Booster Club Update 11/29/10:
> Coach was proud of effort against SLC, just couldn't get the 3 or 4 plays that would have made a difference in the outcome of the game
> Proud of kids for the season
> Ronnell has heart of a champion playing in his condition. Also proud of Kittley for his effort.
> Thinks Guyer and Longview will play in Semi-final with Guyer winning it all
> Thankful for the fan support both Saturday and all during the year
> Spring training starts now
> Three D1 offers (1, 23, 18) currently, D2 & 3 schools will start recruiting now
> All district teams should be out very soon. Eagles were well represented including district MVP's
> 2011 Non-district games: El Paso Hanks, Longview, and possibly ET . No mention of FL trip
> No mention of Angelo State offer
That's all of the updates for 2010 folks. See ya next year.

Congrats Abilene Eagles.... one of the classiest programs in this state..... be proud & be thankful..... you fans demonstrate the finest in loyalty simply in the numbers you bring every year in support of your kids..... that "sea of gold" says a ton about Abilene...... after 4 contests, its evident your kids are good because there are outstanding role models supporting them.
Keep working hard Abilene Eagles and we'll see you again next Thanksgiving
Last word..... don't count out this group of Dragons just yet..... they shall be the underdog again this week, but there's something about this group's character.

What's an El Paso Hanks?
Hope the battle against Longview is more out west; how far was Plano for the Lobos anyways?
Trinity? Good! Bring it on! Never back down for the ranked best if you want to get there.

This year Hanks was a 3-7 team in a weak district so not much.
LV game will be in Western Ft Worth/Aledo area which would work out pretty good:
LV to Plano = 140 LV to Aledo = 180
Abi to Plano = 200 Abi to Aledo = 135

In my nothing to do during the offseason I watched the Abilene vs. Cocoa game. In my observation of Thaxton Grayer( I think thats his name) I dont think yall will be hurting at RB this season. He made a couple of runs that blew my mind as to how low he was when making his cuts. Also say the name Shaq Sims and wanted to know if he was related to Herschel and Ronnel. Good luck to you guys this season.

Close. Paxton Grayer. He played alot of cornerback during the second half of the season out of necessity, but will be a featured running back during this season as a senior. Additional, Marcell Porter will be the other running back and he's probably even faster and more rugged. Yes, Shaq Sims is related; he's Ronnel's brother and a senior this year.

Pax and Porter should be a pretty good tandem this year I'm thinking. I'm really interested in the QB situation with Kittley and Abbe duking it out. That may be a good problem to have especially if one gets banged up.

Okay folks, here we go for 2011..!! Not a whole lot of info but it's a start.
Booster Club Update 08/22/11:
> Coach thought effort was good for CCove scrimmage. Played well on both sides of ball. No injuries
> JV goes to Belton this week
> 90 Freshman kids playing which Coach was glad to see
> Coach is doing a weekly radio show which airs Tuesday at 6:30 on 92.5 FM and Wednesday at 6:30 on 1280am
> New Athletics website http://www.ahseaglessports.mobi/
> Will play allot of kids against Hanks to determine starters
> Hanks will throw allot (80%) and will play kids on both sides of ball, have a good RB (Powell)
> Team strengths: Team speed (WR, RB, Def, OL), 0 losses on Fresh/JV teams (i.e. they know how to win)
> Weaknesses: Line size, lack of returning starters
> Predicted that Pax would have a good year but look out for Porter too

Good stuff! I think calling size a weakness is laughable, we're always smaller than everyone. We don't return many starters or guys that played significantly from last year, but we do return a hand full on the offensive line, so I expect that group to take a huge step forward. Has a starting QB been named out of Kittley or Abbe? From the limited time I saw those guys play on the varsity last year, I was very impressed with both. Abbe was bigger and physical enough that he looked like he might could play some defense if he doesn't get the nod at QB. I'll miss almost every game this season:(, so I'll be relying on the game threads to keep me updated.

I think the word is that they will share snaps until one separates himself as the clear cut starter? I too agree that if the Abbe kid doesn't win the starting QB job I would love to see him moved to LB, he's a big kid that could dish out some punishment that's for certain. Saw Chantz Anderson this past weekend, that kid has been working his arse off and it shows, he looked like a small house:eek:

I hope they get the QB situation worked out quickly, I'm not a fan of splitting snaps. QBs need to get in a rhythm and that's hard to do when you're only getting half of the snaps. I imagine last year's lofty expectations and the disappointing loss in the third round was pretty good motivation for the summer work outs.

