What are these teams strengths and weaknesses? What needs to happen for your team to win? Who are the key players on both sides of the football that need to come through in order for you team to win?

From what I know about Hays their offense starts and stops with their top back Amadaus Waters...so he goes so goes Hays. If Lufkin shuts him down they will win. On the flip side Hays needs to control the ball keep it away from the Lufkin's offense and play solid defense from sideline to sideline and not let Lufkin's receivers get behind them or catch swing passes and break those for long gains.

I've not seen Hays, but have heard that they may be a little weak in the secondary compared to Lp's speedy and talented receivers. The weather is calling for lots of sunshine and low 70's. If the wind stays down, it could be a long day for the db's.
I think it will be interesting to see how well Hays runs the ball and chews up the clock. If they can establish ground dominance, then this will be a great game. If not, LP could very well blow them out.
It all depends on the wind and who protects the football. LP's QB needs a big game, as does the RB from Hays.
Hays obv. does something right, averaging 47 pts. per game while giving up only 23.

Lufkin usually schemes pretty well against a feature back. Mobile, smart qb's that can run, option or pass are the teams that are tougher for the Pack - such as D. SHorts with HHeights.
I think Lufkin's passing game will settle down. First game p.o. jitters and 30 mph winds should both be gone. If Hays has a weak secondary - it will be exposed I think. HHeights had the best tackling db's we've seen all year.
No way, however, will I predict a score.

Lufkin will win this one. No disrespect to a great hays program but they dont have the size or the speed to compete.

I'm not saying anything until after the game....with a great game last week from HH, anything could happen....not going to go out on a limb with this game...
1 loss between the two teams should make this game a good one.

For Hays to have a chance I think they need to play with Lufkin and not get behind by more than one TD. I saw Hays play against Westlake a game in which they dominated, but lost. They had a 30-14 lead with 5:30 seconds left in the game but Westlake scored 17 points to win, 31-30. Hays RB, Waters was underutilized in that game. He needs to get 20 plus carries against Lufkin for them to control the clock. He is a bruiser at 5'10" 215 lbs and a top notch linebacker as well. He will not make many defenders miss or break any long runs, but he averages nearly 10 yards per carry, because of his strength and balance. If he were 6'2" he would be one of the top linebacker prospects in the nation. He really gets to the football. I watched him play at San Antonio Madison and he earned all-district honors in the 265 while starting at inside linebacker for the Mavericks as a sophmore. His mom moved back to Hays (he was there as a freshman before moving to Madison for his sophmore and junior years) before the end of last school year. This move worked out well for Waters as there were not enough balls to go around in the Madison backfield with QB Chris Caflisch and RB Tony Green (cousin of Gary Green, Jr.). Lufkin should win, but a Hays win would not shock me.

If Favpack is right about Lufkin having problems with smart mobile QB's they will have their hands full with Nash McPheeters. Amadeus Waters is a great running back that can run over you or around you, but he is not the only running back or the only weapon. An interesting comparison between the HH QB and Hays QB:
Donnie Shorts: pass comp. 47%, 5 TD, 7 int. for 1,031 yds. - 160 rushes for 868 yds. (5.4 yrds/carry)
Nash McPheeters: pass comp. 62%, 11 TD, 1 int. for 1438 yds. - 98 rushes for 899 yds. (9.1 yrds/carry)
The Hays offense is capable of sustaining long drives and eating up the clock or scoring quickly.
Nobody outside of Hays has given them much credit so all the pressure is on Lufkin to prove the HH game was a fluke. I'm sure Lufkin will be fired up but if they key only on Amedeus, they will lose.

