I think the worst thing to happen to Mesquite's chances in this game was our dear friend, Ike. Say what you will about the challenge, or lack thereof, that Bellaire presented. For Mesquite it was, at least, a guarantee that this young group of Dragons would have no more than the usual amount of time to prepare for them. Wasson won't admit it, nor should he, but to have no game last week provided his staff with a tremendous opportunity. We have two games worth of experience and appear to be growing by leaps and bounds. To be given a few extra days to review, polish and prepare during a season is a rare gift. Mesquite is in trouble, the bad kind. Carroll will roll in this one, 42-7.

Well since Scott S. seems to be missing this week, here's how I see it....On Friday the Dragons travel to Mesquite for a big game with the 2-1 Skeeters. Mesquite has wins over Lake Highlands and Hebron, but lost this past Friday to Garland Naaman Forest. Comparing the teams.......
Mesquite
Offense avg: 24.7 ppg and 313.0 ypg
Defense avg: 25.3 ppg and 372.3 ypg
SLC
Offense avg: 39.5 ppg and 424.0 ypg
Defense avg: 9.5 ppg and 282.0 ypg
With the week off I expect the Dragons to be really energized right out of the gate and play that way the whole game. Mesquite will draw energy from the home crowd and will keep it reasonably close in the 1st half, but the Dragons pull away in the 2nd half........

It is true.
But I can't take it any more... can't wait on scott.
After ALOT of time to reflect... The Dragon players are chomping at the bit to play someone... There well rested and prior to said rest, were staring to make some strides in their play.
The Skeets just came off a gruiling, pounding running attack in GNF.. who's defense is not near on the level of Carroll's. I think this is a bad week for Mesquite to be playing us. Our running game may not be a "pound it down your throat" threat.. But it is very effective.. I think with the passing game starting to realize their potential... Our spread attack is going to be overwhelming to a Skeets defense that gave up alot of yards and points to GNF. Their QB can throw though... But they cant control the clock enough to keep us from scoring a bunch in this one.

Without football action last week, this is a blue collar week for predictions but let's give it a shot...
* Prior to the game, a sea of green stands ready to enter thru the gates, assume their spots on the visitor side of the field AND NOT ONE SL FAN CHOOSES TO SIT ON THE HOME SIDE.;)
* Those same fans make some serious noise to help the Dragons return to form.
*At least one creative Mesquite HS banner claims that they will "Slay the Dragons"
* Early in the game following a defensive stop, a Skeeter punt travels up into the air, returns back toward earth, is caught by a Dragon return man and we actually advance the ball from that spot.
* Defense sets the early tone on both sides. SL gets a late score right before half, and once again rev it up in the last 2 quarters, pulling away with a hard earned 31-10 victory.
* All is right again in the land south of the lake. Toonman begins calculating minutes we'll need to wait thru til Saturday nite's War with the Shore.
Stay thirsty, my friends!

How would you say this defense rates in comparison with your 2006 unit? That unit was big time at DE and LB. The DB's weren't too shabby either. I used to obssess over Padron's highlights and just marvel at how quickly he processed things. Amazing instincts, football intelligence...what ever it was he had IT.

Being that we will be in Skeetville, wouldn't it be more fitting if their banner said " Ride the Dragons for 8 seconds"?

How would you rate Jackson Richards against Bryce Saldi?
Totally different players. Jackson is much bigger. Saldi was more of a speed and finesse guy where Jackson is more of your stereotypical big body, very strong defensive end. He is pretty quick but more of a bull rusher and contains better. I would say that these defensive ends are better than in '06. Ok Dragon fans do not throw darts, just MO. I think Burnett is better than Russo, Kyle was awesome but Burnett is at another level. Richards is a true defensive end and I think if it were not for the line backing corps in '06 Bryce would have been a better fit at OLB.
This years Linebackers are good but at this point not as good as in '06 and I think they DB's on this years team are comparable to '06.
This years defense is very very good.

As you know due to Calpreps we have already written off the season and were going to forfeit the season but we did not want to deny our opponents the thrill of beating the once mighty Dragons.

