View Full Version : Westfield vs. Cy Falls

The two teams that put up almost 100 points in last year's contest and who have been meeting in preseason for several years and in the post season 3 times, meet again this week. The two teams have alot of respect for each other. For the past 5 years, Westfield has held the upper hand, except for last year. Anyone know how to put up a poll? Who wins? Falls? Westfield?

You are quite the thread builder! DEFENSE! say it with me now, DEFENSE! You'll need it, hope you have it. Good luck. I think the Mustangs win this one, sorry pal! What was your record in 2006 after 3 games? I think it ended up ok, didn't it?(ouch, that one hurt)

Some of us fans have learned not to panic during non-district or district unless we are on the bubble for not making the playoffs. We don't typically have the talent to fill both sides of the ball to be able to compete with power teams early in the season or well coached, across the board talented teams like Westfield. But, I personally can handle the 6-4 seasons if they end like some of them have. Some very good, others even better.:D

I understand early season homerism. But really, concede that WHS has a better team than the team that beat you last week and still predict a blow out. Cy's d-backs can't stay with Ford, Logan and Watson. Cy has a good QB, WHS has 2. CY-'s offense is just too slow to stay with WHS defense. That being said, these team compete well against each other. WHS doesn't have the loss of a player to deal with this year (thank God). WHS 42 Cy-Falls 16.:)

Amen! That was a situation that no one would wish on a team at any level- let alone a HS team with a young man who was on his way to bigger and better things. But, I think we're all glad the guy got 99 years.
Back to the game, though. Every fiber of my being says "Westfield". But, at the same time, I can't get my finger to click the button and submit. Maybe I'm just not wanting to jinx the team I root for so hard. Of course, the 60-70 guys on the sidelines, along with coaches, might have more influence on the outcome than someone clicking a radio button on a poll.

Not one tiny bit (funny how things like state championships makes it all go away), but I bet that a$$ kicking falls took in the state game still stings a little. - COUNTER
Round 1 recap:
Cyfallsmom using the jap effectivley.......Fleeman not throwing punches...can't get past the jap......easy round so far for CFM...... Fleeman with a big body and counter left wobbles CYM, but she's still standing......bell rings.
Even round. 10-10

Again, Westfield's offense will be way better than Bryan's offense. Westfield's defense will be way better than Bryan's defense. falls lost to Bryan by 8 so I would say you could safely double that to 16 and then I will tack on 10 for good measure so Westfield by 28ish.
On the other hand this could just be a matter of falls' poor coaching not getting their team ready for the opening game of the season like the last two years. - UPPERCUT
Fleeman comes out like man possesed.......Ripping shot to the midsection followed by an uppercut....CFM is backed into a corner......she needs to mount some sort of offense or the ref might stop this.

Shows what you know son - this is not a matter of poor coaching at all - Bryan does and always has matched up well with us. Neither has ever had a blowout and it's always an exciting game. I got the feeling last week that some things were being worked on which makes more sense in game one than in a game that counts for something. And don't underestimate Bryan either. Were you there? I am both. I especially like the 13-5A teams and believe they put up a good game each week. Westfield takes scrimmages a little different than other teams. They take of business, don't show anything and look for weaknesses in their play. They never discuss how they did against the other team. Their focus is improvement, kinda of a lunch pale mentality in that regard. WHS play Falls in 2 7 on 7 games. I saw them. Good QBs and receivers on both sides. It would not surprise me to see both offenses struggle to gain an advantage because of the defenses. WHS's defense is ferocious. At times, they scare the average observer. They hunt the ball. Good luck to Falls. The Mustangs look forward to playing such a talented team.

I have seen the lunch pail attitude in the teams of the past. Meekins really has something going on over there. My nephews played for Westfield. I think one before Meekins and one after he got there. The younger was the backup qb that came in when Beasley went down in the Judson game. I have alot of respect for the Westfield program. They get it. And the Falls program, coaches and players, has alot of respect for the Westfield program. Raffield wants to challenge his teams each year with the best around. He has targeted Westfield as a measuring stick for his teams each year.
And Falls is not that talented this year. They are going to have to rely on heart this year. Westfield is ranked #6 in the State this year for a reason. Great coaching, talent and effort. Falls is going to have to bring their A-game if they are to think about winning this game. I think they will bring the heart.

Westfield plays a very physical game. They try to intimidate thier opponents
in to making mistakes. They play a down hill game. When the #1's competed
we did fine. They play a down hill type of offense. They come straight at you
and hit you square in the mouth. I like their style with no bull. I am not being

That is what my son misses the most. He has tried to re-create that same feeling many times. His senior year, he went to Coach Mac and asked to be on the baseball team. Coach Mac did it. When he got to college, he roomed with and hung out with the guys from the Falls football and baseball teams. His soph year at A&M he joined a frat and got involved with intramural sports. Once they experience that bond they find in sports, it takes them over. The kids take care of each other. It is really amazing to see that. Makes one feel good as a parent.

Also, Westfield has always been physical. They play fast and hard. When a team takes the field agaisnt them, they better strap it up, because they are going to bring it hard. And I don't think they do it to intimidate....they do it because that is the way they are.

Apparently someone in the crowd threw the towel in trying to save Mom so I guess the fight really isn't over.
So falls elite coaching staff can't manage to win one single season opener against Bryan even though they were favored in every game? Who cares if it was or wasn't a blowout like the title game, a loss is a loss Mom. I'm sure your coaches were "working on some things" last week and that is what caused them to lose. Is that the case for the last 2 years also? Of course I wasn't at that game, why would I want to go see Bryan and a second tier team like falls?

