There's no better time like the present to get this one started!

Hebron comes into this game with a 3-0 district record with impressive wins over Flower Mound and Coppell and a not so steller performance against Lewisville. Carroll enters with a 2-1 district record with wins over pretty good Marcus and Flower Mound teams and a heartbreaking loss to Coppell. This game will more than likely decide the seeding for D2, and possibly a district championship.

Carroll's defense looked like it finally showed up against FM, but Hebron's defense has been very good that past four games. Carroll probably has the better passing game, but I will give the rushing edge to Hebron. So it's going to come down to whose defense can make the stops at the right time.

On paper this looks like to be a very good game and one of the best of the year. Let's hope it will live up to it's billing.

Prediction:
My homer pick is Hebron 24 - Carroll 21
But my head says that Carroll's passing attach will prove to be too much, Carroll 28 - Hebron 21. Hope my head is wrong.

Obviously I like the way Hebron has been playing... A very solid team with a good defense...

Carroll has played sketchy football since district started, but I think they've turned the corner at the right time..

This game will be at the "Woodshed" on halloween night, so I expect a "scary" Dragon defense to show up... If we eliminate the turnovers I believe Carroll will win by 2 td's... if not this could be a loss for the Green Machine... Hebron is to good for us to win without mistake free football..

I think Carroll will work on getting these mistakes corrected this week in practice..And with a balanced attack offensively and the defense starting to find its early season form, I will say the Dragons win this one.....

Very tough to call, it will either go two ways..

SLC Defense and Hebrons Defense will contain
SLC 35 Hebron 24

OR

SLCs defense wont show up and Hebron wont contain
SLC 42 Hebron 28

Either way the Green people will gain control of 6-5A at the WoodShed on Halloween night :notworthy

Glad that one of the "scary" things we don't have to concern ourselves with is a 1-2 record going into the Woodshed.

This meeting was supposed to take place last year in the playoffs.......but better late than never.

The Hebron Defense will shut the mouth of the fiery dragon. The kicking game is what wins this one in the end.

If Hebron wins this game, they will at least have a share of the District Championship and a shot at winning it outright. What a huge statement that would be.

The Hebron team will be up for this game as will the Dragons. No holds will be barred by either team.

Both teams have the will to win which is why it will be a Game of the Week maybe even a Game of the Year.

Grades come out just before the game so there could be players missing on both sides.

Since both teams have the ability to beat the other, this game is a "pick em" in my opinion.

I'll make a 28-21 Hebron win at home my pick.

Visitors parking is in the pay lot off of Charles Road. The free home parking is off of Plano Parkway. :D

From Southlake, I would take Hwy. 121 over to the Metroplex. Take the 121 Bypass (Toll) route where it splits past Grapevine and passes over I-35E into Carrollton. Take the FM544 exit from 121 Bypass and travel east on FM544.

You will pass by our new middle school, Killian MS. Continue east on FM 544 to Plano Parkway (in Carrollton). Turn right at the stoplight and you should see the Woodshed now in the distance across the open farmland (where more Hawks will live some day).

Continue past the high school (on your right) to Charles Road at the top of the hill. Make a right at the stoplight and the entrance to the pay parking lot is on your right.

If you are looking for a good place to eat near the Woodshed, you will have to get out early. When you near the Woodshed, you will notice in the distance to the east a huge structure that looks like an arena. This is Prestonwood Baptist Church. Many of the restaurants you seek are over by the church. To get to Hebron Parkway, continue past the parking lot entrance on Charles Road to the next light which is Hebron Parkway.

Restaurants

Lenny's Subs (on Hebron Parkway east of Charles Road, next to Dickey's)
Dickey's BBQ (on Hebron Parkway east of Charles Road) (also on Hebron Parkway west of the 121 Bypass)
Avalon's Restaurant (in Castle Hills subdivision) http://www.avalonsonline.com/
McAllister's Deli (Hebron Parkway east of Midway Road)
Pei Wei (Hebron Parkway east of Midway Road)
Jimmy John's Subs (Hebron Parkway east of Midway Road)
Chuck's Hamburgers (Hebron Parkway east of Midway Road)
California Pizza Kitchen (Willow Bend Mall on Hebron Parkway)
Maggiano's (Hebron Parkway at the Tollway) http://www.maggianos.com/
The Keg Restaurant (Hebron Parkway at the Tollway) http://www.kegsteakhouse.com/
Marshall's BBQ (Josey Lane at Rosemeade Parkway)
Palio's Pizza (Old Denton Road at Hebron Parkway)
Cici's Pizza (Old Denton Road at Hebron Parkway)

Parking could be a problem, just ask the late comers for the Plano game. Probably the best place to park is the lot east of the practice fields, right off of Charles St. But get there early, as it will fill up. If the lots are full, there is a commercial lot across Charles St. that I think you can park in. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, don't want anyone getting towed. As far as directions, just Mapquest the school's address for the best route. But the school is on the corner of Plano Pkwy. and Charles St. Contrary to popular belief, the school is not on Hebron Pkwy, go figure.

