Who would you consider a "vince young" in 5A?

KT2000

First of all, there will never be another Vincent Young. :)

Now that we've established that.

Jerrod Johnson of Humble is the best dual threat QB I've seen this year in person. At 6'6, 230...Johnson has a great frame and moves very well. Not super fast, but plenty fast enough. I'd guess Johnson had mid 4.5 speed just based on watching him live.

Off the top of my head...two that I've seen
Arceneaux from Houston Madison and the Qb from Humble

Carter's QB Michael Crabtree is no joke.

I'll agree with KT, I don't see any Vince Young's in our current crowd.

Jeremy Claybon from Lufkin would be near the top of any dual threat list. He doesn't have the height that some others have, but he has the arm and the speed and the good thing is that he's only a Jr.

The more time goes by , the better I feel about Madison beating Northshore in 2001. It was Madison with Vince Young and Courtney Lane 61 and Northshore with Willie Gaston and Harold Hester(2000yds), and another running back whose name escapes me but he also ran for 2000yds and got a scholly to North Texas State 58.
Watching Vince Young is like watching Nolan Ryan pitch or Mohammed Ali fight or Tiger Woods play golf. You are watching something really special.
I believe Vince has the chance to revolutionize the position of QB in the NFL.
Hopefully he will come back for his senior year at UT.
There are no Vince Young's on the horizon. Enjoy watching him while you have the chance. I am 49 years old and go back to the days of when George Blanda QBed for the Oilers. So I think I have enough perspective to really be in awe of Vince Young.

Jeff Panfil QB @ North Crowley is a pretty good double threat. 6'6"/200 mid 4. speed and had +1900 yards passing this year. Should be one to watch in the playoffs.

Sherrod Harris - The man got a full ride to Texas -- According to rivals.com, he is the top dual threat QB in Texas.

Arlington Bowie

Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 206 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.45 seconds

That's impressive that you were watching Blanda at 10 years old... on the serious side I don't see an athlete like Vince on the horizon either. However, every decade or so you hear a statement that "there will never be another..." and sure enough if you wait long enough someone, indeed, comes along. I like you have seen a lot to compare to (I am well over 50) and Vince is in a position to set a new standard.

I think that the best dual threat quarterback in Texas was just deemed ineligible by the UIL by moving for what was reported as athletic purposes. Gilbert Moye is an exceptional athlete and I do not know exactly what happened with the ineligibility, but it is a terrible shame.

Hey Rancher 52,
When I was a kid the Oilers had a deal called the junior quarterback club. For fourteen dollars you got endzone tickets for 7 home games. This was when the Oilers played at Rice Stadium. I remember Ernie Ladd, Don Truell, Bob Talamini, Hoyle Granger, and many others. The crowds were not very big back then, but all the kids in the club had great times going to the games. Those days are long gone. I hope the team you are following wins in the playoffs(unless they play Northshore).

fbjones -
Those must have been good times for you (I always thought the old AFL knew how to entertain). You may not remember him, but I have an older friend of mine that played for Houston one year in 64... Staley Faulkner. He was from the undefeated UT National Champs in 63. I love his stories about playing against Staubach and the Naval Academy. I think until the last few years he held the record for the largest helmet at UT -- his knickname was "Buckethead". I don't follow any one team -- I just love HSFB and have followed it closely in the 4 states I have lived. Best of luck to your team.

christian ponder is the best i've seen. he's got great passing skills as well as pretty fair speed and a knack of when to run. i expect to see him play well at fsu. sherrod harris is the best piece of clay in n texas, and now that tu has somewhat come to grips with coaching vy, they may have similar success with harris.

Ernie Ladd? Big Cat Ernie Ladd? The Wrestler? My Aunt dated him back in the day. That's when I found out wrestling was fake. One night at the Sam Houston Colesium(sp) he was beaten to a blood pulp and was dragged off on a stretcher...right next door was the Jones hall I think...and they were having a Bar Kays concert or something and there he was...all pimped out in a suit......I was scarred as a child.

