In week ten Madison was dominating their neighborhood rival when something unexpected happened. MacArthur went on a 21-0 run late in the second half to take a 38-30 lead with 1:30 to play. A stunned Madison crowd that had witnessed another second half defensive collapse against Smithson Valley a week earlier began to filter out of the stadium thinking this is not the way to go into the playoffs. With Mac afraid to kick deep risking a Caflisch return, they kicked it high and short. A fair catch was called and a Mac player foolishly ran into the Madison player. With the fifteen yard penalty tacked on Madison still had hope for a quick 50 yard TD drive followed by a 2 point PAT to force the tie. It happened! In overtime the Madison defense that had been absent for the final 18 minutes of regulation woke up. They swarmed the Mac offense like a locust storm. Mac lost yardage on two of the three plays and was forced to attempt a long field goal that was well short and wide left. Madison quickly finished Mac off with a TD scamper by Tony Green to win 44-38 in OT. This M&M bowl was an unexpected classic and the ending has taken the Mavericks from certain playoff failure to possible playoff success.

Things like that are sometimes the catapult to great things. That would be unheard of on previous Mav teams. They just didn't have the toughness to come back like that.

The '01,'02,&'03 Madison teams (also known as the Gary Green, Jr. years) did that sort of stuff all the time. The small exception was when they missed the game tieing PAT against SV in the '02 R4 final, the big exception was when Westlake scored the go ahead TD with under two minutes in the 4th in the bi-district round in '03. That whole Maverick team was in a state of shock after watching their star defensive back David Edwards be carted off the field from a spinal cord injury suffered three play earlier. David's hit on Westlake receiver Coy Aune forced him to drop the ball, and left Westlake with a 3rd and 27. The Madison defensive unit was so stunned by the resulting injury (with everyone realizing their friend and teammate could die) they were not mentaly or physically prepared to defend a popwarner team. Westlake took advantage of the situation as they should and came up with some big plays in that come from behind drive. On the kickoff with enough time for the cardiac kids to make a come back they simply fumbled the ball in the endzone allowing Westlake to recover for a TD putting the game out of reach. That Madison team was the D1 (Judson didn't make the playoffs) Region 4 favorite and should have reached the semi-final round.

Lonny23 love to talk about Gary Green. He's a huge fan. I hope you two get into a discussion about him here.

I think (and hope) that this years Mavericks have something the teams in those years you mention were missing.

They do! A QB that is their bonifide team leader and a Green that doesn't mind that fact!

What has happened with David in the last couple of years?

There have been several stories on the San Antonio news stations about David. They said he has some sensations in this feet and hands now. The Aune family has been very very helpful to David as well. I think Coy's mom even took David to the Westlake vs Hays game. I think there might also have been an article in the Express News.

David is doing as great as anyone in his situation could be. He is the most unbelievably positive person I know. Since he graduated last May, he has been undergoing physical therapy four days a week and although he has regained very little movement he is getting mentally and physically stronger everyday. He still attends Madison football games. The reason I know so much about him is because he is the focus of a feature length documentary film that I am producing/directing. We started production this past May and will continue shooting through the Summer of 2006. We plan to have the World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2007.

That's good stuff on two counts...graduation and the film...he continues to be in our prayers and hopefully he'll make more progress in God's time.

I wasn't sure what his name was by I saw something about him on the news the other day. It's really good to hear that he's getting better. I wish the best for him.

I had said in another post that Madison should make it to the regional final and IMO it was because of Caflish. The last drive against Mac was a good drive and he showed his leadership but the play that impressed me most was the 2-point conversion. They ran a sweep right and threw back to Caflish to the left. The pass was short at the 1yd line and was batted by a Mac defender and Caflish at the same time. The ball could have fallen to the ground but Caflish kept his focus a caught it in the endzone given Madison the tie and as the post above states.....they dominated the overtime. I can't speak for past Madison teams but I can say after watching a few of this of the games this year, they will fight and come back time and time again. Caflish believes and his team believes in him.

I was standing just beyond the back of the endzone filming the 2 Point PAT and Caflisch leaped up and caught the ball on the 2 1/2 yard line, then immediately was hit by the Mac defender at that spot. He continued to drive to the goaline and was blasted at the one yard line, but not before reaching the ball out over the goal line! He took a hell of a hit from that second defender and was noticebly in pain. The ball flew back into the field of play and bounced across the sideline, but the ball had broke the goal line. Caflisch wears #7 because he loved to watch Elway while growing up. He has an obvious similar style of play. He loves to run down field and block for his running backs. As did Elway!

by the way,David's younger brother also goes to Madison and has told me that the family is doing well and glad to be able to put what happened in the past and focus on life.
