If they made a Mount Rushmore for High School Football Coaches, who do you think they should put on there?

I gotta throw down Tom Kimbrough for what he did in Plano.

up here he wasn't considered so holy by some. GA was notorious for dare I say "recruting" it finally got him in trouble at Pilot Point. I know a lot of players that played for his Celina teams that grew up in McKinney, Plano, Allen, Prosper and Frisco.

this post is sacrilege - How dare anyone try to construct a Mt. Rushmore and not include DW Rutledge.

I'm copying this and sending it to Coach Foolery. I think he retired a couple of years back but I bet Don Harris of WOAI-TV in SA can make him come back one last time.

I used to listen to his radio gags on The Ticket in San Antonio.

Chad Schroeder, former Austin Westlake coach. Best coach of the best team in the 90s.

Well, for starters, there can only be four guys up there. That is pretty hallowed ground. I don't think it should be just a coaching thing, either.... so here are my representatives:

1. The Demi-God: Tom Landry, Mission. Possibly the best product ever to come out of Texas HS football, as a coach and a man. He was one of our state's true treasures. He is revered by every fan of the game, even die- hard Dallas Cowboy haters.

2. The Phenom: Earl Campbell, Tyler John Tyler. I say the Tyler Rose is the greatest player ever to strap on pads as a high-schooler in Texas. Plus he stayed in-state his whole career-- UT, Houston Oilers. Watching clips of him run will give you chills.

3. The Legend. Gordon Wood, Brownwood. Tough call between GA Moore and Gordon Wood. Moore had more wins, but still-- Gordon Wood is a legend. Maybe with time I will appreciate GA Moore, but its like with college football. There may be coaches with more w's or trophies, but Paul "Bear" Bryant is THE face of college football. Wood is THE face of Texas HS football.

4. The Guru. Dave Campbell. Yes, I know how much respect that Dave Campbell's book gets on this site. But Campbell, more than anyone else, helped take HS football to unprecedented popularity in Texas. Here, we don't just follow the local team, we follow the game state-wide. Plus, every single person on this board will buy the mag on the first day it comes out next year.

You forgot the greatest new age coach in football Coach Hill from Smithson Valley. I mean what he has accomplished is unprecedented. I mean he doesn't have any titles, but he is the greatest coach ever. It is impossible to beat him even though his teams have been upset in a game annually since moving up to 5A football. The guy is a legend. Actually I just wanted to post this so that I can beat all of the smithson valley posters proclaiming him as the second coming

LeanderLion, where do you get that Austin Westlake was the best team of the '90s? Westlake won one 5a title and lost in the other champ. game they played in. Judson won 3 and played in 6. Midland Lee alos won 2 back to back titles in the '90s but there can be no arguement--- the '90's belonged to Judson.

so good that while at Carrollton Newman Smith he never won more than 2 games or while at Fossil Ridge never having them at oe even close to the top. If Mr Dragonfootballfan is going to get all over Coach Hill for no reason, then it should be pointed out that Coach Dodge actually had a few seasons where he only won 1 game.

lol i was just going by what the Austin AMerican Statesman says, and they've said that for years and years. Then again they also write about Westlake more than any other team.

Well some people call me a kiss-a$$, so here goes my take on Firebird's four.

Tom Landry
Gordon Wood
Earl Campbell or Ken Hall
KT2000

By the way, I stopped buying Dave's mag about 3 years ago. Way too much info on this site.

he has definitely matured a lot since those days and he was just starting to get a good thing going at Fossill Ridge before he came over to Carroll. When I first heard his coaching record when he was hired, I was amazed. He was well underqualified to be the head coach of a tradition rich school like Carroll, but I guess Ledbetter made the correct decision.

One of my buddies was telling me the other night that he does not call the plays of offense. Is this true?

A lot has changed since I was close enough to know this. I am pretty sure that he calls the plays, but gets input from an offensive coordinator. What I do know is that he does not give the initial signal for the plays all the times, which is not what I think you meant. I know that if the offensive coordinator sees somthing that he can exploit he can tell coach Dodge and he may or may not send in a new play.
