the way TWHS appears to be playing.
This could be a very good game, and LP may be in it to win it late, but it could very easily be a rout. Either way I'm pulling for The Pack and hoping the best. However from what's taken place thus far from both teams, a LP victory would have to be considered a shocker.

We haven't won a state title since 2001, but most people would call getting to the state semi's in 2002, 2004, and 2005 huge games. No need to re-talk the three losses to SLC - two of which were decided on the final play of the game.
If you want to talk about since 2006 - I'll probably agree with you. We've under-achieved since Nov. 2006.

I will be interested to see how The Woodlands does tonight. I've had the feeling the last few weeks that the Highlanders might be "plateauing" a little bit. Highlander fans can give more input there, but they haven't been as dominant since the hurricane break. The defense is allowing more production than I thought they would after seeing them early on. The Woods looked to have their best defense since 2006, but I am not as confident of that now.

I agree somewhat with you --- I have seen a lack of intensity ---kinda like now they expect to win --not on a mission to prove that they can --kinda coasting
one other thing is I am seeing more " stupid " penalties --- not dirty late hits --- but if they get hit or shoved late --they retaliate with a shove or a shot - the 2nd hit is what the refs usually see -- so there goes 15 yd penalty --sometimes at a critical time for posssension or field position - all for unchecked egos & lack of team interest and disipline
still have talent to go long way -- but they need to address intensity & disipline

Hard to pick against TWHS with the core not having ever lost. One big word to describe this game -

A loss here at the hands of the Panthers could be a mixed blessing to the Highlanders. Anyone who counts Lufkin out of this game would be foolish.

The Pack leads the Highlanders 8-0 at halftime!!! I am kinda shocked that the Woodland's were shutout in the first half though. You are looking at a team that gives up only 7.5 points per game, and Lufkin already has 8 against them. Not to mention, they average over 40 points per game as well. Man, this is exciting!!! Looks like Lufkin is coming through just at the right time of the season. Go PACK!!!!!!!!!

Highlanders, the only thing you lost tonight is the targets on your back. Not a bad thing. Some adjustments obviously need to be made. It's mainly up to the coaches. You guys will be ok. Keep your focus.
The last run by TreVon (?) to seal the game. One for the ages. Should be a fixture on the big screen at the Abe.

3 years in a row Lufkin has beaten both halves of The Woodlands (TW and CP)
After the game tonight, it brought me back to what Ivan Lendl said to Brad Gilbert during their playing days. "I could be on my death bed with 120 temperature, you'll still never beat me"
After the last 2 weeks. That's what it felt like. Lufkin can be having the worst of years losing to 1a schools and as certain as death itself, they'll still beat both Woodlands schools.

Questions to the TWHS fans.
Could a better job have been done making in game adjustments tonight?
Should Eastman have come in maybe just after halftime to play QB.?
Should Art Arias have been utilized to give the running game a different look?
Have they totally abandoned the pro set or can they still go to it if the Spread is ineffective like it was tonight?

So many angles to this game, and it's outcome. First off, the Lufkin Defense was very good and very ready to stop the running game of The Woodlands. Mucho Kudos for the Panthers on that. Their D-Line owned the L.O.S.
But, aside from the overall picture, how about the missed chip shot field goal in the first half? That's 3 points The Woodlands wishes they had.
How about the interception by The Woodlands in the first half that was nullified by a silly offsides penalty? That hurt. TWHS had several offsides penalties. Very unlike them.
How about The Woodlands going for 2, down 6-8, and not getting it. Those 2 points proved to be big.
There was a clear fumble by the LP running back and a recovery by TWHS with 2 minutes left in the game, inside the LP 45, and the sorry *** refs missed it. It was a no brainer.
All in all, LP earned this one. No hard feelings. TWHS didn't come top play. Little passion and no sense of urgency. At least that's how it appeared in the first half. And LP's defense was too solid to play from behind against. Not to mention TWHS couldn't get the stops they needed in the 4th qtr.
In the end, this could be a blessing in disguise. TWHS hasn't been challenged all year, and going in to the playoffs, this could be exactly what they need. They better know now that you gotta bring your "A" game every week or your season is over. After they beat New Caney next week, they better know that every game is the most important game of their life.

