Went and watched the Ganders play the Bulldogs tonight.
The Ganders have their best defense in over a decade.
Pretty much all of the athletic players are on defense. They have 7 guys starting over there that will be sprinters on the track team next spring.
LaPorte probably only had 5 or 6 first downs. They didn't have any in the first half. They probably ended up with maybe 100 yards tops, with about 70 of those coming on a fluke fumble that a receiver picked up and took the distance for a score. The other LP score came on a fumble by Lee's qb that LP picked up and ran in for a td.
The Lee defense is fast, aggressive and smart. This is the first time I can say that in a long, long time. One problem might be lack of depth. At least 7 of the starting defensive unit played both ways. They didn't play a lot necessarily on offense, but a few of them played probably 15+ plays and the rest played 4 or 5 plays on offense. Three of them came out with cramps in the second half.
Zac Zellars, nose guard, was impossible to handle. For whatever reason he only played on 3rd downs. He probably got 4 tackles and 2 sacks just on 3rd down plays. He may have been hurt a little which might have been the reason for the limited snaps..
Thomas Bates had a punt return for a td of about 70 yards.
Now, the offense....
Don;t ask lol
They actually have a good line. They were opening up some holes in the running game. They just lack athletic abilisty on that side right now. All of the good athletes are playing defense like I said.
It's pretty frustrating because usually the offense is great and the defense can't stop anyone.
Now, the defense is really stout, but the offense can't move the ball at all.
Final score
Lee 17 LaPorte 14

Poor LP....they just don't have it anymore. I used to be a big LP fan, but now after watching my alma matter I could not imagine LP again.

You're right.
LP just doesn't have the goods this year. They never gave up and nearly pulled off a miracle though.

They do try hard but they just don't have the athletes anymore. Did they bring a crowd tonight? They usually do despite their losing.

Glad to hear that. I just texed my daughter at UT and told her LP lost and she responded with what's new? Hopefully they have a fair year.

Just looked at the unofficial stats from the Baytown Sun. It said LP had 38 yards of offense, with 55 of that coming on the play where the receiver scooped up a fumble and took it in for a td.
I'd say in the first half LP had probably negative 30 yards of offense.

A few more points to make about this game.
Thomas Bates, sr. cb for Lee, is one of the best defensive backs in the state. He would be all district receiver if he played there enough. He is a threat to take back every punt or kickoff he gets his hands on.
Zac Zellars, sr. noseguard for Lee, is extremely difficult to block. He only played on third downs as I stated earlier, but he just bullrushed and then tossed two or three guys out of the way every time he was in there. When he gets back to playing full time, Lee's defense will be even that much more difficult to move on. He was like a slidding glass door shutting things down whichever way they went. He's probably 6'2" 230. I could see Zellars getting a low D1 scholarship offer. He was out injured all of last year, so he's an unknown to most.
Tre Murray, jr. outside linebacker for Lee, is extremely fast. He was about to decapitate the LP qb on one blitz, but luckily for LP a blocker got to him just in the nick of time. Murray is really a defensive back, but he plays linebacker in this scheme. He was the anchor on Lee's 400 relay team last year. He's probably 5'11" 175 or so, but he's got D1 level potential.
Xavier Ruben and Tim Smith, jrs og and ot for Lee. Smith is probably 6'4" 285 while Ruben probably goes 6'3" 270. They are both athletic for their size and ones to look for this year and next.
Lee has a guy that I hadn't ever seen until the Deer Park scrimmage. He's #11. The program said Tunwar I believe was his name. He's a player. Somewhat undersized for an inside linebacker, but he brings the wood every time. He also played receiver quite a bit and would probably be all dsitrict for Lee there if he could play there full time.
Dandick Jackson, jr olb for Lee, is another guy that's a sprinter. He was one of the top hurdlers in the district last year as a sophomore for Sterling. He is probably no more than 5'9" 160, but again, super fast. He also doubled as a receiver quite a bit.
Trenton Warren and CJ Mixon, jr and soph db's, round out the guys to keep an eye on. They are also both extremely fast and will be playing college ball barring injury or something unforeseen.
Lee just has a ton of speed on the defense this year. Lee had one of the top defenses in the state in 1996, and I think this one has the potential to be close to that. The only problem will be that they are going to get worn down, both by playing offense and by the offense not being able to stay on the field very long.

I wonder how Lee will fare against NS this year?

Don't give up on the Bulldogs completely.
Although they will have a rough year this year, next year I expect it to be a whole different story. They will be back in the playoff hunt and could make a good run once they are there.
Again, this year is a building year. Next year they will be strong in 22-5A.

LaPorte had two guys that stood out to me as players. One was Perkins on offense. I'm not sure why Lee kept kicking to the guy. He was obviously willing to run over a couple of guys and take it back out to the 50 yard line every time they did.
The other guy that stood out was #84. He was all over the field on defense.
Now, as to how Lee will do against North Shore.
I have a feeling that if Lee had an offense, we could stack up well with them. I am worried that the Lee offense will put our defense in horrible positions and the defense will be on the field far too long.
I think Lee matched up well with North Shore speed wise. I think Lee's defense will stop North Shore more times than not if NS has to drive 80 yards every time, but I don't know if that will be the case.

I will go to a LP game if NS has an off night. My baby graduated from LP last May and is off at UT now. I always loved LP football in the mid 90s and my husband and I never missed a game, but they just kind of fizzled....once I began going to see my alma matter I've been hooked. My daughter just hated when they were playing NS and it was hilarious in this household.

LP had some good teams in the early to mid 90's
The names Yusuf Scott, Erin Davis, Antoine Simpson, Teddy Matthews and Chris Anderson spring to mind.

I remember them all....Chris Anderson #83.....what an awesome player he was. Yusof Scott....I remember when he and his cousing would stand on the sidelines. They were both giants. I sat in front of his mom and used to ask her what she fed him....her answer was lots of chicken fried steaks and mashed potatoes. I think Chris went to Colorado if not mistaken. Teddy Matthews had incredible parens...always had their video camera in hand at the games. I think that was 1994. I remember that sad day in the dome.

Yeah, Sterling barely squeezed by them. I can't say much though, because Lee barely escaped themselves.
Deer Park should hammer LaPorte this year.

They will I'm sure...I don't even enjoy that game anymore because the rivalry has gone from fun to property destruction, etc. They have taken it too far the last couple of years......Deer Park included. DP always blames it on LP, but believe it or not there's bad kids in DP as well.

No doubt that Deer Park has some bad kids just like LP does.
I've seen both Deer Park(in a scrimmage against Lee) and LP now...
I think LaPorte will be lucky to keep it within 30 honestly. I think Deer Park will be able to do what Lee was able to do in spurts, and that's run the ball on LP. Lee just wasn't able to sustain it, because that's not even something we are used to doing. Too many mistakes and not a real good running game in the first place. Deer Park will stuff it down LP's throat though.
I predict maybe 49-13.

I can't speak for everyone, but my family and I are all doing fine. We had 3 trees down, and a lot of work cleaning up the yard, but other than that no damage. We still don't have power, and I don't really expect that to change for the next week to 10 days probably.
The Baytown schools are supposed to open up not this Monday bu next Monday. The football teams are supposed to start practicing tomorrow though, so I will assume that they might get to play a game this weekend. I'm not certain who we are supposed to play, but maybe I will get to see some football again finally.
