Wide, he actually isn't bad. He does a very listenable "County/Rap" thing.

As for the "Crick in my neck" thing, heck, even I say that.

You gotta get out more! :D

I have heard some of his songs and they really aren't that bad. Although I would never promote this and would generally not even admit to listening to it. I would be way to embarrassed.

My ears...bleeding.. my gut, hurting...I actually hit my head on the wall here next to me desk...
That's stupid...really really stupid..

Wide, did you see Cowboy Troy with Big and Rich at the NBA All-Star game? They were like a circus singing, "Save a Horse. Ride a Cowboy."

Troy is from Dallas and he's OK.

this is the most ridiculous thing ever. Even more ridiculous than when I went to the texas motor speedway and these rednecks with a boom box started blasting a country music version of the snoop dogg song "gin and juice". This may be the most terrible thing that I have seen or heard. Atleast that asian kid from american idol was terrible and I could laugh at him and then his 15 minutes ran out and I don't ever have to see him again. I don't think I am going to be that lucky with this guy

My wife listens to CMT quite a bit and I rejected the guy at first like you guys, but over time, like Wide said, that "I played chicken with the train" tune gets in your head and then you're hooked. Rush? DreamTheater? Queensryche? That's funny..

That stuff is kool on 80's nite I guess...hahaha..

Try Static-X, SlIpKn0T, NIN... That'll get you off to a good start...

Really though, I like a lot of stuff. But I tend to listen to the stuff that is more heavy. Right now I am listening to DieForm a lot. I think they have been around for a while, but I just recently discovered them. They are like.. uh.. Nothing else...haha..

Nah, I'm more into Fear Factory, Metallica, Godsmack and System of a Down for more modern stuff. Can't get into NIN or Slipknot.

Godsmack and Dream Theater never leave the CD tray. I like some rap, but not much of this new school business. I still listen to the Chronic, Cube, Doggystyle and Bone Thugs. I'm not converting over to this new stuff.

You should at least check out the latest NIN.. "With Teeth". It's not really the same as other NIN stuff. I like it pretty good.
FearFactory is ok. Metallica.. I kinda figured that went without saying. Everybody is a Metallica fan, some just dont know it. Godsmack is kool. I got to hang out with them a few years back at a show. I was working security for a venue in Shreveport. So I've met a lot of people. That's how I have become a fan of a lot of people..Like Garth Brooks.. He's a kool dude.

(rap, I dont care for. I like the old old (rap.. But that's it. Too$hort, 2Live[rew. Whodini... But I don't listen to it much.. I have a reputation to uphold..haha..

Hey AZ...I never looked at your location before...

I don't ever like to knock on any type of music because I am a musician myself and make a living that way, but when you write a song about playing chicken with a train, I have to speak up.

This, Big and Rich, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, ect. is what's wrong with "country music" these days. Those guys don't even write there own songs, how can you respect them?

Kenny Chesney has a new album coming out pretty soon, and on the back of the booklet is a picture of him with a guitar. I can GURANTEE you he doesn't know a chord or a riff of any kind.

Country music has really gone south and it's been like that for a while. How anyone could go out and buy some of these musicians records is beyond me. How someone could get into this music is beyond me. There are a lot of bands out there that deserve to be on the radio but aren't because pieces of trash like Cowboy Troy take up the airwaves.

And the cut of 'Somebody Take Me Home' completely blows. Kenny is notorious for ruining great songs. Just leave Texas Country music alone Nashville!

I've heard that old crap about writing your own music since the 60's. It's a bogus argument. The Boston Pops doesn't write their own music, do they not deserve respect? George Strait, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, The London Philharmonic, and Elivs Presley, among others, didn't write their own music. Do they not deserve respect. Some people write, some people perform, some do both, there should be no less respect for the first two just because God didn't gift them with the ability to do both. All three are integral to the popularity and success of the music industry. You should broaden your view a bit and be a bit more inclusive of those of "lesser" talents. BTW, what Top 40 songs have you written or performed to be so critical of others lack of talent?

I never said I didn't have repsect for guys like Presley and Sinatra. Both of them are very influencial to me. I have respect for every artist that you named, but again, not as much as I would if they wrote there own stuff. I have a feeling if you played guitar and wrote your own tunes, you'd feel the way I do. You'd understand just how challenging it is to write a song.

I don't have a problem with people not writing there own songs really. It's the fact that the songwriters get zero or no recognition and people just assume that, for example, Kenny Chesney wrote all of his songs. If you get the chance go listen to Kenny's track called "Somebody Take Me Home" and then listen to the original version by Randy Rogers..tell me which is better.

And no, I haven't written or performed a Top 40 song, but I am working on it. ;)

Broaden my view, huh? Which artists would you suggest I start listening to?

wide-e-wide
11-20-2005, 12:27 AM
I agree with both of you...if that is possible?
I have never been a big fan of the re-make...
In fact I can only count 5 or so...re-makes that were as good/better
than the original...The biggest being...The Rolling Stones remake of Otis
Redding's "Satisfaction"...

And I really appreciate artists that write their own music...
That's why I admire Stevie Wonder so much...Paul Simon...
Elton John...India Arie...Alicia Keys...the list goes on...

But something can be said for the performers...artists/bands
that rarely did their own music...they are just as talented...but just don't have talent in a dual capacity....'ya dig?

I just love music...and 75% of the stuff now days...is not music to me.

I agree with you about the recognition thing for writers, especially for Rock. However, Country goes out of it's way to honor writers for their talents. Each video on CMT has writing credits and the writers consistantly get featured on-stage at the various awards shows and are regularly inducted into the CM Hall-Of-Fame. Country artists are very aware of the debt they owe to the writers and give them their props regularly.
