View Full Version : Political Threads in the Yard?

You have options. Vote.
A. None: Political threads will be banned for good. If user makes political thread...user possibly deleted along with thread.
B. One official political thread. Easier to moderate, user may be deleted at any time along with thread as they are held accountable for anything said including racist remarks, suicide comments, personal attacks, or anything else that would typically be grounds for a banning on the main board.
C. Two political threads at once MAX. See above.
Get your vote on, you have until Friday.
Everyone's vote is private, except for mine. Which as one who has to waste time moderating these things, you can guess that I voted for none.

Some of these have been interesting and enjoyable; others not so much. So count me in for at least allowing them. If they get out of hand, they can always be locked.

I vote for one. Right now, if you look at the number of threads in the yard, and the threads in College and NFL sections, the political discussions are the most active. I say let them stay, after the election, it will die down.

just like many convenience stores that are by schools: one teenager at a time, please.;):D
I voted for two, but don't see a reason for a limit. I wish we could have a prerequisite of demonstrating a willingness/ ability to have a coinstructive conversation while avoiding the same ole stereotypical pudowns when some differentiates from the author's inclinations.
Select all's should be eliminated. If I need regurgitation of some political hack's slanted statistics and / or opinions, I readily know where to find them on my own. Then again, this practice is a fantastic indicator of people's own original thinking ability.

No offense, but I'm not voting. The Yard, if I remember, was a place for discourse that didn't relate to the main points of the board.....HS, College, and Pro Football.
Politics is the main thing going on right now.....with the economy and the energy crisis and terrorism having effects on how we live our lives, I think it's quite natural that people who go to HS football games would be worried as to how the legislation of our country and it's laws could effect their ability to afford to go to games and to attend them with a general knowledge of safety.
I have no idea how much time you guys spend cleaning up our garbage here....and I don't envy your job.....but I think it does a great disservice to the posters to limit our outlets for discourse in a very, very troubled time.....
....but....it's not my board, I just hang out here...so I'll go as the leaders say we go.....but I would be remiss if I didn't voice my opinion on this subject.
I too believe that in a few months the furor will die down and people will be waiting to see how the new administration will change or not change things.
I just feel that limiting the various possible subjects to be covered in a political discourse would be difficult, at best, to follow on one or two threads.
Just my two cents.....;)

For post #19,000 jtk would like to humbly advocate the creation of a separate board devoted entirely to politics... at least through the election. There is a ton of good political discussion that goes on here (almost none involving Firebird) and it seems a shame to limit that discussion, but I also see the need to "cleanse" The Yard for those who have an interest in Yard material that doesn't pertain to politics. It seems to me that a desirable compromise can be achieved here through the opening of a new forum.
I will even go so far as to suggest a possible name for the proposed board. I offer up the name "The Congress" styled as the place "Where everybody runs their mouth and nothing gets done". We even have a board mascot...

Where'd all this come from???
While beyond annoying...it could be worse...
1. We could be closer to a 50/50 split...then we'd have to call you the Supreme Court…
2. How are you going to stop me from creating a third ‘political’ thread???
3. Can you define ‘political thread’???
4. If there are two political threads on Page 1…and I drag one back to life from Page 3…what happens???
The problem as I see it is that you have .0005% of the board bating 12.9995% of the board (and vice-versa)…leaving 72% following football…
God only knows what rocketgrl and the other 15% are up to…:)
The threads are mostly stupid…but some develop into a good debate…usually headed in that direction by page 2…
The easiest way to manage the Yard for the next couple of months would seem to be just locking a lot more threads…without explanation…
You are going to have people be rude or getting butt hurt either way...
At the risk of never seeing Ms Lima again...I'd rather you disable the picture posting feature......I could live without the fail boat picture AGAIN...
So...don't be a GW...exercise that veto power...;)

I agree with DrEdward. I voted two MAX, since that was my only option. I really do enjoy hearing/seeing what other people think. Even though I do "try" to stay out of them now. I find it informative to see other people's views on a wide variety of things. I frankly find the discussion to be mostly enlightening.
and that's a fact. in my opinion.