I do not drink Coors light. I drink Vodka and chase it with Rolling Rock when available.
Now as far as Panther goes, you are the one that backed out of the beer drinking last time and Friday because of that I am having surgery #2, nothing serious, outpatient deal. However I will be easy to spot in Mesquite on Friday night, I will be the big one with the Dragon tattoo drooling on himself. The meds take a while to wear off, but they are way better than anything I have ever drank. Don't know about the rest of the Mesquite faithfull, but I am very excited about the Southlake Carroll game. The Skeeters have a good group this year and should win a few more games. I'm realistic though and this probably won't be one of them. The only time I've seen the Dragons in person was at the matchup with MNW and that was a great game.
Good luck to all.

Sometimes I do vote for an obvious underdog just to mess with people. I don't think I voted in this poll though. I just made a prediction contingent upon a jinx. So you still have to find two people to 'fess up.

Carroll 77

Mesquite has been competitive this year and I want no part of such a bold prediction! While I do hope and believe the Dragons will prevail, I have too much respect for the Skeeters to think it will be anything but a battle.

How about this (oh great Carnack)? Dragon O establishes strong running game in week 3. Avers seen on the field with mic in hand giving post game interview as the co-offensive player of the game. Padron spreads the ball around to 7 receivers in his prolific passing exhibition. He too is seen in his typical post game stance with mic in hand and headphones in place.
Specific enough??? If you want details, I will need a few days.....still a little fuzzy, try again later.......

Not a lot of mystery here arrogant username one!:D I too tend to root for the underdog... I am making the Skeeters a sentimental favorite in the "less than 10" catagory. Not a ton of logic to back it up... They are terribly athletic in the secondary as well as at reciever and if they limit the mistakes that have plagued them these past few weeks, they are surely capable of making this close. Keep in mind, this staff (sans pawn-daddy) only has three games under thier belts, with each passing week, they will continue to gel and the team on the field will benefit as a result.
In a close finish, I am going with history and say Mesquite prevails... Not to say that the Dragons are not capable of pulling out a close one, I am still in awe of the the way RD and CO capitalized after the Trinity fiasco at Texas Stadium a couple of years back. However, there was something sureal about that fumble last December that may have the MARK OF REALITY all over it... As an interested observer that day, I struggled to come to grips with that loss more than most of the green-clad coolade drinkers that surrounded me... It had been a given for so very long...
SLC will continue to be a very good team for the foreseable future, there is simply too much talent in the pipeline for that not to be a reality. However, the days of cyclical 16-0's are a thing of the past... Peace!
And pants, I am trying really hard to love you too you big tatted up, drugged-up a-hole! :)

WOW... You just single handedly deflated the air of confidence in the "Green Room".
But I will add that we are not looking for 16-0. We are looking for 3-0. This team is a young talented team. So we will take it one week at a time. By taking this approach 14 more times we will be 16-0.:D

I hope you are correct, but I think the week off will hurt us slightly, at least in the 1st qtr. I still expect a solid Dragon victory, but extra time to prepare is not what the Dragons needed. They needed quality reps against an opponent not dressed in green and to hit someone hard that they don't know on a first name basis, ie. they needed a real game. With only 1 scrimmage this year, and only 8 quarters under their collective belt, they were just beginning to feel "it" in the 2nd half of the Arlington game. I expect a little rustiness this week. Hopefully it will get worked out in the 1st qtr instead of the 3rd qtr.

Southlake is in a familiar place, starting the season 2-0. With Kyle Padron under center, Carroll has averaged 424 yards per game. Mesquite is 2-1 for the first time since 2003. I guess there is a still a possibility for a 16 game season should Carroll be able to pick up a game in what would have been the off-week before district play starts and assuming that North Shore will be able to get open by the end of the week. The former has at least a 50/50 shot at becoming reality; the later would require the electricity to be back, water purification systems to be restored and the sewer/sanitation faciities to be functioning again plus the students and teachers to be back in the area. Does anyone know the status of North Shore? How are those good folks getting through this?