Man is it great to be back to football time. Everything just seems better when we finally have some meaningful football to talk about. It even makes these miserable temperatures and drought conditions somewhat more tolerable.
Anyway, this Eagle team is an extremely talented but very young bunch. This could very well end up being another 2006 type year where they lose a few early and make a nice run in the playoffs for some good experience that will help them fight for a state title next year.
There are two things that concern me a little bit...1) the rotating of QBs and 2) the secondary.
First the QBs, I have heard that there is a clear cut leader here, but there is some pressure being placed on certain people by certain people because one of them thinks they are/were the heir apparent to the job. (I am trying to be extremely vague on purpose). I hope this is long figured out before District starts and we have the best leader playing QB when the real season starts.
Second the secondary, I am mainly concerned because of the size and youth of this group. I think that, like QB, experience plays a huge role in the secondary positions. A good offensive coordinator can really make an inexperienced secondary look bad, so they are going to have to do some really hard and fast "on the job" training. Speed will make up for a few mistakes but getting out of position too much will kill you.
I think this pre-district schedule is a good place to start with these boys, it will make them grow up fast and show them exactly where they need to work harder. If they walk out of it with a 3-2 record I would feel great, it is more likely they only get 1-2 wins though. As long as they get stuff worked out for that first district game though the pre-district means squat.
Just my 2 cents.
Let's have a great year Eagles!

Too bad on the QB situation as I've heard the same thing but there is no such thing as heir apparent. That is a perception that parents have but we all know that position is up for grabs until somebody takes it...then they have to keep it..!!
I think you're right on non-district. Coming out with a 3-2 record but truly be remarkable but 2-3 is probably more likely. I just don't see us beating ET or Longview this year.
Definitely need to play catch up on the safety and corners. Lost allot of experience with Brooks, Gibby and Darius moving on.

Definitely the underdogs against Trinity and Longview. Whatever the record at the end of pre-district, most important things are to be set on the QB, to be a much improved team overall than right now, and get out of it without significant injuries.

77-13 over El Paso Hanks
Great way to start the season! So folks who were there, tell me about it. I got some text updates and Paxton had a killer game, but how was Porter, Abbe, and Walker looking? Defense sounds like they were very salty and had a blocked punt. How'd the O line look? Working better as a unit this year? I understand it's hard to get a real feel for how good this team is/can be when playing teams that aren't the caliber of what we've got coming next week (Trinity), but beating a team that you're supposed to like that is always a good sign.

Pax and Porter looked good. That is just a hell of allot of speed in the backfield..!! Thought Abbe had a really good game, had some good reads, made some good throws and had some good runs. Walker stepped in and had a really nice bootleg TD run. OLine looked good but I'm not sure how good a test this was this week. RB's had some really nice holes but I was not at all impressed with this Hanks team. Dline had moments of brillance but with the 3 man rush didnt put any pressure on Hanks QB. Secondary gave up 2 long TD's but 1 was 2nd/3rd string D.
All in all a very good game and I'm sure coaches are pleased but will definitely be working on a few things for next week.

Hey Folks! Had problemsgetting back on the site this season. Had to create a new account....old one was eaglefan87. I could not remember my password and when I tried to have it reset the site did not recognize my email. Not sure what happened there but it is good to be back on and really good to have the HS football season underway.
Really looking forward to seeing what we have this year. Really hard to use that EP game as a true barometer of where we r now. EP Hanks was just horrible.....on par with FW Paschal. They did have a few good athletes but just a bad team.
Looking forward to the ET game....we'll really get to see how these young guys respond when playing a team with alot of superior athletes and a winning tradition behind them.

Welcome back 87!! Hanks definitely had a couple of players with talent but not much else...special teams play were some of the worst I've ever seen. ET will definitely be a test for this young team. Hopefully Warren et company will get them prepared.

Booster Club Update 08/29/11:
> Nice win Friday and saw great effort from starters down to 3rd string. Got allot of kids in the game.
> Minor injuries, none significant
> Pleased with Abbe, Walker, Grayer, Porter, Lucas at skill positions
> Freshman team looking very good
> Radio show which airs Tuesday at 6:30 on 92.5 FM and Wednesday at 6:30 on 1280am
> ET will be very tough test for this young group but kids are excited to get the opporutnity
> Hope to offset size disadvantage with speed and technique but ET is very well coached too
> First meeting between Warren and Lineweaver but they've been talking about it for several years
> No surprise but ET will line up and run the ball, re-loaded talent from Brandon Carter and others leaving.
> Brian Nance one of the best LB's in the state
> Key for defense is to "be gone by the time they show up to block you"

Alrighty, what's the postgame analysis for the Eagles? I'm pleased to see that our boys kept fighting until the very end, though there were mistakes that came from youth...from what I've been able to tell, come playoffs our squad could be quite dangerous indeed.

Thought our boys showed alot of heart against a more talented team last night. Had our chances but couldnt capitalize on them. Our own mistakes and a good ET defense stopped us on those 3 posessions at the end of the 1st half.
We showed we have a good base to build on.....give the coaches a chance to coach these boys and we r going to have a really good team.

