I have heard of cult-like traditions and seen the brainwashing in effect. Any thoughts, facts, or disclaimers?

I have a thought. This is probably the 20th thread on this subject this year and most end with someone (usually Wide-e-wide) banned.

Yeah, do you really wanna start this. Every University has a campus tour and invites high schoolers to visit and attempt to convince them to go to the school. A&M's traditions are thought of as both awesome and silly, just depends on who you are...personally I love them!

I have several friends that go to A&M so don't take this as a bashing thread. I don't plan on making any rude comments and getting banned. i have researched Aggie tgraditions, but I would like to know first hand how it is all done.

What do they do there, besides get a ton of football talent and lose anyway?

I really don't understand what is cultish...
-we have a pep rally on friday nights called midnight yell
-we used to have a bonfire before the big game (t.u.) but after the tragedy there is only an unofficial one, but it was renound as one of the coolest tradtions before
-we honor our past mascots by burying them at the field...
-we stand during the game because once a long time ago someone from the stands actually had to suit up because of a lot of injuries
thats all i can think of.

I love the traditions, except the dead dog thing...that was a little wierd. Did you know that they actually moved the dogs to the park across from the stadium and now some corp freshman kid has to be there with a walkie talkie and tell them the score.
Everything else is really cool, thats just pushin it a bit

To me, aggy is not a cult because of any specific thing they do, but because of what they believe and how the behave.
People in a cult usually believe they know something nobody else does. They believe themselves to be superior over those that aren’t in their position. aggy is the same way. I will say that aggy can be among the best fans you'll come across, but make no mistake... they think they are better than you. I have aggy family and I have seen mass gatherings of aggy in social environments and I have never seen a group of people that are more full of themselves in all my life. They believe their little world to be special and anybody without the ring can't possibly enter their world or be as good.
They funny thing is that their superiority complex is grossly unearned. What is aggy superior in? They have never been superior in football or pretty much any other sport. Their academics are good, but nowhere near tops in the state. Even their engineering dept., for which they have so much pride, is no longer best in the state. The only thing aggy can claim is that they produce more soldiers than any school outside of the military academies. That's cool and all, but when you get right down to it, that's also kind of sad. A non-military institution and that is about the best they can claim.
It should be noted that not all aggy act this way, but enough of them do that it tarnishes the image of the entire institution. That is what makes aggy cultish. It's not the dead dogs with their own scoreboard or milkmen in the place of cheerleaders (though those things are quite disturbing themselves), but rather the undeserved sense of superiority and the "better than thou" attitude that they so often express.

jtk...you left out the whole "uncover" thing...,buzzcuts for civillians, worshipping a dog, and thinking the Dixie Chicken is actually a cool place to hang out...
Other than that...you nailed it.

There's only so many paragraphs I can type while manning the grill, consuming mass quantities the frosty stuff and watching football. I just tried to go for a rough overview.

I'm not going to atack your general statement because a lot fo Ags do think they're better than everyone esle, but so do a lot of sips...however, our womens soccer team has been best overall in at least the BigXII south if not the whole BigXII...and our Vetrinary school is one of if not the best below the Mason/Dixon line.

My keyboard is covered in grease, I burned my hand a little because I was watching the Texas game outside while flipping brauts (fire+TV=trouble) and one of my idiot friends is now hiding my beers, but all is good because Texas crushed, aggy lost and Jayhawk the Hutt is being rolled back up to Kansas. All is right with the world.

That's just the point. Texas fans and alumni have a reason to think they are better than most (though I would rather they be a bit more humble from time to time). I don't mean that in a bad way, but nothing is wrong with a little arrogance so long as you have a reason to be. Texas has won multiple national championships in multiple sports. It's athletic dept. is widely regarded as the best in the nation. Academically, Texas is among the very best. It's something folks can be very proud of.
What separates aggy from Texas (aside from the goofy traditions) and what makes aggy behavior cultish while Texas is just cool, is the fact that aggy's superiority complex is undeserved while Texas' is just the opposite.