To take the side of those in need and protect them from the tyranny of the all powerful!
To hold up those ideals as a proud banner and justification as to why we exist! O' to see our forefathers as they clawed their way up the mountain of moral and idealistic decay to raise the Red, White and Blue proudly for all to see and aspire to.
THEY, my dear friend were the original UNDERDOGS! It was they who have left an inspired legacy for us to uphold! And how dare we now forget those sacrifices made in the name of something greater than our checking accounts... something greater than a 10 oz peppercorn fillet at JR"s...
I had more to say, but it was drowned out by a rousing, standing applause here in my own head...;)
I heard on a certain radio station a year or so ago, a caller for a random contest say he was from S-lake... Well Genghis this is where we differ philosophically. I think that those patriots that came before us did not look at themselves as underdogs, while that may have been the case and certainly they understood the odds but were more focused on the job at hand and were not seeking a rally cry because we are the little guys, please admire us for what we are doing even in defeat because at least we tried.
If you win or succeed were you really the underdog. Who decides that?
Life is not based on an odds maker in Vegas.
If you took the time to get to know the people of Southlake you would find that we are not focused on our check books or how thick our wallets are. The truth is they are thinner than most people would think. Most of us are willing to sacrifice other things to raise children in an excellent community, excellent school district etc.
We have pride in our community not our material possessions.
We support each other and our surrounding neighbors.
That is what makes us different and again that groundwork was laid well before my arrival.
Our kids are not raised by nannies.
Do not hind behind the flag and think that is going to fly or make your argument more palatable. Do not insult those great Americans that created this country by somehow relating their sacrifices and achievements by comparing them to a high school football game.
Seriously drink the Kool Aid.
If you have that much of a problem with people from Southlake and Colleyville then leave.

The hosts ask him how he thought he was going to do and he replied "I am going to win", the hosts warned him that the odds were pretty long against that and he responded with "I'm from Southlake, everyone is a winner, none of us know how to lose..." I wish to one day speak with that man, in the mean time, that is a great perspective until one considers the inverse... how does the "Winner from Southlake" view the rest of us "underachievers who cheer for the underdogs and just resort to hating because it is the easy thing to do"?
maybe I already know...

Talk about getting a sense of humor... damn 'pants, you need a drink! As to your points, in my humble opinion, valid for the most part. You are missing some factual stuff about us literally being the underdogs until post-1945 when Europe had kicked its own @ss and we were the only ones left standing. Then our nuclear and economic advantage gave us the upper hand for the next 70 or so years.
And really, unless you KNOW someone's background... never tell them what to do with their patriotism or the flag... Not being a &ick...Just not a good idea...
I had a coach back in the day that used to say, "young men! Football is as close as you little weeny teenagers are ever going to get to war, so you had better enjoy it before you have to fight it!" That dude was a real *****, but eerily prophetic...
I have nothing real against S-lakkei humans, just f-ball... I have met many fine residents of that imitation of a real town. Many of my comments were very personal, (I salivate at the thought of a 10 inch peppercorn fillet from JR's, a COLLEYVILLE steak house... if you haven't been, you can't understand) and if you find them to be personally insulting... stop looking in the mirror my long lost "brotha from a different motha"!

Back to the game. Keeping in mind, I really have no idea what I am saying. ..I believe someone really has their finger on the right pulse, forgive me for not recalling who when they stated that the Dragons need game reps not practice reps... nothing could be closer to the truth. These kids have been getting hundreds of reps a week for years (during practice)... What they need are game reps against quality competition to truly maximize their acquired skills.
That off week is only an advantage is you have key players who are hurt. Otherwise it serves as a distraction and a momentum killer. With NorthShore on the immediate horizon, it is easy to overlook the recently defeated Skeeters and spend 10 days thinking about the long awaited matchup... Keep in mind, these kids are like every other, they too lay awake at night and dream of making the big play in the big game and if there happens to be a not-so-big game in between... oops!

I hear that pregame tickets were very limited and thus were being sold at only the two HS campuses. As of mid-afternoon yesterday, tickets were still available at CHS and a call went out over their PA as a reminder to the students. I hope I'm wrong but we may not have the level of support we've been used to at this game.

