i know i have only seen a few tv games for cali, so i can't comment. there probably are just a few on here who have seen several of each. i'd say if you haven't seen 30+ games of the top teams in each state, you won't have a knowledge base that would make your opinion more than an educated guess.

Texas has the best high school football programs, we have more football movies, we have more competition. our texas universities only have a few out of state players on each of there rosters. i even watched a documentary in social studies, it was to study each state and what there about, then when they got to texas the best thing about it was "Football".

I think it would be more than interesting to see those matchups. Calirfornia has had some pretty good teams over the years as have Texas. Obviously Home Field would be a advantage whereever it was played but I think you would most likely see a very even series if the games were played.
I would love to see not only the top 10 schools but take the top 10 from each Classification match up against one another.
Of coarse we will know once the authority on the matter shows up and gives us his unbiased "factual" statements.

Aren't most of the top Cali teams private schools that are open to recruiting??? I know De La Salle is, but in Texas there are only two private schools that even compete at the top level of play and neither one of them can come anywhere close to being a serious contender.

And in Texas, they cant compete for a state public title... They have their own division. Unlike other states that let them compete in public divisions like Louisiana, California, Florida and others.
And you are correct they do recruit openly.

How about this:
Trinity, Plano, Judson, Carroll, North Shore, Abilene, Permian, Allen, Katy, and Arlington Bowie play whoever Cali wants to send out. And just for fun Lake Travis and Mater Dei will play just so we can have a head to head match up of what many think are the two top QBs in the nation. you guys do know that a California team is playing a 4A texas team this week right??
A team called Scotts Valley from California is playing Alice this friday in Alice. we'll see how that turns out... Got this from the 4A boards...thanks Alice_In_Chains
California Dreamin'
By Pete Garcia
Alice Newspapers, Inc.
Long after the Scotts Valley High School Falcons leave Alice's Memorial Stadium, they'll cheer on the Coyotes from all the way in California.
That's because although Scotts Valley is traveling some 1,800 miles to open their season in a non-district game in South Texas, how Alice does in the rest of the season will weigh on the Falcons' chances of getting into the postseason in California.
In California, high school playoffs aren't determined solely by district or league records. Non-district games, like the one they're playing against Alice, are also taken into account and calculated in a points system similar to the way the BCS system credits a team for its strength of schedule.
In the simplest terms, Scotts Valley's rating for the playoffs in California is bumped up a point if Alice finishes the regular season with at least seven wins.
"Alice is one of three non-district games on our schedule, but in California our non-district games count towards the playoffs, Scotts Valley coach Louie Walters said. If you win your league, you're in the playoffs automatically. Other teams can get in on a points system. If Alice goes on and wins at least seven games, we get a point, we're going to be rooting for Alice to win every game after ours."
The Coyotes are hosting the Falcons on Sept. 5. It will be Alice's second game, but their first home game of the season.
Scotts Valley is located some 30 miles outside of San Francisco.
The school has played in Texas before. They played against Gainesville in 2005, the year Gainesville won the Class 3A state title.
The programıs annual out-of-state trip began as a reward for the school's first senior class in 2002. Those seniors started high school at the Scotts Valley campus when it opened in 1999. After that, playing in an out-of-state game became a tradition of that football program.
Since then, they've played in places like Hawaii and Alaska.
After searching the Internet for teams in need of a game this fall, Walters found Alice and said he picked the Coyotes because of the program's long and colorful tradition and because he felt it would give his team an early challenge.
"When we began looking for a team to play in Texas, we wanted a small town which had that Friday night feel, and at the same time, we wanted a quality opponent, Walters said. Alice gives us both of those."
In Alice, players, coaches and fans of the game are also anticipating the match-up.
The KIII Sports Blitz, which covers Friday night high school football, has also tagged that game as its game of the week for that weekend.
"Itıs going to be a big deal," Alice coach Brent Davis said.
"It's not every day that you get a chance to play a high school team from another state. Itıs not every day that you get to represent your state against a team from another state. I think it's going to be one of the greatest games I've ever coached in, really."
Scotts Valley is a playoff team from a year ago. The Falcons went three rounds into their region's playoffs.
The Falcons have 33 seniors coming back this season, including two returning starters on defense and five on offense. Primarily a running team, the Falcons will depend heavily on running back Kyle Hardwick, who last season set a playoff record in that region by rushing for 355 yards in a single game.
"He's really the heart and soul of our team, Walters said. He accounts for a lot of yards."
SCOTTS VALLEY Falcons
COACH: Louie Walters [9th season]
2007 RECORD: 7-5 overall, 5-1 SCCAL [tie for first place]
LAST LEAGUE TITLE: 2007
LAST POSTSEASON APPEARANCE: 2007
TOP RETURNERS: DB Brad Hartman [Sr., 6-0, 190], RB Kyle Hardwick [Sr., 5-8, 185], OL/LB Travis Awe [Sr., 6-0, 210], WR/DB Joey Bright [Sr., 6-0, 180], OG/LB Chase Shepherd [Sr., 6-2, 225], OL/DL Mitchell Spalding [Sr., 6-4, 230], QB Blake Jurich [Jr., 6-4, 210], SS Trevin Dean [Sr., 6-0, 160], RB Blaine Bariteau [Sr., 5-10, 180], RB/LB Calib Read [Sr., 5-9, 175], TE/LB Michael Pond [Sr., 6-2, 190], TE/LB Ian Gerber [Sr., 6-2, 200].

