Here's one I saw today on the NFL Network. Sam Baker broke into the NFL as a fullback, but when he filled in for the injured kicker on his team, he did so well he became the starting kicker as well as the punter and never ran the ball again. He played something like 15 seasons as a kicker/punter. Unheard of in today's game. What 4 NFL teams did he play for? I got 2 out of the 4.

Having the encyclopedia helps. I have some good baseball books. "The Umpire Strikes Back" by Ron Luciano, and "Sports Wit" by Lee Green, are my favorites.

In Ron Luciano's book, he talks about the exploding fastball, thrown by none other than Nolan Ryan. The ball came in so fast, that it exploded. An optical illusion of course. But ol' Luciano couldn't believe it, he said he never saw anything like it in his life.

close...1951 was his rookie year.

He was sent down to the minors and almost quit...but when he came back up....the rest is history. The Mick is one of my favorites of all time.

He hit .267 that year...and didn't dip lower than that again until 1964...Wow!

You rarely see guys chewing tobacco anymore...not like when I was a kid...everybody had a big hunk of it in their jaw.

Bagwell used to get a huge chunk of tobacco...then chew up Big League Chew...then wrap the gum around the tobacco and chew it...

come on prime, i gave you the link to access WEEI on the radio remember :D I love listening to that whie at work or at home. 2002 was a special year due to some of the acqusistions we made, plus it was the ending of the Douqutte era at seasons end.

Pendelton, Gwynn would analyzie each wing in that annoying voice of his. However Tony was awesome and played the game the right way. I loved watching him and TP play. Another one of the past Braves who I loved was Mark Lemke, the little big man. He was awesome.
