There's a pretty big thread (http://www.5atexasfootball.com/forum/vB/showthread.php?t=33645) going on about Cypress Bay which I haven't found the time to sit and read yet. Based on this year's Katy team, and what we know about Cypress Bay, who wins this game? I won't make the poll specific to score predictions, but if you've got one give it here.

I've seen Cypress Bay play twice this year so far (Boyd Anderson & Western) which Cy-Bay won both games.
I'll give you my insite about Cypress Bay.
Right now in the South Florida area (Dade Co & Broward) area they're ranked #3rd.
South Florida Polls (Dade/Broward)
#1- St.Thomas Aquinas
#2- Deerfield Beach
#3- Cypress Bay
State of Florida Polls- Class 6A
#5- Cypress Bay
Cypress Bay has at least 5 Seniors that are D-1A prospects.
RB- Jason Douglass - (5-8, 175, 4.5)
LB- Shane Gordon - (6-2, 220, 4.6)
LB- Austin Gamble - (6-0, 220, 4.6)
LB- Phil Walker - (6-1,210, 4.6)
DB- Carl Miles - (5-10, 170, 4.5)
I would say they also have a few Juniors that are D-1A prospects with a couple of the O-line guys.
Cypress Bay runs a Wing-T offense and they run the ball 98% of the time. I would say they average about 4 or 5 throws a game just to mostly keep you honest. Most of the throws go to the TE out in the flats from what I've seen.
They also try to overload one side everynow and then with an extra OT & HB and try to sweep it around the edge trying to out number you.
On defense they been running a 3-3-5 look in the games I've seen. But, they've been brining a lot of blitz package looks with that.
They dont have a lot of "depth" (IMO) because every game I've seen the defense 1st team never gets rotated unless it was like the Western game where they had "backups" in the game starting the 2nd half.

Florida Football Mag (Florida's version of Texas Dave Campbells) rates Cypress Bay linebacker tandem the #1unit in the State of Florida this year and Cypress Bay's O-line the #2 unit right behind St.Thomas Aquinas.

Also, Cypress Bay's RB-Jason Douglas has (40 car- 336 yds- 4tds) in three games. So, he is averaging 8.4 yard/carry.
He would also probably have about 100 more yards but he didnt play the 2nd half against Western last week.
They do have another RB that is built very similiar as Jason Douglass that had over a 100 yards against Western backing up Douglass. He good but not as good as Douglass.

Cypress Bay is a good team with an outstanding coach and a fair amount of top D1 talent, but I'm not sure that they will win this one.
Katy clearly is not the Katy of last year, but Cypress has shown that the current team they have has only been capable of being a 2nd round playoff loser. The team is a year older and has that much more time with the system, but they haven't played up to the level that one would expect with the talent that they have.
Their O-line is Texas styled, big, nasty, and will maul you in the run game. Douglas (RB) will not be touched if he can get into the open field and the linebackers will be all over the field.
The main issue is whether the Katy O-line will create enough of a push to make those 3 D1 backers have to do more than they are assigned to do. The CB D-line isnt to strong (outside LB Walker now lines up as a D-End as well) and could cost them.
I picked Katy to win but I hope CB will come out with a win.
Much of my hesitation to pick CB as the winner comes from too many years of seeing them under old leadership which will be enough to explain that hesitation to anyone from the Broward area.

I dont know about the second round? Its been a llllllllloooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnggggg time since they lost that early, and region three D2 is down this year. Even more so than usual.
Actually i think 01' might have lost to Vy in 01'. This team has alot more talent than 01'.

I think Katy played horrible football today. Katy might not even make the playoffs if they continue playing like they did today. There defense played an ok game....that was the only positive thing from the Tigers. I thought Webber was supposed to be the real deal...I liked Jefferies running the ball...he's a better athlete than Webber.....If Dean or Aston played against this Marcus team today they would of had well over 200yds rushing...The passing game was terrible....they did get a win barely....but Katy is not a contender...by no means they are.
Marcus will win. 28-14. Katy just isn't clicking.

It is an arranged match-up that fit the scheduling of both schools. Cypress Bay is one of the top ranked teams in the Broward-Dade area at the moment. They are currently in the AP Florida Class 6A Top 10. They aren't known as a state power, but they have a very good coach who is trying to build the program to that level.
Why is Katy playing a non-state power team?
Not sure you can call Cy-Bay a power....school hasn't been open that long and last year was their best year 10-2 I think.

Well he always has something negative to say about Katy which is fine, but I thought I remember someone saying he we from the Cy Fair district. Just makes sense that it would be Creek since they were the last Fair team to get handled by Katy.

