Texas attorney general affirms statewide standard for GPA calculation

From Staff Reports
AUSTIN – Attorney General Greg Abbott has decided that all high school graduates in Texas will have their grade point averages calculated the same way beginning with the Class of 2009.
Affirming a law passed by the Legislature last year, a legal opinion from the attorney general says the standard method for computing a GPA will be determined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and be one of the main criteria for admission into state colleges and universities.
The new GPA will be used to determine the top 10 percent of students at each school – a factor in admission to the state's flagship universities.

This could affect no pass/no play, couldn't it?

It says the GPA will be calculated the same, not the grades themselves...so I dont think this will have any of the desired results.

This has nothing to do with eligibility. GPA calculation isn't part of HB 72.

What about the credits for athletics? Some programs lack seniors because of this problem. Kids drop athletics to graduate or can't be in off season to get biggger, stronger and faster cause they need credits, so they come to practice after school, while most varsities and JVs practice the last period of the day. This leads to kids quiting.

In my opinion, Grades need to come first. No pun intended, there needs to be a level playing field in this matter.

I know u guys probably dont wanna hear this... But I dont like it... At my school we have a weighted scale at the moment where Higher level classes get more GPA for the grade... But now u can be valedictorian by going lower level classes, while I go through AP classes working much harder and get As and Bs... I dont think thats fair to us....
What do yall think

i gotta agree with you.
i took those AP classes so i could coast and get the same grades as people gettin an A or B in regular classes.... but my "coasting" was harder then what other people were doing.
