I've been meaning to do this for a while. I'll have a bunch of categories and you can make up your own. I'll have many levels just to include more towns because I really do like a bunch of towns in Texas. I'm going by center city populations from the 2000 Census and not metro areas.
Over 1 million
Dallas- That's not to say the other 2 don't have good points, but I get more of my entertainment value out of Dallas. I've done almost everything I want to do in Houston and San Antonio, but I'll always like sports in Dallas more.
500,000-999,999
El Paso- There was no way I was voting for Austin, which is most beautiful and I do like Fort Worth. I just like the Sun Bowl, the star on the mountain, the Wyler Tramway, Scenic Drive, and Transmountain Road. Oh, yeah they also have a Texas Tech Medical Center.
250,000-499,999
Arlington- The Cowboys, Rangers, and Six Flags beats Corpus Christi in a close race. Corpus isn't bad.
200,000-249,999
Plano- In a 2-horse race, Plano beats Garland since Southfork Ranch is close to Plano. Otherwise it's pretty much a dead heat.
175,000-199,999
Lubbock- Well, I'm not a huge fan of Laredo and the Cowboys are leaving Irving, so that leaves Lubbock. You guys know the routine. I love West Texas and nobody is beating out the home of Texas Tech and Charles Hardin Holley!:D
150,000-174,999
Amarillo- They're running unopposed, but I love that crazy town so it doesn't really matter anyway!
125,000-149,999
Brownsville- Yeah, they beat out Grande Prairie and Pasadena, which are both dives to me. Brownsville isn't in my top 10, but I do like it and it's not far from South Padre.
110,000-124,999
Abilene- Mesquite, Beaumont, and Waco lose out. Waco is a dive, but I like the museums and they have Big 12 sports. Abilene is OK with me. I like the sports, the location, and the military presence.
100,000-109,999
Wichita Falls- I could care less if others like it. I like the location to Big 12 teams and Dallas and I like the people. I don't care about Carrollton either way, but McAllen isn't bad.
90,000-99,999
Midland and Odessa- The jackrabbits and Texas Tech in Odessa are tied with Midland's nice stadium and the Commemorative Air Force Museum.
80,000-89,999
San Angelo- You didn't think I was going to take Denton, Killeen, or Tyler did you?:D I hate Killeen and Tyler's traffic is terrible. That leaves me with an OK Denton or the West Texas town with an Air Force base.
70,000-79,999
Longview- They beat out Lewisville. Besides the fact that I lived in Longview as a kid and my parents have lived there most of the time I've been in the Air Force, I'm not about to vote for a team that beat Judson 58-34!:D
60,000-69,999
Victoria- This is the weakest vote of confidence yet. I think the location between SA, Houston and Corpus is pretty good, but they also win by default. I'm not voting for Bryan or College Station, I think Baytown is a dive, and Round Rock costs too much. Sugar Land is OK, but I'll stick with Victoria.
50,000-59,999
Galveston- This was a 9 horse race with a couple towns I hate (Temple and Port Arthur), 4 towns that I don't care either way about (Missouri City, North Richland Hills, Flower Mound, and McKinney) and only 2 other towns that I like (The Woodlands and Harlingen). The beach and the goofy stuff along with the fun stuff in Galveston beats out good weather in Harlingen and the cool stuff in the touristy part of The Woodlands.
40,000-49,999
Mission- This is a 10-horse race and I'm too lazy to list the other 9. The Tom Landry mural downtown trumps the other cities!
30,000-39,999
New Braunfels- They win in a group of 21. San Marcos was 2nd. Hey, it's a decent town.
25,000-29,999
Lake Jackson- The streets "This Way" and "That Way" intersecting each other is a winner. It's also the home of Ron Paul. Big Spring would've been more of a challenge, but I was there on Sunday and it's just too much of a dive for me.
20,000-24,999
Kerrville- I love that town. It has hills and is just big enough to have most things you need.
19,000-19,999
Weatherford- It's close to DFW, but on the side towards open spaces.
18,000-18,999
Brownwood- OK, so the gerrymandering has started. I didn't want to go with 17,500-19,999 and leave some out. It's another town that has most things you need and it's also west of I-35.
17,000-17,999
Pampa- Hey, it's a dive, but it's also where I went during the summer as a kid and I have a lot of history in that town.
16,000-16,999
Mineral Wells- It's a cool town on the way to San Antonio. Canyon Lake put up a good fight with their sign that says, "Don't speed through our dam town or you'll see our dam judge!"
