Ball removed from football playoffs
Tornadoes forfeit eight wins due to ineligible player

The Ball Tornadoes have forfeited eight wins and were removed from the state playoffs Wednesday due to violation of a University Interscholastic League rule.
It was discovered that the Tors (8-2) used an ineligible player in all 10 games. The player, whose name was not released, violated a residency rule that requires students to live in district with a guardian for one continuous calendar year before participating in football.
"The only thing I can say is that I'm hurt," Ball coach Ron Holmes said. "After these kids worked so hard — to get a call like that is hard to swallow."
Galveston ISD athletic director Brent Jaco said a question about the player's residency arose during a recent school investigation of a separate matter. At that point, the school began investigating the player's eligibility and, according to UIL athletic coordinator Mark Cousins, self-reported the violation.
"Personally, I'm as devastated as anyone in the Galveston community," Jaco said. "We had a great football season. We were looking forward to a good run in the playoffs, and it's devastating to our players and our entire student body."
Alvin (4-6) takes Ball's place in the Division II playoffs and will face La Porte at 7 p.m. Saturday at District Stadium in League City.
Alvin coach Michael Bass found out his team would be in the playoffs Wednesday afternoon and moved quickly to get the team on the field.
"We're excited to be going to the playoffs and represent District 24-5A ... and the Alvin community," Bass said.

What's with the late notice? Alvin will more than likely get slaughtered after not stepping on the field for almost a week...

Wow... What a terrible thing happen for Galveston... Shame on them
I heard another school in Tyler Area "Whitehouse" 4A School who had same thing happen and they had to forfeited most of the games. I don't know if thats normal.

Its a shame, I was looking forward to a Humble-GBall match up. I dont think they should of made the entire team forfeit.

I thought it was Whitehouse, as in that's the name of the town/school, not the nickname. I don't even live in Tyler and know that. Also, Jacksonville had the same issue, ineligible player keeps them out of the playoffs. The Whitehouse issue came up earlier in the year, Jacksonville's ineligible player/forfeits came to light two hours before they went out to play Nacogdoches this past Friday.

Big meeting today at Clear Lake HS (not sure why at Lake, maybe central location?) with all district reps. and the UIL to discuss Ball's situation. Ball is trying to get a restraining order to allow the Tors to play. One player moved out of district during the season and then returned but did not move back in with his parents and that is a UIL violation. News report stated that this is not the first time this type of thing has happened, did not say if this was at Ball or not, and that UIL was trying to send a message. Ball self reported but looks like they don't have enough time to ressolve.
La Porte must be having a difficult time preparing a game plan for two teams while they await the outcome. I think it is too late to make another change but ruling is expected from Lake later today. Watch the news.

I doubt they will allow Ball in, but I really hope they let them change their mind. Those kids worked really hard all season and are actually one of the better teams in the area. They deserve playoffs and the whole team shouldn't be penalized for one kid.

Laporte should cotinue to practice for Ball, they should have no problem with Alvin.

Self reported because someone inside the Athletic department confirmed the coaches knew the young man was ineligible. Investigation started when he got in trouble and they couldn't reach his mother (she is in Missouri working). Yes, he moved back after being gone a year which falls right into the UIL rules that were broken. The coaches just shouldn't have taken the chance and he shouldn't have gotten trouble with his cell phone pics. Because the coaches knew or a least someone on the staff, thats why the Katy exception does not qualify. Ball is out and its a shame but they know the rules and I'm hearing that someone had an axe to grind with Coach Holmes so this is where it all ends up when the trouble started or nobody would have probably ever known.
Good thing we didn't have picture cameras when I was in school lol. Seem to recall cheerleaders, shaving cream and a shower incident. :D

I agree. La Porte can pass the ball pretty well. Alvin has a good run stop defense but not so good vs. the pass.
Don't Alvin and Ball both run a spread type offense? Same basics to prepare for.

Oiler1, I had heard that someone at Ball knew about the infraction and that it all came to light over another incident but I had not heard what that incident was about.
Yeah, you're right a shame for the team but if the coaches knew about it, they are toast on this one.
Good luck to the Oilers vs. NS, a tough first round draw. Keep it close and good things can happen; maybe this is the year.

The coaches should be ran over the coals for this one. If they knew from the get go and tried to "let it slide by" then they should be punished for it. No way this falls under the Katy rule. Not even close to the same situation.

Exactly right Fleeman93. UIL didn't cut them slack because someone on that staff knew and they let it slide. Supposedly he was a nice kid (until he got caught for something) and he was only playing special teams, not even a starter. They should have never taken the chance or taken the right channels to try and clear it up. Waivers can be granted for certain situations and if filed properly I'm sure it would have been granted after his transcripts came in. He would have probably had to sit out the preseason at the very least but at least the team would still be in the playoffs.
That said if the appeal works based on a waiver granted in arrears, then the brackets will be messed up once more and they will play Saturday. Should have gotten the waiver in the first place and this would have never happened.
just heard on the news GBall is definitley out and the Alvin Yellowjackets are in

so now 24-5a is represnted with
Pearland (10-0)
and
Creek (3-7)
Alvin (3-7)
so is 24-5a the weakest district in the state this year?

How is it possible for TWO 3-7 teams to make the playoffs? Surely that must be wrong... I'd say if you're not at least .500, the other team should just get a bye. :)
Or, only the top 3 teams from a district go as long as they are .500. That would surely cut down the size of the Div II playoffs a wee bit.

Other than Pearland and Ball all the rest of the teams were just plain bad and butchered each other into 3-7 and 2-8 records

Easy, 6 team district. Win 3 district games out of 5 and you could make the playoffs, no matter what your overall record is.

Weaker than 23-5a? Maybe. But you gotta give Pearland some credit, They beat an 0-8 team by 3 pts. What a blowout!

According to the local Houston news, it is official now - Ball will not play. They tried to get a 'retroactive waiver' of the residency requirement approved by the district executive committee so they could take it and then petition the UIL, but the committee denied the rquest.
In what I thought was a pretty classy and mature gesture - several of the players were shown leaving the admin building carrying a sign that said:
"When you make a mistake...admit it... learn from it... and don't repreat it"
