View Full Version : Lufkin is very average

You know last year at this time I was stating on this very board that Lufkin's coaching staff were doing the right thing. Played a lot of Juniors in skilled positions last year so that they could make a serious run in playoffs this year. However wheter thru poor coaching or poor performances from players this year Lufkin is no longer among the elite teams in Texas. I say they are very average at best around the 30-35 best team in 5A. Not sure wether a QB change would help but a lot of people are saying so. I think coaching staff 9is OK, maybe refocuse on teaching some basic football, stay at home, good form tackling. As much as I like the spread offense, with this team the old veer offense would work great! Too late to change all that now. Maybe give the other QB a shot use Claybon as a slot WR. They have to do something or it will be another year of one and done. I know this is not real popular among Lufkin faithful right now, However there is no superstar to carry offense. Lufkin must have the 12-15 play drives to succed this year and I can't see it happening with personel and game plans they are using right now. Lufkin is getting their behinds whipped in area they have always been great at in past. Second half adjustments.

I will always support LP sports I just hate to keep seeing them under achieve! If they play to the best of their abilities and lose a game so be it. I just hate to see them stinking up the football field when they can be playing much much better.

I will support them if they are 15-0 or 0-15. That is difference between us. I will state my opinions on here but I still support the team.

I could be dead wrong - but I think we'll see some new faces next week. If we get beat by Shore 35-0 - I GUARANTEE you he'll try some new guys.
We became addicted to Reggie, Jorvorski, and Dez - left the fundamentals at the bus stop.

I can see if they where the TEXANS! :eek:Yes, we all love our football ( eat, sleep, breathe)but the thing is that they are students first and then students of the game.
I played in "77 when we where truly avg. ;), the program has come along, long way. I want them to take those fights, it will make them better this year and years to come. Yes, talent has come down a knot, but over all they are still better than alot of teams. My spoiled Panther Fans! Life will get better playing those hard teams ( if you think about it, we didn't get good playing soft teams to just get a win) . We had that US against the World attitude, and take on anybody.

That is what I am talking about! We had an attitude then. Now all I see is either finger pointing or head shaking. Lets get back to that kind of attitude! Now letting the kids lose that attitude I put blame squarely on the coaching.

Lufkin O is very Average. Lufkin D is a Very Good D but cant get a break cause the O is 3 and out every series it feels like. just got back from the game and they had there chances. just go to practice and get ready for NS that is all you can do. and let the season play out. win or loose i will be a Panther tell the end but they better figure a O to run and a RB that runs and a QB that runs a 4-1 game on the line like a girl that is the truth in that matter.
Great Game Lufkin D they played hard had to stop mesquite multiple times in LP territory thanks to bad punting and piss poor Offense play calling

In your program's defense, their outstanding execution on both sides of the ball turned this fan on to LP football about 5 years ago.
Even with the great players Lufkin has had, I always though they played great team ball and didn't have "Superstar Syndrome."
maybe I just talked myself into it...you have a much closer view of the program than I do.

Please show one post where I was critical of one kid or group of kids on the team. You even threatened to sic your buddy Wide on me. You need to take a look at what he has been posting on the Lufkin board. He has gone a lot further with his critcisms.
What was it you called me? Low class from Rivercrest?
Dude. Get a grip. I just stated Lufkin couldn't handle a 4A team much less a good 5A team last week. This week you come on here blasting the coaching staff (deservedly so I might add) and I get labeled low class from Rivercrest?
Hey. When athleticism is down one year. How about a little execution of the fundamentals?
As much as we railed against SLC over the years. One thing was for sure. The Dragons were going to play sound, fundamental football and that's what knocked Lufkin out of the semis those years. How many players has SLC sent to DI over the last 5 years compared to Lufkin? Lufkin has been a DI factory the last 5 years. How many championships has that talent won the last 5 years?
It's the fundamentals. Until Lufkin goes back to the fundamentals, we will continue to take it out on each other on these boards. That's fine. I'm a big boy and I can handle it.
So I ask again. What have I done differently than you on these boards that gets me labeled low class from Rivercrest?
Is it the fact that I will be rooting for North Shore next week because it is my alma mater and my roots run deeper there than they do in Lufkin?

I agree with that - heck, we probably should have thrown to Dez more - and let him run punts and ko's back - and play qb too.
This offense is just totally demoralized now slorch - you won't recognize them if you see them play.

That program was built from the ground up:notworthy, Yes, we got soft when we came to houston district. They really didn't have any hard games. Yes, talent level is not where it was and to add to it every one else was rose to that level:eek:. The worse thing UIL did was to break up 125 (east texas district):Censor:, Coach has seen what he need to do, well was it to late to bring on those hard games again, only time will tell.
Now we are crying wolf! :confused:Did they cry wolf, when we lose 3 to 4 games a season on hard games back in the day! No! cause they see where it got us!;)

the best thing about our 98 team we played hard and we played together and we ran the I formation back in them days and we opened every game with a WR pass to Sparky from hadnot. I have not seen this years team do anything to try to get some cheap points. 1st play against plano east at Texas stadium WR pass to Sparky goes 68 yards and we did not look back after than and we even broke the RB leg that game that was fun.
I have faith in this years team. were my faith goes down is in the Play calling. it is what it is i guess. but it has to get better and the RB have to run harder and that 4-1 QB sneak today was a mess.