The good news for The Woodlands is that they won't see another defensive front like that unless they play North Shore, Euless Trinity or Pflugerville.
I am more the pleasently surprised....ok to be honest i was screaming at my radio at the family reunion and ended up humming the songs along with the band so i was more than a little surprised.

Cannot go helmet to helmet with the Lufkin front 7. Need to go diagonally away from them, then burst the other direction against the pursuit. I'm sure Bob Barret from Oak Ridge knows this. This might be an interesting matchup.

Yeah I wouldn't hold this against the Woodlands too much when assesing the contenders. Very few teams could pull off what Lufkin did tonight, and you have to give that credit to the Pack. No, Coach Outlaw hadn't forgotten how to coach. And yes, Lufkin still has the talent. That's said it's still gonna take a special 4 quarters of football to knock of the Woodlands, what we learned today is the same is also true of Lufkin when the play inspired but also maintain their composure.

How about the safety for Lufkin early in the game that wasn't called?

This is the best analysis of the game/situation. There are a couple of things that must be mentioned.
1. The bad snaps in the first half should have been addressed immediately. These snaps lead to a few blown plays and, most critically, the missed FG that, sadly, was the difference in the final score.
2. Changing the game plan just to play Lufkin and then not making immediate changes when the play calls weren't working. This was pure 2007 coaching. The coaches have been doing a pretty decent job this year with a lot of credit to the talent on the field overcoming some questionable calls.
IMHO, the BIGGEST factor in the final score, which had me screaming bloody murder and extremely :Censor: off, was going for two after the first TD. It was way too early in the game to be worried about being tied. A) The offense didn't yet have a good feel for any defensive weak spots and B) failure to convert is another negative nail in the coffin.
Overall, Lufkin came to win and The Woodlands had too many mental mistakes to do anything about it.

How about the safety for Lufkin early in the game that wasn't called?
I'll have to look at the film to see if it was or wasn't. If it was a bad call then Lufkin got one back when they didn't call the fumble that TW recovered.
Lufkins radio announcers where saying there was alot of bad spotting of the ball on both teams. Wasnt biased one way or another, just generaly bad. I wasn't there so dont know, but in my exp when thats happening the refs just are not to into the game and their will be alot of bad/iffy calls on everyone.
On the radio it sounded like Lufkin coaches did a great job prepareing for what the woodlands had and Lufkins D line owned Woodlands O line all night. That how it looked to the woodlands guys? Our radio guys can get a little... enthuisiastic at times and wanted to see how accurate they were being.
Oh and the woodlands O was trying some things different and it just wasnt working right?

#65 for the Panthers is a stud. His defensive play always improved when #60 went in. #60 played both ways. He'd play 1 down and then take a breather.
I was #60's biggest fan tonight.
That last rush to get the first down epitomized the entire effort of the game by the Panthers.
I said in an earlier post that a loss at the hands of the Panthers may be a mixed blessing for the Highlanders. I don't think it's mixed anymore. TWHS, though it was a real tough loss, considering this core group has never lost, may go on to do great things in the playoffs. The loss is behind, leave it there, learn and move forward.
I think the single biggest motivating factor was Outlaw's neck tie. Gold with purple pinstripes that hung 4 inches below his belt.:D Pretty ironic that the Panthers take the Woodlands Express:D
One of the hardest played games I've seen in a long while from any two teams. This is exactly what Lufkin has been capable of all year long when they leave the major mistakes on the practice field. So many LP loses this year have been at the hands of themselves. Tonight was a great effort in minimizing the mistakes and it paid off. Still a long way from perfect, but so much better than previous efforts. I had not seen the Woodz play this year but I don't think they were expecting the PACK team that showed up today. A lot of pride on the field tonight. Now maybe they can keep it together and really get rolling. It's time!
Yes i is ironic about the buses. We use Coach America every road game and this was pretty normal. Sometimes we get CA buses, but today they sent Woodlands Express which is owned by Coach America. Usually it is a mix, but it was ironic that all 8 of 10 buses were WE's today.

