There are so many great teams; Lufkin, Longview, Abilene, Katy and SLC of the 10-0 entering the play-offs. I think we will see a Katy vs SLC State Championship Game with the result reversed from last time. SLC to repeat as State Champs. It will not be easy for them as all the teams I mentioned and some I did not could win. I guess that covers all the teams.

Permian - 11 State Championship appearances and 6 State Titles
SLC - 6 appearances and 5 titles

I like a bit of tradition, it seems to breed success.

Until proven otherwise, SLC remains my pick. Granted, Katy was the last to show how it's done, and SV gave SLC all they could handle. Biggest surprise no one talks about is SLC defense. There haven't been many 49-45 games.

I don't know why alot of people are already picking katy and lufkin for the D2 championship. And the playoffs have not started. I am pretty sure there will be a few upsets in the playoffs, that is why we love them. But If Hays take care of round rock on friday and Lufkin wins that will be a great game. And if you look back in your playoff history books. Hays has beaten teams that have been rank. They seem to like being the underdog. They did it in 1996 when they beat texas city, in 2000 when belton was rank 4th, and in 2003 when SA Roughriders where rank 7th. So upset happens. So let enjoy the games this week and good luck to all :)

There are so many great teams in div2 it impossible to say who will be in the finals. There are some obvious ones out there like SLC, Lufkin, SV, Katy, Abilene, and Longview but anything can happen in this ridiculously loaded bracket.

I tell u guys this about D2 on behalf on the Dragons, is that the worst thing to happen to the rest of the field is they have a healthy and fresh Tre Newton. Should teams drop as many as 8 guys in coverage, expect the Dragons playoff wrinkle is to use Newton as runner, on screens, swing passes, and a large variety of different ways. And dont be surprised if the guy whos spells him on plays is Riley Dodge. I think the Dragon's would actually like to match the huge rushing numbers at the start of district were they were playing their best offensive ball. As for Katy, it should say alot that some people feel at this pt. their Katy's best ever. But because of a BIG TIME revenge factor I believe it would be best for them if Slc gets knocked off early which has more favorable odds of happening this year.

I may need fireman's gear for this comment but here goes.

I would rather see Katy face SLC and lose than not have the opportunity to play them at all.

My reasoning is this.
Both Katy and SLC are great teams with dominating playoff records in recent years. The state ring in 5A D2 -

2000 went to Katy
2002 went to SLC
2003 went to Katy
2004 went to SLC

The only time SLC played Katy was 2003 and obviously SLC would love another chance to prove itself.

Katy wants the chance to prove it can beat the team everyone considers the best.

The teams have a balance in recent championships and this year could break a tie of sorts.

Besides, I think we would all get to be on TV :D .

2005 dragons are better then the 2003 dragons.

Both 2005 teams look better compared to 2003 if you ask me.

2003 - Katy ran the ball, SLC could slow them down but not stop them. It ate the clock.

Katy is now better balanced with effective air and ground offense. The problem I see for the new improved Katy is possession time. If they simply score quickly via passing, SLC will counter with the same. The result would be a high scoring game that I don't think Katy could win. I believe Katy stands a better chance of winning if it slows the game by driving slowly, maintaining possession and eating the clock. Low score - Katy wins. High score - SLC wins.

I agree to some extent. I believe Katy would gameplan to run the ball more against SLC than against some other opponents. However, if you remember the 2003 title game, it was Katy's ability to convert 3rd downs and make big plays in the passing game that led to victory. This team has many striking similarities.

And remember also that whoever plays in the Div. 2 state final will have 5 more games before that big one. A lot of things will continue to emerge through the stages of the playoffs.

I guess you would have to be an idiot to bet against SLC but D2 is loaded with talented teams, particularly region 2, but tuff teams all around. I think there are at least 3-5 teams that on paper look good enough to win it all. There are also several teams capable of playing the spoiler. I think that this is a really good year to be a HS football fan

My pic is Abilene High Eagles. It's amazing how you guys can overlook us so easely with your predictions, and that may come back and bite you in the rear. Stats like titles and other things like that don't matter in the playoffs when it happend last year, so IMO just shut up and worry about this year. You should never count out the underdog no matter how big he is but just know how big his bite is and the size of his heart. Sorry all for being so rude, but im just trying to prove a piont :D .

IMO I say it well be Abilene and Katy in State Championship game.