The thread is about Westfield vs cy falls and I gave my opinion on the game. Is everyone else that is not a falls or Westfield fan wrong for making a prediction?
Bud is my drink of choice when it comes to frosty cold adult beverages.
Actually I think Katy is about 5 up on falls right now or are you talking about that regional final win in 06 that just ended up getting falls' butts handed to them in the state game? I not only will give you the 06 game and say congrats, I will also say nice state game.
Doesn't take a perfect season to win a state title but they sure are nice (00 and 07). How many perfect season state titles does falls have? Semi final wins? Regional championships? District titles? Shouldn't take you long to look it up.
Please get up and keep fighting.

Interesting. Never saw that from a Westfield team. This would be a first. Not to question your experience, but I will wait to make judgement on that until after the game. They play tough, but have never seen dirty from them.

Count the number of times the helmets come off.
We had referee's at the scrimmage that said, "we could throw flags on every
play, protect yourself at time". Then they swallowed their whistles. Probably
not going to happen in a game. You probably wondered why I made the above post earlier. I think Westfield wanted to run over the little JV team from

According to my sources, the Mustangs came out of the scrimmage saying their zone blocking was off and the new O-Line coach was going to work on that (yes, full Denver Broncos cut blocking passed on from Kyle Shannahan to Major Applewhite to the new OL coach who was a player at "The Cuse" when Major was there for a year).
Haven't heard much about the Defense, but we've seen what they can do when their heads on on straight. No distractions. Definite desire to make amends for last year.
And regarding parking (since someone asked)... park behind the stadium and school. Do not park across the street by Burger King and Sonic. The owner of the shopping center is starting to have cars towed.

I can't wait for tonight's game. It'll definitely be a tough one for the Eagles but hopefully they can pull of a win. We're usually able to compete with Westfield, so hopefully this year won't be any different.
Completely off topic, but Cy Falls' principal, Dr. Worthy has resigned. (I'm not sure if anyone knows) He's has another job opportunity, I believe as a superintendent of something... but I guess he decided his time at Falls had come to end. I wish he'd stay, he really is a great and caring individual.

Falls recievers will have to catch the balls this week and Norris needs to hit the holes and edges quick to avoid the swarming WF defense if they are to compete in this game. Once Falls can get a little more isolation on the defenders, like last year, they stand a better chance. If they try to pick through the defense there will be too many of them around to find any holes to run in.

My thoughts on this one:
1) I hope that Westfield is just THAT awesome - would make me feel a lot better:rolleyes:
2) I hope that the Eagles are just suffering some early season "jitters" ..especially with the two Roughing the Kicker penalties and the many dropped passes and kickoffs.
3) Northshore - a word that strikes fear in me right now:o
4) All in all, I just think Westfield was that good. Our defense has had two pretty sluggish games but, I am just looking at this as a fan. I am not a coach or one of those players on the field putting all of their heart into it and if this goes the way that most Cy Falls teams have the past few years, they will get better sooner rather than later.
5) And what way to get better than to be tested in a BIG way with WF and NS back to back:eek:.
These boys were down 35-7 at the half but you never would have known it the way they ran onto that field after halftime - you would have thought they were ahead! Good for them! That's the attitude that they need right now. They had a great first possession and scored and then the first possession of the second half, they held that ball for almost 8 minutes!! I believe they will have to do a lot more of that ball control, especially against the really explosive offenses. But, again, I am not an expert or a coach - just my .02...that's all.
We're all behind you Eagles - no matter what! I know I get irritated during a game and get upset but, in the end, it's all about a group of young men with goals and aspirations...we are just there to support you all...good and not so good.

Let's get off the soap box..
Pull it together 15-5a this is starting to get embarassing. WR's struggling, especially without two of the studs that are now off the time. It's a shame..but the rest of 15-5a aren't making much noise either.

Raffield wants the best non-district teams he can get. This year was able able to REALLY get them lined up. Bryan is always solid, nothing fancy, just big with good speed and solid. Westfield, well what else can be said about that collection of specimens? Looking at them during pregame warm-ups, every single one of them had the same build pretty much. They just came in different sizes. Amazing. Their offseason program must be a bear! Next week like you say is North Shore. Nuff said there.
Falls OL and defensive front 7 played a pretty good game last night. They are progressing very well. If they stay healthy, they should be pretty strong units by mid-season.
The young (and small) db's were no match for Westfield's recievers. The recievers were fast, disciplined in their routes, had about 12" height advantage and caught everything thrown at them. Westfield's qb was also very accurate with his throws. I think it was the passing game that got Falls last night.
Again, the dropped passes for Falls was their achilles heel. Catch those balls last night and maybe the score is a little closer.
I don't care for Gray having to run the ball in order for us to get 1st downs.

Norris's run was impressive - though futile. But, it gives us hope. He needs to get the ball in his hands a bit more IMO.
Westfield was the better team and it was their first game of the season and they're playing that well. WOW!! And like Booster said, they are solid - not all of them are big guys but they are solid as rocks.

From last night's play? I didn't see too many injuries. There was the one punt (I beleive) where a player for each side was shaken up, but they both walked (limped) off. Outside of that, and some cramps from the heat, I didn't notice injuries. They going to be ok?

I am really beginning to think so. Their OL & defensive front 7 are really beginning to look good. Westfield only gained 86 yards on the ground. A TON through the air! (Well, 255). But the run defense was the weak link last year, so this is looking good so far.

Well, you can look at that ground attack 2 ways:
(1) they didn't need the ground attack with the lawfirm of Logan, Watson, Walker, and Ford in rare form, or
(2) the OL and RB coaches have something to work on this weekend.
The fact they had it at 35-7 at the half is probably the biggest reason for the low total (along with the 6-yard possession). But, we'll see the adjustments made next week by both teams.
