I attended Southern Miss way back in the stone age.(70's). Jeff Bower was the QB. He went on to eventually be the head coach. He had 14 straight winning seasons. ( But some times those seasons were 7-5.) The alumni got bored, spoiled, complacent and got him fired. Along comes the SAVIOR to our program. The hatman....Larry Fedora from OK Lite. This will be our first losing season in 15 years. Fedora brought his same defensive scheme that he had at State. It is not all that good. Southern Miss USED to be known for good defense, bad offense. Now it has a pretty sweet offense and no defense at all. Jeff Bower keeps looking better and better with each pasing Saturday.

I attended USM in the late 90's. Bower did a lot for the USM football program, but the program had gone stale. He left the cupboard bare big time on the defensive side of the ball. People also tend to forget that Bower struggled the first 3 years he was on the job. Give Fedora some time and USM will be back. Their offense will score plenty of points. He needs to concentrate on recruiting defense, especially defensive lineman and DB's.

Bower had a raw deal getting run.
I was at the Rice game and DeAndre Brown is a beast at WR.

DeAndre Brown is a true freshman from Ocean Springs, Ms.
He was rated the 6th best incoming reciever. That was Fedora's best pickup. But he was being recruited previously by Bower. We have not been the same defensive team since Coach Nix left for South Carolina. Nix is presently the Ole Miss DC. That turns some Golden Eagle stomachs.
I think Brown will play on Sundays.

Firebird called this right after it happens. Southern Miss got a bit greedy. It should never have fired a coach that consistently won conference championships and made it to bowl games. SoMiss was never bad. Yes, it appeared as though UH was gaining ground on them, but you still don't fire a coach like Bower, who knew how to win games and loved the school. Even if Fedora proves to be a success, he is gonna bolt for BCS land as soon as he gets the shot.

Bower built that program into something that made the big cigars think it was something it is not. Bower was perfect. He got the most out of his players and team and he was a damn fine coach. Unfortunately for Bower, he did such a good job that some started thinking somebody could do better. In a way, Bower was the author of his own demise.

Any Tech fan that follows recruiting is well aware of DeAndre Brown and Julio Jones, two guys that we had hopes of signing at Tech, however unlikely it was. Tech was supposedly in their final 5's, whatever that is worth.
I still say that is what Leach's true challenge is today. Get some talent that can stretch that offense even more. Having 2 or 3 big time WRs on the field in "the system" would be fun to watch. It's frustrating to see these guys skip Tech, even though I truly get it why they do. How could they ever think they wouldn't get the ball in Leach's offense? How do they think they woudln't be recognized after Crabtree won the Bilitnikof Award as a RS Freshman?

I remember wins against teams like Georgia, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama. Some of those are way back in the 80's. Now we are getting our clock cleaned against Memphis, UTEP, Rice. Big Big diffence in our recent lack in the strength of sced. We used to play more big money games and win a few of those. We would be a much better team in a BSC conf. If they let Baylor in one they should let us. We consistantly beat Miss St. and Ole Missy back in the day.(Pre Bower) I think Bower had us in the top 25 in parts of 97, 98, 99. That's what got everybody's hope up.
But we also had a 9 million dollar athletic budget.