I don't think the problem is the lack of a superstar. The problem that I saw today is no leadership and continuity on the offense. In between series, there was no discussion, no interaction, no fire, no one getting in their faces and getting them pumped up to perform. Either from the players or coaches. I agree that there needs to be some changes. If they don't play better next week, the win streak at Ol' Abe is over, and the loss will be BIG (3-4 scores). Lp is stuck in BIG PLAY mode. They cannot sustain a drive. If they go for a home run and don't get it, they are completely lost on how to move the chains and keep the drive alive. At least that's what I saw today. The players and coaches under acheived in a glaring manner today. I think they go into district 2-3, and come out at 5-5 if things don't change.
I know the kids are doing their best, but someone needs to step up and lead these boys to places they aren't convinced they can go. This is easily the worst Lp offense I've seen in 15+ years. Lots of speed and talent, but very few plays being made.
Their D-line is great, but that doesn't make a team. All in all, they looked very average with little to be excited about. I worry that the kids will lose heart soon if Outlaw doesn't take the reigns of his team and get them playing team ball, and shift the focus off of a Defensive bail out.

I saw no fight from anyone on offense today, maybe with the exception of Ingram. When he got his shot late in the game, he ran harder than anyone had all day.
There seems to be no sense of urgency or brotherhood with the offense. It appears to me that they have no leader that they connect with or trust.
They seem to make it happen when it matters to them. It matters to champions every play.

I wonder how many possessions Mesquite had that started from on our side of the 50. I thinking 6 or 7. The offense and special teams were pathetic. Two punts blocked. I cant think of a time Lufkin even had 1 blocked much less 2 in one game. Hats of to this defense if there is anything to hang our hat on it is the defense. Not much you can do everytime you take the field the other team is starting from your 35. Its only a wonder how Mesquite only managed to get 20 points with all the great field position they had. Seriously I have never seen a team start from inside the other teams 50 more times then I did today. This defense brought it today. Stuffed Mesquite twice on 4th downs and even blocked a FG to give The offense a chane.
No doubt this team will be battle tested, but the season is still young good. thing about HS football it aint college 1 or 2 losses want kill you.

Mesquite deserved the win, but they did nothing special. The score could have easily been 10 - 17 points higher. They were given untold first downs from penalties and great field position most of the game. They were the better team today no doubt, but the loss lies on the back of the Lp Offense and coaches.

I think one of the biggest problems is that Lufkin has lost its swagger. They don't believe in themselves like they have in the past. Could be personnel, could be coaching is not what it should be/has been. All I know is something has to happen to get these guys fired up and believing in themselves or this season is going to be a really rough one.

One would think so. Outlaw is a great coach and has a good staff around him. However, this problem didn't just surface over night. It was apparent last year, and thus far not much has changed.

I agree with you except for 1 thing. The Lufkin fans have gotten spoiled by winning. They either have had a few excellent players or a team that played together to get them very far in playoffs. Example 2001 it was the Reggie McNeal show all the way to a State title, 2002 not so much 1 player but a team that played together,if not for a comeback in fourth quarter by SLC I think they would have won State that year too.

You think. LOL.
Mesquite did a great Job yesterday, but the truth is Lufkin was the better team. Our deep snapper rolled 2 punts back to the punter and both were blocked not to mention the one he got off went 11 yards. Mesquite started just about every drive in LP territory. Maybe somebody can find the exact number, but I can think of 5 times off the top of my head that we gave them the football inside our 50 and 3 times inside the 35. I dont care how good you are you cant win when you play like shi*, and that is exactly what the Pack did yesterday.
I give Mesquite credit, but we had a large part to do with that. When Casey Jones fumbled after making a huge catch inside Skeeter territory and fumbled while dragging a Skeeter DB. I figured the was the Pack's real last shot.
Although with 41 seconds left when LP took over for the final drive. On the 2nd or 3rd play Trimble beat the Skeeter defender what was for sure I though a TD but Jeffery overthrew him by about 3 yards. That was tough because Trimble had atleast a 7-8 yards gap on the DB he could have walked into the endzone. I know the LP side would have errupted if Trimble makes that catch. He had him to but Jeff was just a lil off.

True, Trimble was wide open, but you gotta admit that there were a bunch of tipped passes by the Mesquite secondary, and the D held LP on the 4th and 1 QB dive that changed possesson. Also the 4th down that Mesquite should have kicked the FG that would have put them up by 9 points late in the 4th ( I think there was 5 minutes left or so ), that in itself would have made it a 2 possession game for LP.
The LP defense seemed confused by the middle screen pass up until the 4th quarter also. But give Mesquite credit, they kept on running it and took advantage of the things LP couldnt defend.
LP's offense is average this year and the D is spending way too much time on the field.

