Hawks scrimmage Keller at home

After a week of paradise, weather-wise, according to Hebron football coach Brian Brazil, the Hawks opened their second week of practice with a goal at the end of the week.

At 7 p.m. Friday at Hawk Stadium the Hawks will get to hit someone other than teammates when they face Keller in a scrimmage. The junior varsity and freshmen scrimmage at 5 p.m.

“I just want to see us play somebody,” Brazil said. “I think our kids are sharp and are looking good in practice. The coaching staff just wants to see our kids knock heads with someone else and get a feel to where we are at this point and time.”

With five starters back on both offense and defense, Brazil said the squad is much further ahead of where it was last season.

“Last year it seemed we had so many questions marks,” Brazil said. “As far as our starters and top backups go we feel everything is in place. Offensively we are moving around and doing everything we want. I think we are way far ahead of where we are defensively.”

Friday’s scrimmage will provide an opportunity for non-starters to step up and possibly make a move up the depth chart. Brazil said the most important thing that currently needs to be developed is depth.

The Hawks open the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 against Wylie at Hawk Stadium.

From the Southlake Journal....

Mustangs Should Be Good Test

Wasson said he was pleased with his team’s performance during its inter-squad scrimmage last Saturday. Carroll quarterback Kyle Padron was 17-of-22 for just under 250 yards on about 25 plays. There was good protection from the offensive line, good running by backs Tommy Avers and John Nathan and good effort by the defense as a whole.

However, Wasson expects his team to benefit even more after facing Grapevine in tonight’s scrimmage, Carroll’s only scrimmage of preseason before kicking off the 2008 regular season against Plano West at SMU on Aug. 30.

"We know that Grapevine and Carroll have teed it off and had some great rivalries," Wasson said. "They’re a multiple defensive unit and we expect a lot of pressure, so we’ll see how the offensive line holds up. … They have tight ends and we’re going to see some tight end attachments early, so that should be a good chance to see where we are early on.

"You’ve only got one game to tune up before the regular season starts, so we’ve got to get ready in a hurry," he said. "There’s more of a sense of urgency this time and that’s evident."

Just left the open part of the Carroll / Grapevine scrimmage, with Carroll scoring 6 times to 1 for the Mustangs. The 2nd O and D played the bulk of the time for Carroll while I was there so it doesn't look good for Grapevine. But it's just a scrimmage. It should be fun at SMU next Saturday!

Panthers are looking strong at the Varsity level. FM has good offensive team, but Panther Defense too much for them at the ones. Big play out of DL(THorn and Co) and LBs(BobbyS, TCrouch, and the gang) were evident early. The secondary was in many big collisions with BBarton leading the way, but both corners were huge. #5 is special, and that is all that i will say........... Panther offense is scary good. Look for us to bust loose in the zero week. FM defense is going to light some people up. #30 at SS is a beast. #20 was also big secondary striker. The FM offense will run over some people, very organized, disciplined, and effective. Scrimmages are what they are.....scrimmages. With the lack of tactical influence, and the indiscriminate use of plays we will never see(this one's for you Mr. Scout), it would be hard to measure a game between the two.

At the sub Varsity levels, both programs have developing athletes. But #52(yes, 52) running the ball for the FM second JV group was excellent. FM was very impressive in their overall program. We really enjoyed the intense competition and the camraderie, as we all sat on the same side. Thanks, FM, the shade was nice.

Just returned from the Katy - Strake scrimmage. I think that the KTs have done a good job in rating Katy at number 14 in the state. Despite the massive graduation losses from last year's championship team - the cupboard is not bare for the Tigers this year. I have seen less talented Katy teams make deep playoff runs. The team is a work in progress, but they have enough weapons on both offense and defense to go as far as they decide to go.

Strake is a good team - better than last year's playoff team in my opinion - ought to be a handful for their new district.

back from the Pflugerville - Churchill scrimmage. Panthers looked pretty good. need to hang on to the ball more but the defense is as good as advertised or better. Chargers scored just once. it was a run up the middle missing some tacklers.

doesn't look like the Panthers have settled on a signal caller yet. and while they graduated all their RBs from last year it does appear that we'll have some quality ball carriers

I thought Katy look strong out the gate. The QB is pretty niffty and the WR #17 looks to be a game breaker. The defensive line didn't look as big as in the past, but they got off the ball really quick.

I thought we look good on defense, the offense took a couple of series to get going. Scott hasn't play QB in a couple of years. We were missing a couple of OLineman, but other than that we were at full strength.

Even though it was scrimmage play, that would be a good indicator of what's ahead for Pearland. Highsmith has been on everyones eye for the last three years and this is supposed to be his highlight year. As well, they are supposed to have some prominent athletes on defense. That says a lot about the up and coming Pearland team.

Congrats on a good scrimmage against the Hurricanes!

Westbrook and Michael at rb gave a good Lufkin D all it could handle and then some. He ran for about 150 yards and FOUR td's in the first half against our first unit. They were doubling McFarland as expected - and our lb's were simply not up to the task last night. Even though it was a scrimmage, I'm a bit surprised our first team D was flat in the first half.

Coach Quick and crew have a tough prep week as Lee has Dada Brown coming to play - and he is an equivalent d1 rb for the Red Raiders.

I found this on the Tyler Newspaper online as I was curious myself....

Robert E. Lee Downs San Marcos
WACO -- Robert E. Lee's first-team offense scored once in the opening sessions and put 10 more points on the board in the running half to dominate San Marcos 17-0 Friday in a scrimmage at Waco ISD Stadium.

REL sophomore quarterback Luke Wagner tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nick Hardin and tailback Aaron Myers broke loose for a 60-yard scoring run. Senior kicker Judson Hinsley made both extra points and booted through a 20-yard field goal to account for the first-team's offense in the game.

Lee head coach Mike Owens said REL's second team also scored two touchdowns. The Red Raiders open the season Friday at home against Lufkin.

"We threw and caught the ball really good. If we don't have so many penalties, this would've been a lot better," Owens said. "We told the officials to call it tight, just like a regular game. I am glad they called it like that, because it gives us a chance to emphasize some things."

On defense, Lee performed as advertised. The Red Raiders blanked San Marcos throughout while the first-team unit gave up only one first down. C.J. Johnson intercepted a pass and Lee also forced a fumble.

"I think our defense got better as the game went on," Owens said. "(San Marcos) didn't score at all and I don't know if they made too many first downs (overall)."

The Red Raiders turn their attention to Friday as REL hosts the Panthers Friday at 7:30 p.m. in game 2 of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at TMF Rose Stadium.
