Arlington Bowie Coach Anthony Criss informed his players and coaches prior to the game Friday night against Cedar Hill that this was his last game as Bowie coach.
He will be re-assigned for the remainder of his contract with the Arlington ISD.

Through 6 seasons, he compiled a record of 13-47.

Criss was preceeded by Mike Stovall (1991-1999) and Jerry Griffin (1974-1982). Through 22 seasons of varsity play (1975-1982) and (1992- present) , Bowie has never made the playoffs.

The good old boy system? Not really sure.
He was a good athletic coordinator for the school.
State track title and Girls basketball title on his watch, as well as deep playoff runs by other teams.
But not good for football.......just the way it went I guess.

Compared to the other coaches you listed he was cut short of the school's normal allowance. It'll be interesting to see who applies for the job because there is talent to work with if they can find the right person.

This sounds like a similar situation to Westfield here in Houston. Westfield had not done a thing in football until Ron Lynch got there in 1999. He turned out to be the right man for the job, so hopefully Bowie can also discover someone who can relate to the student-athletes and establish a foundation.

I know that he was not given the same time frame as his 2 predecessors, but he was in a different situation that they were.

Both the late Jerry Griffin and Mike Stovall started their coaching tenures at Bowie with only JV teams after the school's opening, or re-opening.

I played for Stovall. Stovall had to deal with a AISD decision to make Bowie play in 5A with barely 4A numbers between 1992-1994. Bowie had it's first year of 5A enrollment numbers in 1995-96.

In addition, Griffin and Stovall had to deal with start from absolutely nothing --- lack of adequate facilities etc, no established booster club,, etc...

I think that in terms of comparrison to the situations, Criss 6 years at Bowie coaching Varisty, Stovall's 8, and Griffin's 8 are roughly equivalent. Leaniency must be given to the 2 coaches that had to open the school.

Talent wise, I will say that only MacArthur and SGP had more talent than Bowie out of the teams we played. I don't think coaching was a problem either, the guy is a great coach IMO. It's just that Bowie is a "gangster" type school where there is no discipline or leadership on the team.

Not sure how you can say that -- with Sherrod Harris and the coach's son as the team leaders --

Maybe now they'll be dropped from our non district schedule. It was gettin a little redundant and a change would be welcomed by most JT fans.