Cypress Bay coach Mark Guandolo knows the kinds of elements his Lighting will face this weekend when it plays its first game outside of Florida.
Guandolo took Southridge and Chaminade on the road twice during his stints there as a coach.
This game will have added pressure being on national tv on Espnu.
The Lightning have the looks of Coach Guandolos tough teams of old with Linebackers Gordon, Gamble and Walker Jr.
But the offense gives Cypress Bay balance. Cy-Bay's offense is averaging 34 points per game behind the strong running of Jason Douglas (41 carries-334 yards- 4 tds), David McKnight & Craig Dee. The Lightning already have beaten some of Browards top teams in Dillard and Boyd Anderson.
Katy has traditionally been one of Texas best state programs, winning five state titles. But this seems to be the right season for Cy-Bay to catch Katy, which already has a 47-0 loss this year.
Guandolo teams move to 3-2 all time on the road after this game.

This game shouldnt even be close. I mean Florida is a much better HS football State then Texas , so it should be Cypress Bay in a pretty big blowout.;)

I can tell you acouple of things. Ray is not a good Quarterback. His passing yards are a joke. Webber is so over-rated. I bet Dean is laughing. Katy's offense will kill there playoff run.

Ray is getting better and his stats would be much better if his receivers will catch the ball. If you hit receivers in the hands and numbers and they drop the ball it's not fair to then point the finger at the QB's stats. The OL is getting a bit better and...you're baiting and I took it.

Hmm do you remember Ben Johnson from 03', Started slow. Oh and Webber has steadily improved through the games. You have to remember he hasnt played in over a year. But if you saw the oak ridge game you would have seen the depth they have at running back. There offense will be pretty explosive when the o-line gets it together. The talent is there.

Here is one big "FACT" for you Cane. Every Florida Poll has Cypress Bay ranked #5th in Florida 6A which is way ahead of the Woodlands at 11th in Texas 5A.:eek:

With that said, they should still be able to slip by Katy with a 27-22 or 24-20 type of score.
2009 season will see MNW freakish again though, along with the rest of Dade county, Broward 6A needs to seize the opportunity now and take the title while they have the chance. DB, Cypress, Miramar need to get on a run if we want to upstage Dade for the first time in...years...years.

I agree. Even though Katy is down a notch or two this year, they could easily go into the playoffs and get to the regional championship, if not the semi's. Let's face it, there are very few teams in Region 3 that are strong enough or consistent enough to knock Katy out early.

Cane- Florida schools have been wanting these games! Don't act like there is long history of this. The first darn time you brought in 3 good OOS teams to play against the best S. Florida has they all got beat. Also, history shows that many schools from out of state have traveled into Florida.
All these games this year between FL schools vs OOS teams, has only confirmed to me that the Florida depth of quality teams is not that great.
If Cy-Bay gets beat by this Katy team that has already been defeated 47-0 it will be too funny. You Florida people are already in shock with all the defeats this year against OOS comp. This may cause a total melt down in South Florida.

Canes, Katy runs a pro-style offense. It seems like most teams these days either run a spread or some kind of option. Is there anyone Cypress Bay would have seen that'd prepare them for that kind of offense? Granted, Katy isn't firing on all cylinders right now but the pieces look like they are starting to improve. It takes Katy a while to get everything down because it is a diverse, West Coast style offense.
I can tell you Katy's seen the Wing T several times over the years and played a flexbone team last week. North Shore, Marcus and The Woodlands all had very big offensive lines. North Shore and Marcus were teams that liked to pound the football. Neither one had great success against Katy's defense. North Shore scored 10 and Marcus scored 14.

Apopka - hasn't played for state title in 7 years
vs.
South Panola - 80 straight wins, 5 straight state titles
Lincoln - hasn't played for state title in 7 years
vs.
Byrnes - 19 straight wins, 5 state titles in 6 years
And the Poly, Hamilton, Olive Branch and Colorado games were our preseason week. Nobody else is expected to play 11 competitive games....except us.
And those Colorado teams played the most mediocre group of teams I've ever seen.

I would say the practice time for these teams were fairly even coming into the game. Oh, did you forget these team traveled into your backyard and took 2 of the games with little problem. When did Florida Schools Start Practice? Texas 5A schools started on Aug 11th and we played games starting on the same labor day weekend that your boys got smoked in Miami.
The games in Miami were basically created to show case the great talent in South Florida. I have not seen a team this year in Florida that is half the team MNW was last year!!