Hey dada,
I bet we have sat together at Northshore games. Send me a private message and tell me who you are. I have been agreeing with your posts for a few years now. Vince Young would have put Blanda's butt on the bench.
Go Mustangs! Protect your house this friday.

now now. blanda was in his forties or thereabouts and had been doing it pretty well for 20 years when he came to the oilers. he was a tough sob, as were all those old guys. my third cousin(played lb and guard for the bears) took my dad to a game in the early 50's and brought him into the locker room after an icy game at the old chicago stadium. he said one of the players had his hand stepped on with the cleats removed from the studs and had punctured all the way thru. blanda started playing for the bears in 1949 and played until the 70's. ridiculous.

never mind. i went to his bio and found the answer-no. played until age 48 , the last 9 with the raiders. oilers seem to have taught the astros how to give up too early, much too early on a player(see nolan ryan and his 3 no nos after the age of 40).

You know when you said that, I thought I recalled that too, but when I looked it up on the HOF site, it does not indicate that. Could it be he tried but they never signed him?? It sure seems familiar for some reason.

I must say when I watched him play Katy this year Mr. Johnson looked like a man playing with boys. I thought Texas would lose to Ohio State because Vince Young was playing for Humble. He is a great player and I look forward to watching him in Division 1 ball. :)

To the guy from Southlake:
Blanda was in his thirties when I was watching him.(Oiler years)
He was in his forties when he played so well for the Raiders.
He came off the bench for an injured Daryl Lomonica.
Just goes to show if your surrounded by talent you can look good even as an old fart.
Vince Young is light years ahead of Blanda's best days.
I was there, I saw it with my own two eyes.

I would put Keith Smith from Killeen Shoemaker up there. The kid's 6'3 215 lbs. He's fast and has a cannon for an arm. Throws a real nice deep ball. I agree that there may never be another VY, so I'll enjoy watching him as long as I can in the burnt orange.

dragonsdaddy
11-09-2005, 03:37 PM
vy is the best athlete in college ball. he will never match the stats that blanda put up, mainly because he'll never play half as long as blanda did, and pro coaches have yet to figure out how to be successful with the michael vick/vy type qb's. if he can be molded into a pro qb, he's got a chance if he can play for 15 years. too many risks of injury with the running.

There will never be another Vincent Young...never.

Christian Ponder was the best dual threat QB in the state this year. We didn't give him enough credit coming into the season, because his numbers didn't really stack up against some of the other QB's, but he had an outstanding season and it's too bad he didn't get to lead his team into the playoffs. He's a virtual lock for our 1st or 2nd team All-State QB...it will just depend on how things shake out in the playoffs.

he is the best quarterback that I have seen all year and maybe ever. He needs to be an all state pick without a doubt. I also saw that he has a lot of potential.

I don't give a crap about stats. I'm talking about ability. And Vince Young is better RIGHT NOW then Blanda ever was.
Vince is like Tiger Woods... he's gonna get even better with age, but I am saying that Vince is better as a junior in college than Blanda ever was.
I saw Blanda, I've seen Vince. Blanda never made my jaw drop. With Vince I am amazed. Even the Texas coaches or lack there of can't mess him up.
Texas has not produced a great NFL QB since Bobby Lane. That's a long time ago. But they have one now that might revolutionize the position. He is going to be better than either of the Vicks. He may never throw the short pass real well, but the out routes and the deep ball he'll handle well. And when he rolls out he will drive defensive coordinators nuts.

All these dual threat qbs owe their success to one Randall Cunningham. He was the first modernday dual threat. Too bad the Eagles ruined him by trying to make him a pocket passer and got him injured. Kind of reminds you of a certain Falcon don't it.

One of Vince Young's predecessors for dualness was a guy named Reggie Collier. He was the first college QB to pass for 1000yds and rush for 1000yds in a season. He helped lead Southern Mississippi to a brief visit to 10th in the nation in the AP Poll in 1981. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, but this was back when the good old boys still ran the NFL(if you know what I mean) and Dallas wanted him to be a wide reciever(although he had never played that position in his life) He signed instead with the WFL Birmingham Stallions for a million bucks. I think he could have been a good NFL QB, but the system was not ready for that yet. It is now and Vince Young is coming to an NFL stadium near you real soon. (I hope he stays at Texas for his senior year)

Where did you play? Was it Stephen F. Austin?
That was the best Southern Mississippi team ever. Bobby Collins was the head coach. he later went to SMU and had two really good teams and then they got busted by the NCAA. I bet UT turned em in. SMU was whuppin everybody with Craig James and Eric Dickerson.