The Hebron faithful look forward to your first visit to the Woodshed. We hope will be gracious host, although you'll have to bring your own sushi.:D

Red Brick Pizza
Taco Cabana (Brand new)
Christina's Mexican
Kenny Roger's Rotisseri Chicken
Buffalo Wild Wings (This is still under constuction..don't know if it will be open by Friday night or not)

All of these are on Hebron Pkwy across from Prestonwood Baptist in the same strip center as Dickey's and Lenny's.

Prestonwood Baptist Church is approximately 1/3 mile East of Hebron. They have confirmed that they will allow folks to park on the gravel lots which are on the back west side of the church. The only issue is that Prestonwood is also having their "Fall Festival" that evening, so parking will be a problem regardless....

SLC13
10-25-2008, 11:17 AM
With the 6-5A District Championship likely on the line, the Dragons visit the Hebron Hawks, 3-0 in district and 5-3 overall, for a huge game. Hebron started the season with 3 losses to Wylie(7-1), Mesquite (4-4) and Plano (8-1). They have since rattled off 5 straight wins against Jesuit (2-6), Abilene Cooper (4A), plus district foes Flower Mound (6-2), Coppell (5-3) and Lewisville (2-6).

Statistically the teams matchup this way:

Hebron (5-3, 3-0)
Offense avg: 24.3 ppg and 377.8 ypg
Defense avg: 21.6 ppg and 288.2 ypg
Turnovers (11) & Take aways(9 ): -2

SLC (6-1, 2-1)
Offense avg: 41.3 ppg and 466.4 ypg
Defense avg: 22.7 ppg and 326.2 ypg
Turnovers (14) & Take aways(12): -2

Offensively, Hebron runs the ball over 60% of the time. led by RB Darius Staten (123-717yds) and their QB Justin Iwuji (127-682yds). When Iwuji (110-180-4 for 1,434yds) has thrown, he has spread the ball around to several different targets, WR Alex Norman (22-254yds), Chad Barlow (10-230yds) and deep threat Phillip Mitchell (6-142yds). RB Staten has also caught 17 balls for 159 yds out of the back field

Defensively, Hebron has really stepped it up since the district play started. They have held all three district opponents under the Hawk's season defensive averages. Like the Dragons, the Hawks have a minus TO/TA ratio for the season, but have been +3 since district play started.

All signs point to a very hard fought competitive game. I'd be surprised if the winning margin is greater than 1 score..........

I have seen both Piland and Padron play. The advantage goes to Piland. They throw about the same. Piland is faster, but not as strong of a runner. If he gets the blocks he needs he can stred the defense for 10, 15, or 20+ yards.

Defensively, I still give the edge to the Hawks. They know their assignments and always seem to have 2 or 3 guys ready to hit whoever has the ball.

I am expecting a good game. I cannot give an accurate prediction. However, I am going to homer it and say:

Hawks: 31
SLC: 28

It has been an interesting year so far. The Dragons seemed to hit their stride against a very good FM team. Hebron has owned this district for a couple of years though so the have earned my/our respect. I suspect their offense is not what it once was what with the Lewisville score. If this is a defensive battle I see the Dragons finding a way to win. I am not prepared to give a predictions yet. That will come later in the week. Good week of practice to all.:)

Absolutely. Don't even concern yourselves with practice this week. Rest, heal. Right. Brazil will have the boys ready and you know I was kidding about Piland. I don't know how fast he is but almost 300 yards rushing the last two weeks tells you all you need to know. :notworthy

That's why I think Piland gives us more trouble than Padron would have. Piland looks like he is more of a running threat.

But the Hebron D has risen up to the challange the past few weeks and the Great Dane will have a plan in place to combat the Carroll O.

Hebron had their chances to score one...maybe two more times. But penelties stalled a couple of drives. A holding penelty wiped out a nice long completion, and another hold on the subsequent play.

But give L'ville credit. They also had their chance to score but had a 4th down incompletion inside the Hebron 15 yard line. Their defense forced a lot of Hebron's offensive stalls.

