View Full Version : Texas Traditions: The Bands

This is the first in a series of "Texas Traditions" threads I'd like to start on here. I know we have several people on the site directly involved with their school's band.

Talk about your bands and let us know about any historic, game day, in-game or post-game traditions the band has (or had) at your school. How do bands balance a demanding competition schedule with performances under the lights on game day?

If you aren't directly involved with a band, tell us about any great performances you've seen.

Southern bands and football are intertwined like in no other part of the country. When I hear the first drum rolls, I know it is game time. This is the place to sound off on one of game day's greatest traditions.

I didn't get to see this myself, but I know several people in Katy swear up and down that Willowridge's halftime performance in 2003 is one of the best things they've seen.

They did a routine to Beyonce's hit song Crazy In Love, and it received multiple standing ovations.

I owe alot to my band experience. It was the training I received in high school that allowed me to teach private lessons at Angleton High School one night a week while I attended UH. UH heavily recruited my high school for future band members. I received a band grant. This gave me enough funds to pay for my own education and Saturdays off to perform for the band in college. During my second year of teaching, one of my students made the all-state band for the first time. I'll never forget the feeling and excitement of that experience. While in high school, we went to the Orange Bowl and received first place there. I always enjoy the different style of bands and look forward to their halftime show at each game.

I wish I could vouch for a lot of cool, notable game day traditions that the Trinity Band does, but there aren't any that particularly stand out...but here's what I got:

-When I was in the band from 03-06, we always played "March Grandioso" in the 3rd/4th quarter, as well as "Hey Baby". March Grandioso has a long tradition of being played at Trinity games, as well at the University of Texas, as a lot of you know.

-Our band director would also get on the microphone when Trinity had the ball and he would ask the band how many more plays it would take Trinity to score a TD ....that was always fun, lol.

-Also, before every Trinity game, the band guys' "locker room" would participate in a weekly Pick 'em game, with score and all on the upcoming contest...the closest score would win cool prizes.

I know, not very exciting, but the band does have a lot of traditions that don't have anything to do with the football game, just marching band. Those are just a few things I could think of.

That I know of, Permian always played March Grandioso, Hawaii 5-0, and some other stuff thats still going on but I don't know the name of. What I always liked about Permian's band was that the band always spelled out M'O'J'O and P'A'N'T'H'E'R'S across the field.

March Grandioso, Hawaii 5-0 in the playoffs, Eye of the Tiger on kickoffs, Hey! Pachuco!, Hey Baby in the 4th when we're leading, Dr. Who, Land of 1000 Dances, The Fight Song (LOTS :D) on scores, and the Alma Mater (Which nobody knew the words to so we would just sing "This is our alma mater" over and over :p). Mix that with summer band starting Aug. 1 from 8 AM until 4 or 5 PM everyday in the Texas heat, memorizing set after set and getting yelled at for not playing with dynamics or for not having straight lines (the phrase "go back and do it again" is burned into my mind). It's a lot of hard work, but there's no cooler feeling than putting on a great show under the Friday Night Lights.

Abilene's band is the oldest marching band in Texas! That's how they're always announced as they march onto the field. Off the top of my head the only things I can think of that they play all the time is the Darth Vader theme while our team is on defense (which oddly enough the student body does the gator chomp to:D) and Hey Baby. Then our drum line plays a thing called "The Beat".

Here's a video of The Beat!

I remember in 1994 being in the Band and being kicked off the top row at crump stadium during a playoff game, so instead of playing music in the 2nd half we danced with the drill team.

I'm not on the band, but I am on the drill team.
We ususally do Hey Baby at every game and the drill team flashes our skirts during the song. It sound stupid, but it actually looks really cool because our skirts are red on the underside, so when we do different rows flashing at different times it looks really cool with the red and white contrast. It's definantly a fun tradition everyone loves.;)

At Lamar(Arlington) we played the Bud song(Budweiser theme song) to start the fourth quarter. Cotton Fields was another traditional 4th quarter song. They don't play the Bud song any longer.

In '88 we made the playoffs fo the first time in like ten years and the cheerleaders had us play "Eye of the Tiger" for some routine at the pep rally. Very randomly the band director suggested we play it as we marched into Texas Stadium for the game.

A tradition was born. Weird, huh?

