And a whole bunch of you catfish ate the bait!
Why does Calpreps not rank Katy in their National power poll? Carroll is ranked #2, SV is ranked #22 and Madison is ranked #50. It's because their competition is so weak they are not scientifically worth ranking. The competition in the 265 is far superior to what Katy faces out or in district. Just look at the horrible strength of schedule below. Katy is ranked 35th in Texas with this scientific (non subjective) form of ranking. Compare that to Carroll who is ranked #1, SV #8, & Madison #13. I'm not saying Katy could not beat SV or Madison, I just would not bet on them this year. Just like Schertz Clemens (w/ or w/out J. Henry), Katy is seriously overrated and they too have been feasting on the weak. If Katy gets behind early to either SV or Madison they won't be able to catch up because they have no experience in doing so, that is exactly what happened to Clemens in bi-district.

Look at that 11.9 rating for strength of schedule! Compare that to Madison's 31.5 rating. That'll happen when you face four teams ranked outside the top 5000 in the Nation. Almost all of Madison's opposition was ranked in the top 1000, many in the top 500. Look again at Opponents' records. Katy's opposition were 44-52 on the season compared to Madison's 66-49.
As for the idiot from Katy that thinks there is not speed in the greater San Antonio area, let me inform you that San Antonio Madison QB, Chris Caflisch is probably the fastest QB in the 5a play-offs. He has been clocked in the 40yd. dash @ 4.42, and is one of the top 400m runners in the nation. I guarantee not one of the Katy Tigers' can run him down in the open field. He also has three offensive teammates that have run forty times under 4.5 seconds. Madison has been known for their team speed for many years and had they not missed an extra point in the '02 R4 final against SV (28-27), Katy would have been blown out by Madison much worse than they were by SV. That '02 Madison team would have been a better match-up against the SLC team that beat SV in the D2 final. Madison's, J. Guttierrez (Oklahoma) and G. Green, Jr (Kansas) were the best backfield duo in Texas High School football history. Also the '02 Madison team was the best three loss team ever! I guess that year's Katy team was the best four loss team because they finished right behind Madison in the power rankings.

For the curious Madison was ranked #1 in the A.P. State poll and #19 in The USA Today National Prep poll when they lost a triple OT game 59-53 to San Antonio Reagan, the next week they allowed Converse Judson to score off two turnovers and a blocked punt in the first half, before dominating the second half, though Judson would hold on and win 39-37. Of course Smithson Valley fans remember the high deep snap that forced a PAT wide left with under three minutes remaining. Then on a third and ten with just over a minute left SV got away with an all too obvious offensive pass interference as a SV receiver shoved down a Madison cornerback to be able to make a catch on a seriously under thrown deep pass. Lucky for SV, because that '02 Madison team holds the obscure record of most touchdowns in a season with less than one minute on the game clock (two in one game alone!). Had they got that call they would have got the ball back and sent SV fans home crying like Judson did to Midland High fans one week later in that very same place (the Alamodome). They lost all three games by a combined nine points.
2002 SV vs Madison all out great play by both teams. First Kickoff of the game Madison scores on a 102 KO return really took the breath out of the SV fans and all of SA remembers the non-called pass interference well at least thats what everyone but the SV fans think well nvm even some SV fans think it was pass interference :D

I'm glad you 2 posted on here because I thought if you combine you guys you have me. You combine the key elements of my personality on the board. All kinds of stats and info including plenty of calpreps references and a bunch of smarting off.
Here's my take on calpreps and it's the same every year. They can't get a good handle on the Houston teams because they only play each other. Some of them end up with crappy ratings because they lose to 4A teams. Calpreps depends on different teams playing each other to get a comparison across the board. There are 9 Houston districts and these are the only out of Gulf Coast games they played:
Cove over K Forest
A&M over Woodlands
Cy Fair over V Memorial
Cy Falls over Bryan
A&M over Ike
Lufkin games
If Tyler Lee had kept Lufkin on their schedule, you might have a better idea how good all the Houston teams were. Personally, I think most of the Houston teams are crap and they get overrated. We really don't know about North Shore and Westfield, either.
The ultimate in what Calpreps can say is that bunch of teams at the bottom of the New York rankings. The have a district that played a bunch of games against each other and nobody else and they all have crappy ratings because of it.

Difficult to argue with Katy's schedule. As it turns out Humble is the only opponent to win a playoff game. Could Katy fall this week? Oh yes, Cy-Creek has what is needed to stop Katy; a good defense, and nobody here is paying any attention to them. Everything is primed for the Tigers to take a belly flop at Tully Saturday night. Go watch the Buster Douglas - Mike Tyson fignt and tell me a determined underdog can't win.

I HIGHLY doubt anybody from R3 will beat Katy. The Tigers need to watch out for a R4 team that's a lot more battle-tested.