Unbelievable !!
Isn't that what the yard is for?
Or do we want to regulate people's ability to free speech. Like it or not, discussion boards have become the new coffee shop, barber shop, and park bench for discourse.
I guess you are voting O'man also:rolleyes:

I do understand Chill's desire to not have to monitor so many threads regarding the same topic. And whether they are in the yard or on another forum, he is still going to have to monitor them. I don't think he is saying not to have the discussions, just to limit them to a couple of threads so he can continue to have a life beyond the board.

That usually happens after I watch the Jim Mora press conference. I get all fired up.
"We couldn't run the ball. We didn't try to run the ball. We couldn't complete a pass. We didn't block. We didn't tackle. We sucked."
On the subject of political threads, we admins will discuss this and make a decision for the site moving forward. It definitely warrants attention (has for a while).
I don't support the creation of an all politics board, even if temporary, on a sports site.

12 threads at the moment and I may have missed some political threads that don't explicitly say "Obama, McCain, or Palin."
I voted no but I think the wording should be changed to no election threads. Politics covers a lot of things that have absolutely nothing to do with this election.

Even if they want to keep the threads, just keep 3 threads, a Democrat and republican and a debate one for personnel disagreements. No need to make an entire thread/topic for one stupid sentence or post you could have posted in a previous thread.
But i guess the post whores need to get that extra +1 post....

I guess the thing that floors me is this: We have the ability to NOT read a thread if we dont want to. If you dont want to read about politics, then WTF are you doing clicking on a thread that's about politics?
And then there are some that are all into until their "guy/girl/farmanimal" gets picked on a little bit. Which is kinda sad, take it with a grain of salt.
I dont say too much on this board, but I do read a lot. I find it shocking that we have a section to talk about stuff other than football and people are whining about the discussion that goes on there. Really, when I only want to read about football, I do not EVER come to the Yard to read. Sometimes I wanna read about whatever so I go all over the board.
Censorship is not the way to go. And whomever it was that suggested after the election most of the politic talk will die down is correct. Then everyone will get back to talking about everything.
Where will it end? right now it's politics. Next time it may be talking about cars. I have a Dodge and I tend to bash those that are suckered into drive a GM product. How may times can I pick on a GM driver before I get banned for picking on him/her for being a 'tard and driving a substandard product?
Where do we draw the line? and why do we draw it?

Appreciate the comments and really do take all of them into consideration.
I'd love to believe that we could all discuss things without it turning into personal attacks, offensive posts, etc. Unfortunately, the "political" threads always do at some point. And by political, I'd have to say that includes ALL things political (unless we are talking about Dada and his policies which are allowed :) ). Again, I'd love to believe issues political in nature could be discussed that seemingly have NOTHING to do with the election, but seriously who are we kidding. Show me a thread that does this without the thread turning out like all of the others.
We've let them go on for quite some time now and in the last 3 days it has just reached a level where something has to be done with the number of PM's and reported posts coming as a result of some of these. A certain point has been reached to where it is taking away quite a bit of the time we normally have to do updates for the site, but instead are having to play Dr. Phil, babysit, etc.
I also understand the point that it's the Yard and why not just not click on the thread if you know you're probably going to be offended by what's in there. Or the point that people need to have thicker skin. I get all of that and agree, but unfortunately it's just the nature of the internet and something that is never going to change.
On one hand I'd love to just say no political threads leading up to the election. Yet on the other, I know people want to talk about it and I'm generally not in favor of limiting people on what they can talk about. In this case though, we need to reel it in somehow, one or two allowed at a time unless the overall opinion is to get rid of them all together, because it's dang near impossible to moderate 10+ election threads along with the rest of the board.