DEFENSE: 5-2 [Coordinator Jeff Metter].
THE KEY QUESTION: How they'll come together as a group [on the field], coach Louie Walters said. It's always a big question with any team. Some do, some don't. We've done a lot of team bonding stuff. It's a tight group.
CAN'T MISS GAME: Week 1 in Alice, Texas. It's our opener and it's going to be exciting for our kids to play in front of that many people, Walters said.
2008 OUTLOOK: The defending SCCAL co-champion Falcons may have graduated the MVP of the league [WR/DB Jordan Pini], but they return a preseason candidate for that honor returns in RB Kyle Harwick. The 1,000-yard rusher who rushed for the county's single-game mark in the playoffs is joined by QB Blake Jurich, who was a highlight-reel athlete in limited action last season as a sophomore. RB Blaine Bariteau is much improved too. The Falcons have good size up front on offense keep an eye on Travis Awe, Chase Shepherd and Mitchell Spalding and they should have a feisty defense under coordinator Jeff Metter. Whether that's enough to settle the grudge match with Soquel remains to be seen.

Go back and look at Trinity's playoff run last year. Trinity beat Arlington Bowie by 7, Plano took them 3 ot, and in the state championship game they beat Judson by 3. Judson had lost 3 or 4 games ?? in the regular season.

I'm wondering why that team travels. First time I ever heard of them was a couple of years ago when some Texas fan(we all know who)brought this team up. They played Gainesville and got walloped. Their enrollment is 903 and their a bottom feeder in division 3 in Cali. Weird why they keep traveling out of state. Heck a team from Alaska almost beat them last year.

in the article is says their system for making the playoffs is kinda like the BCS in which they are awarded points for a tougher non-district schedule. if they play Alice and Alice makes the playoffs, that gives Scotts Valley points towards making the playoffs. i guess they figure what better way to play a tough schedule than to play a Texas team! :D:notworthy

AMEN, AMEN, AMEN, AMEN and in case I didnt say it.. AMEN.
Other States live off the reputations and status of a few annual powerhouse programs. Texas lives off the STRONG COMPETITION within the State.
I've said if before and I'll say it again. There may be a few teams from Cali, Fla, La and even Ohio that can come into Texas and give our big dogs (Top #20 teams) a good game and even beat them sometimes (ie. West Monroe, La and MNW).
But, the overall HS competiton up and down the line in Texas has NO SECOND.
Our so called AVERAGE teams in Texas would destroy the so called Average teams in those States.
Plus, put there Prima donna teams in Texas 5A and let them go a whole season (regular and playoff) competing against Texas competition and see how those records go..