15,000-15,999
Gainesville- They kinda win by default. It's not a bad town with the outlet and muffler men out by the airport.
14,500-14,999
Hereford- The Whitefaces beat out the Stephenville cows and Universal City!
14,000-14,499
Borger- Yes, I split up the category to not leave out Hereford. I have ties to Borger, just like Pampa.
13,750-13,999
Mt. Pleasant- I lived there 5 years, but this category is to protect a few smaller towns!
13,000-13,749
Brenham- I'm not a big fan of the hard ice cream, but it is good ice cream and the tour is cool. Dumas was a close 2nd and I'm using this off number because I wasn't going to vote for Beeville unopposed.
12,500-12,999
Canyon- Hey, they have the drama "Texas", the best museum in the state, and my dad went to college there before they crossed over to the dark side!:p
12,000-12,499
Port Lavaca- They win because they're the Sandcrabs!
11,500-11,999
Converse- I sure ain't voting for Katy, but the Big C does beat out Vernon. It might be a dive in some ways, but I always liked the housing prices and the school (Not the administration).
11,000-11,499
Sweetwater- It sure ain't going to be Vidor. That city could burn down as far as I'm concerned. Nah, Sweetwater has the WASP Museum (Women pilots) and the Mustang Bowl. They lose some points for being stupid enough to catch snakes and then release them. Kilgore, Athens, and Henderson are OK.
10,500-10,999
Burkburnett- This probably would've been Snyder a week ago. I want to pay respect to the man (Burk Burnett) who was friends with the Comanche Indians (Mainly Quanah Parker) at a time that most white men viewed them as a threat and killed as many as they could.
10,000-10,499
Clute- I question having a festival for a pest like a mosquito, but Willie Manchew wins out!
9,500-9,999
Pecos- The museum with the bullet holes puts them over the top.
9,000-9,499
Wharton- They beat Brownfield on the strength of the TeePee Motel.
8,500-8,999
Fredericksburg- I like this town and Wide isn't enough to put Woodway over the top.
8,000-8,499
Liberty- The Liberty Bell does it. Otherwise, Aransas Pass would put up a good fight.
7,500-7,999
Fort Stockton- Paisano Pete (Giant roadrunner) beats out Hondo "This is God's Country, don't drive through it like hell" and Perryton.
7,250-7,499
Rockport- There are a few more cool things here than Hidalgo's killer bee.
7,000-7,249
Dalhart- The giant saddle, XIT museum, and location trumps Crystal City's Popeye statue and Lackland AFB.
6,750-6,999
Childress- I went through here a lot as a kid and it's the best place for stuff between Vernon and Amarillo. Lampasas put up a good fight with Alan Jackson's comment about the women and they have a place I like to stop and sleep.
6,500-6,799
Littlefield- They have a replica of the XIT giant windmill and Waylon Jennings got his start at KLLL. That expensive motel bill a few weeks ago didn't kill them!
6,000-6,499
Slaton- It's not a bad town, it's close to Lubbock and there weren't any good options over 6,250 and not great options between 6,000-6,250.
5,750-5,999
Alpine- I like the hills and the Jackassic Park over Seminole and Breckenridge, which weren't bad.
5,500-5,749
Granbury- The scenery wins over Kermit's water tower with Kermit the Frog, Forney's Statue of Liberty, and Cameron's miniature town.
5,000-5,499
Decatur- I went with creature comforts of a decent town over Gun Barrel City, the train in Rusk, and Lulings decorative pumpjacks.
4,750-4,999
Marble Falls- The beautiful town and lake are plenty, but having Texas Tech doesn't hurt!
4,500-4,749
Jacksboro and Muleshoe- Hey, I like the mule and giant horseshoe. Jacksboro won state in football the year I was born and I like the Tiger that looks to be jumping off the sign in front of the high school.
4,250-4,499
Pittsburg- I lived there and they have the Ezekiel Airship. I'll give West Columbia 2nd with the Varner-Hogg Mansion.
4,000-4,249
Ballinger- The giant cross puts them over the top. Yes, it will get more painful as we get smaller!
3,900-3,999
Columbus- Mikeska's BBQ with all the stuffed animals does it.
3,800-3,899
Cisco- Conrad Hilton's first hotel was here.
