I have to give credit when it is due, even to journalists. This morning's edition of the Dallas Morning News features two articles that sum up the Cowboys perfectly, especially as it applies to yesterday's uninspired effort. First up, the offensive game plan. On our way to coronating Garret as the next, head coach we should tap the brakes whenever necessary. He did this against Philly at home last year and the second half of the Giants playoff game. You have to run the ball in this league, period. For a team with to have 11 rushing attempts is pathetic. For T.O. to have more carries than Felix Jones is sickening. 8 carries for Barber? Really? Most of the second half we ere only down six. Do you really have to pass your way out of a one score deficit? For the most part Garret is very good, sometimes brilliant. These kind of mental lapses, if an entire game plan qualifies as a lapse, are unacceptable. The mistake was too rudimentary. The next article, from Sherrington, flat calls out a star studded defense and labels it, appropiately, average. Too many draft picks and too much money have been spent here for us to be incapable of getting a stop, creating a turnover or being ably to simply count to 11. This secondary is quite possibly the most talented group of incompetents ever assembled, even without Roy on the field. Speaking of which, he has to be smiling. See, Dallas, we get torched for 50 yard gains with or without Roy. For the same reasons I rip on Garret, who is a one side of the ball coach, I have to rip on Wade. It may be time for him to admit that Stewart is not a coordinator in this league. The talent may be a bit overestimated but the execution of an effective game plan is not beyond them. Furthermore, where's the motivation or appeal to pride or just an old fashion cussing? Anyway, if you get a chance take a look. There both honest reads.

Thats a pretty tough assesment and really unnecessary criticism. Last week, the Cowboys were the greatest thing since shirt pockets, and could do no wrong. :D

I hate shirt pockets..they get lint balls in em and make you look like some alien with six nipples...But if the Cows defense doesn't start playing some respectable football the team will be watching the playoffs after the first week again...

If Wade Phillips is a defensive genius, Jeff Fisher is an offensive genius. Not bad D yesterday, but certainly nothing to hang your hat on. Washington had tons of scoring drives.

As far as the numbers go, the only game that it seems the Dallas D struggled so far was against Philly. And this was the first game all season that the Cowboys didnt lead in time of possession.

and the 3 and outs by the offense really helped the defense in the second half...
I stand by my assessment- adequate defense, even while being put in terrible position and no rest. The very fact that Dallas was even in that game is a huge credit to the Cowboys' defense!
Terrible offensive play calling in the second half.

As I said in another thread, they couldn't run the ball against the Eagles in the first half, but yet, when the second half came, they ran the ball great. They were down by 6 to Philly just like they were down by, 3, and 6 against the 'Skins yesterday. And, the 'Skins were dropping atleast 6 back to pass...where is the delay draw plays that we ran against the Packers last week?

if you can't run, you can't control the clock. If you don't control the clock, the defense is on the field too long. Pretty simple stuff for such highly paid people. I guess if they get fired, they can always run for office. ;)

Well, I call it like I see it. Garrett got enamored with his passing game yesterday, period. Things change week to week in this league. The simple things bother me. It is very simple to recognize 11 carries will not cut it. Simpler still to know Felix should have more rushing attempts than TO. As for the defense, can we please not give up 50 yard plays? At least not of the wide open variety. Don't we have a 100 million dollar secondary? If your offense scores 24 points inspite of it's game plan, is it too much to ask to hold the opponent to less than that? Losing when you have left it all on the field hurts but it happens. It can be dealt with. Losing like they did yesterday is infuriating and unacceptable. This is a team that aspires to be hiosting a trophy over their heads in Tampa. More has to be expected.

I agree with you. Thats why I mentioned the time of possession in the other post. Why they abandoned the running game is beyond me.

Will not argue the game plan and not just the second half. Is it too much to ask for the defense to win a game for us, though? The depth on that unit should more than allow for an extended stay on the field. This offense has been consistently explosive and capable of winning games, even when things don't go right. Can the D, just once, help out on a day when things are going right or the game plan is flawed? I do not believe that too much to ask.

The reasoning after the fact is as flawed as the play calls were during the game. There is no excuse. This game was not a blowout. We were not down 14,17,21 points. That is when teams abandon the rush. The deficit was 6 for almost the entire second half, 1 score. The yards per carry was decent. Even if it weren't, after only 11 carries you cannot say that the run game was shutdown. That's simply not enough evidence to base a decision. Bet that coverage would have softened up if Barber was gashing and Jones ripping. Jones.....tell me again how a kid that works hard, produces to the tune of a td a game and has been utterly electric gets no touches? NONE?!? Not a pass. Not a run. Not a reverse. Nothing. Garret blew this one. Wade blew it by not telling his coordinator that this game plan lost two critical games for us last season.

I woud submit that the defense played well enough to win the game. Running that offense with one hand tied behind its back is what killed both sides of the ball. It also put too much pressure on the defense as far as playing so much in the second half. they didn't look tired or worn out to me. They were still getting after Campbell and the Skins were not running the ball well in second half.
I recognize the defense has to win some games, but I don't want to become the Chicago Bears!
We had a Humvee in the garage and tried to win a hill climbing contest with a freaking Volkswagon Jetta.

Me neither, my friend. I'd like to see this incredible talent dominate, though. At the very least, can we cut out the gimmes from yesterday?:D I still think this team wins the division. I'm not ready to say the same about Washington, if for no other reason than the NFL will not allow the entire division into the playoffs.
Dallas' defense stinks, period. If your defense can not get the ball back for your offense, then your offense will not be productive, no matter how explosive. I have been saying this all year long. When I watched Cleveland move the ball on them, that was my first clue. The fact that Washington had the ball for like 7 minutes on that last drive, in inexcusable.
The 3-4 stinks, unless you have TWO DeMarcus Wares, and REAL good DBs. Dallas has neither. Even as a run defense, you are allowing the Oline to run down hill against you, before contact.

I believe Portis got most of his yards in the second half I believe.

Jim Rome's opening monologue today sounded as if he read it right off of my first take of the Cowboys' loss. He bashed TO for being a me first player, crying for the ball when he has thrown to or handed the ball on 20 of 58 plays yesterday. he also called out Garrett and Bum Jr for not having the cajones to keep from caving to the one man team wrecker.
I have supported TO for his play and I'm not going to back away from that. What he said yesterday about getting the ball though just proves he's like any other great receiver. Michael Irvin was open on every freaking play, and he constantly reminded Troy about it:rolleyes:. I want TO to want the ball that much, but he's got to quit drop[ping the ball and he's got to cut out the crying to the press.
Marion Barber is the one that should be justifyably pissed today.
Got it wrong the day of and got it right the day after....

you are correct, more than 70 of his 121 yards including a 31 yarder.
I guess i was so pissed about Barber and Jones not getting the ball, I didn't pay real close attention to the Skins' play selection.

Wow...didn't notice I said "i believe" at the beginning and end....I look like a ****** now. (EDIT: I didn't know that was bleeped out now...how is doosh all that bad?)
I forget who it was, but it was on ESPN said that the more you run the ball with TO the more carries you take away from barber. Course you can really count the one where he motioned into the RB slot but I wouldn't count the end around.
I think Dallas got pass happy because Romo can throw it. That's how I figured you all would have won.