We are a very green team and last night it showed badly. Silly mistakes that will come to pass with some maturation of these young Eagles. I thought the O-line did a fantastic job of giving Abbe ample time and opening up holes for Marcel and Pax. Glad the boys got to face some adversity at the beginning of the season, this is an excellent learning experience for them. Abbe made some great plays, there were times when he tried to force it. Several times he had the first down if he had tucked and ran, but instead he tried to buy time and find an open receiver. Against a lesser opponent he probably would have found a receiver. Several drops by the WR's were disappointing. We got virtually no penetration into the Trinity backfield, it was ugly. I think this game helped us immensely and showed our boys they have plenty to work on.

I agree. He did make some good plays but his youth showed. There were plays like u mentioned where he should have tucked it and ran instead of looking to throw. There were also times when he had receivers open but held onto the ball too long and allowed the dback to get back in coverage or he tried too run the ball. I think with some good coaching and just more experience he will be pretty good.

> Nice win Saturday and saw great effort in all 3 phases of the game.
> Pleased with continued improvement but still along way to go where he wants them to be
> Minor injuries, none significant
> High praise for defense with the shutout - Allot of pursuit to the ball
> Receivers were incredible...Walker's catch in the endzone was one of the best he's ever seen. Good catches from Zeller, Alexander, Lucas & McGary
> Problem with field goal kicking...Peables hit all extra points but missed the 1 FG attempt Saturday. Need to improve
> Pax and Porter continue to run ball very well and OL is doing good job
> This upcoming game is a big deal to Harlingen and they will be bringing the house so Eagles need to step up and go to the game
> Eagles will match up size wise with the Cardinals but they have allot of team speed also
> Cards have a good running quarterback and a good RB
> Cards typically go 3 deep in the playoffs so they are the best team in RGV

One person asked about Herschel, noticing he was on the sidelines, and if him and Coach had any chat about the rough week he had at OSU. Coach said after Saturday's game that HS was counselled sternly but supportively about the lesson learned when it comes to the media, D1 spotlight, and mass communication. Great to hear Herschel taking in the game alongside Pax and the players since there was no OSU commitments that day. Personally I didn't realize he had an opportunity to get some snaps during the OSU game and I didn't see him at our game. Coach said he's going to be used this week in Stillwater as the part of the 2d and 3d team getting the starters and immediate backups ready for the next game, instead of practicing on the side and not getting much action.

I heard on Al Picket's program a few weeks ago that Herschel was nursing a break in his ankle and that was the reason he hasn't seen any playing time as of yet. I presume that he has recovered from that? Picket said even with the injury there were still no plans to place a red shirt on him and that they were hopeful he would return kicks in week 4-5.

Now that you meantioned it, I recall Coach saying HS's frustration was alot to do with him working hard on the recovery and being ready but not being played/rewarded for his efforts. Therefore, playing on the 2nd and 3rd strings in practice this week is a good sign.

Coach Martin came down to the A&M SMU game with my roommate's dad, and he said Ronnell was still recovering from a staff infection in the offseason. Darius was suited up, but was likely going to redshirt barring any injuries. I'd be surprised if either saw action this year.

MSRA is a very scary deal. Ronnell was actually hospitalized at one point and there was fear that his entire arm may have to be amputated. Thank God he was able to fight and I believe he is in the clear now. Darius did well in summer workouts and I would expect him to contribute quite a bit next fall.

> Tough loss Saturday but proud of the effort the kids put into it.
> Record at 2-2 but 4 plays from being 4-0 but that's not important. What matters is when district opens against Odessa
> Harlingen is a good, well coached team
> Harlingen put the ball on the ground 6 times and didn't come up with any of those, need to work on that
> Comment on 2 point conversion.."When you have to go 1 yard to win a ball game I'll do it everytime. I believe in our kids and have allot of confidence in them."
> Ran that same play 5 times that night and got good yardage every time, just didn't execute it
> Also said that 3 defensive starters were done for the night which played into the decision... if it went to 3rd OT then you have to go for 2
> Some injuries on defensive side, could have some starters out Saturday
> Glad to get first field goal of the year
> Longview team is allot like last years team. Key will be stop power run attack

This biggest points imo. That's how Harlingen got two additional turnovers compared to ours (4-2), even though they were flagged twice as often, and of course once was on the 1 yard line a half second from a TD. We come out with even turnovers, e.g. two of those six failed fumble recoveries, the end result changes. It was revealing to learn how banged up the three defenders were. We saw and knew they were struggling, but did not realize they would not have been able to respond to a 3rd OT. Plus a 3rd OT would be going for two points after a TD mandatory at 3 yards out, vice the easier chance after the penalty. Lastly, I hope they do not play the three starters on defense against Longview. Coach said one was definitely getting rested and two maybe. District > now.

