We've been to Joe Allen's, Harold's, Lytle Land and Cattle, Copper Creek. Looking for something new. Suggestions? No chains, please. :D

Towne Crier on Business 80 off of Judge Ely near the stadium. Sharon Allen's Bar-b-Que across from Towne Crier. Cypress Street in downtown Abilene. By the mall you have Logan's, Texas Roadhouse, Red Robin, Olive Garden, Casa Herrera, El Chico, Rosa's, and Jason's Deli.
Good luck MOJO.

Hmmm well since you're not looking for chain restaurants, Joe's Pizza on Treadway or there's one on Buffalo Gap is really good. It's owned by Albanian immigrants I think. Delicious pizza, salads, strombolis, calzones, etc.

The new Bonsai Japanese Steakhouse is pretty good. Just off the Winters Freeway and South 14th street. Next door to Abilene Seafood Tavern.

How about some non-chain authentic Mexican Food? Try Los Arcos on Ambler Street or Mary's Restaurant on S. Treadaway. There is also Oscar's which for you would actually be on the way to the stadium. You would just exit early at Hwy 351 and hook a left under I-20 and it is behind the hotel on your right. Of the ones I gave you, I prefer Los Arcos.

I have eaten at the Red Robin here in The Woodlands once. Way overpriced for what you get, IMO. I'm not telling you there's no way youi would enjoy it, but I felt like it was a bit pricey for burgers and such.

i highly recomment NOT going to sharon's lytle land and cattle. she has gone up on her prices TWICE in the last three months and it is completely outrageous. the service has gone severely downhill as well. I would recommend Bonsai on S.14th and the winters freeway, Fuji's steakhouse on S.27th and Barrow, Szechuan is just east of the S.1st and Willis intersection, The Beehive in downtown, Joe's italian as mentioned earlier, Larry's Better Burger on Treadaway and N.13th is a hole in the wall with the best burger and homemade milkshakes in town hands down. Harold's BBQ.

Fuji Steakhouse is a little down at the heels but pwns nearly all Japanese steakhouses I've eaten at. I still get cravings for Towne Crier on Hwy 80 (MLK), it is like walking into a time warp. Second Joe's Pizza on Treadaway. All of their food is good. Harold's is legendary but be forewarned they are not always open on weeknights, unless things have changed since I have been there.
If you have time drive to Perini Ranch in Buffalo Gap.
Stay away from chains. There's too much good food in Abilene to eat chain food while you are there.

Perini's is delicious, but he'd probably have to call from Odessa and make reservations then worry about finding and being able to get to Shotwell on time. However, It's my personal favorite.

Don't kid yourself....they all do that whether they admit it or not. If you only knew what restaurants did when noone is looking. Besides the food at Los Arcos is still pretty good even though it has gone down hill a little the past couple of years.:Music

Don't go to Fuji unless you don't have much of an appetite. The only 2 times I've ever eaten there I left hungry. And, as far as Japanese food goes, it's middle of the road at best.
Joe Pizza is good stuff, I prefer the one by the mall.

TexMex - Monterrey Restaurant or Rosa's Cafe
Steak - Perini Ranch or Lytle Land & Cattle Co.
Asian - Fuji's or Szechuan
BBQ - Harold's (best damn BBQ sandwich this side of Heaven) or Sharon Allen's
Italian - Joe's
jtk would also recommend the Dixie Pig Diner for great lunch specials and typical diner fare.

You've got to be kidding. Rosa's is the best Tex-Mex chain in the world and one of the best in Abilene. If you want just burritos or tamales, you could do better at La Popular or Mary's, but in terms of their full menu, Rosa's more than holds it's own if only for the best tortillas in the city.

I think perhaps you are mistaken. Harold's has always been in the Christian family. Harold Christian, who handed me my BBQ sandwich the other day and talked to me about Colt McCoy's season, is the son of the man who opened Harold's in 1956. Maybe another member of the Christian family has opened a place in Tuscola, but the Christian family still does and has always owned Harold's on Walnut.

I was in Abilene this past weekend for the air show and we went to Perenni Ranch (Sp?) Steak house in Buffalo Gap and it was amazing. It's only like 15-20 minutes away from Abilene.
Also the chicken place off of 83/277 that we went too was good. It is almost exactly like a babe's.

It's gonna be 20 bucks a person give or take a few dollars depending on what you order. Our bill was like $120 for 4 people but that was with 3 people drinking beers plus we ordered an appetizer. I think my steak was $24.95. But it was huge.

Trojanalum693

Trojanalum693
05-14-2010, 04:21 AM

da hawaiian

Ofcourse you remember a 5-5 Trinity team making the state game in '93? Or how about a 4 loss Judson team making the State game in '05? I love me a good cinderella story (except if it's against Trinity).
Trojanalum693
05-16-2010, 09:06 PM
I don't remember that 5-5 Trinity team making state because I was still pretty young. And yeah Judson was 6-4 but still it means that the regular season means nothing and you can go 4-6 and still make playoffs. At least they should give the team with the better record home field advantage.

Casa Herrera near the Mall has been mentioned a few times, so I wanted to add my parents go there every week. Friday night when no AHS game or they don't close early (like this past Christmas Eve), and Thursday night otherwise. I personally look forward to going there when I can while visiting. I also really like Square's BBQ on Leggett St just north of North 1st St as Leggett bends from N-S to E-W direction and turns into North 6th st. Harold's has been said and his brisket is still #1 in town, but Square's is close and their smoked chicken is ungodly fabulous.
If you like foods from the Far East, give "A Taste of Asia" noodle house a try on South 1st just west of Sayles Blvd. It is sometimes called "George's" because that's the owners first name, whom also owns the A.M. Donuts in town, and enjoys interacting with the customers. Taste of Asia is family operated and offers various dishes from various Asian countries to include Thailand and Vietnam. Its also the same building of a once very popular pizza, spaghetti, and lasagna family restaurant was for decades (worked part time there throughout my Junior and Senior years at AHS).

Joe Allen makes a good steak.....I prefer Roadhouse. As for Lytle Land it was way overpriced. Now I will agree that Perini's is good but I was listing places in Abilene. As for places in the surrounding area The Shed out in Wingate makes killer KC steak.
WINGATE
wow, there's a speck on the map you almost never hear about!

Is the Shed still open? Someone told me they had closed down. I ate there a few years ago, it was good stuff!

:)
Casa Herrera = BEST mexican dining EVER.

I tried to find The Shed out in Wingate a month or so ago. I saw nothing in that almost ghost down except one old guy, a few rundown houses, a closed gas station, and a junkyard that looks straight out of a Steven King conception.

I worked with Chris at Lytle Land & Cattle for a few years. Awesome guy that I really hope succeeds in this venture. Seems like he's doing really well

Gonna do some damage at JA's tonight. Almost as excited about that as I am the game afterwards. Then tomorrow, on to Euless.