Not that TreVon was down but his forward progress was stopped, but the better team won tonight. The Panthers front 7 owned the game. 1 Busted play led to the Highlander TD lets not forget that. IS was a great game. The Lufkin offense did enough. Lewis should be player of the game. Claybon didnt make the killer mistake, and the defense has did what is has done all season. Take into consideration Lufkin played this game without 4 starters on defense. The Woodlands defense was technically the most sound we have faced this season very good, but not nearly as dynamic and fast as Northshore defense. Lasco(17-57) never got going his better runs came on the direct snap that usally netted him 5 yards at best. Give major props to TWHS QB he took some shots. Dont have the exact #'s. but I would venture to say LP got to him 5-6 times for sacks. However draws The Woodlands are going to have their hands full.

Great game! Well played, clean, hard-fought and really good atmosphere. I thought Lufkin represented well given the game day/time/location. A marching band that actually plays marching music, novel concept and well done. Lufkin's front 3 were dominating and the difference in the game. Claybon started out living up to his reputation of making poor decisions but he settled down after the 1st and played a very smart game. You can tell the way he patiently worked the play clock at the end that he's been there before. Woodland's O has been out of sync bigtime since Knust has been injured the past 2.5 games. He's the missing link IMO.

What's with the orchestra pit at halftime?
i still want to know why the Woodlands Marching Band has instuments that Rylan Reed and Larry Allen couldn't march with?
If you can't carry it, it doesn't belong in a band presentation...
Thought Lufkin's D played an outstanding game.
Great penetration by the DL.
Outstsanding coverage tecnique by the DBs
I could instantly see the dropoff from the LBs of years' past, but they still played well on saturday.
If Lufkin's QB could pass the ball instead of just chunking it, the Pack would be a whole different team. This was glaringly obvious. claybon should have played 20 years ago when everyone ran the bone or the veer, and he would be adequate.
I do not understand how you can expect the spread to work without the threat of the pass. the only threat was the sheer speed of the Lufkin Wrs and the slight chance that a ball would be on target.
The two early INTs were both unneccessary throws. If not for the stellar play of the LP defense, the Pack could have been in a deep, deep hole from the beginning. That being said, it is absolutely a team game.
I also thought the Lufkin OL and RBs played the game the way you should. they flat out got after it.
I hope the Pack is on track.

Had to sleep on this game before making any comments...plus I had to watch my Red Raiders pull off the game of the year against a stout UT team.
But on the TWHS v. Lufkin game:
Lufkin players and coaches - congratulations on a very well played, well earned and deserved victory. Classy game with intensity and you brought your A game to The Shed.
Excuses? None. Lufkin's D front was the difference. Period.
Our game plan in the first half did not include the deep route...without stretching the field vertically, Lufkin's front had a field day in our backfield. The Woodies opened up the passing game in the 2nd half, and it's good they did...they had -17 yards rushing in the half. The Woodlands coaches went away from their strength, going up top, the entire first half. They could have adjusted earlier, but didn't.
Fields goals missed by both teams. Officiating was average at best but not a factor.
The 26 yard run by Tre'Von Lewis to keep possession and finish the game was as big a run as I have seen in high school, maybe any level...good job, kid!
Excellent jobs by Rob Irvin and Ryan Eastman, Matt Pettite receiving the ball.
Two good football teams, good intensity, clean play...one wins, one loses...and yesterday's better team won.
Rankings don't mean Jack...ask Lufkin!
Lufkin is a classy program...fans are great, kids play clean and hard. It's what Texas high school football should be. I feel the same way about TWHS.
Good luck Pack. Woodies...one loss is just that, one loss. And it's history. Tell me one champion that never had a defeat?

Congratulations to Lufkin. Agree with The Wood on this one. There were a couple of incredible catches by Eastman and Irvin. A few additional comments: Woodlands D kept the game close. Quinn Trimble was kept out of the end zone and only had 68 yards receiving. If he wasn't kept in check, it could have gotten ugly. The play calling has been very good all year, however, I didn't understand it in this game. Better to have a game like this now than in the playoffs. The Woodlands is still one of the top teams in the state.