It was me.....:D
Limiting political threads.....let's look at that.
1. Are you trying to kill this board? In the off season, this place is dead....no traffic....if you kill off the political discourse, you kill off the traffic and the interest in your board.....not good for the advertising.
2. Man does not live by sports alone.....he has a job, pays bills, cares about his life, environment, his family's welfare......politics is tighly intertwined with his life.....it's natural to think about it and want discourse on it....those who don't can skip the threads....it's a choice, people.....I don't click on Valley Football threads because I could care less, I know nothing about Valley teams....but I sure don't want threads about the Valley banned or limited....I'l just continue to not read them. I don't click on nerdy computer or technology threads....but I don't want them banned either.
3. Threads regularly degrade into political threads. Somebody is talking about something....then somebody says it wouldn't be that way if Bush wasn't president....somebody else says Obama couldn't do any better.....see what I mean? This thing will get nasty trying to police because the threads go political anyway.
4. If people hate political threads so much, why do they read them? If they don't like them, why do they know so much about them? Sounds like many people are somewhat like people who lurk about porn sites....they like the porn, but don't want anybody else to know thy like it....;)
5. Does this mean ther wil also be no further threads on:
The environment
NAFTA
immigration
the economy
gas prices
energy
drilling
Iraq
Iran
Afghanistan
Korea
OPEC
Israel
Hesbollah (sp)
Al Qieda
Hammas
unwed mothers
teen pregnancy
hurricane relief and response
hurricane evacuation plans
terrorism
IED's
illegal aliens
undocumented workers
congress
the senate
The Constitution
The Bill of Rights
States Rights
Liberal and Conservative ideals
Hollywood blow-hards
Gay rights
Taxes....of all types.......
see...I could go on forever with the subjects we can't talk about anymore because those subjects...like it or not are indeed political and political discourse will happen if those subjects come up.
I truly understand the desire to limit the political stuff, but don't cut off your hand to spite your face.....this board is growing and it isn't just growing on the HS fooball side of things.....The Yard is where much of the growth is happening and the political threads are attracting much of the attention......
It would be like Microsoft doing away with Vista because a few people said it was stupid or some people didn't like messing with it.....vista is still a cash cow and it still brings in revenue....sometimes things we don't like are good for our overall picture...or bottom line....you decide.

Lets definantly Ban picks of dudes not dressed or only partially dressed as well.

This was the same point that I was trying to make when I posted on page one. Right now, even though this is a sports board, the political threads are getting the most responses.
This was opening week in the NFL and no one is really talking too much about it on here.
Besides, I noticed 2 threads started about Chris Simms. That is too much, he doesnt deserve it. :)

I would like some clarifications as to what counts as "political." Almost any current event could count. There are some smart people around here, except for jtk, and I like to hear what they have to say. Do we really want to neuter the Yard, which is where some of the best discussion on the board is at? This is where posters get to know each other. Do we really want to limit it to talk about cars and movies? How boring would that be? It's good to have a place to shoot the breeze about what is going on in the nation and the world. I like this board better than purely political ones, because the people are smarter and less nasty to each other.
I could defintely see limiting talk about the campaigns.
Who is complaining about posts. By my estimation, this has been some of the most civil politics talk I have seen on this board.

Bird...we totally agree....I really enjoy the talks that happen here....I learn quite bit about people and issues here.......
......sure, we have tinkling contests here, but I don't see them as being nearly what they apparently have been built up to be.
I find The Yard, and particularly Political threads to be the most enjoyable ones on this site....simply because of the level of discourse that occurs here as opposed to the garbage and foul mouths you have to put up with on other sites.....the clientelle here is decidedly more knowledgable than you will find elsewhere.
I would consider it a tragedy if the political threads were stopped or limited.
If MGMT. decides it's too racy, close it and move on.....the ones here who love this place will understand.

The fact that we even need to have this discussion should be a blatant reminder of what happens when liberal are let loose among the thinking people in society. :p
Really though. I just cannot understand why it's an issue. 1 thread or 50. If you start a thread and it's political then maybe there could be a little mark of some sort that lets everyone know it's political and those that are too dense to understand politics can know they will be looking at words/phrases they cannot understand and they can move on. Also note, these are the same people that should not be allowed to vote.
really though. if there was a way to mark it and the sissies would know they're prolly gonna get offended and they are reading/posting at their own risk. Why even police what's said? Why not just let the politik junkie have at it with each other and leave it at that?
I don't really care too much because I really dont read much of the political stuff here anyway. I have a lawnmower website I go to for that.:D
I just think it's important to not ever close down lines of communication. I know me personally have had my opinions/mind changed about some things over the last few years based strictly on talking to people online. in forums. real similar to this one. And it wasnt just opinions of what flavor soda I prefer either.