Also, the Cheerleaders would do this goofy old timey cheer before the Arlington game. "Victorious". The cheer was goofy and predictable and my senior year some of the guys started chanting it along with them. Well, now the cheerleaders do it every game, at least that I have seen in the last 10-15 years and the band YELLS it along with them.

game days were seen as a real stepping stone for competitions...believe it or not, at carroll the last year or two, we would watch "film" of the performance during regular band class while problem spots were pointed out on the screen. the directors would obviously focus in on those spots during practice....i know, real intense...;)

competition weekends were :Censor:es because most likely we would have a game that friday night and have a competition that saturday. and competitions take up the entire day...

LD Bell never...ever...dissapoints! They've got to be one of the best in the nation.

A personal favorite of mine is the Thurgood Marshall Marching Stampede out of "MO-City". I went to the Willowridge/Marshall game back in 2005, and it was off da meatrack! I've seen Carter, Kimball, and I've seen Dunbar and OD Wyatt every year in Fort Worth. They've all put on great shows, but none of them put on a show the way that Marshall did/does.

Wilmer-Hutchins had a great band also before they shut down the entire school district.

The band that marches with pride aka Lewisville High School plays a faster version of Johnny Cash's Big John before kickoffs and on key third down plays while on defense.
The fight song is the same of Abilene High I believe. The alma mater is the same of about 520000000 other high schools, some song out of Dirty Dancing. Of course we are probably older than any other HS that uses that song;)
There is a book that chronicles thsi history of Lewisville High School up to 1993.In this book is a chapter about the band. One of the funniest lines in that chapter is, While schools like Odessa Permian and Southlake Carroll are known for winning championships in football, Lewisville is known for having an outstanding band so a divsion 2 rating is not acceptable to the residents of Lewisviille :D
I still laugh out loud at that chapter.

Haven't you heard? Football games are just an excuse to have a band practice. :D I think I read that on a t-shirt at a marching competition.

Bell always puts on a mega-show. And, they were Bands of America Grand National Championship last year.

Trinity's band is still a growing proposition. But I believe the football team really feels they're important to their games.

Trinity's band got caught in that horrible traffic jam for the Southlake game at Texas Stadium in 2006 and SLC outscored Trinity in the first half. I believe that Trinity outscored SLC in the second half once the band got there.

Lineweaver wanted the band at the Permian non-district game last year, but the school district wouldn't pay for it. You know the outcome of that game.

Oh yeah, March Grandioso and Hey Baby are on the playlist at games, too.

Well the best band Ive seen in person was Westfield last year... Something about the Baritone playing that Metallica solo ;)...

Here it is in two parts for those who care:

part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUz_clalchw&feature=related)
part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQsoXMRQrBU&feature=related)

Some things we do... We plays Mars on every kickoff after a TD... Thats really cool because its basicly everyone in the brass playing the same notes so its really loud...

Competition days can be rough if they also are game days... Like this Saturday is our big UIL competition... Our showtime is like 3:45 (It will probably be later than that)... After we get our ratings we get on the bus and drive to Tully for the game against Taylor while eating subway on the bus :)... We might be there only 30-45 mins before gametime... We usually shoot for like an hour before game time... But the Pearland game last year we got to the actual stadium 5 mins before gametime (major traffic)... That was different...

Mom, that's Mars... We do it to. Not every kick, we only did it once last night.

And there were plenty of kickoffs to choose from. *sigh*

As for BoA at Pearland, we came in 6th, our second highest finish ever after a 3rd three years ago.

Having served in the Permian Band my sophomore year, my favorite tradition there was marching into the stadium, every game. On the road, it was just to where we would enter the stands, but at home we made an entire circuit of the track, to a cadence, with Grandioso at intervals. Always fun to dodge the oranges from the visitors stands at the San Angelo Central game. *laughing*

I miss that! Our band would line up in front of us and we would march into the stadium to the drums in a single file - about 400 of us!! We never just walked into a stadium - regardless where we were playing - it was structured. We never "walked" we marched with our knees up! Very military when we moved as a group...I don't know of any drill team that still does that - it's gone the way of the tassled boots and cowboy hats!

And who can forget about the biggest band in Texas?! Allen's band is pretty amazing by their size, their show is exciting but after seeing the same show after a while I get bored (but it's like that with all the bands, so what can you do) but the first times I see it and when they add new moves, they look pretty cool.