3,700-3,799
Eastland and Dublin- I refuse to break this tie. I broke a tie between Midland and Odessa, but I'm not going to decide between Eastland with the stamp murals and Rip the Horny Toad and Dublin's Dr Pepper.
3,600-3,699
Dilley- Eating Dilly Bars at the Dairy Queen and the watermelon statue make them a winner.
3,400-3,599
Ozona- I like the Davy Crockett statue and had to expand out the size because there was nobody worth voting for between 3,500-3,599.
3,300-3,399
Llano- Beauty wins out over location (Clyde) and a strawberry (Poteet).
3,200-3,299
Henrietta- They have a Dairy Queen and we don't and I'm not voting for a town with a giant rattlesnake (Freer).
3,100-3,199
Electra- I voted east of town with Henrietta, so I'll go west this time. I like the old electric building.
3,000-3,099
Spearman- Grand Saline's salt lick and Quanah's Medicine Mound are tough, but I'm not voting against the town I was conceived in!
2,900-2,999
Seymour- Hamilton puts up a good fight with Billy the Kid's grave, but I'm going with the Tech lovers at the Rock Inn Cafe.
2,800-2,899
Winters- The home of Big Blue is one of my faves and I ate a Blizzard at the DQ on Monday. There is no racket better than a DQ a block away from the stadium in a town with the nickname Blizzards! slorch's Abernathy with Jesus in a glass case lost out and I just couldn't "Run" with Scissors!
2,700-2,799
Hallsville- I got a cool bumper sticker from the Vet one time! It's an OK town, but not great.
2,600-2,699
Junction- I always liked the town, but having Texas Tech doesn't hurt.
2,500-2,599
Panhandle- This is close to my roots. I sure wasn't going to say that lousy Daingerfield. Mason Walters should've gone to Tech if I was going to vote for Wolfforth. Ranger and Anson are a strong 2nd and 3rd.
2,400-2,499
Van Horn- The cheap motels and John Madden Haul of Fame at Chuy's beats out the Memphis Cyclones.
2,300-2,399
Kemah- I'll go with the cool boardwalk over Comfort, which isn't bad.
2,200-2,299
Canadian- Gene Cockrell's sculptures and the Canadian River Bridge beat out Fritch and the Hamlin Pied Pipers.
2,150-2,199
Idalou- I want to giove props to the town who uses a 40-50' trailer to brag about the football team.
2,100-2,149
Mason- I like the scenery. Otherwise Glen Rose might've won with the dinosaurs and Creation Evidence Museum.
2,000-2,099
Jefferson and Shamrock- We'll call it a draw. Shamrock's retro gas station on Route 66 and the Blarney Stone are in a dead heat with Jefferson's history.
1,950-1,999
Clarendon- When I got there, I was almost to Pampa.
1,900-1,949
Albany and Stinnett- Albany has the State longhorn herd at Ft. Griffin State Park and it disappointed dragonsdaddy that I didn't mention them at first and I just might need to consult him for medical/dental advice one of these days! My grandparents lived in Stinnett when I was a kid and my grandmother taught school there.
1,850-1,899
Crosbyton- They have my favorite rest area in Texas (One of the 3 places to get free internet between Wichita Falls and Lubbock) and a goofy guy at the Allsup's that is cool to talk to.
1,800-1,849
Archer City- It might have a bunch of meth addicts, but it also has the best bookstore complex around for a town this size.
1,750-1,799
DeKalb- Hoss Cartwright is buried here.
1,700-1,749
Fort Hancock- I like the plaques for the 4-time defending Six Man Champions in the 90's that had 2 kids win titles all 4 years.
1,650-1,699
Menard- I like the Ditch Walk. Otherwise it would be Garfield, which I visited because I like Garfield the Cat!
1,600-1,649
Baird- My grandfather was born there.
1,550-1,599
Muenster- I like the glockenspiel.
1,500-1,549
Munday- The Moguls location beats the Itasca Wampus Cats and "The Boy in the Bubble" from Shenandoah.
1,400-1,499
Bruceville-Eddy- I like the statuaries they make here.
1,350-1,399
Roscoe- The Plowboys beat out Wheeler.
1,300-1,349
Hico- Because I can get the good Dr Pepper on the fountain and they have the Koffee Kup. Hawkins was a good fight for 2nd place.
1,250-1,299
Hutto and Rocksprings- I'm not going to choose between Hutto's Hippos or Rocksprings bats at Devil's Sinkhole.
1,200-1,249
Iraan- They have Alley Oop Land!