> Defense played well just not consistent...gave up the big play.
> Jake McMillon played his best game yet...not bad for a Soph
> Pretty banged up overall so need this bye week to heal, at least 1 OL starter will miss Odessa game
> We're all 0-0 so now it counts
> Areas for improvement...continued consitency on both sides of the ball
> Discipline is there due to lack of penalites, just need more consistency
> Nothing really shared on Odessa
> Enrollment numbers are close to 2,200 which SHOULD keep AHS at 5A, doesn't expect any surprises come February.

I can't help but be reminded of the '06 squad by this group. The difference being that this squad is younger and still more talented. Remember, the '06 Eagles lost the first four games of the season by wide margins only to pull out a squeaker against Denton Ryan in week 4. We entered district 1-4 if y'all don't remember. We had mediocre wins against Midland High and Lee--the district was down overall--before upsetting Permian in Ratliff in one of the better games the district saw in the past decade (down 21-7 at half, came back to score with less than 30 seconds left after a 9:00 drive and controversial QB keeper to convert 4th down to take the lead). We were clicking at that point and gave a much more talented DeSoto squad a run for their money in the third round.
The scary part is that these young, undersized Eagles are playing better than we were against tougher competition (excepting, perhaps, Austin Westlake, who went to the finals against SLC), and we were, on average, an older squad.
The off week will help and I'm glad to hear the staff is keeping some of the injured guys out of the first district battle. By the time the playoffs come around, don't be surprised if we make it to the quarterfinals. Hell, maybe deeper.
This group has nearly unlimited potential. The chemistry next year, what with this group getting another year of off season under their belts, will be incredible.

He was one of the guys whom I wasn't sure would be playing against Longview because I noticed how much the physical toll was during the double-OT Harlingen game. I saw during the fourth quarter and OT's how badly he wanted to keep going but absolutely had to get an occasional substitution. In fact, I was pleased to see all three kids on defense whom we were concerned about being too banged up before Longview game was more caution than reality.
Growing up with four older sisters...yup, that'd force me to be tough also!

I have to disagree with some of that grading. Fumbles and thrown interceptions from the O and A's and B's are given? How many times were we in a position to score and didn't? Many fumble recoveries and interceptions by D and secondary and they get the worst grade.... I'm sure the last week has brought alot of change so D will just have to prove themselves during district play.

As much as it has sputterred at times, our O is very good and deserving of that grade. The grade on the D was spot on, giving up WAY too many yards and points right now. Don't recall Harlingen ever punting and I think Longview only punted once? That's not good defense.

Stud, I understand what you are saying however, IMO not that it matters because I really don't know ALOT about football.... I think the grades that were given for the entire offense were a little high considering all the opportunities missed. I'm not making excuses for the D but let's not forget how much they had to be out there because of mistakes made by the O. Believe me, when my boy doesn't do his job out there.... he not only hears it from coach but he hears it from us at home. EagleMom, just a few stats to backup Waller and Stud's position.
All Games EP&BTW ET,H,LV
Total offense yds avg 451 509 412
Total points avg 43 63 30
Total Defense yds avg 342 191 443
Total def points avg 26.8 10.0 38
The point being the offense, though they have had some untimely miscues and mistakes in the 3 losses, have been more consistent than the defense overall. The defense played very well against the weaker teams but against prime competition gave up 443 yds/p/g and 38 p/p/g. You are right that defense wins championships and to make a good playoff run we need much better numbers from our Blackshirts. Having said all that, I think we are positioned well going into district play.

I think the offense grade is a little high, not because of points and yards production, but because of turnovers. We didn't commit these turnovers the past three seasons that I've been back in state after retirement, attending most of our varsity games. On the other hand, our defense also played better but was still always suceptible to a good passing game. Aside from making field goals, our special teams is improved over the last three seasons with overall punts and kickoff returns and coverages. Of course, Herschel was barely had shots to return kicks since they all knew how dangerous he was; his average was definitely way higher. We are so used to seeing better from our players and they are used to doing better themselves as well. They believe and we believe they shall.

And we all know about opinions. :D I have seen 3 of the 5 games this year (including 2 of the 3 losses) which is not normal for me - I usually see all the games. I have been watching Eagle teams since the 1970s so I know a little about the good and the bad. I am an ardent fan who has no current ties to the current team and I think of myself as being objective.
Here is my grade of the different units sans the commentary:
Quarterback:Grade: B+
Running back: Grade: A-
Wide receiver: Grade: B
Offensive line: Grade: B- (but I am really proud of the big eaters)
Defensive line: Grade: B-
Linebacker: Grade: B-
Secondary: Grade: C (the stats tell the tale)
Special teams: Grade: B+.
Overall: Grade: B-
The O line is the linchpin for any offense. I think this bunch is out-performing what most of us expected up to this point. There is room for improvement and I think they will continue to get better. JMHO.

