View Full Version : Whats up with all the Classics?

I've started to notice that at first when the Texas Football Classic came out it was the premier event around the state to kick off the high school football season. Lately I've starte to notice that now we have other classics like Round Rock Classic, Tom Landry Classic, East Texas Classic. It just feels like its stolen the luster from the Texas Football Classic in the Alamodome. But at the same time, most time wouldnt travel all the way to San Antonio to participate in it since they must forfeit a home game. So I can see the justification of it. The TFC is still king with me though.

Discuss.

Dave Campbell's Football Classic is a joke now. I remember when they were inviting teams like Katy, Judson, Permian and Midland Lee to the Alamodome. I would make the trip down to see the games. Now I would not even think of going.

I feel the same, but it's largely because of my geographic perspective. Were I an SA or Austin resident, I would think it was great. I do feel like it used to have a bigger statewide appeal, back when teams like Stephenville, Midland Lee, Southlake Carroll, Permian, FW Dunbar, etc. were being invited for several of the games. Used to love going, but now I prefer some of the events in the metroplex and/or Abilene (would've been spectacular this year had the OOS teams not fallen through). The biggest problem with these Kickoff Classics, IMO, is that a lot of them really reach for filler teams/games. For example, does the Herbstreit event at Texas Stadium really need to showcase Justin Northwest to the nation? Adds to an already long day unnecessarily, IMO. Most folks who live outside of the town of Justin just really don't care to sit through that after they've already watched two games.

Not enough people are willing to travel from Dallas or Houston for a regular season game in the Alamodome to make it worth-while. It's less expensive to bring in CenTex teams to play (fewer buses, less gas, etc.), so DCTF pays those teams, and since they're closer by, their fans are more willing to make the trip.
If DCTF rented out Texas Stadium and Reliant for triple-headers of local teams as well, they could get some big matchups in a statewide trio of "Classic" games.
But, if you're Katy and North Shore, do you agree to travel 3-4 hours by bus (or more depending on traffic) to play a game you can play locally and have more fans at... just for the honor of playing in a "Classic"? No. If they really wanted a big venue, they'd rent out Rice or Robertson for the game the next two years (so neither has a homefield advantage either year).

Personally, I'm a big fan of it. Gives you an opportunity to see a lot of good teams and talent in one venue. Kinda like playoff time come early. I didn't realize how many there were until a came across a schedule of them all -

Agreed. I am sure it can be overdone and it probably will be ... but I am liking it as well.