I would think people would know better than to underestimate an undefeated Katy team given the program's track record. However, it's never been the Tiger fans' custom to beg for respect because everyone knows that's earned on the field.
Katy's always had to get things done without the hype and fanfare other programs receive, and that's nothing new. Every Tiger team since 1997 has played with the so-called "target" and handled it pretty well.
Here are a few observations I have of this Katy team, and also address some of the items brought up in the original post.
Katy is going for its 5th state championship and eighth state championship game berth this season. The Tigers have won six Region 3 championships in the last eight years.
Sure, the competition hasn't been as strong this year but the team has no control over that. I'm more impressed with this particular Tiger team because of the way they are beating people. The offense is the most balanced there is statistically in either bracket. This is the most balanced run-pass offense to step on the Katy campus.
The defense is very experienced on the line and in the secondary. The linebackers are improving by the week. In fact, the secondary has a chance to be the best in the history of the school as far as yards allowed per game and percentage completion allowed.
QB Andy Dalton is shattering Jared Kaspar's (99-2000) record for career TD passes in a season with each new score he throws this year. Dalton has 29 TD passes through 10 games. The previous record of 22 was set over 16 games. He could pass Kaspar's record for most yards in a season this week. Junior WR Michael Fuda is setting as many receiving records as Dalton is in the passing area. However, the passing game is not limited to only those two. Sure, Katy passing records weren't exactly tough to reach (before this year) but the fact the football program has been around since 1939 and numbers like what is being seen this year have never achieved before should mean a little something.
The running game is paced by two potential game breakers in senior Brandon King and sophomore Aundre Dean. King is extremely quick and has breakaway speed to go with it. Dean is roughly 6'1, 185 pounds and I haven't seen a sophomore at Katy that's as physically gifted as he is. Dean scored his first varsity touchdown during the playoffs last year as a freshman. Throw in the patented Katy playaction game in addition to all of the interchangeable parts the Tigers have at their disposal this year, and it's very tough to handle at full strength.
I grew up in Katy and have been following Tiger football closely for a while now. I've never seen a Tiger team, save for 2000 (16-0), as well equipped to make a run at state as this one. Other successful Katy teams have played weaker schedules and haven't put up near the production, or looked as dominant as this 2005 group has shown.
Last year, Clear Lake served as a reminder of how small the margin for error is this time of year and this Tiger team is extremely determined to finish the job this season. They don't want the feeling they had walking off the field at Rice Stadium again. I think that's been a driving factor for the team all year long.
Of course, the main focus right now is on Cypress Creek. When you have the kind of playoff experience Katy does you know better than to look ahead. You don't accumulate 47 playoff wins (3rd all-time in 5A behind Judson, Permian) by overlooking people. There is no such thing as a trap game in the playoffs. If you aren't ready to play this time of year, you deserve to lose.
Katy came out and played a very motivated football game against a Clements team they could have easily coasted by. Obstacle #11 is up this week and that's all anyone here is focused on right now from what I can tell.

Thanks for all of the good information. Katy has to play who they have scheduled. Some years the district is up and some years it is down. This year 19-5A is down, but you can't fault Katy for that. Katy's out of district schedule, The Woodlands, Jersey Village, and Humble looked pretty good on paper before the season started, but as it turns out Humble is the only team out of the group that has won a playoff game. One does have to remember that all of the records that are being broken for a storied Katy program have been accomplished with the starters only playing a little over one half of football in most games. I just can't buy into to the whole speed card that most teams play. For one this is Katy's fastest team in the program's history and we all know they have won championships with less speed. I agree that Katy is not as battle tested as some of the SA teams, but I promise you that Katy is ready for the battles to come.

I'm with KT2000 on this one...it will take a helluva team to beat Katy, and I just don't see a team that good on this half of the bracket...can't really argue the schedule factor, but we beat everyone except The Woodlands and KatyTaylor in less than one half...since they have the weak schedule all you can ask for is outright dominance and that has pretty much surfaced...

Why does Calpreps not rank Katy in their National power poll? . . . .
National computer power rankings have HUGE flaws. Since there are virtually zero common opponents between high schools from different states (and even within states) the computers consistently spew flawed results.
In 2004 Calpreps completely missed Independence Charlotte in their national ranking yet six other national polls ranked them 2nd in the nation.

The way I remember it Madison barely ran Gary Green at all in the 2nd half. Whose fault is that? The way I really remember it was 28-27 SV and forget all the other bs..... Do they give a "most TD's in a season with less than one minute on the game clock"? If so you can have that one :D

Katy is better than anything coming out of San Antonio this year . As a matter of fact it won't be long and all your kids will be playing soccer.
AND you know what Westfield did to your team last year. You were there, weren't you? Guess what? Westfield had at least 13 senior starters this year.
Ask Vincent Young if Houston teams are CRAP. He would knock you into next week. Texas comes to scout here just like in mighty SAN ANTONIO. Don't let some fruit and nut, pot smokin wusses from Caly lie to you. That's what most stats are is lies.