@Shoot... I got a chuckle out of your comment of having no current ties to the team :D. You have been a fan way longer than my family. We've been fans since 2000 when we moved here from the Mid-West. Some of us "D" moms were irritated over the article/grades but we're over it (kinda sorta) and yes we take it personally because those are our boys who work their butts off out there. I don't even want to know what it feels like to get knocked on my booty as hard as they do game after game. I agree, I'm most certain there have been adjustments and improvements will be seen. Looking forward to Friday in Odessa! GOOOOOooooo EAGLESSSSSssssss!:heli:

This is just my observation mom. We have been spoiled the last few years at AHS when it comes to the defensive side of the ball. We have been blessed with some downright nasty defenses a few years.... this includes 2 years where we had the Associated Press defensive player of the year in Texas 5A ball on our defense. Coach Fullen does a great job each year and we are blessed to have him. Other Eagle teams have set the bar high so it is hard to measure up at times. These guys are getting better - I have noticed real improvement each game. They will be fine. I really believe we can run the table in district. ;)

This Cooper team is a shell of last year's. Little to no ground game and their defense has 2 really good players and 9 that wouldn't be playing for AHS. We can take 'em but it will be close only because of the crosstown rivalry. The best thing about the Cooper game is I always already have tickets being a longtime season ticket holder. :heli:

They still have a good passing game, which is what makes them dangerous to our team, plus the cross-town rivalry of course.

I hear what you are saying Warbird and I agree that talent wise across the board, they are the biggest challenge. What helps us in this matchup is that we have owned the Bulldogs in the Steve Warren era. I am not sure if coach Yenzer has ever won against Warren. That gets into your head. They have had the better talent before and didn't deliver. It also helps tremendously that this game is at Shotwell. We have a tremendous record there in the Warren era. I think we take this one in the 7-10 point range. JMHO.

They had no defense last year, but somehow they magically showed up against us. We also haven't fared too well against decent passing teams, and Clayton Nicholas is just a wee bit above decent....this game won't be a cakewalk.

Midland and Cooper will both be tough games IMO. I watched Cooper dismantle a very weak Lubbock High team but their execution and discipline were good. Nicholas is very dangerous when given plenty of time and though their ground game has taken a hit they still have some good backs. I think AHS wins both of these games but they could be nail biters...

That's what I saw Guyer do in the playoffs last year, and Central this year; he hasn't handled well a strong pass rush.

I'm off work today, and for the first time in forever I don't have a list a mile long of things to do. I snagged most of these stats from gofridaynight.com, they've done a much better job of keeping complete stats this year as opposed to years past.
In every game this season with the exception of Longview, our defense has come out in the 2nd half and given up less points and less yards than the first half.
El Paso 1st half-6 2nd half-0 against starters, 7 against backups.
Trinity 1st half-21 2nd half-13
Booker T 1st half-0 2nd half-0
Harlingen 1st half-22 2nd half-16
Longview 1st half-14 2nd half-21
OHS 1st half-0 2nd half-0 against starters, 20 against 2nd&3rd team D.
Offensive production by half
El Paso 1st half-35 2nd half-42
Trinity 1st half-7 2nd half-10
Booker T 1st half-28 2nd half-21
Harlingen 1st half-24 2nd half-14
Longview 1st half-21 2nd half-7
OHS 1st half-35 2nd half-28
The Harlingen and LV games our offense sputtered and didn't keep up the pace they set in the first half. Coincidentally, we lost both of those games. This years squad reminds alot of 2006, except they might have even more upside than that team. I remember beating a far superior Permian team AT Ratliff that year on a 9+ minute drive. I think this is what it is going to take for us to make some noise into December. Pax and Marcell have what it takes to be the workhorses for grinding the clock down, but we need the defense to step up and make one or two more stops in the game and we're sitting at 5-1 instead of 3-3. I don't like losing, but I find it encouraging that our guys are right there, and that those little things will start going our way as they grow with each game.
Abbe 95-149 1221 yards 11-td 3-int. 64%
Pax 100 carries -700 yards 11-td. 7.0avg
Marcell 59 carries - 609 yards 8-td. 10.3 avg
Four receivers with 150+ yards receiving. I can't recall us having more than 2 decent targets at WR in a while, now we have more than double that.
Keevan Lucas- 29-422 2-td
Tyler McGary- 18-274 1-td
Blayze Walker- 15-179 3-td
Grant Alexander- 11-151 1-td