Wasn't questioning anyone's patriotism, just insulting to some to compare the two. Enough said.
Good to see we are not going to end up with an 8 game season as we will be playing on Oct 3 and the North Shore game is technically still on but I understand they have bigger issues than a football game right now but Panther is down there helping them out.
Glad you like JR's stay over there in Colleyville we do not need the tax revenue that badly.
By the way I love what I see in the mirror each day hence the reason I spend so much time there.:D
Will be good to get back to football, kick some butt. I cannot wait until week 11 and maybe then people will stop talking about the decline of the Dynasty. We are actually enjoying it. It is fun. It is actually quite a compliment that people want our football team to fail so badly.

Based on what I have seen from 7th grade through JV and the number of juniors we have playing this year, it is not going to be anytime soon.

According the Cal Preps we are in dire straights and we already have 2 wins and would have won last week so we are only allowed 2 more.
Carroll loses by 3 touchdowns:D as we attempt to run back 3 punts and fumble each time that turn into touchdowns for the blood sucking insects.

"pants, you need to come to grips with the punt returns... in my limited experience and observation, offensive head coaches are big fans of the fair catch and then getting their O on the field where they have control of the calls and the risk/reward. It also looks really good to have all of those extra yards on the stat sheet!
Your defensive head coaches tend to be the ones with the exotic returns, walls, cross kicks etc... punt return is a defensive special team personnelled with most exclusively defensive guys. That and getting the ball as far away from the goal line as possible...
During the dodge era, it was incredible to watch a booming punt and the returner fair catch with no one within 20 yds of him... The offense would jog on to the field at the 15 and then go 85 yds in 6 plays to score...
If you are going to pull the plug at 50pts, you need to rack up as much yards/experience as possible on your way there.

At Trinity it is very different. For some reason I'll never understand, they never call for a fair catch....even when it is the smart thing to do. I hold my breath every week as I watch the guy settle in under the punt and then get creamed. It will eventually come back to bite us.

Green JV won 45 - 35 and it was a battle. Mesquite has some speed but no stamina as the Green team just kept the ball longer when it counted. Some big boys out there were huffing and puffing in the maroon and white.
Black JV played our friends from across the street, Colleyville, and whupped up on them 47-14. Was interesting for the first ten minutes but the Panthers just couldn't keep up. This unit really looks like it is gelling nicely and has a lot of promise for the future.:D

Without football action last week, this is a blue collar week for predictions but let's give it a shot...
* Prior to the game, a sea of green stands ready to enter thru the gates, assume their spots on the visitor side of the field AND NOT ONE SL FAN CHOOSES TO SIT ON THE HOME SIDE.;) NAILED IT
* Those same fans make some serious noise to help the Dragons return to form. NAILED IT
*At least one creative Mesquite HS banner claims that they will "Slay the Dragons" NAILED IT
* Early in the game following a defensive stop, a Skeeter punt travels up into the air, returns back toward earth, is caught by a Dragon return man and we actually advance the ball from that spot.
* Defense sets the early tone on both sides. SL gets a late score right before half, and once again rev it up in the last 2 quarters, pulling away with a hard earned 31-10 victory. NAILED IT
* All is right again in the land south of the lake. Toonman begins calculating minutes we'll need to wait thru til Saturday nite's War with the Shore.
Stay thirsty, my friends!

No, he was moved to linebacker and played at Notre Dame and had a decent career at Oakland. The other running back for Tatum, Anthony Hodge, (both had over 200 yards rushing the game before Carroll) played at Baylor.

Speaking of "nailing it," what about my prediction that Avers gets offensive player of the game and does radio show????? pretty good, huh Carnack? Don't tell anyone how I overestimated the offensive production however. I did say 42-10, not bad.
Dragonbuck is officially on the Dragon visionary squad with me, of course only with the blessing of Farmer. Bkr is our pompous friend.

Aahhhhhhh, Genghis. I'll be honest. I don't even have the energy to get caught up on all the drama with you & Pants. That said, GO DISAPPEARING SKEETERS BANNER! or something to that effect. My comment was not directed at you, unless you choose to sit with the masses that await our downfall like Jebediah awaits Armegedon. For the record, it's been us against the world for quite awhile now, being lonely at the top and all. If I'm following you, the freshmen talent pool scares you more than the current junior class? Not doubting you perception, that's just a truly original opinion. For the most part, this junior class is regarded as the potential best our program has produced.
No more drama SLC93. I am keeping it strictly football related with Genghis. If he wants to do off on tangents he will be doing it all alone.