100% agree. There are many threads I don't read or comment on because of the content.
I also think it is very good to see others' opinions. As we segregate ourselves into HS football fans first, and then by team or region I like to see that many people make up these groups.
You can be a SLC Dragon/Carter Cowboy(fill in the blank) supporter and vote for Obama or McCain. Too often, in my opinion we can get along great and think someone is our best friend until we find out how they worship or vote. It's places like this that will hopefully break down those types of barriers.

well this is an off-topic board and politics fall into off-topic. i think everyone should voice their opinion and if that means creating a new thread, then they should create a new thread. i mean since it involves politics, that means it should involve government and since it should incolve government it should involve rights which should fall into the category of the constitution under the bill of rights

I voted two max. But None during football season then one or two afterwards would be great. So if possible I would like to change my vote to none. Could that be possible?

I think Wide would say that he was Wide. Or at least people that know Wide would say they think it's Wide.
and yes, I tend to be a little bit more on the non-liberal persuasion to be Wide. He is somewhat legendary around here and I'm not sure how I feel about being thought of as maybe Wide. haha.

We can read your posts and you use good grammar for the most part so you are not Wide. lol

All of wide's poster names vote "none"...so technically we have an insurmountable lead.

This idea is brilliant!

And it wasnt just opinions of what flavor soda I prefer either.
hey, I'm probably one of the most liberal here and I think this is idiotic.
Don't pin this on the libs.

I like the idea of a Political only thread through the elections and then it could be deleted.
why delete it?
if there is a separate board, one never needs to go there.
I don't think I've EVER visited the Game Film Board...

Ima say one more thing on this subject and then let whatever happens happen.
I mentioned that I do most of my political yapping over on a lawnmower forum. And I do. On that board they had a section similar to "the yard" and it kept getting cluttered with politics and God. What the board owners did was create a subsection in their "yard" part and it's taged "politics and religion" and then there is a sub for each other that's politikking and God-talk. Everybody there knows what's discussed there and knows they stand a good chance at being offended and whatnot. For the most part the moderators let stuff go there and people either participate or they dont.
Just an idea. I realize this is mainly a fooball board. Well, the lawnmower board is mainly a Lawnmower board. In fact there is so much stuff there that the "off topic" stuff is just people talking back and forth all day while at work and what not. I would think the traffic of people staying on the board would be worth it.

Because I joined Dec'07 and I've read a large majority of the threads on this board. And I was reading this board long before I joined it.

Guess I shoulda used the  instead of the :D but I wanted to be sure nobody thought I was serious.....
I'm for getting rid of it all together. Kinda odd you would come to a "5A Football" site and talk politics. Things already get off topic alot just through a post that starts as a "football" thread, let alone actually having political threads. Just my thought.

its the people.
we have a very eclectic group that brings a wide range of opinions to the table.
most sites that are opinion-oriented attract a very narrow type of people.
so things like football and lawnmower forums are awesome to debate in.

I know I said I was gonna not say anything else on the subject, but I guess I lied.
I just think it's a bad idea to close our certain topics completely. I think it's healthy to discuss whatever happens to come up with those around you. No, that doesnt need to take place on the main board but that's what The Yard is for. Talk about whatever. Because really, if you close off certain things then you close off communication. If you close off communication, what do you really have left? It would be like going to school and only talking about school. Or going to work and only talking about work.
I realize that any discussion can turn into a free4all, but really, doing away with it all together is just wrong. On several levels.
In the short time I've been in Texas I've come to realize just how diverse the place is. I've also come to realize that it's like that because the people here are so open to accept others. That happens because people communicate with each other. I realize that this carries it a bit deep for a football board. But damnit, we can all start by coming together over the pigskin. Then come to The Yard and figure out where we each come from in other things. That, in my opinion, leads to a more productive society.
Being here has changed me. Reading some of the stuff on this board over time has made me think a little more about some things. some important stuff and some not. So that's where I am.

I voted for two just so Chill has to work. I didn't like the options. I think he should have included at least 5 at a time.

Rather than worrying about what everybody else is doing, why not just ignore threads you don't want to read, as opposed to censoring them?

True... And I'm fine with that as well. I dont think we should censor any thing... I just simply am asking aloud why there is political threads in a high scool football site. Also if they make it a rule, then thats not censorship.. Just a rule we have to follow. They wouldnt be saying you cant talk politics.. just that you cant talk them on their site.
