View Full Version : 1988 Seguin Matadors: A Reminder and a Warning

Anyone who’s assuming that Judson will beat Seguin in a cakewalk should remember what the 1988 Matador team did. I’m rather appalled, actually, that people aren’t raising the possibility of a repeat of what happened in 1988. The season before (1987), the Mats went 0-10 while still in the UIL district with the NEISD teams, SM, EC, and Judson. They were placed into an “easier” district similar to the one they’re in now starting in 1988. They went 8-2, and had an appointment with the un-defeated, SA top-ranked Holmes Huskies in the first round. It was more or less assumed that the Huskies would maul them as “scheduled.” Didn’t happen. The Mats won 34-21, and they did respectably the following week in losing 21-13 to Harlingen (CC Carroll beat Harlingen 21-10 the following week enroute to a rather rough 30-0 ending to the Rockets at Buc Stadium). The same things were being said about Seguin then that are being said now about SM, the Buffs, as well as the Mats, namely how “weak” their district is, yada, yada, yada…..I guess what irks me is that Judson was in a “weak” district in its years of emergence between 1976-79, and that was the same rub against Judson all that time. The Jay Mustangs and the TR Rough Riders learned differently about what a very good team from a “weak” district is capable of doing, and Churchill may very well have had as well if they had not come ready to play on Dec. 2, 1978. It was the same rub against SV when they were in that “weak” district their first two years in 5A. Obviously, being the “Rocket Man” that I am, I’m hoping that the Rocket faithful aren’t given a rude sting by the Mats down at East Central on Friday. Nevertheless, let this be a reminder and a warning (or a sign of encouragement if you’re a Matador) about what can possibly happen. Also, keep in mind that it was on Nov 11, 1988 that the Mat’s beat the Huskies. Judson and Seguin play on Nov 11, 2005. Like I said…a friendly reminder and warning.

Also, keep in mind Judson has had some rough experiences in the Bi-district round. The Frank Arnold-coached Huskies beat the 10-0 Rockets 21-14 in 1977, and Jay gave the Rockets a 28-0 whipping in a payback game in 1979. The year of their 1st State title, the Rockets almost got a fatal case of “cat scratch fever” from the Clark Cougars on Nov 11, 1983 in Converse (a 24-21 Rocket victory). They trailed 14-7 at the Half against Crockett in 1987 before going on to win 31-14, they had an anemic performance against Jeff in a 21-0 win (led only 7-0 at the Half), Harlandale led 14-0 in the first qtr in 1992 before Judson came alive to win 35-14. Of course we’ve also got the classic 31-0 deficit the Rockets got into before scoring the comeback against Bowie in 1996, Crockett beat Judson in the 1st round the following year, Holmes had the Rockets in a 17-0 hole in Judson’s Alamodome debut in 1998 before the Rockets came alive. Judson was dead on arrival against Westlake in 2000, and was “out in 1.” Finally, there was the 17-16 overtime affair with Bowie in 2002. True, the Rockets lived to play another day most of these times, but this litany does help to underscore the treacherous path that the Rockets’ Flight Dynamics Officer and trajectory planners are faced with.

Let this be a reminder and a warning, and serve to motivate both teams in coming prepared to play.

That's a great post and it can happen again if the Rockets take them too lightly. I really think Judson has learned this year that they won't win if they don't bring their best. The scary part is if they relax because the injured guys are back.

Wow what a great story!!!!!!! Actually I was there at Holmes during the Frank Arnold days...He was a great coach. During that time also this is when the Marshall Rams got into the huskies locker room and hung a real Huskie dog upside down slit its throat and spread dog food all over the floor during our football game against them...I had a cross country meet the next morning and saw the dog food. Any way its great that someone can remember those days when we beat the Rockets....ha ha.... But yes Seguin I have said from the beginning even to our own players that before the SC /Seguin game they better watch out as this is the surprise team of this year...JV game was just as tough. I hope you smash the Rockets and show them how they got in by the SKIN OFthier TEETH.....Its called Luck for them......I will be at the Clemens game but listening close to this one.....

Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are my favorite dogs. They ought to be shot for doing that to a dog! I hope Marshall lost when they did that.

