Proof that God hates me (or feels threatened by my growing power), I have been relocated to College Station for a little while until I move on to Houston or, hopefully, Austin. Anyway, I've made a couple of observations...
1. There are more strip malls than people in this f'n town. Seriously, why are there so many damn strip malls? It's a nice town. Very clean and comfortable, but geez. It's starting to creep me out that my neighborhood gas station is in a strip mall.
2. This has been said before by the Aggies so they should not be offended... the A&M campus is ugly as hell. It's a great school as I have said many times, but if A&M has a college of architecture, they should lose accreditation for that abortion of a campus. The old administration building is beautiful, but there is no cohesiveness to the campus at all. Most of it looks like a military base. And the new highrise building on campus on University kind of across from Northgate... it's a beautiful building with the blue glass facade, but it could not possibly look more out of place on campus. Between that and how horrendously spread out the campus is, it's driving me nuts.
3. What the hell is that big airport control tower looking building sitting right in the middle of the campus? Do they land planes at Kyle in the offseason or something?
4. What is the deal with the water? Is this the source of all the Aggie weirdom?

You obviously don't get out much. Set your mouse down and go over to beer cap alley and get a cool beverage and make some friends. They will share Aggie info with you. Imagine a real conversation with humans..... not bots. What a concept. Besides, I'm sure the NEW CROP of MAGGIES have landed by now.......check em out and report back. Inquiring minds want to know.

Your not the only who thinks A&M is one ugly campus.
http://campussqueeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/texasam.gif
18. Texas A&M- There’s not much wrong this campus except for the lack of color. One poster said it’s essentially “BEIGE BEIGE everywhere…” I couldn’t agree more. And, um, “Aggieland”??? Not exactly an appealing phrase, is it? And on their website, they have an extremely strange lack of pictures of their buildings. Just keep adding fuel to my fire, Texas A&M. Knock yourselves out.

I've met a lot of Aggies. Lotta confused freshmen at Freebirds the other day. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time to get out as I have a lot of work to do and I'm splitting time between here and Abilene, but I have met some people. My ex-girlfriend is an A&M grad who tried for years to get me to go to Breakaway at Reed but I never did. I feel bad about that so I plan on dragging my brother and hopefully meeting some people there. I'm also planning on dressing from head to toe in burnt orange with my "Dukakis/Bensten '88" trucker cap and heading over to the Bush Library to meet Firebird, but I work from my computer and it is there that I spend most of my time... for good or bad.

I have only visited college station once for a debate trip in high school. I made sure I wore my burnt orange wind breaker pants, burnt orange shirt and jacket, and a burnt orange trucker hat. I strolled into Freebirds and ordered a super-monster and the guy behind the register asked "You sure... it is pretty big" I said "Maybe for an aggy."
I ended up taking that burrito to go. :D

LOL We saw a bus full of yell leaders in Killeen in 2005 and they all flipped us off since we were wearing our national championship shirts. We yelled out "Yep thanks we are #1"

I know a guy who is a big dirt burglar fan (used to post on here a lot BTW) and he used to talk about wearing a 77-0 t-shirt around College Station during the 7 on 7 state tourney. I don't think he ever did, but I wouldn't mind trying it for a few minutes just to see the reaction.
I've actually been kinda surprised by the number of Texas fans I have seen around here and the amount of Texas gear you can buy. This place isn't quite as I expected. Texas gear readily available and it's not near as Aggified as I was expecting. I was expecting something like an SEC town or something where effigies of rival coaches are burned in parking lots and rivals mascots are hung from traffic lights. Hell, even the graffiti wall at Freebirds was tame. In Gainesville, such a wall would advocate the raping of Georgia's women and include color-coded instructions. Either the Aggies are a far tamer beast than we have been led to believe or they aren't quite the rowdy bunch they think they are. It's like the 2%ers swelled into the 82%ers. Regardless, I blame new army.

2. The campus isn't necessarily pretty, but it's home. I like waking up every morning to a nice view of the water tower and the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences building they're building!
3. Meteorology/Oceanography tower
4. The water does suck. I drink bottled water.

Heck yeah there are a lot of strip malls. Just pick anywhere on Texas Ave. and look in any direction... nothing but strip malls.
The water here scared me at first. My first day here I took a shower and spent 30 minutes trying to wash the soap off. I started freaking out.

The only Longhorn gear I've seen readily available in that town is upside down. This theme is reflected all over the town. There are upside down Horns everywhere, even on the side of buildings.
I go to College Station once a year for 7 on 7. I'm sure it becomes those who attend the university and/or work there like any other place, but it is definitely not my kind of town. I'm convinced half the populace owns a maroon vehicle, and that same percentage also possess something to do with upside down Horns or sawin 'em off. If there exists an Aggie who has nothing but Texas A&M or Aggie gear, I would gladly shake their hand.
Texas A&M is the only school I know of who's school song is really about another school.
And someone ought to do something about that Sexing Livestock Reproduction joint just south of town off 6 (yes, that's actually the name and the G in Sexing is an interlocking male and female symbol). That does nothing to fight the stereotypes.