As far as traditions: On home game days, they march down the school's hallway so we know it's pep rally time. During games I always hear them play March Grandioso first, then in the third-fourth quarter they count off the points our team has scored when we're winning only (I think), play final countdown during the fourth quarter, and finally they finish off with celebration if we have won (which I'm glad I hear it almost all the games I've been to). If we win and its a home game they come over to the student section and have a post-game pep rally which is fun.

Brazoswood took 1st place, with Westfield taking 2nd. I heard CP made the finals but had to bow out due to the football game. I would've liked to have seen it but understand about the game and all.

Not much you can do on the field with a band of that size, but I do like their spirit in the stands. I know they like the whole spectacle thing, but if they'd drop about 200 kids, they'd have a chance to compete with the better bands around here like Duncanville and Bell. Size and volume doesn't really score many points when it comes to contests. But, they sure do a good job of playing loud at games.

hm, lets see...when i lived in ep before moving to judson, i was in band...we used to play Ludacris' Roll Out (tuba section only) after the fight song when we won the game...sections going out to dinner before games...our fight song was Notre Dame's fight song, so how often do i hear that??? we also used to watch film of our performances, we also meditated during band class on game days and competition days (i slept...same thing right???)...for the more questionable traditions...our tuba section would play the trombone section in tackle football in the instrument room (carpet burns are a pain)...us tubas would go around pouring water in the other brass instruments...we spiked mouthpieces in the dirt...stuffed freshmen in tuba cases and put them on the shelf...so, as u can see, we were never bored...

ROFLOL. You might oughtta take a tour of their awards case before you sniff too much at their lack of accomplishments.

Allen Band is not about size or volume - it is about participation for every kid who wants to be part of the organization and is willing to do the work. If they dropped the freshman and the kids who invariably can't chew gum and walk, they probably COULD compete better, but they compete dadgummed well as it is. And what would those kids who were cut from the program be doing with the idle time or without the network?

Winning is better than losing, but taking good care of kids is the most important thing in Allen.

I would have to disagree with you here. Allen will not play orchestra music while marching which seems to be all UIL contest wants to hear...I just don't understand how you have amps and other non-marching items like UIL apparently wants which is referring to your comment of better bands. Not sure what other Texas HS have won the Sudler Shield as the Allen Escadrille did in 2004. "The Sudler Shield is an international award recognizing high school and youth marching bands of world class excellence".

Allen may cover the field but I think they move more then any other band as when my kids marched in the Escadrille they went from one end to the other and one side to the other, and the great part is Mr Pennington does all the movement himself.

Is orchestra music bad?

Quite a few apparently have won the award, many of the "orchestra" playing bands...

Nothing against orchestra music in the hall but not on the field as just does not seem right!

Except to the people that award the Sudler Shield. More as well, just relating to your point.

Oh I understand that those who appreciate music like it, just when you play orchestra music at the football game marching to it is why all the football people say cut the halftime down to 10 min, in times of tight budgets leave the bands at home, or do away with the bands at games. I'm not saying I agree with that but if you keep them entertained and perform with the football team where the band becomes the 12th man and such then these lines never get said. I go to the hs concerts after football season to listen to the music there but at the football games I like watching entertaining halftime shows which is what marching bands is all about and what the football fans like.

I love the bands. It doesn't matter whether they are big or small, it takes the kids out of possibly negative situations and usually places them in a positive situation. That alone makes it all worth while as far as I am concerned.
My gripe, what i simply detest, is when the announcer ALWAYS introduces them, especially the drill team, as the "AWARD WINNING" blah, blah, blah. Show me even one group that isn't an award winner or has never been one. This is so redundant and I for one feel it really takes away from the accomplishments of those that truly are outstanding. Next game listen. Both the visiting team and the home team will be announced as the "AWARD WINNING" whatever. I'm sure that there are many groups that have a large number of awards and deserved every one of them. However when each and every single one of them wins every year, doesn't that belittle those groups that really are the best. The "AWARD WINNING", the "AWARD WINNING", my God, find something original to say for a change.

There will always be people complaining about the band. No matter what they play. I have always enjoyed different types of bands, and LOVE the Escadrille.

I also agree w/the Award winning title. Dumb as all get out.