He isnt making excusues, just stating facts. The Florida high school football season started September 1, 2008. Anything before that was unofficial in Florida. The OOS games that did count before Sept. 1 had those teams drop a game from their already completed 10 game Regular season schedule as Aquinas did by dropiing their non-district opponent Everglades.
Those teams got smoked for various reasons anyway:
1. MNW just flat out could not replace everyone. Graduate 8 guys to Miami and another couple to USF and see what you get. Answer: look at what happened to Katy. Poly is just better, simple. MNW now has a new QB who will have them back on the road to a possible title run.
2. Booker T. - Same as MNW. They sent about 12 guys to D1 schools, its just too much to restock for a public school that has to share talent with numerous other schools all within a few miles of them. Their QB, Moise, only played a half of that game as well. Had he not been injured they more than likely still lose but the game becomes a shootout instead. Maybe a 42-37 type of score instead of the actual result.
3. Pahokee- Well, that was just a joke. Thompson obviously thought it to be a preseason game as his team went up 47-20 by the end of the third. They (OB) put 14 up on 2nd and 3rd stringers and recovered a fumble by the 3rd string runningback on a kickoff. The Pahokee 1st offense was back in for the final series and nearly pulled it out.
The reason you haven't seen a team that was half of Northwestern last year is because there isnt one. That team was a once every 50 years type of team, one where 4-5 guys from the 08-09 classes will most likely play in the NFL. (Forston, Spence, their JR. DT who is a beast, possibly Harris, Aldarius Johnson, maybe more)
Nobody will deny that Florida is in a down year this year. Booker T, MNW, and all of the top schools from last year have seen a drop-off except for St. Thomas (we all know why, no reason to start that up).
6A specifically is down to the point that a Broward school may have the best chance at the title, ecspecially if Deerfield Beach beats St. Thomas (again) then they will be favored.
The power teams this year are in 5A and 4A: St. Thomas, Lakeland looks good, 2A Madison County hasn't played enough yet but half their roster will be going to FSU, Plant has Aaron Murray (but no O-line), and I know alot of you didn't think much of Armwood and I myself don't believe that they're the 2nd best team in the country as they were recently ranked, but I know that they do have a top 5 national defense. That D is special and would shut out any team you put against them. Any team.
If all you have to hang the "Florida is crap" line on is the Aug. 31 rule mandated pre season games then you have nothing.
CB may lose, NMB most likely falls to John Curtis, a very down Booker T. already fell to a Georgia team, and Pahokee should keep it close with Byrnes. - At least we send our top teams OOS even when they are shells of their former selves from last season. Apopka, geez, don't even go there.

Downsouth or Canes if you see this -- didn't the FHSAA used to have a limit on the number of OOS games with non-bordering states a few years ago (I think it was 1 game)? When I saw that Polk has this restriction a few months ago it made me think I had seen that sometime in the past.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them in a regional final with the current lineup, they're very young and they will for sure be back next year.
We will learn alot about Lakeland once they play Killian. Killian looks to be back, and I'm willing to give Lakeland a pass on the BA game, they still managed a win despite playing equally as awful as BA did. I never gave that Pitt. team much credit either, they graduated alot of player's from last year's title team and they're slow...very slow. Lakeland is young though and will be right there with STA next year for the 5A title and may have a 1 out of 5 shot this year at beating STA since they have a great history of close matchups.
Cypress is one of the teams that I follow but I honestly don't think they will be able to stop that Miramar offense, I hope they study the game tape from last year's Miaramar-STA game closely, that will prove pivotal if they just steal tha STA gameplan and execute it enough to hold Miramar below 30.
CB will win easy if they can get Douglas going with the running game and keep smith on the bench, but this game essentially is for the district title and Miramar will not go down easy. Nobody gives Miramar enough credit, while they all forget that Eugene Smith based on ability is a Top 25 QB in the country...but is a bonehead who has not shown that he is mature enough to be THE MAN like Jacory Harris was (I still would tell anyone that Eugene is much more dynamic than Harris, but Harris is as smart as they come).
NMB is about right, they're #10 out of only Miami and Broward...looks okay to me, I still doubt they beat John Curtis.

Last year Longview was about #27th overall in Texas and they beat John Curtis. It was a tough game and came down to the final minutes.
But Longview was about #27th in Texas (overall) and John Curtis was a legit top (#3) Louisiana team.

I guess Katy has done very well against the run this year. GPNS had athletes and Katy held their own, plus Katy is at home. We will see what happens, but I think the Oline will be better this week with another week of practice under their belt. If Katy executes, they should be able to control the clock and that will be important, imo, on Saturday.