Interesting.
Having seen Poly and other teams play over the years, and being a Texas High School football fan... id say that in any given year Texas would take the series of games 6-4, 7-3....and really depending on where they play.
Why?
Coaching. The Talent is great in all three states...but coaching take the cake in Texas.
We have some great coaches in Texas, and some excellent staffs put together through out our Top programs.
Time and time again, i have seen OOS kids struggle to adjust to our play... Humble had a kid from Cali...30 receptions 500 yards his sophomore year playing for i believe a top 25 cali team at the time.....Get to Humble, and couldn't catch a cold during a game. The intial shock that CB were actually coached hurt his ability to make plays. Kids wrapped up, and followed through on tackles... This is something i don't see very heavily in states such as Cali, Ohio, and Virgina (States i have actually watched HS football games)...Florida though has some great Defensive football players...
But this is all just my opinion any way....im a homer.

in the article is says their system for making the playoffs is kinda like the BCS in which they are awarded points for a tougher non-district schedule. if they play Alice and Alice makes the playoffs, that gives Scotts Valley points towards making the playoffs. i guess they figure what better way to play a tough schedule than to play a Texas team! :D:notworthy

Name the kid.

Texas without a doubt has the best HS coaching for Football then any other State.
Some of the other States have a few programs with A+ level coaches that coach their program like a regular Texas 5A program coaching staff does. (ie. Lakeland, Fl, STA, Fl, Cypress Bay (Coach Guandolo), DLS,Ca , Jenks, Tulsa Union, John Curtis, West MOnroe, EVangel and several others around the nation. But those States on a whole pale to what the average Texas 5A and 4A HS coaches do for their programs.
Did you listen to the announcer during the FAU vs Texas game when they were talking about the differences between Tx HS football and Florida HS football when talking to the Scouts ? Bottom line was that the elite athletes were about the same # and skill level from year to year in both States.
But that the Texas kids on a whole come out more "COLLEGE FOOTBALL READY" because of the better overall coaching and facilities that the TExas kids have access to.
Mizzou Coach has said many times, "Texas kids come out of HS College football ready.";)
That's not that their talent is any better. It's because they have the fundamental schemes and systems of the college game down during HS.

Correct...and its very evident in play. The kids are just farther ahead of the curve. If you took two kids of equal talent at the same position from Top 10 programs of their respective states(Texas and Florida for example)...7 out of 10 times...the kid from Texas starts over the kid from Florida coming out of the gate... Now how they develop is on the College coaches...but Texas come fundamentally sound most times. Their is always exceptions though, you have your kids like Vince...who just need to be left alone.

B-ham plays horrendous competition. They play in the City Section. Which is a pretty bad section. Not to mention they were 6-6 that year. Getting beat 46-21 by Dorsey is never a good sign. The city section before last years B-ham didn't have a team that could compete with a Southern Section quarter finalist since 1990. 1992 the City Section played the Southern Section champ in a game they called the Reebok Bowl. The Southern Section champ Bishop Amat beat Sylmar 49-10 and they never had that game again.

So what?
What the hell does that have to do with anything.
The kid was suppose to be good, and he was....in practice.
It came out of his own mouth..."Texas is different."
The kid couldn't even field a punt...The coaches had to reteach the kid the proper way to bring in a punt. He cost us turnovers because he was so far behind fundamentally.
Kid had scouts coming to see him during spring drills before the 06 season...Michigan, Arizona, Oregon...and other. He maybe...MAYBE got 10 yards all season. We stopped throwing him the ball, because he wouldn't catch them.

Correct.
Florida has great athletes with great skill dotting their States. But, so does Texas besides what many Florida people or brained wash to believe.
Many times over the past 20 years many many Texas kids have gone into the "U" that being the University of Miami and have started at some point during their true Freshman season.
LB- Jesse Armstead.
LB- Chris Campbell
TE/OL- Eric Winston (played a ton).
Ol- Jason Fox
WR- Kevin Williams
and several others. There is a DB that I'm cant remember his name right off my head but was a stud at Miami.
I think it's pretty amazing that these kids go to the Univ-Miami (leaving Texas) and start off pretty hot with all that Florida talent to compete against.;)

And another thing is kicking.....I mean come on how bad was that. And the coaching is just funny kicking a field goal on 3rd down in overtime.....that would not happen in Texas on any level. Now that being said I know that these may not be the best teams in Cali but for a game like that to be on national television and be as sloppy and comical as it was does not make the state look good.