Actually I don't think a whole lot of D1 schools do scout the San Antonio area much. They get more bang for the buck by flying to Houston renting a car and hit many D1 prospects in a very short drive.

Maverick, you mention the QB is running a 4.4... and say nobody on Katy could stop him, looks like you did some research on Katy's schedule, now how about you do research on the players. Will Thompson is running a 4.4 also and I think quite a few people on this message board would agree with me not to overlook him. When has Katy ever been the fastest team in the playoffs, or had the most D1 prospects? The secondary of Katy has proven that size doesn't matter, and speed can be tamed. The whole defence of Katy has proven they aren't to be underestimated, but then again it happens nearly every week, so everyone is intitled to their own opinion.

Houston almost always has more talent. What they don't always have is better coaching. Obviously, Katy has had great coaching over the years. I had to miss the Westfield-Judson game, but I did go to the T Lee-Westfield game the next week.
I'm not here to make any great claims, but I do want to say I think Region 3 is making a HUGE mistake dismissing Region 4 like you cats have been doing. Many Houston teams made the same mistake before. I thought I had an unbeatable team last year and we see how that turned out. The SA teams that are left are all better than you think they are.

Northshore coaches are as good as you want. Everything about that program is 1st class. Westfield has a very good coach. Pearland's coaches are strong and so is Houston Lamar's. San Antonio traditionally is in a weak region. You guys get a cake walk to regionals every year. I would put the coaching in the Houston area against anybody in the state or country for that matter. You are talking about past maybe, but not now. LaMarque in 4a is always well coached. Hell lonny this year LaMarque could beat most of the 5a schools in San Antonio, including Judson. You need to get over here more and look around. Things change. Old persceptions go away. If I had to pick the strongest region year in and year out it would be region 2. Go walk around the piney woods. Those guys can play football.

Strength of schedule didn't hurt North Shore in 2003. It won't hurt Westfield or North Shore this year.
Strength of schedule is way over-rated in high school. A team can only play the hand it was dealt and dominate the teams in that hand. I think Katy has done that this year.

In spite of the schedule Katy is loaded this year - you gotta to see to believe, they will still be playing long after any San Antonio area team.

I still dont see how SOS is a knock unless you havent been beating teams like you should...not only that we took a tie into halftime with Woodlands, who we at least thought was good then, and a 6-3 lead over taylor. basically in both games we dominated the other team...ill question katy's linebackers first and foremost, ill even question the talent level on the whole, but theres no way im going to doubt a katy teams toughness or "ready to play" - ness

Well, so much for flying under the radar.
Well said, KT.

Are there poppy fields in those hills up there, Lonny.

I was wrong about Marshall beating the jesuits but so was probably 95% of the people that picked the game. I still don't think the jesuits have anything better than an average team.
They are an average team playing with heart and well coached also.

Any team still standing in the state semi-finals fully deserves to be there and SOS is rendered a non-factor at that point. Any team that advances that far has to have passed a few tests along the way.
I really started saying that a lot last year. You can't take any team lightly in the semis.

I thought Katy had a chance to win that game against Madison. I thought Johnston should have picked the pace of play up faster. Mr. Young was the only threat and keeping him exhausted might have worked. The rest of the team had nothing - it was all Mr. Young. Katy kept slowing the pace down and it cost them because they gave Young time to recover.

Katy is a measuring stick for everyone else regardless of their schedule. Thats what happens when you win multiple championships - you become the biggest game on your opponents' schedule, all year long.
Its more than a team from year to year, Katy has built a PROGRAM.

That isn't happening in Katy! It's one game at a time, one opponent at a time. You look ahead and you forget what you have to take care of today. Big mistake. You know better than that lonny. A good program doesn't look past it's next opponent.

Exactly! Katy has bee around the block and knows any team coming out of R4 is a threat. If you are in the 5A final four in Texas, you deserve to be there, and you are good. But, I can tell you the men in red are not looking any furhter than Saturday night right now.

Who have yall played that is so great? Ill admit Judson and SA Madison are good but yall havent beat a great team yet. I respect SV their a good program and alot like Katy. THey find a way to win in he play offs without the speed and talent of other teams, but this years different, Katy has a ton of speed and talent. All im saying is this team is comparable to 00 Katy, and that team was never in danger of lossing a game. I honestly dont think katy will have a close one this year.