Let me clear a few things up, 2 teams held Amadeus to under 40 yards this season Cedar Park held him to 32, and Austin High held him to 33, we won those games 35-21 and 31-10, so no, if you stop Amadeus, you don't stop the Hays offense, such as Jamesdean said.
Mavrick #23, Amadeus does not play LB this year, like he did at Madison, strictly HB.
Yes our defense has been suspect this year, our games have usually been close in the opening quarter and then blown open in the 2nd as the defense starts to settle in and as our offense starts a string of scoring drives. I beleive at one point during the Anderson game, we scored on 6 straight posessions. Our D-Line is tough to handle and we've got a strong Linebacking corps, our DB's are shaky though, small and not very fast which could give us fits all day.
On a special teams note, we have a pretty consistant kicker in Brandon O'Dell, but he has not performed well in the clutch. He missed a FG as time expired vs. Bastrop, a game that went into 3 OT's, and he missed an Extra point vs. Westlake (hence the score 31-30). So if the wind is up and it comes down to a FG to win or tie, I hope Brandon can redeem himself for an otherwise solid kicking year.
No way i'm giving a prediction, some people may know that after we beat RR in the first round, on Friday night before the HH game, I said that Lufkin would probably blow us out. But I read the thread about the HH game and it makes me think that if your defense plays like they did vs HH then we have a very good shot. We'll see if the lufkin D will show up on saturday, because I know our offense will be ready for a battle. Just hope that we can keep your big WR's in check and run a good scheme to stop them.

I think Hays has a good team but you won't be facing a Cedar Park or Austin High across the line this week. Waters will have to have some sucess to keep Lufkin honest.
Lufkin should have plenty of practice tackling big running backs after running the scout team against Javorski last year.

I was not comparing Lufkin to either one of them, just throwing some stats out there. Amadeus goes on streaks of good and bad games, consecutive weeks of 32 151 and 33 yards, followed by 222 yards and 219 yards.

Lufkin has got to prove they belong where they are at. I have no doubt they belong there. I know Outlaw will have them ready for this game. I would feel alot better about predicting a win if they had played better against HH. No doubt HH is a good team, but I think those panthers are just better than what they showed last week. Good Luck to both teams and I hope my Panthers win. God Bless.

i haven't had a chance to get on the computer since last sat., but i must say i was not happy with the way lufkin played. this is only the second game of lufkins that i have seen this year, everybody has been saying how good they are, but i was not impressed last sat. i still love them and have complete faith that we'll win state this year!!!, but they gotta come a lot better than they did sat!

Yes, I have been quite. My confidence in the Panthers is still strong, but with my experience with playoff games, I know that if you don't play your best on that weekend you could go home. Last week was an eye opener for us all and although we did not play our best we still managed to win the game. We may have been paying too much attention to that 6-4 record of Harker Heights and were not metally prepared to play. I have faith the real Panthers will show up on Saturday, I intend to stay humble and ride low under the radar this week. Hays Consolidated will present Lufkin with the best team we have played so far this season. I think Lufkin will pull out a hard fought game by a score of 34-24. Lufkin has the speed and overall talent advantage this week and are on a mission to correct what happen last week with Harker Heights.

I seriously doubt it. We are just not as vocal as we were last week...humbled a bit ...you might say. But nevertheless ...still die hard and ready for Saturday.
I am not afraid to talk but i am not going to talk crap. Lufkin needed a wake up call obviously but i still think this team is more then capable of getting it together and going all the way. They are loaded with talent and there is no question about that. On the Lufkin defense!! They are still one of the best in the state if not the best in my opinion!! No they were not on their A game but they were solid. Some act like the defense just got rolled on but that was not the case. They gave up about 240 total yards and gave up 17 points and HH only scored 3 2nd half points. The other hh score came from their defense on a Lufkin fumble. Lufkin only gave up 90 yards rushing on 32 carries (under 3 per carry) and most of that was from qb scrambles and qb draws. Shorts was something like 12 for 30 for 160 yards. He avoided several sack's and made some nice plays but he sure did not have a field day. Lufkin's biggest problem on defense was 3rd and long and containing the very mobile qb on scrambles. Simple as that.
On this game, Consolidated puts up a lot of points but they give up a lot. Hays scores about 47 game while Lufkin's defense gives up about 11. It was 9 before last week and the defense was not responsible for all of the 24 like i said. Lufkin should be able to put up some big numbers on this Hay's defense from what i hear and Hay's should not be able put big points on Lufkin's stingy defense. My honest prediction is 48-21 Lufkin but i could be very wrong again like last week?? I have been very close in all of the other Lufkin game's (besides the HH game) when i have made predictions so hopefully i will get back on track. ;)