Abilene had a loaded team last year and may have been the 2nd best team in Div. 2. But that was last year. I know they have Potts, but if I recall correctly several of the other playmakers were lost to graduation including the RB and stud LB. What do they have besides Potts that makes you believe they can challenge the SLCs and Lufkins of the world?

no question about it they can challenge and possibly beat them. i havent seen slc or pufkin in person, but thats how good i think we are this year. the consensus has been that our defense isn't as strong as last year, why im not sure seeing as when our offense is the unit that took a while to get moving. the defense kept us in it when we hit a funk against belton and brownwood. now that the offense has caught on we have outscored opponents in our district a combined 193 to 75. 28 of the points against us were scored on our scrub defense, and 7 scored against special teams.

LB's
jeff williams - replaced taylor broderick, plays just as good if not better than broderick
michael reno and j mccoy - reno was there last year and mccoy is better than thompson
michael baker- plugs the hole left by jerrod carroll, and hes doin a damn good job, 28 tackles in the first two games, 10 of which were solo.
DB's
stephen powell - 7 int's on the year, and he can lay the wood, just ask chris hall
wade baker - brings the load just like ryan kennedy
DL
marcus brooks - 6'0 280lbs

LYLE LEONG
jason boone- 37 rec. 487 yds, 6 td's. try and double up on lyle and this is the man that will burn you, hes had a couple 100 yard games. several times this year he has outran everyone on the field for the td, he has speed.
casey bell and xavier beaver- 1373 yds on 238 carries. they are a better one-two punch than kobey and casey were last year. kobey vs casey or kobey vs beaver kobey wins everytime, but the tandem this year is better than that of last year.
Ben gibbs - 6'5 235lbs, think jeremy shockey hands and a better blocker

I doubt that anyone really feels that comfortable with defining who the D2 winner will be with any degree of confidence. If so, then they havent been around HS football very long. I think this is remarkably the best R1 and R2 bracketing in recent memory. R3 and R4 are less loaded but equally as capable at the high end. This years playoff run will be more fun than the last several. There WILL be an upset or two along the way. There are just too many strong teams and the line is not going to be that big on a lot of them anyway. I like Katy, SLC, Lufkin, SV as favorites but I'll bet now that 1 or two of them will not be there at the semi's. I feel that any one of them could be the big winner. SLC is a proven commodity the last four years, Katy has a few surprises for folks this year, Lufkin is just plain mean this year and SV has the talent to go the distance as well. Although these are my final four pics, there are certainly others who WILL upset the cart in my opinion. I would love to see SLC/Katy rematch and can tell you that would be a huge game with a huge crowd! They were very different in 03 but they are very much alike in 05. It would be a great matchup with two great programs for the shootout at the corral. Mark my words, this would be a shootout! Katy was ball control in 03 with marginal quick strike ability, in 05 they are both ball control and/or quick strike with pinpoint passing accuracy and speed to BURN. As I have remarked on other boards.....this is a VERY different Katy team than the last several have been. I would be happy to just see SLC and Katy do it one more time. No trash talking here.....these are two really fun teams to watch and would be the best entertainment dollar ever!

Here is my 2 cents on this years version of the Dragons:

SLC Defense- Best D SLC has had in years!! I seriously doubt anyone will score the kind of points on tham as in the past. They are quick, fast & will absolutely knock your head off. D-line has depth, Linebackers play very well together & the secondary has lock down corners with depth. The secondary play has been absolutely unbelievable.

SLC Offense- Has great potential but has not played Dragon football as of late. The running game has been absent for 4-5 weeks. Of course, that has something to do with Newton sitting on the sidelines. In addition, many teams have defensed the Dragons with the intent of stopping the ground game & making the Dragons beat them with the pass. I am concerned with the running game going into the playoffs. Newton has the potential but could be rusty. I don't want the offense to rest on McElroys shoulders. He is a very good quarterback, but there is concern over his ability to elude the blitz. They have the best receiving core in the state.....Actually, I don't believe there has ever been a better core.

my only disagreement with the slc eval is with the db corps, not so much with their ability as with their depth. it has taken a hit this year to the point of not having much more depth. the season ending injuries have focused on cbs. what's left is still very good, but not any depth left for further injuries.

You know something(?), other than the one LV fan, there has been only two other mentions of LV on this thread (by pack0808 and #1 LP Fan) - thanks for the respect men/LP (we have respect for you too) . . . Although I am done predicting LV for anything, I am somewhat partial to a dream matchup - - LV vs Katy. ;) Why? Because obviously we don't have their respect . . . but that's Ok too, at this stage - we wouldn't have it any other way . . . Be
