Bryan takes the long bus ride to Leander on a short week of practice. If all things are equal (and I'm not saying they are) does it affect the outcome?

Leander is starting several new starters on offense, but were able to put up 24 points on state finalist Pville when they return 8 starters on d. This may not be one of Leanders most talented teams, but i like what Taylor Ratcliff brings to the table.

well if it wasn't for the pflugerville defense the game would of been more lopsided. Pflugerville had a hard time stopping leander on the first two poss., after that they shut leander down. Pflugerville offense gave the ball to leander in the redzone a couple of times. Can't blame the defense when the offense can't hold onto the ball.

I don't have the stats in front of me but I remember being surprised that neither team had much more than 200 yards of total offense. There must have been some short fields on both sides considering the score.

All things being equal, I think the long ride does effect the Bryan team. Leander should win regardless, but that drive is not an easy event for any team especially if it is on the yellow dogs.

From LeanderFootball.com: Steve Gideon has been the Head Coach of the Leander Lions since 2003. He has been a coach at Leander since 2001. His teams have won 5 District Championships, 5 Bi-District Championships, 3 Area Championships and 1 Regional Championships. His teams also were Regional Finalists twice and Quarter Finalists once.
How does Gideon do it? Does he coach to a system and plug in players or does he adjust the offense to fit current talent?

he coaches to a system and plugs in the players. Seeing my son go through his system I can tell you he is a coach that knows how to get the most out of his players.

In most cases i would say he has a system where he likes to plug in players, but that wasnt the case my senior year, where he basically changed the entire offense to fit our players.
A typical Leander team in a perfect world according to Gideon, would have a big oline, a duel threat qb, a rb that would be considered a "workhorse", typically one big play wr, and a fairly small but fast defense due to our 3-3-stack scheme. Leander has always run the spread under gideon, but its a run based offense that centers around the zone read. Most of the passing yards in the offense (unless its a obvious passing down) come from zone read play action.
However, my senior year (2005-2006) we had a small oline with an undersized pocket passer type qb, virtually no running game, but 2 d-1 athletes at wr that were jrs and and two more srs that were 1st and 2nd team all district the year before. We adjusted our offense to run sort of a texas tech style offense (very similar to what Lake Travis runs) and passed the ball up to 40 times a game. That year we were 10-2 (9-1 in the regular season and district champs outright) with our season ending at the hands to you guys district champs Copperas Cove.
IMO, and obviously i have a biased opinion, Gideon is the best head coach out of 16-5a (Williamson County), 25-5a (Travis County), and 12-5a since they are all neighboring districts.

He is the best 5A coach in Austin area next to Hill at SV. He can coach!

I would tend to agree with you, but you have to look at what welch has had at cove talent wise, and what Gideon has had at Leander. Since Gideon has been the head coach Leander has had 6 division 1 scholarship athletes. If i'm not mistaken, in the 2005 season where Leander played Cove in the playoffs, Cove had more than that on their team (not including Brent Garner, who may have been the best football player of them all). I'm not saying Welch isnt a good/great coach, but as far as d-1 talent goes hes done it with ALOT more than what Gideon has had to work with. IMO he's very comparable to Hill at SV since he's had this kid of success in region 2, and hill has done it in the much weaker region 4.

welch has never had that luxury of picking from a big pool.Cove has always been the smallest in our district. they are barely over 2000 this yr

Leander has made great strides, especially the past 10 years or so. Before that they were like Cove and not very good. Cove has been stronger longer but i know when we match up against Leander it is going to be a good game when it happens. I remember when Cove would beat Leander and then one year they shcoked me and beat us. I ate a lot of crow at work. Yuk!!!!
I don't know Gidion other than he is a good coach but being a Cove alumn i have to take Welch any day. He is a good man and one i know that is respected and is just a good ole person.

So is Welch a system guy or does he just coach what shows up on the field?

Write in: AMC ;) Even if Bryan wins, it makes the district look better. :D
Seriously, though, I think Leander has been looking a lot stronger the last couple years and Bryan just won't have enough to get it done. Then again, I'n not exactly an expert on this district. :)

The last 10 years have brought tremendous growth to LISD. In much the same fashion, Cedar Park is building/has built a solid program over the past few years without the benefit of abundant D1 talent. The fact that CP/Leander and now Vista Ridge are drawing kids from the same pool and CP and the Lions continue to field strong teams and now VR beats the 25-5A champs in their first 5A game is testiment to deep talent pool each of the schools draw from. Coaching certainly has alot to do with the winning, but all three schools are fielding their share of athletes--maybe not necessarily loads of D1 talent but some really good kids/good athletes. JMO. The area feeding CP/Leander and VR continues to be among the fastest growing in Centex.

Well, the Master Gideon couldn't pull it out tonight as Bryan beats Leander 31-24. Leader was not impressive against Pville last week even though they pulled out the win with 4 lost fumbles. Not surprised at all by this score. Tells you how bad Pvlle is right now. On a side note, I am shocked by how bad Westlake is. Wow, they are tiny and soft. There is no way they make the playoffs even in their weak district. Wow are they bad. Not impressed with Travis either.

Great win for the Vikings tonight. Everytime I come to AC Bible stadium, I leave impressed with the atmosphere and the sportsmanship of the fans. A great place to watch a football game. Thanks for the hospitality!