Booster Club Update 10/10/11:
> Good solid win on Friday with good execution
> "The team maintained the speed of the game from the previous 4 weeks". i.e. played at a level that equaled going against Longview, Harlingen, ET, etc..
> All sub-varsity teams won last week over Odessa and San Angelo
> Some minor injuries still but could get OL back together this week.
> 4th kicker of the year used this year against OHS. Obvioulsly an area that Coach is concerned with. #19 has some nagging leg injuries and #13 was bothered on Friday as well.
> Used Porter as 2nd string QB to get some Dirty Bird practice in and rest #13
> Midland Lee has 2 monstrous defensive lineman (360 lb avg)and overall very good D.
> Lee will run the ball quite a bit
> Throwback jerseys will be offered at silent auction at game this week for Homecoming. Starting bid is $75

I noticed Cooper has Under Armor to sponsor there uniforms, I know it really does not matter, but you would think with us kind of being the elite team of the city the past decade we should have the big name companies(Nike, under armor,etc..) sponsoring us. Is this a school decision or school district district's decision that decides those who sponsors the unis?

Thanks for the update Warbird Dad.
Was very happy to see the Eagle D come out and use press coverage on the wide outs last Friday, it has been a long long time since they have done that.
The lack of defensive pressure is a concern going forward, even the blitzers are not getting to the QB quick enough. The stunts and scheme need to be revamped to allow those guys to get there sooner.
O-line isn't opening up the whole in the run game as they were earlier in the season. I understand there are injuries but I am a little concerned there. Abbe is also taking way too many free shots when he drops back.
Great to see the made FG, #19 looks to be a good enough kicker to hit one from 35 and in no problem. Anything more than that and it is a question.
This weeks game is going to be close.

I've only seen highlights, but yeah, that's how he strikes me too. He's not as fast or as shifty as Spens, but he's just about got Potts's arm. Impressive player and a real asset for the Eagles. It's been a while since we've really had as multifaceted an offense as this (home run threat running game, home run threats out wide with an arm to get the ball downfield) and he's a big part of that.

Either way, I would be happy if they leveled that dump and we never went to Waco ever, ever again. I was there on the front row that night when SLC went up 14-0 before our offense ever touched the field. I was there when we went into conservative kill clock mode and it damn near cost us a state title. I HATE that place, the town ain't exactly my favorite either.

That would be terrible. To break up the LSWC again to send Abilene teams to FW and send Midland and Odessa to the 10 team mash of teams up north....plus San Angelo Central for football only....is plain idiotic. But hey we r talking about the UIL here. We could look at the bright side tho....that group of weak sisters we played with for 2 years set us up for a couple great years. Nah.....it would suck! We love playing in the LSWC!!!

I really don't want to go back to a metromess district. They don't have the following or the passionate fanbases that our current district foes have, which makes it a much more exciting game. It's no fun going to Burleson and their band makes up 75% of their fans in the stands. I also enjoy the history involved with the littleswc. I'd prefer we stay intact with the permian basin folks and I'd even take SA Central back, those guys were always good for one crazy upset win every year.

(if this happens) Seems like we get penalized for the lack of enrollment in others. Last time Cooper, this time Lubbock/Amarillo.

That doesn't make any sense to me at all, seems to me Lamar owes us a trip, but at least it's the clear cut best stadium in the state.
I learned last night that Lamar does not owe us a trip; our last game against them was a neutral site.

I didn't go to a luncheon during district play, but went to his last one after all district was done and preparing for playoffs.
1. Coach Warren praised how well our players came back from the big emotional Cooper game.
2. Talked about how winning the Championship outright meant alot to the players and the district Bell back in town.
3. Expects to have the Bell at the Field House soon and the one at the game that's pulled behind a pickup.
4. Expecting return of starting O Lineman whom has been nursing a sprain for the last few weeks.
5. Still not sure about the one starter in secondary who's been recovering all month from concussion.
6. Outside of those two players, all else is typical bumps and bruises of a tough season. Overall healthy team.
7. Praised JV Black team's undefeated season, said Varsity playoffs help both improve each other in practice sessions.
8. Talked about last year's Arlington game, said this year they're as talented as others back East we played this year.
9. Gave us Arlington's impressive passing and rushing stats, and # of returning starters.
10. Excited to be hosting this playoff game at Shotwell and having the home crowd/field advantage.

And that he hoped as much as the rest of the club that we stay west, even with an annual trip to amarillo or lubbock, rather than going east, and told us that we've been in a ten team district during his time before.
Personal note, I bet he'll be pleased not to have to find as many nondistrict games to fill the season.
edit: I looked at past 3 decades and I don't see us in 10 team districts; so I'm pretty sure I just misheard him saying there are or have been 10 team districts.

It most definitely did, plus forced them to learn and improve both mentally and physically. If we have 8 others in the district, we can still keep our near-annual game against Longview plus schedule another tough one. We won't need the scab games like EP Hanks and a disappointing out of state team to fill the schedule. If we wind up out in the FW district again, we'll need more non-district games against more different tough opponents because, frankly, the high school football competition in that FW district really stinks.