I am NOT talking about this year, but in 2003, it actually got easier once Northshore got to the semis. I believe the score was 52-0 against Westlake.
Lonny, if you did not see that game you missed Northshore at it's finest.
Houston Lamar gave Northshore the best game that year. It was a struggle. The semis and the state final were easier. This is not meant to disrespect Westlake or The Woodlands. It was just a fact for that year. If Westfield beats Northshore this friday I believe they will roll the region 4 team. O'Connor-3 losses, Converse-4 losses, LaJoya-2 losses, Harlingen-2 losses. Westfield -1 loss in two years, Northshore-1 loss in three years
I don't know about Division 2. I am only talking about Division 1.

Under Johnston, it didn't matter too much who Katy played because you pretty well knew they would get better as they went along and be hard to beat in the playoffs. That may be true for Joseph, but I can't say that yet.

Define 'war tested'.
Are you only 'war tested' if you won a few games by 1 or 2 points OR lost in a nail biter?
Your war tested when you play contenders, that get you ready for the real season,"the playoffs."Weak teams can be in nail biters against each other,it`s not the score,it`s the competition. When SV lost to Judson last year, they realized they would have to play at a much higher level, and they did.And it made them a better team ,in the long run.If judson did`nt beat us in the playoff atmosphere that it was, i dont think SV would have had the mind set, that they had to be in the Final. We all know how close SV came to beating the #1 team in nation.

Make sure you and the rest of the Houston fans read this:
1. I respect Katy, North Shore, and Westfield. Respect does not mean I think you'll win every game. Many people confuse thinking you might lose a game as disrespect. I've spent more time saying good stuff about Katy than every other team in Houston combined. I really appreciate what they've done and how they run the program.
2. I'm in Region 4 and I like our teams. I have nothing against your teams. I'm going to joke around and talk a little trash. Anybody that gets upset at what I've said about Region 3 this year has a maturity/personal relations problem. I didn't get mad when everybody started saying Region 3 was going to blow away Region 4 and there's no reason to be mad at me over Region 4. All you have to do is wait for 2-3 more weeks and see how R3 does against R4.
3. I have to take up for my team. Many people read this website and I can't sit here and let everybody place doubt in Judson's mind. I want them to believe they'll win every game they play.

You just might get your wish. Those second chance teams can be pretty dangerous. Losses don't hurt in the regular season as much as some believe. Read the post from the SV fan that was thanking the Rockets for beating them last year. I haven't been too confident in the Rockets this year, but the last few games have brought back a lot of memories. The first one that comes to mind is enthusiasm. They seem to be playing with a lot of heart now. If they lose this week or next week it won't have any affect on tommorrow for me or any other fan as long as they play with all they have. You can't ask for anymore than that. Even though we lost to Westfield last year, the team never gave up. That was very inspiring and that is what has been missing most of this year. I think a lot of people get the wrong idea about how we back our team. Losses are not the end of the world. It's how you lose that affects how we judge the team.

You said that very well, Bullrock. I want effort and wins, but the effort is more important than winning. Sometimes your best isn't good enough, but you owe it to the fans and your teammates to give your best.
Like Katy, Judson is a PROGRAM and a measuring stick game for every other team every year. The Rockets don't have to play the #1 SOS in order for other teams and coaches to know how good they are from year to year.
As far as this whole Reg. 3 v. Reg. 4 thing goes, I think most of us realize that the cream of both regions match up pretty well every year. However, there have been years where one or the other dominates at the semi-final round. This year, I like Region 3's chances to sweep convincingly.
bullrock
11-17-2005, 10:40 AM
Truely spoken Nate. The last sentence might be a little subjective, however. We in Reg. IV might have the opposite opinion. I would think Div I would be more apt to lose (to Reg III), on paper that is, than Div II. I don't know much about any of the teams from Houston except what I've read on this board and I'm sure the same can be said of the other side. It's hard to know how these teams will match-up when they actually meet. If we're fortunate enough to play in the match-up I will be tickled to death.

Rock you think that there is a better chance of R4 DI beating R3 DI than R3 DII beating R4 DII?
I think you have that backwards. He thinks it more likely that Reg. 4 takes the DII semi-final than they take the DI game.

No Flee, you have it backwards. If you look at the win/loss records alone, I would say that The DI rep from Reg IV should lose to the DI rep from Reg III. I think looking at the records in the other bracket it would be hard to tell.
Maybe my ole Rockets can slip up on some of these teams this year like Tyler did last year.

Well SVite, as soon as your team actually wins a title, they will get the respect other teams get and the recognition as a benchmark program and game for all of their opponents, year in and year out.
You see, history can teach you a few things. It can enlighten those like you to the fact that a year-to-year strength of schedule factor is really pointless in Texas HS Football. Several top programs have reached a level and know what it will take to win it all - regardless of the schedule they play.