I was up at TAMU in 1981, but if I remember correctly, in the week leading up to the city championship showdown between Churchill and Holmes, I thought I read something in the Express-News about someone (presumably a Chargers backer) hoisting a dead Huskie up the flagpole at Holmes overnight.
Grim.....very, very, grim..........

That is all fine and dandy, but most people are going off of recent history and what has seguin done recently? 1988 is all nice but that is closer to 20 years ago. I am not saying who will win, but alot of people were already cashing Reagans playoff ticket a week ago and look what happened.
Judson will be ready to play as this is where they are used to being. The question is do Matadors look across that field before the game and really believe that they can beat those 7x state champs. If they do then they will have a chance.

The coaching staff has been putting this thought in the Matadors heads all week from what I hear, something along the lines of this of this..... this isn't the Judson team of the past, the team that has won numerous state championships. Those players are gone. This is a Judson team that had to fight their way into the playoffs.

Not a qoute. Just the basic idea.

And, what I'm saying is that history has an eery way of repeating itself sometimes, or at least closely enough to reinstill the "fear of God" into some people. Going off of recent history, I don't think anyone would have expected Seguin to do what they did going into the matchup with Holmes in 1988. Then again, going off of recent history, it's just like you said, "alot of people were already cashing Reagans playoff ticket a week ago and look what happened." You've basically got two teams that are living from one Down to the next.

Good post eingedikid. Seguin is a good team. Allowing only 148 yards pg in total defense and only 74 yards pg rushing while only giving up 12 ppg. They do an excellent job on defense in swarming to the football and those linebackers play close to the line and scrap well in covering the run. Plus they gave the #1 team in SA & Region IV all they wanted last week. True, the Judson Rockets they will be lining up against are just a shell of their past, even as soon as last year. The more I hear about Seguin from you, other posters & people in Schertz, New Braunfels & East Central area, the possibility of Judson, who was fortunate to beat Reagan and squeeze into the playoffs, winning is pretty doubtful. Good chance that the Rockets played their big game of the playoffs last Friday night. I'm still going to back the Rockets despite many who feel they have no chance against the Matadors.

And I'll be there, too. It's going to require one more Apollo 13-like "Tiger Team" effort such as we've gotten the past three weeks (I'll even include the loss to Madison in here). I think we're going to have some fun---even if we go down. If the defenses are as good as they may be for both teams, this could be one of those classic "fight to the death" 10-7, turnover-filled, big-hit making games---with big scoring plays coming in a dramatic fashion as the only way to counter-act the hot defenses.

I think alot of people are forgetting that this is the same Judson team that should have beat undefeated and state ranked Copperas Cove. It was early in the season and they were healthy. Well, they are getting healthy again. Don't forget that the Rockets had as many as 9 starters out during the middle of their district schedule, which heavily affected their play and cost them some games. I think they could have beat both Madison & Churchill if they had most of their starters for those games. And maybe even SV, that game was closer than the score. I say they played up to their abilities last week due to having some key players back on the field. Noone would be giving Seguin a chance if the Rockets finished 9-1 or 8-2. But because they finished 6-4 and won a tie breaker to get in, all the talk is how much Judson and 26-5A has fallen. I say the district is still one of the toughest in the state and a healthy Rocket team can do some damage in the playoffs. Seguin has a good team, but a healthy Judson team should beat them. Go Rockets!

That is a great history lesson and I also remember some of those games, but in the end I don't see it happening. I haven't seen Seguin play this year, but I guess I'm one of those stereotypes that say weak district etc.. If Judson it truely getting healthy again I don't see Seguin hanging with them deep into the game. It might be tight at the half, but I see Judson winning this one barring major turnovers etc..

I read several posts throughout the year about underestimating Seguin etc.. , but they lost the games that mattered and from what I understand didn't score on Clemens til late in the game when it was out of reach. Judson maybe down some, but their defense has played well all year. I'll take a Judson victory in this on 17 - 6 !!

I could be way off base, but personally I think the 25-5A posters are off their rocker. I don't think any of those 3 teams are nearly as good as their fans think they are. I think their schedule has blinded their eyes.

I think our top three will compete with your top three this wee, as you will soon see! Yes 26 overall has more quality teams but that doesn't mean that your best three are better than ours this year. Just ask the Mavericks! Oh, I forgot that they've gotten sooooooo much better since that early season loss to SM while the Rattlers, SC, and Seguin have just gotten worse because of our weak district! :D :p