I'd say the best way is to take I-35 S to FM3040/Hebron Pkwy exit. Travel east on Hebron Pkwy 7-8 miles or so to Charles St. Left on Charles St. and left into the parking lot just before you get to Plano Pkwy.

In my mind it was just last year... They werent district games but they were HUGE non playoff games... MNW and Rockwall...

As far as district maybe a few years back, in 05 I think... Against Grapvine at Mustang stadium the final was 28-23, it was the closest margin we had the whole season... They fought us hard... And no one saw that coming... We were destroying teams that year... wow, thinking back on that, I remember coming home with no finger nails..lol.. What a game..

Yes, but the 3A regular season streak is pretty similar to the jump to 5A. We moved to 3A and lost 1 regular season game our first season and never lost another regular season 3A game until we moved to 4A and lost to Gainesville. IMO, the jump from 3A to 4A is much more difficult than moving from 4A to 5A (look at enrolment #'s and others that have made that jump ) - and we stayed competitive in 4A. Nuf history for now.

We were competitive in 4A, though not championship competitive... And people always wonder why... 4A is the most competitive classification in Texas, due to all the 4A schools... The top 5A teams are by far more dominant, but 4A has a whole lot of good teams...

Let's have a look here.

Hebron, a team everyone is suggesting is better than their record, I agree, is coming off a 10 point offensive effort against the Pugilant Farmworkers. Does this concern the Hawk faithful?

It should. Dragon defenders are getting better, healthier and may have found the right mix, finally. As we suspected in pre-season, this unit will define this years Dragon team. It returns this week!

We'll look back at the goal line stand vs FM as the turning point...

This is just a great district; great teams coached by great coaches. It's a whole new dynamic moving to the right (geographically speaking). Every team plays with tremendous heart and a will to win. IMO it's the toughest 5A district in Texas and the teams advancing to the playoffs will be battle tested.

As for this Friday night, with all respect to each teams final district opponent, this game is for all of the marbles. I really thought before the season started this would be how it played out. It just doesn't get much better than this!

No. I think most Hawk supporters, at least the ones I know, knew this was not going to be the rout some had predicted. As mentioned earlier by many, Lewisville played hard but Hebron also shot themselves in the foot a few times with penelties.

I think we have the faith by the way we played the past five games. A balanced offensive attack, great game management by the qb, and an awesome defense. Is that enough to get by Carroll? We'll see Friday. But at least we are encouraged by what we've witnessed in those games.

I also know that most Hawks have circled Halloween since the schedules were announced. We were secretly disappointed that you guys lost to Abilene because we would have been your next opponent. A lot of people were looking forward to that match up. Even though it's a year later and the teams are not the same, we finally have the opportunity to take down the mighty Dragons.

We were in Class 4A until 2006. "Undefeated State Champs at 16-0 in 2005. We lost our first district game last year. in 2007 vs. FM Marcus.

Not really. The Hawks have the talent to beat the Dragons. Whether they will or not, we will see on Friday.

The Hawks collectively have more playmakers on the team than most of the teams the Dragons have faced if they all play up.

And I thought our Kool-Aid was strong.

I thought they were the ones that broke our first long winning streak.:(

They were but let's get some perspective on that. In the previous 5 meetings before that win, from 1988 to 1992, Carroll beat Gainesville 5 times by an average score of 46-10. In all five meetings between the two, both were ranked in the top 5 in the state. The Leopards finally won in 1994's second game. Congratulations to them. They beat a team that would lose another 5 games, finishing 6-6 on the season.

That was kind of the point I was trying to make. You guys usually roll through district then the fun starts in the playoffs. That is why I was asking about the last big regular season game.

Yeah but that's more of a reflection of the districts we were in before than any real slippage on our part. We may not be quite as good as before but we're still a very good team. The difference is the quality of teams we're playing every Friday has increased exponentially.

I'm really looking forward to it! We all (at least us oldtimers) followed Dane when he was here and at Tech, and now he is coaching with you guys. Also I really enjoy seeing the Dragons playing against the top programs in the state, which Hebron definitely is. I only have a few left to cross off of the the list: Hebron, North Shore and the Woodlands are all part of a very short list of top teams the Dragons haven't played.

Me,too. I've said many times that one of the best parts of our time in 5A has been getting to play the historic programs like Permian, Plano, Katy, Lufkin, Westlake, Abilene ect...ect... Hebron may not be historic, yet, but they are highly successful and another "name" program we can now say we've battled. I'd like to be able to mark of Judson, too.

SLC93

We were competitive in 4A, though not championship competitive... And people always wonder why... 4A is the most competitive classification in Texas, due to all the 4A schools... The top 5A teams are by far more dominant, but 4A has a whole lot of good teams...