Oh right. That dude's funny. So are the other guys. I love those guys.
Honestly, do you think Yates and J.P. Heath do a good job announcing the games? I am from the Lufkin area, and I listen to the games on radio when I'm at work, and I gotta say that those two arent that great. Just my opinion though. They will miss giving you the correct downs and yardage sometimes, then sometimes they will go nuts screaming about a RB getting the ball ( you are thinking " Did he break it wide open ?") and turns out to be a 2 or 3 yd gain. And any close call that doesnt go LP's way is because either, the ref is sorry, or a flag should have been thrown, or its a bad spot. They are just too homer for my liking, and dont call the games the way they truly happen.
Again, just my opinion.

Dont remind me of the 4th and 1. That was the only thing Claybon really did that ticked me off. You can go to Lufkindailynews.com and watch it. He just stood up and stood there like litterally just stood there after taking the snap didnt lunge are nothing, and it wasnt because of the skeeter push up front.
Yeah the Middle screen worked but it wasnt like they were ripping us with it, but they were consistant in getting positive yards everytime.

Just look at the stats. Mesquite benefited from sloopy playing from Lufkin. The Skeeters made plays, but we made more plays for them then they made for themselves. Only one scoring drive did they start from there side of the field all the others were from Lufkin shooting themself in the foot.

Claybon didnt play well. 13 of 31 passing attempts is only what, around 40 % ? 52 yards of his total came in one play. He also threw a pick. ( I know, last play of the game )
Mesquite came into this game with a very average defense, and a good passing attack. Luke Halpin did what he had to do, 27 of 34 for 173 is a whole lot better day than what Claybon did, and Mesquites D played way above thier heads. But give them the credit due, they stopped LP when it counted the most.
Besides, those stats are all jacked up. Where did you get those from? Oh yeah, LDN. Halpin threw 2 td passes also.

I hear you, but 3-7 twice in the 2000's, including last year, after the title year in 1999 and success all through the 90's, will make you appreciate what a blessing it is to be #30 of 250 in the state....;)

I don,t know all was said about 'PANTHERSTANG" but he is right on point,

I'm with you. I can ONLY get the games on line because of being in north country, and it can get a little painful at times. I think they are lousy play-by-play announcers. They may be terrific guys, but they aren't quality radio personalities.

Also the same stats in the DallasMorningNews. Yeah Haplin threw 2 TD's im pretty sure that was a typo.
Yeah he completed 27 of his 34 passes but most of them were just little dink and dunk nothing spectacular. Yeah there defense rose to the occassion I guess not saying much considering it is the LP offense your talking bout. Im just saying Lufkin played the worst game pssobile and only lost by 6. Give Mesquite credit but if we meet again in the playoffs we could easily blow them out the water.
Anyway on to NS. Wil be the battle of questionable play calling the entire game.

"Mesquite was not good, we played our worst game, wait till next time, and if we dont win the next game it will be the coach's fault" Not the normal post you see from the classy Lufkin fans.

BTW That 4A could beat the majority of teams in 5A. We are talking about a team that has 5A enrollment the first day of class.

Who is your squad.
Im not bothered at all about the Mesquite loss. It hurt to loose to Longview more then it did Mesquite. Im not making excuses if I were I could easily complain at the strip and fumble Lufkin recovered but called the RB down. Dont believe me go to Lufkindailynews.com and watch the game for yourself but I doubt you will.
Mesquite had 1 scoring drive that started from there side of the 50. The rest were off Lufkin misques. I could careless about being cosidered a classless Lufkin fan. You can call me a goon for all I care, but the fact is as long as 5 play green is the OC the defense better be ready to play 44 minutes of football.

You can go to Lufkindailynews.com and find it. Outlaw basically shares the same thoughs as me. You can also watch the game on the website as well. Not trying to dog Mesquite they played a great game and executed plays, but we made more plays for them then they made for themselves and ill leave it at That.

Grayowl,
Lufkin fans are right about this one. I haven't seen Mesquite play this bad in ????? years. Hate to think what the score could have been had Mesquite's offense been playing well. Lufkin kept giving the ball to Mesquite with great field position and the Skeeters would give it right back (3 and out).
Not sure about the fumble, I was at the game but it was impossible to see from my seat.
Lufkin fans I am sure that your coach will turn things around in the next few weeks. Not sure I can say the same for the Skeeter's.
Good luck with North Shore.

Very classy - but I don't think Coach Outlaw said Mesquite was no good. He said your qb is very good, and your D is good, except the front 4 being a little weak - which we did not see - they were in our backfield alot!
Good luck Skeeters - and hopefully we BOTH play better and in less heat this week.