Been talking about the booster club luncheon in several threads but just noticed no update here, so let's give it a shot:
Monday, 14 NOV
1. Very proud of the grit and determination of our players, Arlington as tough as expected and a needed, good test.
2. We won because our guys made the plays. Very proud many of ours want to be the one making the play, plus do it.
3. High Praise to the Arlington RB, heard he took Utah offer. Pax has had 3 D2 offers and getting some D1 interests.
4. Shared overhearing two Colts saying to each other they were amazed they got beat by "those little guys".
5. Two of their seniors stuck around after the game to visit McMurry University; might get offers to play there.
6. Officiating crew was the same one from San Antonio that worked our game against Harlingen.
7. Great job by our OLine and our Center especially for reading defensive sets, changes, and making their blocks.
8. Their focus on Paxon opened it up for Marcell, then Pax got his when they adjusted, then both had success.
9. Didn't pass downfield because the Colts passing defense was focused to prevent the deep ball; flats were open.
10. High praise for our "down 3" DLINE keeping their five OLINE busy, allowing LB's to consistently blitz and pressure.
11. All LB's did great job waiting for play to develop and reacting to ball carrier, making stops at or behind scrimmage.
12. We called the timeout during FG setup due to a personell mixup, then decided to try for the 1st down.
13. Our blackshirts did very well in continuing to swarm to the ball; that turnover we got doesn't happen otherwise.
14. Conlan's coverage against his much taller receiver was outstanding; they only tested him once and he aced it.
15. A starter returns in our secondary who's been out awhile; big boost against heavily passing EPM who 5-wide alot.
16. One guy each on offense and defensegot banged up which may or may not keep them out; game time decisions.
17. EPM is about our size which is very unusual and pretty quick too; two speedy receivers and one is pretty tall.
18. Yes, same coach of Del Valle '01 who won, & EPM '04 that caused a few leg injuries by very questionable actions.
19. Game film from EPM this year doesn't show any of this against foes so far; coaches (& players?) are very aware.
20. Officiating crew agreed upon by both coaches for this game will be from the Permian Basin chapter.
Anything else who may have been there want to add in there something important that I missed? Don't recognize any other attendees to their forum names, and I doubt you recognize me. I've only met #9EagleMom and DurtyBird; all you other men are paranoid :p

Booster Luncheon, 21 NOV
1. Coach Warren gave credit to EP Montwood and Coach Veliz for their game plan and execution; his players were ready.
2. Rams defensive formations causes us initial troubles because it was totallyy different than scouting and practice.
3. It took awhile to adjust to their defense due to barely have the ball for two dozen snaps the entire half.
4. EPM's ball control offense via short passing game was expected; our usual 3-4 man rush not getting the smart QB.
5. Pax fabulous again, despite our slow start, still 180ish yards & 5 rushing TD's. He fueled comeback on & off field.
6. Huge praise for backup kicker coming in and executing surprise onside in the pressure cooker. He was 7 for 9 in JV.
7. After tying the game we needed to secure the momentum back; onside did just that; coupled with solid TD drive.
8. Proud of our defensive job overall; we had just one interception but close to five more along with good tackling.
9. Rushed only two at times because QB was reading and getting the ball away quickly and they pass block very well.
10. Didn't matter if we rushed 2 or 5, we got to the QB when coverage made him wait longer than he wanted.
11. Lots of defensive player rotations kept players from getting tired and contributed overall to 4th qtr effectiveness.
12. Hunter had a solid game and him being in the secondary was really big without another starter back there.
13. The WR and DB whom sat out last week will be back against Mansfield, and likely the one OL.
14. Excited for home double header, glad S. Taylor is in Stanford; very aware of their running game & dual threat QB.
15. Mansfield not used to travel but expecting good turnout of their fans; encouraged throngs of Abilene/Cooper fans.

Booster Club Update 11/28/11:
> Mansfield game was just crazy....Coach got excited as most of you saw him right after the game
> Had to completely coach this game around the weather...very rare that happens
> On why he gave the ball to Mansfield to start both halves...wanted to replicate the 1st quarter in 3rd qtr but that didn't work out so well
> Only took 14 snaps in 2nd half and only 4 with the wind in 3rd qtr
> Thought the Unsportsmanlike call on Porter was bad call...at worst should have given Mansfield option to take penalty on PAT or kickoff
> Not that pleased with overall officiating in game
> District bell is at the AHS Field House
> Booster Club taking a charter bus going to Denton..$35/head
> Negotiations on playoff sites has been less than enjoyable...PM me if you want details
> Timberview strong running team with very good QB & RB...Allot of option plays
> TV Lines not as big but team speed better than Mansfield
> Collins is very good facililty..played there in 2006
> EVERYONE (except #67) will be practicing tomorrow ;)

Good Luck to you guys this weekend. You all have made a lot of "new" fans from Harlingen with the heart, determination and never say die attitude of your players and the class that the players, coaches and especially fans have shown towards our team and to teams in general. You all have a great, great program and it is a pleasure to root for you guys as you make your trek week after week in these playoffs. Don't let it stop and just keep working hard and winning. You all deserve it.