Lufkin has a very very good and fast defense. (Many say they are the best including this site in the preseason defensive rankings) all run a 4.7 or faster according to Coach Outlaw. They have probably 7 to 8 potential div1a recruits on this defense alone!! ( I am including the juniors obviously) The 3 biggest standouts are probably junior de AJ Penson ( should be a top recruit next year) lb Mandela Roberts (will be div1a signee) and of course cb Leonard Hewitt ( top div1a blue chip recruit) who led the state in interceptions last year and has 7 this year. He had an easy pick for a td last week but dropped it. there are many other stand outs on this defense but they are the most known of the group. Other very good players are RTaylor, Murphy, Harris, and ETaylor etc This defense is very aggressive and play almost exclusively man to man defense. This will definitely be their biggest test of the year. Should be fun to watch!!

I think the game will be simiiar to the game last year between Lufkin and SLC. I believe Hays will keep the ball away from the Lufkin offense and chew up the clock. Lufkin will be fighting to score quickly do to having little time. Penalties will negate good plays and eventually Lufkingn will become desparate to score and score often as when they do get the ball they will not have much time to work with. I see long time consuming drives for Hays and several 3 and outs for Lufkin with a couple of drives. Will go ahead and predict a 20 to 17 win for Hays.

I must have watched the wrong game. I did not see Dez do to much against HH. As a matter of fact I did not see Lufkin do to much at all. Hays you can beat these guys by playing solid football and mistake free. If you have speed it helps, HH only had D.Shorts and Lufkin keyed on him. Tell the Hays bozy Don't beleive the HYPE about Lufkin. They are NOT all that.

Dez had 5 catches for 75 yards - including yet another acrobatic one-handed grab for a TD - fairly typical game for Dez. He was open on numerous other occassions - HH gave some good pressure on several attempts that resulted in broken routes.
Trooper has no idea what he's talking about - his Dawg mask was in the way.

#19 Wes Drew #31 Karl Sontag #88 Jeff Bondi are our CB's, #89 Joesph Gaitan and #21 Erik Garcia will be playing Safties. Karl has good speed but is around 5'10", he also returns punts, and has almost taken a few to the house.
Don't underestimate our WR's either, this is the best WR corps that we've probably ever had. #84 Donnie Joseph has the heigth that most receivers have and can make some great catches, although he dropped a crucial pass on the last drive vs. westlake which would've set us up in FG range.

Hey, back to the Lufkin game this week. I know we have talked alot about Amadeus Waters (1450 yds rushing) from Hays, but I don't think we should over-look QB Nash McPheeters (900 yds rushing)( 74-119, 1428 yards passing)and WR Donnie Joseph(425 yds receiving), they have put in some decent numbers along with Waters for the Hays offense. Although Waters is the key, he is not the whole show.
The report on Waters is he left San Antonio Madison for Hays because Madison was loaded at RB. Makes you wonder, Waters is a senior, so if I am one of the better RB.s at Madison, why transfer to Hays? He transfered because someone named Tony Green ( 5'9", 170) was ahead of him at Madison.
I think the Hays defense will have match up problems all over the field with Lufkin's speed, how will they cover Bryant, Thomas, Shankle, Rains and Gordon if they don't have any speed in their secondary? The Lufkin defense will cause numerous problems for Hays. Mandella Roberts, Stewart Willis, Eric Taylor, A.J. Penson, Roger Hurts, Randall Murphy and Robert Taylor will be well known to Mr. Waters before Saturday evening.
I am still sticking to my 34-24 Lufkin win, I respect the offensive firepower of Hays, but I think they come up short on the defensive side in this game.