Texas would get beat by the private schools and public schools like Poly Tech, which has more guys in NFL than any HS.

The one thing d-train fails to take into consideration is the available resources. On a per capita basis, using the most recently available census numbers and NFL players by state (per 2007), you will find that:
CA produces an NFL player in every 174,895 residents
TX produces an NFL player in every 129,913 residents
FL produces an NFL player in every 102,534 residents
None of the 3 make the top 5 and only Fl and TX make the top 10. Just another way of looking at it.

The population numbers are skewed. More people in Texas play football than California in H.S. A better by population number would be by the number of people that actually play football in H.S. In L.A. most the people don't play football. Their Hispanics who play soccer or baseball.

i'm gettin' into this discussion pretty late, but in my humble opinion:
The top 10 programs in any given year in the "big 4" hs football states (Cali, Ohio, Fla, and Texas) are all at a similar level and would play close, competive games.
When you drop below the top level is where Texas would pull away - the depth of quality programs, the depth of talented players and the coaching throughout the state is just better than elsewhere. Of course, Texas has an abundance of weak programs too, but so do the other states.
just my two cents... :)

I have seen a lot of HS football in California, Florida, and Texas. All 3 have great athletes and great coaches and it can be argued by anyone that (insert state) is the best. However, rarely do you see people bringing up how they compare to Cali or FL. Just about everyone that compares seems to compare to Texas.
Part of that reason is due to the talent level and bragging we do down here in the Great Lone Star State and part is due to the overall atmosphere that is TEXAS HS FOOTBALL.
You can debate who is best but Texas has the best overall HS football environment.

that may yet turn out to be important. you'd think after starting for the last 3 years, barkley wouldn't have played like a deer in headlights when they rushed him last night. of course, it may have been an off night, or an off 2 nights, with 7 ints between them. like i said earlier, i hate sc anyway, so his play doesn't concern me. and i am brain-washed anyway, so he must be the best in the nation.

Barkley started since 9th grade because MD didn't have a QB. Forcier left and MD was left without a QB. Being an MVP of a camp is a lot different from a game. I don't know if you recall Chris Rix. Chris Rix was a great physical specimen, but on the field was average at best. Same thing goes for Barkley. Although Rix was a lot more impressive as an athlete. Rix had a gun, could run but was horrible on the field. Yet FSU still offered him a schollie and scouts had him high.

Between Lufkin Dunbar and Lufkin High they might have more than 49 NFL players.
Jamarcus McFarland
Dez Bryant
Mckinner Dixon
Javorskie Lane
All will be in the league.
Those are all players that were fantastic high school players, and 3 of them are very good college players. I wouldn't be too sure that all of them make the NFL. If Dez Bryant keeps up like he has then he has a very good shot, if McKinner Dixon can keep his head on straight and actually stay in school he too may make it. J-Lane, even though I love him to death probably won't the way he is right now. There's a reason that the only people you see playing at 295 lbs. are linemen and even for a full back he needs to lose a lot of weight. McFarland is an incredible talent and I fully believe that he'll make it into the NFL one day, but you don't even know if he's going to be a great college player. Odds are that he'll be great, but to go ahead and say someone who's only a senior in high school now will be in the NFL one day is pushing it a little.

I think the true test of which state has the best ball is not to compare the best teams but who has the best worst teams.;)

USC develops QBs. Carson Palmer #1 QB, Linehart top 5, Booty #1, Sanchez #1, Corp #4, Mustain #1. Barley might bust, but it is highly unlikely, and if he is they will have a top 5 QB to take his spot cause they recruit and have comp, unlike Mack, that has basically promised the spot after Colt to Gilbert.