It was a celebratory atmosphere which very welcomely suprised me. Mostly it was about the overall successful season. It was asked about Evin's knee since it was noticed him wearing a brace the last couple games. Coach said he hyperextended it during the Longview game and he's been playing through it gradually worsening throughout the season. I think an MRI was scheduled that morning to see what could be done if anything, or just rest it. I had questions about Saturday and I'm sure others did, but I bet like me they opted out of spoiling the overall good mood. Generally, the minute or so only spent talking about the last game was mainly complimenting Chuck Taylor. Coach Warren also got us rolling on how it was no fun standing in that weather on the sidelines and especially his feet getting completely drenched despite the advertised "waterproof" socks he bought a long time ago!
Warren will be at a Coach's conferance in Fort Worth when the UIL releases the realignments and the above list of schools is whom he hopes to line up pre-district games against depending upon their agreement and enough weeks before district. Gave us a humorous rundown on how the "stock market like" hustle that occurs when the realignments are scrolled down the electronic boards and you see coaches scrambling to talk to others for schedule arrangements. He related it to watching the stock market scene in Trading Places and the ones missing out are just like the rich younger brother Mortimer to "turn those machines back on!"

Paxton Grayer tweeted that he's going to be a Warhawk and hashtagged TeamMCM so I just asked him to confirm if that's a full or partial scholarship at McMurry (if any). The tweet was favorited by Darius Joseph, but I presume he's still at SMU. This also led me to look at McMurry's 2011 football roster.
http://www.mcmurrysports.com/roster.aspx?path=football&
A couple names stood out that most of us knew were already there - transfers from other schools - Stephen Warren (Valdosta State) and Chris Williams (Nebraska). In addition, another name on that roster brought a big smile to my face; the player described as the "tackling machine" by E-Vol: LB Anthony Carriola.

Well, here's a few things I've noticed due to realignment:
Annual whipping of an El Paso squad will commence one round earlier; we match up with 1-5A for our bi-district.
Area matchup most likely against one of the five Arlington schools (would be surprised if North Crowley or Weatherford snuck in at fourth) with Southlake going D-1. Southlake is D-1 only for the next two years.
It appears the most dangerous opposition in the playoffs is clear on the other side of the regional bracket in District 7-5A. While district 8-5A is by no means full of slouches, I don't see anybody but Copperas Cove (maybe Temple in a few years) getting by CHill, DeSoto, or the Mansfield schools. Likely matchup if the Eagles make it this far--meaning the third round--is against a 7-5A squad, or possibly one of the 5-5A schools like Lewisville Hebron or Flower Mound Marcus. Quarterfinals in D-2 might very well be two LSWC squads, much like what almost happened with Abilene High and Cooper this year.

I had heard that SLC would be 2nd round match up every year but didn't realize they were 2nd largest school in 4-5A pretty much gauranteeing they go D1. More than likely we continue to see an Arlington school come out of the 3-5A vs 4-5A matchups for the 2nd round game. Waco Midway could also be tough coming out of 8-5A.

No idea why I took the alphabetical listing on UIL's site and translated it as the enrollment numbers of the district. Now that I see the time of my reply, I did have my head wrapped around trying to follow a complicated movie on TV. Thanks for the correction.

Thanks. Any idea if someone will be able to put on together for the 2011 season? Maybe some highlight reel on youtube of Abbe as well?

No, sorry. I just ran across it on YouTube. I'd be surprised if Abbe didn't get one eventually, though.

So spring practice is getting close. My lil bro has put on about 10 lbs since the playoffs ended, his goal weight (given by the coaches) is still a ways away but he's gotten huge. Everytime I see him he seems to have grown and put on muscle mass. Anyway, I am excited to see how the spring and summer go from here. Anyone have any other insights?
I live in Allen/Plano so I don't get to see my lil bro very often (every month or two at most) but I'm impressed with how the program has changed his body makeup and overall strength.
Oh and the stadium in Allen (about 10 minutes from my house) is insanely huge, I'd love to have Abilene play there.

The Eagles began spring practice earlier today (or yesterday, as I type at nearly 1am). Story in the ARN: http://www.reporternews.com/news/2012/apr/24/closer-to-home-ahs-starts-spring-football/
17 returning starters :)