Questions to the TWHS fans.
Could a better job have been done making in game adjustments tonight?
Should Eastman have come in maybe just after halftime to play QB.?
Should Art Arias have been utilized to give the running game a different look?
Have they totally abandoned the pro set or can they still go to it if the Spread is ineffective like it was tonight?
no to all questions but making adjustments --there were NO adjustments made by TWH

agree with most of what you say -- but another angle -- dont want to single out a single player -- but did we a different center ?? the missed FG was bad snap -- there were at least 4 or 5 times TWH QB had to jump up to catch the snap which throws off the timing of the quick passes & slows him down just enough for the rush to get to him havent seen that all year
but NO EXCUSES --- Lufkin & their coach beat us -- no 2 ways about it --- they deserve the win

Totally disagree with the underlined part of this post, RBAR.
The game plan basically took TWHS out in the first half. You gotta stretch a D like Lufkins, and basically our coaches played like we couldn't go vertical on them. In fact, we can and did, when Andy wasn't throwing from his back.
You don't give up 276 or so yards to Lufkin by not playing intense. The Woodie D played fine. Offensively, there were some miscues, but no more than the next high school team, many of whom won games this weekend. We just played like we were the underdog on offense. I kinda feel like we brought a pretty girl to the dance and let her sit against the wall all night. Yeah, they were gonna blitz us, yeah we would get sacked. Yeah there were missed opps downfield, but not until 2nd half...when you had to go deeper. We surely missed Randy Knust, but coulda used what we had more effectively. Intensity? Did you see the catches that eastman and Irvin made? That was focus and desire by those fellas.
We could have done a much better job in half one, but coaches didn't want to test their dbs, and that's exactly what they shoulda done, IMO.
But the Lufkin front seven D won the game. And nice cutback runs hurt us too. And, not that it mattered much at the time, other than to drive the win home, but the last run by Lewis was Highlight Reel Central.
WE DID NOT GIVE IT TO THEM. They took it.

Do you really think TWHS chanted overrated? I'm pretty sure that TW, from day one, respected the potential threat of Lufkin. There may be some people from outside The Woodlands that had some negative thoughts about Lufkin but you should probably go back through the threads just to be sure.

TigerBrother is referring to the Woodlands chanting overrated at the Katy game... it was hard to hear, but was absolutely right. Teams can have off nights, and a team fielded by a program like Lufkin can never be overlooked- when they come to play the will beat anyone. This one loss certainly does not define The Highlanders's season and does not prove them overrated, in any sense of the word.
The fans will have their fun. It's up to the team to live up to expectations. I'm sure they haven't let anyone down yet. :)

Boy did your Tigers turn it around fast. I actually remeber a few fans conceeding the district to Cinco Ranch when Katy was 0-2. As long as a team can stop the run they will bery very competetive and Katy can stop the run.

Really! I think it ceased being a football game after about 42 - 0. It's may have been hard to hear over that obnoxious band playing all the time! :D

We've still got a loooong way to go. We can take another big step forward with a win this week. I really hope the Panthers's win over the Woodlands helps them really kick it into gear for the playoffs.

I can only assume that would be coming from the student section, which I sit in the next section over, and I didn't hear that. Not saying it didn't happen (and I wouldn't put much past teens because I'm a grumpy old man) but I definitely didn't hear it.

I agree it would be from the student section. I don't remember it being prolonged, but hearing it and knowing it's a bit true rubs it in a little more. :o Still, it's what the kids will do and I don't think many of us in Katy hold any grudges.
I'm anticipating the Cinco fans to do it this weekend... even though everyone (but this site) has them ahead of us. They're pretty dumb . :D

I was there and did not hear it. Of course, I am a grumpier old man than teXan. Alice will say something and I never hear it.:) That being said, the game is over, Lufkin won fair and square, it is time to move on to another thread.

I hope so. The Woodlands was a big win, and it didn't come easy thats for sure. I look at Region 2 and it is wide open in in Division 2 and I think our boys have a legit chance to make a serious run if they come to play 4 quarters. I figure Ablene is the slight favorite but on a neatrul field I like our chances versus anybody the ay we are playing right now.
I also checked out what Katy may face and one thing for sure never count the Tigers out. Goodluck against Cinco Ranch I am actually predicting a Katy win by atleast 10.