You haven't looked around much then. The fact that College Station is a college town where the students and their families basically support the local economy should not be a surprise to you to see the town supporting them in EVERY fashion. I think they are very respectful of the fans from other schools. I would like to see you horn fans dress head to toe in yourr burnt orange and go in one of the restaurants in Lubbock close to the campus. I'll bet that billy bad boy attitude you guys throw out around here wouldn't get you very far. From all I have seen it is the fans from UT that go out of their way to cause negative reactions and then try to spin it as Aggies starting the trouble.

There's all sorts of evidence to the contrary on this message board though. Since it seems like it's the UT fans (not you, obviously) that seem to go out of their way to point out the Aggie 'inferiority' or wierdness every chance they get. Granted, most if not all of them have never been students at Texas University.
Having a child at aTm, I'm probably in a pretty good position to observe that neither her nor the numerous alums that I've met through her or others, spend any time at all wondering what they do in Austin. They really could not give a rat's you know what. Sure there will be lots of inverted cow heads, and lots of maroon and white things in College Station. The whole town is practically the University. And UT is its main rival. It's not the state capital, business center, with all the gay bars Austin is. You locate tu in a small town out of the way like BCS is, and you'll get the same thing.

I went for a quick stroll through the mall the other day and saw plenty of Texas gear at Champs, Foot Locker and even what looked like some kind of Aggie Outfitter type store. I even found a large poster of this SI cover for sale...

I merely reported my observations based on the little bit of experience I have in the town. There are some very nice spots around CS in the rolling hills. The town and campus just don't do anything for me, but that's down to personal taste.
Truth be told, I could have easily ended up at A&M or Oklahoma as I was considering a meteorology degree. They happen to have two of the best meteorology programs in the country.

Listen. You don't order a $14 burrito not expecting it to be big. The guy was being a wise *** aggy so I made a wise *** remark straight back.
And who asked for your opinion anyways old man?
That just proves you are a dumb a**. You don't understand the difference between someone trying to be helpful with someone who acts and thinks like you do punk. I know you think you are being funny but you just look like a fool. You go into a restaurant in College Station wearing your burnt orange hoping that someone will call you out and the best you can come up with is the guy asking you if you really want a 1 1/2 pound burrito. classic:rolleyes:

1) Assuming it's still open- take Firebird to Christophers. Definitely not in a strip mall - very good food and drink.
2) jtk and Firebird together is indeed a scary thought.
Christopher's is not inexpensive.
You might try the Hullabulu Cafe in Wellborn too for some great breakfasts.

I'm usually at Christopher's on someone else's nickel - making it not expensive at all. :D

You've given 2,611 opinions dude - lighten up. I always find it funny when people talk about wearing burnt orange in CS, or maroon in Austin - and act like anyone cares.
Here's an idea - just wear clothes and act like an adult.
True story-I went w/some friends to CS one Friday. They went to AM Consol. Their parents worked at a$m. One went on to big things at Tech, but that's another story.
Supposed to be some big keg party with their HS buddies. We drive in from Austin and go the club house they have rented out. Ends up being about 6-7 of us emptying the keg, f which I do more than my part.
It's time to go and we stop at this Whataburger. Don't ask me which one, I have no idea.
Background-it was mid to late January and Ryan Fien a QB from CA and someone else were picked up the weekend before on sixth street for MIP and it was all over the papers. Bobby Taylor was all but committed to a$m at the time and was on his official visit in CS.
OK, so we get to this Whataburger and go in to get our food. It was immediately apparent that this is where the African America athletes were. I saw BT in his Longview letter jacket hanging out w/who I think was Kevin Smith.
WAiting for our food, which as any self respecting college student knows takes forever I go up to the two. I confirm who they are and it is apparent that I am an under the influence sip. I ask BT how he is doing and if he like CS which of course he says yes. I then ask if he heard about the kids going out to 6th street and getting in trouble. He said that he heard about that and laughed a little.
I looked around a bit and said, "Well I guess coming to Whataburger is cool too". Kevin Smith was getting pretty tired of me and my buddy got me out of there, which I am forever thankful for.
Early the next week, BT announced he was visiting Austin and ended up with a surprise commitment to Notre Dame. I don't know that I was the cause of it, but I like to think I was.
My other trips to CS were visiting friends and going to games/etc. Nothing real positive or negative about the place. The campus was somewhat sterile, but that's what I'd expect from a school that has built up so quickly.

I would have gone to A&M to be a meteriologist but I did not go to A&M to be an Engineer. Aggie traditions with an Engineering program in place dictate why.

One time I went to a movie theater in Austin and I wore my Aggie hat, shirt, shorts, and socks. The dude behind the counter asked if I wanted to make my medium coke a large for only a quarter more so I spit in his face and threw the straw dispenser at him.

I have eaten several of those in one sitting. Then asked who wanted to go to the ice cream store next door.
I went to school in Huntsville, But I had a lot of fun in College Stattion. It is a nice town, but I do have to agree their are some ugly structures on that campus.

Later on that day I was walking down 6th street and some guy said "Hey, how about that Holiday Bowl." I punched him in the face and then stole his wallet, who's laughing now, t-sip.