It's all good, Pants. Sometimes you just gotta rant. We all have. Overall, it's been real nice hearing some newer Dragon voices complimenting some of our all timers like DD, Bkr, Doc, GD and SS. I haven't been able to post as much as I would like, lately, but I'm still reading.:D

I appreciate your self-distancing from the drama... It is just work induced stress releaving... nothing more, nothing less. As to my perception of your pipeline. Unless quite a few of your playmakers were up on the varsity last season as sophomores (which I am fairly sure was not the case) your "A" team JV was absolutely stroked by Colleyville at D-stadium by 30 or something similar... Don't get me wrong, 30 points is bad, but the man-handling was much worse... it was like watching the SLC CHHS game from two years ago during the regular season... you remember, the 35-7 halftime mess... I have no idea what the final was, I had blacked out by that time.
As for the JV last year, maybe the moon was wrong, but that limited view of them tends to throw that class in a fairly unattractive light. Is there something I am not aware of? Something that would explain my "original" opinion?
And no, the kicker/backer kid does not count as your "all of the talent on the varsity". Yes he was up and kicked. Has anyone seen the size of that kid's muscular development??? To have arms like that as a 16 year old...Someone should sit him down and have a talk with him... (there are other things to be doing with his time besides working out... what did you think I was going to say?)
Peace!

Last years sophs on varsity that did not play JV:
Cade Foster - Kicker / backup role at LB
Mitchell Osborne - backup role at LB
Cody Weaver - backup role on OL
Jackson Richards - Started all 13 games at DE
Tommy Avers - Backup roll at RB / Started all playoff games
Will McWhirter - Backup roll on OL
Lincoln Schick - Backup roll at LB and DT
These 7 players may have had an influence on JV...

Weren't Ben Perry and Tony Barone also on varsity? Or did they play JV as well?
Also, did Kyle Williamson play Colleyville last year? He was injured for a large chunk of the year, wasn't he?

I think the above mentioned double dipped. Yes Kyle was injured last year and missed the Colleyville game if my memory (???) is correct.

if the below mentioned group had played on thursdays, you might very well have seen a different outcome. but maybe that chhs crew is extra-special bad. i expect et will be in trouble t'were that the case. i guess we'll see.

Ring beat me to it cuz thats how he rolls.:D I made this comment several times during the course of last season. It bears repeating. Name another program of Carroll's profile that has ever had seven sophmores contributing on the varsity level. You can't because it just doesn't happen. The 2007 squad lost far too many games to injury. For the most part, however, these kids stepped into active roles and were not the reason Carroll bowed out early last season. I think 7 players of varsity ilk missing from a jv squad would have had more than a minor impact on whatever game it was you observed. Perhaps I misunderstood. I took your post to mean that you were extremely impressed with our 9th & 10th grade kids but not so much with the 11th grade class. That really struck me as odd. Perhaps the jv fails to impress you this season because so many of the junior class are earning letters on the varsity squad. Clarification?

No, he was moved to linebacker and played at Notre Dame and had a decent career at Oakland. The other running back for Tatum, Anthony Hodge, (both had over 200 yards rushing the game before Carroll) played at Baylor.
This says he went to OU.

I was not aware of the many sophs up on the varsity last year... yes, they would undoubtedly have made a difference. As to Colleyville, this seems to be their best class. Of this class, six sophomores played up and saw significant or starting time during the quarterfinal run of 06'. (y'all remember that one I imagine... losing to you guys twice in one year really sucks.)
Oh and if you have not heard/(smelled), an old SLC friend-of-the-program just reappeared

Intersting... I find it funny that you feel you have the right to even join this conversation... I have yet to ascertain any level of knowledge you possess pertaining to the game that is football in the years I have read this forum; especially your contributions to it.
However, I would like to thank you, you allowed me to pick the username "genghis". I was unsure as to the maturity of picking one of my all-time favorite historical personas as a username, but when people are using fantasy gaming personas... well then, why the hell not!!!?
