View Full Version : Who is your darkhorse?

Who's flying below the radar? What team do you think has a chance to make some noise that isn't getting the hype right now? Let us know who is being overlooked unwisely.
Give your main darkhorse pick for each Division.

although no longer a 5A team...Kimball is being over looked they've played Ennis very close within the last few years..I believe to within a point last year....there only loss is to Carter...Ennis' only loss was to garland.....Kimball will play them tough...look for a close game....
I think FB Marshall is overlooked...got to see a few good Highlights of them and they play with heart....my two cents

Its possible that I have missed the threads, but I haven't heard much about SGP and Abilene in the last week or so. Both teams a definitely teams that could pull some upsets. SGP has a win over Trinity to prove it.

I think D2 R1 is by far the toughest road to travel so any team that is picked from that group could be a dog. I know the team I am going to pick has a 10-0 record, but I am guessing that most don't see them coming out. With all of that said:
D1 - Rowlett
D2 - Plano

Definitely South Grand Prairie.
They can win it all this year.

D1 - Mesquite
The Skeeters just simply know how to win playoff games. They could easily go 2-3 deep - seems like they do just that every year.
D2 - Amarillo and South Grand Prairie
Amarillo has played some decent teams and are 9-1. They could actually make some noise if they get by Midland/NCrowley.
D1 - Woodlands
D2 - Midland

D2 - Midland
Tut, I like the Woodlands as a darkhorse also. I wanted to put both The Woodlands and Rowlett, but I picked Rowlett above because they are a lesser known team with far less prestige and tradition than TWHS. I like The Woodlands in that matchup though.

They are not surprising at all. They are only surprising to the ones that doubt them after meaningless scrimmage games each year. ;) Let's put it together Lufkin is something like 0-5?? in scrimmage games in 5 years but 60-7 in REAL games in that same time span with 2 state semis and a state championship. If that is not a clear cut that they do not take scrimmage games seriously like Outlaw has stated over and over nothing is. All the pollsters had them in the top 5 it was only a few of the clueless fan's that were doubting them after a couple of meaningless 1 half scrimmage games where the 2nd 3rd and 4th stringers play a lot. LOL
Ok back to the thread. The Woodlands is my pick in div1 and SGP is my darkhouse in div2. SGP is div2 correct?? Lufkin better watch out for Hays also?? I do not know much about them but they seem like they are solid?? Garland is always a darkhouse everybody should be aware of. But everybody already knows about them.

D1 I don't see anybody beating Trinity in Region 1 and the Big 2 will take Region 3. That leaves R2 and R4. Rowlett could take R2 and would be somewhat of a darkhorse, but I'm going to take Judson who could provide a shock in Week 4.
D2 Midland, Abilene and SA Jay are good candidates, but I'm going with SGP.

Hey, I like to pull their chain ever now and then! :p I'm glad they think well of Midland because they deserve it.
I'm surprised nobody has asked me to fire a fellow poster yet. I've been asked to fire coaches and baseball players so far!
Maybe I'll do another round of firing before the games.

D1- The Woodlands- I feel that they are to much underrated could easily be a top ten team with 3 loses to teams with a combine record of 29-0. The showdown will be between TWHS vs Euless Trinity. I believe The Woodlands defense will have no problem shutting down the powerful running attack of Nance and company. Just a little offense and I can see them winning a state title in 5 weeks.
D2- Thurgood Marshall- With the most exciting QB in the playoffs in James Thomas who has had a breakout year with big play talent around him. I really believe they will contest Katy for the Region 3 final. but I look for Katy to get it done and make there into the state finals. But with a few big plays it wouldnt suprise me to see them playing in the last week in december.
For people that do not know Thurgood Marshall is FB Marshall. Just though I would be more specific.

You're right on Judson. I've always had a soft spot for the Sandies and would like for them to win in spite of the weak schedule and probable repeat loss to Midland.

Pearland is a team that is coming into the scene quietly. I think the school has new potential as a result of suburban growth of the area. That reads - more money, more kids and more community involvement in their football program. I was in Pearland a few weeks ago visiting my mother who recently bought a house there. There are big visible changes and I think its about to start showing positive results in their football program. Most importantly, they have a water tower with Pearland on it that keeps the small town identity alive and well.
Of the schools in region 3, I was the most relieved to see Pearland go to D1.
They may not take North Shore this year, but the time is coming.

Hah, ya got me. :D
I never said they weren't very good, I just said that I didn't think they were elite...I think they're a very good team that has a decent draw. I said before that I didn't think they would get more than 2 or 3 rounds deep and that still holds true for the most part. Honestly, North Crowley is a bad opening matchup for Midland because of their ability in the passing game; and they have a very good defense. If the Dawgs can get by NC, though, they won't face another team that can beat them through the air until the Quarterfinals...likely Abilene or SLC. I think they match up very favorably with SGP or Plano and would have a real shot to pull the upset in that third round contest.
First things first though, they've got to focus on North Crowley, who is a strong darkhorse candidate in their own right.

I like pecan sandies, too, but can't see Am. getting past Midland (I don't know much about N. Crowley). Am. has a very good team & hasn't had much fanfare, but beating Midland just doesn't seem the least bit probable to me. I've watched Am. once & Mid. 3 times this yr. Mid.'s already beaten them 38-0 (or something like that) in non-dist., so I'd be shocked if Am. can beat Mid. I guess Am. may have improved some since they met, but so has Mid.

Corpus Christi Carroll is flying in way under the radar. They're undefeated out of Region IV. Look for them to be very competitive with the SA teams this year. It wouldn't be too shocking to see them get to the semi-finals, but they would have to get past SV to do it. The close games with CC Ray and Vic Memorial this year were rivalry games. :)

They should have won the game but they don't have the heart of a champion thats why Westlake is the biggest dark horse!!!

SGP. All year long they have gotten very little attention. They can be a little skitzophrenic like they were in the 1st half against Coppell but they are well coached and are loaded with playmakers. They will be a tough out and are a dangerous group.

I'd have to say watch out for Jay in D2...Their only loss came to Clark and Jay beat them up in the stats...except for the one that counts. Jay ran away from O'Connor this last week with both TBs running for almost 200 yds each.

O'Connor is not a slouch team and it's going to be hard for SV to beat those boys from Jay. I think Jay is better than San Marcos.

11-08-2005, 01:38 PM
I said it in another thread if I were in Region IV I would want no part of Jay. They are very fast and aggressive on both sides of the ball. O'Connor got their teeth kicked in getting off the bus last week. Warren was touted at the time as the best defense in the area when they got blown up by the Stang. The Clark game was decided by turnovers. If Jay doesn't Fumble the game away they walk away with it. Jay's game plan is to put you behind early then force you to try and beat the defense with the pass. I think Jay would have some problems with a team like San Marcos, but would match up well with SV and Madison. Any team that wants to spread the field or pass the ball is asking for trouble against Jay. You have to control the clock and run the ball for 4-5 yards every play and take what you can get (that is SM football). I think Jay will be tested by CCC but they way they are peaking right now I’m not sure who in the Region can stop them