Exactly.. that's my point also.
I've already stated several times that the some of the best teams from around the nation would give each other strong games.
I do think some of these States "high Profile teams" are over-rated though as far as being a National Top #25 or even #50.
My point has always been and still is today. Texas has the best overall "Depth of Quality HS Teams."
You put the Top #10 in Florida or California up against the Top #10 in Texas. Most years you'll probably get a (5-5) split in many of those games.
I think once you get past those Top 10 though Texas starts to take a wide margin of victory.
Just like I told Cajun. You put the Top #50 in Texas up against the Top 50 (California or Florida) on Dec.25th (Christmas) and line them up:
#1 vs #1
#2 vs #2
#3 vs #3
down to #50 vs #50.
I strongly believe Texas would win many of those games & Dominate many of them. Especially once you get down to below teams #20 thru #50.
I think the overall caliber, Team Speed, COACHING, and ect would be the difference.
PS. I've watched the last two Florida 6A Title games.
2007: MNW vs Boone
2006: MNW vs Lake Brantley
I can pretty much state without any doubt that the 2006 Austin Westlake & 2007 Converse Judson & Pflugerville State runner-up teams would of taken care of Boone and Lake Brantley without much problem.

I have been to many a highschool football game in both states. I can honestly say that if the top ten schools in Texas played the top ten schools in California, it would be a 5-5 split......any comments???
Both states have great programs with many a talented coaching staff and athletes alike, I have lived in California(Native Texan though) and can say that it would be close to 50/50 with the advantage going to us(Texas).

The population numbers are skewed. More people in Texas play football than California in H.S. A better by population number would be by the number of people that actually play football in H.S. In L.A. most the people don't play football. Their Hispanics who play soccer or baseball.
That is because just about every little town in Texas plays ball. The last I checked both Houston and Dallas had more NFL players then did LA. No other state had two cities that had more combined. Miami had the most, just ahead of Houston...

Looks like a wash to me. Ive lived in both states, and coached in 2 states. Ive seen tons of football in So. California. Ive seen HS football in about 16 states. Texas is a great football state, but it exist elsewhere also. Just ask Tyler Lee, Midland Lee, Timberview, etc... Texas has great football talent mainly based on the size of the state and the mentality about football which starts at an early age. There aint nothing special in the water in Texas. The people who get on here and make ridiculous predictions, only prove to me 2 things....they need to get outside of Texas more if they intend to run their mouth, and #2....it's no wonder people around the country get the impressions they do of Texans.
Ca. doesnt have the support or the glitz and glamour Texas has for HS football....but you better believe they have a TON of talent.
If Texans had the market cornered on HS football, then the NFL would be nothing but Texans.

Tyler Lee went (4-6) didnt make the Texas playoffs. Got blown out by several Texas teams and lost to what was probably the #2 team in Ohio that year (Colerain).
Midland Lee went (4-6) got blown out several times by Texas teams and got blown out the 1st round of the 5A playoffs by like 50-10. Clovis East (despite what Steeler says) was probably a Top #15 California team and lost in the playoffs because they were without their top 2 RB's (Slocum & Pancoti) in the playoffs. Who they (Clovis East) had against Midland Lee.
Mansfield Timberview is a Texas 4A team that probably will get 3rd in their 4A district and lost to probably a Top #3 Georgia team (Buford).
PS. My Uncle has been a HS coach here in Texas for over 20 years and is a OC for a pretty good Texas 5A "right now." He also went out to California for 4 years back in the 1990's to be an OC at a large California HS.
He's told me many times that Texas is way ahead of California (As a Whole) when it comes to HS football. Not that you dont have a few teams (mostly Private schools) that wouldnt do well.
My point.. A Texas (5A) average team (6-4) up against a California (6-4) team. The Texas teams probably wins those games 95% of the time.;)

Did you really Coach ? Because if you did you would plainly realize that the NFL and HS football have nothing to do with each other.
Many of the best teams in Texas each year (Texas 5A State Champs) dont have one kid on the team that will end up in the NFL.
It's called "TEAM WORK." I've seen Texas HS teams with a lot of (6-0/200/4.7) kids blow out HS teams loaded with (D-1A) kids.
I always get a laugh when the whole NFL thing is brought up when talking about High school football.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

DLS only travels out of its region one time per year. For them traveling to SoCal is like traveling OOS, because they have to stay there for a night or 2. Last year they played at Mission Viejo which was their one travel for the year. That game was already signed long before talks about a DLS-SLC game.
