I know some of you fine folks will know the answer to this: when High School teams play at venues such as Texas Stadium or in a College stadium do they change the goal post (since they are wider for high schools)?

I think you mean the opening is narrower for the college and pro teams right? At Shotwell Stadium in Abilene they have an attachment that turns in or out depending on who is playing, high school teams are ACU.

Have to as Goal post measurements for High School are 10 feet high and 23 feet 4 inches wide and for College & NFL Goal posts are 10 feet high and 18 feet, 6 inches wide.

I thought they were the same for high school and college. Just narrower for the pros.

In the Astrodome they would use the same goals for UH and the hi schools(short and white), and switch for the Oilers(tall, narrow, and yellow).

There is definitely a difference from level to level. Many people think the sticks are just taller in college, making it look narrower, but they are for sure about two yards narrower in college.

I think sometime since the demise of Luv ya Blue, the colleges went with the pro goalpost dimensions.

They are supposed to go with the wider goalposts for high school games, but upon agreement by the two coaches, narrower goalposts can be used.

HS games at Reliant Stadium in the past couple of years have utilized the narrower goalposts because, I believe, Reliant Park has not invested in the HS version.

If Texas HS uses NCAA rules, do they use NCAA width goal posts?

There are a handful of rules that some refer to hybrid, where Texas uses a high school rule instead of NCAA. Most have to do with timing and parameters. Kicking off from the 40 and not the 35, timing of quarters, etc. I think there are some 8-9 specific things like that but there could be more.

Ya... We also use the old NCAA play clock rules instead of the 40 second clock thats used now... (along with what u mentioned and the wider goal posts)...

To restate what some of you have said:

NFL rules (2006)

Section 3 Goal
Crossbar
In the plane of each end line there shall be a centrally placed horizontal Crossbar 18 feet 6 inches in length, the top face of which is 10 feet above the ground. The goal is the vertical plane extending indefinitely above the crossbar and between the lines indicated by the outer edges of the goal posts.
Goal Posts
All goal posts will be the single-standard type, offset from the end line and bright gold in color. The uprights will extend 30 feet above the crossbar and will be no less than 3 inches and no more than 4 inches in diameter. An orange-colored ribbon 4 inches by 42 inches is to be attached to the top of each post.
Note: Goal posts must be padded in a manner prescribed by the league.

NCAA rules (2008)

Goals
ARTICLE 5.
a. Each goal shall consist of two white or yellow uprights extending at least 30 feet above the ground with a connecting white or yellow horizontal crossbar, the top of which is 10 feet above the ground. The inside of the uprights and crossbar shall be in the same vertical plane as the inside edge of the end line.
b. Above the crossbar, the uprights shall be white or yellow and 18 feet, six inches apart inside to inside.

UIL exceptions to NCAA rules (2008)

1-2-5-a Add: “In UIL games 30 foot uprights are recommended, 20 foot uprights are mandatory.”
1-2-5-b Change to read: “Above the crossbar the uprights shall be white or yellow and 23 feet 4 inches apart inside to inside. (EXCEPTION: When UIL schools are playing on collegiate fields with 18 feet 6 inches goal posts, and 23 feet 4 inches goal posts are not available, the collegiate goal posts may be used by mutual agreement of the competing schools.)”

Also there are 41 UIL exceptions to NCAA 2008 rules plus changes to the NCAA Tiebreaker System.

If I am not mistaken --- Huntsville High has played at Bower Stadium ( Sam Houston State ) for years and the goal posts have not been changed out for the HS teams

Years ago TWH was playing Huntsville --- during the warm-ups the Higlander kicker realized that the goal posts were narrower. He asked Coach Willig why he wasnt told before the game -- Willig answered -- " why -- you still have to kick the ball thru the uprights no matter how narrow just like the Huntsville kicker "

point is --it might happen anytime you play on a college or pro field --- but it is the same width for both teams

The goalposts on the practice field at Cove are college-sized. Our kickers learn to kick through the narrower college sized posts.

That is Jack Welch for you, Cove just keeps getting it done! The College Goal Post actually cost less.