1,150-1,199
Cut and Shoot- Besides the crazy name, they have some goofy people that keep elephants.
1,100-1,149
Earth- I have an earth t-shirt and they beat out Betram's dinosaur made out of car parts.
1,075-1,099
Spur- I love the rock stadium on the hill.
1,050-1,074
Fort Davis- The highest town in Texas beats out White Deer and Cross Plains.
1,000-1,049
Aspermont, Odonnell, and Ransom Canyon- Aspermont was the site of the most moving thing I've seen in this state (A complete Homecoming Court where dads escorted their daughters), Odonnell has a tribute and museum to Hoss Cartwright, and Ransom Canyon has some goofy houses just east of Lubbock.
950-999
Bandera and New London- I've got to go with the Cowboy Capital on this one. I can't leave out the site of the worst school tragedy ever. They have a museum in New London about the gas leak that killed over 300 kids in the 1930's.
900-949
Throckmorton- The home of Bob Lilly wins a tight one over the home of Roy Orbison (Wink) and Dot's Mini Museum on Route 66 (Vega).
850-899
Lakeport- My dad has worked in that town for most of the last 28 years. Otherwise, I'd go with Miles with the old tractor and waving metal cowboy.
800-849
McLean- They have the Devil's Rope Museum and my grandmother lived there growing up.
750-799
Silverton- I like the nice scenery.
700-749
Matador- Hey, it's the home of Motley County High School.
650-699
Rule- Because it rules (Except for when they play Richland Springs in football!).
600-649
Skellytown- Close to Pampa will always beat out the "Happy Cowboys" and the "Frost Polar Bears".
550-599
Groom- The cross, the Mary restaurant, and Route 66 trump Lefors and Miami. I have a lot of fun memories in Talco, but that place is a dive!
500-549
Balmorhea- The world's largest pool wins it for them. The Jayton Jaybirds didn't have enough going for them.
450-499
Buffalo Gap and Turkey- These are 2 of the better names in Texas and decent towns. Winfield is good memories, but gets 3rd place.
425-449
Windthorst- You knew it was coming. You just didn't know when! This was a tough category. Quitaque (Caprock Canyons State Park) and Scotland (6 miles north of Windthorst) weren't easy to knock off.
400-424
Los Ebanos- They have the hand-pulled car ferry.
375-399
Bellevue, Leakey, and Uhland- I like Leakey's scenery, and I get the good Dr Pepper in Bellevue, but I also have to give a shout out to Uhland who I've often wondered if they like the Houston Cougars!
350-374
Burton, Nazareth, and Richland Springs- Burton made plaque for a concrete block that fell off of a train and Nazareth is cousins to Windthorst, but I also have to pay my respects to Richland Springs with the awesome football in recent years.
325-349
Dickens and Reklaw- Dickens is a nice stop between WF and Lubbock. Reklaw is Walker spelled backwards.
300-324
Trent- The turf 6-man field is great.
275-299
Woodson- They got bombed by the Japanese in WW2.
250-274
Benjamin- Another stop on the way to Lubbock.
225-249
Utopia- I love the scenery.
200-224
Sanford- Hey, this place is in the middle of a bunch of places where my relatives have lived.
175-199
Valentine- The fake Prada store beats Jolly.
150-174
Cool and Uncertain- I say the word cool a lot and Uncertain has paddle boats on the only natural lake in Texas (Caddo).
125-149
Pyote- It is the former home of Rattlesnake Bomber Base, which was used to train WW2 pilots including the guys that flew the Enola Gay that bombed Japan. Carl's Corner with the frogs on the roof is in 2nd place.
100-124
Miller's Cove and Mobeetie- Miller's Cove is good memories and Mobeetie has a great 1800's jail. Round Mountain was 3rd.
75-99
Round Top- I like the cool car museum.
50-74
Mentone- The smallest county seat in the United States. The county has less than 100 people, but the Court House is still 2 stories!
25-49
Rowden- Because it was named after my great grandfather.
1-24
Langtry- They have a replica of Judge Roy Bean's saloon at the tourist and travel center.
Over 1 million
Dallas- That's not to say the other 2 don't have good points, but I get more of my entertainment value out of Dallas. I've done almost everything I want to do in Houston and San Antonio, but I'll always like sports in Dallas more.
500,000-999,999

15,000-15,999

14,500-14,999

1,500-1,549

225-249