We were one Stephenville bomb away from possibly being able to say that. Worked out for the best, though. Not sure we'd have been able to replace Rapp with Dodge if he had won a title that year. Overall the 4A years produced a couple of playoff runs, a 66% winning percentage and no title. In other words, joy for some programs but misery for ours.:D

I'm trying to figure out what your point is. Are you measuring Hebron by their district record or how we do in the playoffs? What if we sweep district and lose the first playoff game? Or stumble into the playoffs losing the last two district games but make a 3-4 game run in the playoffs?

Having to play good week in an week out is a no brainer in this district. I'm sure there are a lot of people smarter than me that realize that. But Hebron has risen to the challenge the past three weeks and I believe will continue to rise up to the occasion.

I think the point is that a tough district schedule makes it more difficult going into the playoffs and exposes your weaknesses. In a difficult district you cannot simply hide behind superior talent if you are playing a game that the team might not be at their best.

Even a mediocre team in strong district can give you fits as we learned this year.

Even a mediocre team in strong district can give you fits as we learned this year.

You can also make the argument that a strong district prepares you better for the playoffs. In the first few rounds, you may not face an opponent any stronger than your district foes.

I think that was your point. After reading it again, I may have misinterpreted it. But anyway, my point still stands.

* Youngsters in Carrollton and Southlake experience a huge rise in FDBC ( Front Door Bowl Candy)

* Road Field Advantage is evident once again as the Dragon Roadies bring big time noise to each 3rd down stop.

* Hebron's PA guy reminds everyone afterwards that there' s still one game left in the season, this really wasn't a play-off game.

* Equipment managers for SL make their way to the back of storage for the first time late Friday, searching for the box labeled BLACK PANTS...

Well, you may need some kind of biblical rainfall to keep the score down because SLC's defense has been somewhat suspect as of late.....say, when's the last time someone hung 50+ points on your dreaded and feared defense? Has it ever happened? When's the last time you guys lost a district game? Heck, you almost had two losses coming in to this.

I have faith in the team, but I am very nervous. I have been since the kickoff @ SMU with Plano West. :) But this game to me is for all the marbles. It is the District championship, it is the opportunity to show what we got. The defensive moves last week really seemed to pay off. On offense, I am concerned because Hebron now has a full game of watching Piland tendencies and he is no longer a 'surprise'. But our offense has done its job all season. I guess my feeling is, this is the team that will be taking it into the playoffs. If they are going to make noise there, they need to make noise right. now. To me, how we play this game indicates whether we can take it to the house or not.

It's easy to understand SLC confidence. After all, how many teams have beat you in a football game in the past five years. Not many.

Hebron doesn't have that kind of record (few teams do), but the Hawks have a pretty good record in their short history and a lot of confidence leading into this game.

I have been successful at getting the kitchen remodelers to stay away from home games also.:D

Attaboy! They have an important function to perform on the home front..we'll take care of the football.

Lots of new challenges coming in to 6-5A....your biggest one will be this Friday. Looking forward to a great game, and a Hawk victory.

Problem with this analysis? When you spend so much time looking in the rear view mirror you fail to see the Mac truck that's drifted into your lane. Dragon's make a statement this week with a dominant win over a fine squad from Hebron.

It's tough to ask the crystal ball for more than one magic string a week. This week's sure fire happenings are on the ScottS thread, page 4. A self proclaimed Homer, I amazingly called for another Dragon win. But cause you asked, let's add...

Kool aid, more Kool aid...:)

God bless. The fix was nice!:D

Actually, we effectively "lost" six games in 3A. Hard to consider the game with Burnet (7-7?) a tie when they advanced to the 5th round of the playoffs and our boys stayed home. Glad UIL did away with the "penetrations" tiebreaker rule.

Thinking back on our last two losses to Coppell and the Burnet game, we have a pretty miserable record in games tied at the end of regulation.:(

That Burnet game was a semifinal game for the right to advance to the 6th and finals round. That team could play defense, for sure. No offense though.

wear what you want, you can rest assured that Hebron will show up, no matter what color you wear..........that said, i regret from a fan's perspective, in missing this game. There is NOTHING like this environment. If freakin' Keller would have taken care of business, then we would have this type of game this week. We will be ready whichever team wins. Best of health to both!!!!

Just got in from the game...no excuses...Carroll got owned by Hebron. QB and running back for Hebron went for for over 450 yards rushing..Very poor defensive effort by the Dragons...not much else to say...Need to shape up to have any kind of run in the playoffs.