I would not be surprised to see that score in favor of Katy though.
Hopefully, the CB O-line does what they always do, act like a Texas O-line and eat up the Katy D-line and backers. If they take the line of scrimmage early then Jason Douglas will be near impossible to catch once he make it to the second and third levels of the defense.
I'll just give Katy the advantage for their O-line over the CB D-line but watch out for Shane Gordon who will be coming hard wherever the ball goes. Walker and Gamble are very good as well, they have 2 corners that are above average that can both make plays with the ball in the air.
The main key to the game: For Cypress, establish Jason Douglas. Simple
For Katy: Shut down Jason Douglas.

That's analysis that I like to read right there. Good post.
In the past, I would have given the Katy O-Line the advantage over anyone. But this season, the Oline has struggled quite a bit.

It changes from situation to situation.
You may see 3 down lineman with Walker the outside linebacker lining up as a D-End to make 4. You may see 3 down lineman with Gordon on a timed Blitz up the middle or you could see 4 linebackers with a crept up center fielder that sits in the middle as Gordon comes hard up the middle again.
They are in their 1st year under this D coordinator (came over from Western) as Guandolo's longtime guy went to Miami Killian after last season. That could prove to be a big loss when CB goes against Miramar in a week. Had these two seemingly evenly matched teams played last year I would have been able to say alot more but that is what I've seen from them this year from a limited amount of tape.

The DB's are decent, but they don't have a true safety.
More like a bunch of natural corners filling up the secondary.
They haven't really played any teams that would throw the ball enough to fully explain. They got GASHED by Trabis Ward of Dillard in their opener, but still won by 15 or so. Ward is a player that will sign with a D1 school, and he usually come from the I formation on his runs.
But yes, Boyd Anderson did throw for about 140 yards with their dual threat QB, but they have ZERO discipline or gameplan, just a ton of athletes. This explains CB pretty well as a whole...http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/highschool/football/broward/sfl-flspboydfoot13sbsep13,0,2903467.story
Their game against cross town rival Western is moot as they just suck, no other way to dress that one up.
Dillard and BA throw a ton of athletes out there and wait to break big plays.
Essentially, CB will be playing the closest thing they've seen to themselves. Just picture Katy in Navy blue with Gold and with more speed at linebacker and tailback, just with a wing-T.

Last year Longview was about #27th overall in Texas and they beat John Curtis. It was a tough game and came down to the final minutes.
But Longview was about #27th in Texas (overall) and John Curtis was a legit top (#3) Louisiana team.

I believe this very fine site(5A Texas Football) had Longview #8 or #9 in their final 5A poll last year...Which makes perfect sense since Longview went 4 deep in the 5A playoffs...

This is def something that Canes would know about, possibly some of the people over at Fla Varsity as well that are very well versed with this.
I remember seeing a thread on this I think on Fla Varsity about this but I may be wrong as I usually only read these forumns and don't often post so it may have been over on the Florida Scout board. Michael L over at FlaVarsity would know better than anyone though.
DownSouth, I think I found it in the FHSAA Football Manual:
"201.01 Eligibility.
(1) Participation in the state series is voluntary and open to any full member senior high school varsity team provided:
(a) The school successfully sponsors a varsity program in the previous school year;
(b) The school’s varsity team competes in a minimum of four (4) regular season varsity contests or the necessary district contests, whichever is greater, during the current season;
(c) The school files a commitment to participate in the state series with the FHSAA Office by the specified deadline;
(d) A school must play not less than 60 percent of its regular season contests in the sport against FHSAA member schools; and
(e) A school must not take more than one trip per school year in the sport beyond the neighboring states of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.
(2) A school shall enter only one (1) team.
(3) A first-time member senior high school shall not be eligible to enter a team
into the FHSAA State Series in any sport in its two years of provisional membership, unless the school is created from the consolidation or division of existing member high schools and remains under the control of the same governing board. A continuing member school that is starting a new program or resuming a previously discontinued program shall not be eligible to enter a team into the state series until the school successfully sponsors a varsity program for a minimum of one school year."
Interesting that they consider Mississippi a neighboring state. This also must mean Polk County's rule is more restrictive since Lakeland had to back out of SP game because of their other OOS game.

Raul is very good, but I don't know about a game winning field goal from 50 yards. One thing I haven't heard much about though is special teams. Katy is usually very disciplined in this area and the few mistakes they've made this year on special teams were very correctible and have probably been dealt with by now. I would like to know if anyone has any insight into CB's special teams. This could be a deciding factor come tomorrow.

Two things.
1) Northwestern already had 10 games scheduled. Win or lose their record would have been 0-0.
2) The OOS teams knew of the circumstances.

Here's how I put it on another board.
I understand the rule regarding games not counting before September 1st in Florida and the games not counting for Pahokee, MNW, and BTW in Florida. However while those teams did sign a contract to play kickoff classics on their end on the other half of the equation Poly, Olive Branch, and Hamilton(I got that confirmed) did sign to play the first of their 10 games on the season that count. So in Florida by rule the games are not recognized as counting, however that is not the case outside of the state of Florida. Even Micheal Langston publisher of Flavarsity agrees with that perspective http://flavarsity.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?F...p;TID=115915103 . So again those games do not count BUT only in Florida, NOT everywhere else.
I think the best solution is it counting on Poly's, OB's, and Hamilton's records and not MNW's, BTW's, and Hamilton's according to the contract. But I actually don't think it's ridiculous for someone to count it as a loss for the Florida teams record on the principal that for every determined winner there is a loser. But again, I think the first approach I mentioned is the better approach as it's true to the contract both parties signed and a fair compromise. But I think everyone can agree this "event" probably was better off not taking place under those circumstances.
Personally I'm not sure those should be classified as games or kickoff classics, but actually some other mess. It may be unprecedented in football where one team travels to play a game and the other team is playing a scrimmage. Long story short these...contests were kickoff classics for the Florida teams but they were NOT for the out of state teams who were playing the first of their TEN regular season games.

That's true..BUT, at this point I'm just about burnt out on these OOS games-especially with Florida...Man, so much red tape and BS to handle...Hell, you win an OOS game you gotta hear every excuse in the book..Same with a loss...

Never on the Florida end was it promoted as regular season openers as the season could not begin until the next day anyway, unless like Aquinas and Lakeland they obtain a waiver from the FHSAA and drop a regular season game from what had been an already completed 10 game schedule.

I understand completely what the FHSAA says, but as to not promoting as a regular game .... there were many Florida newspaper articles (both print and on the internet) that failed to mention the game would not count. IMO, the absence of such information or disclaimer indicates a "real" game was being promoted. Just my opinion (I know the Mississippi league recognized the win for Olive Branch; what about in the California for LB?)

I had entirely forgotten about that game.
Very good point, that also makes the point why the other OOS teams were down for the games.
After NMB beat Da West 25-0 in the preseason they became the favorites for the 6A title (before we all realized that MNW had a long waaaaay back and that we should not have expected them to be the team of last year) and built up alot of recognition in the area.
If NMB doesn't beat Da West in the preseason then there is no way they get that game with John Curtis.

Just to clarify, CB is #12 and as a CB fan I'd say that's a bit too high until they prove they can beat a team on a level such as the one they're ranked on.
There are 7-8 teams ranked below them that would give them all they could handle based on what CB has shown this year, and I doubt Katy is as bad as that 47-0 loss they had in what? Their opener?
CB has the #12 spot based mostly off of the respect that Coach Guandolo has earned and where he will have Cypress eventually. Give them 2 years and they will be the best that 6A has to offer, right now though I think #12 is a bit too high for them.
If they take out Miramar in their next game, then not only will I be very happy but it would also confirm that they are legit. Until then...

I'll tell you right now that most of us won't be spinning a win against Katy like that. The local media might, but anyone seriously interested in the matchup knows not to take too much away from this, we get that Katy is in a cycle year and will most likely need another season or two before they come away with another state championship. This is a growing up game for CB that will need to play in this environment if they want to make it out of the region which ALWAYS runs through Miami.
Pahokee will be the big one. I think they're most likely about a 7 point dog, but they have ALOT to play for: a star linebacker with D1 offers was murdered only a week ago, and they still know the percepion around them since the Olive Branch game.
John Curtis vs. NMB seems like trouble for NMB. After seeing the little bit that I have about JC from what Cajun wrote I expect them to win, John Curtis, and to seperate by 10-14 points sometime in the 4th quarter.
My Florida OOS predictions for this week:
Florida #12 Cypress Bay 24 vs. Katy 22 W
Florida #27 North Miami Beach 20 vs. Louisiana Top 5 John Curtis 32 L
Florida #3 Pahokee 32 vs. National #1 Byrnes, SC 35 L
I'd say the first two are likely results while the third really is a tossup where I hope Pahokee proves me wrong.

Raul is very good, but I don't know about a game winning field goal from 50 yards. One thing I haven't heard much about though is special teams. Katy is usually very disciplined in this area and the few mistakes they've made this year on special teams were very correctible and have probably been dealt with by now. I would like to know if anyone has any insight into CB's special teams. This could be a deciding factor come tomorrow.
