I finally got a job...I have been working part-time since I graduated a year ago but I just received a great opportunity in the San Antonio area. I have lived my whole life in either Houston or Dallas and I am a little nervous about moving to San Antonio.

Where do I live??...I am 25 and single so I would like to live in an area where there a lot of "young professionals". Any ideas??

Far West if you like it quiet. There are some great apartments/condos along 151 near Sea World. Otherwise, I would say go down there and have an apartment agent take you around for a day or two, but be prepared to choose since they put the time into you. When you are looking around, be sure to pay attention to the whole picture. Who's coming and going and at what time of day. Park your car nearby the area at about 6pm and see who really lives there, don't rely on daytime traffic in and out.

Help me out guys (gals)

North Side, Off of Blanco/1604, or 281 (Stone Oak), or IH-10/1604 area.
Military Highway area (NOT Military Drive). I would think that the area around Sea World might be buzzin with Singles (All the new growth and telemarketing growth out that way), but do NOT know this for a fact.

As for living in SA, Nothing to be nervous about. If you made it through Dallas and Houston, SA should be no biggie.

There's actually a strong yuppie contingent downtown now, but having lived there myself, I wouldn't recommend it. Too many f'n tourists, but there are some nice loft and condo options depending on your budget and willingness to put up with Yankees in jorts.

The North central part of the city from 410 to 1604 and between 10 and 281 is real nice. Lotta great apartments in that area along Bitters, Blanco, Wurzbach, De Zavala, etc. You're not that far from the Medical Center or the Alamo Quarry and there is a lot of crap along 1604. My personal favorite area of the city was just North of downtown along Broadway from Breckenridge park past UIC and that area. It had a nice, bohemian college feel in places.

San Antonio isn't bad at all. In many respects, it's a helluva lot better than Dallas or Houston. It's not exactly the hippest place in the world and, I'll be honest, you are my age and I didn't find a ton to do there so unless you and I have very different ideas on how to have a good time, you may not either. The only thing that bothered me about San Antonio were the lack of options. I had a hard time getting used to the only real grocery stores being HEBs and nothing but Valero gas stations. I left San Antonio swearing I would never step foot in another HEB and I wont.

Look around the medical center. I would say the best part of SA is north at 281 1604 but your going to have to leave an hour early if you want to get to work on time every morning even earlier if you live by Sea World

Alamo Heights is pretty cool, just a little more expensive, for older stuff. It has one of the neatest HEBs around.

:D

AND, depending on where you are in Heights, you might be somewhat close to the area JTK talks about.

There's a Whole Foods at the Alamo Quarry (at least there used to be). That and Central Market (I know, it's an HEB brand) became my savior.

I believe the Alamo Heights area is near Incarnate Word. I liked most of that area, but I will defer to somebody who spent more time there than I.

And seriously, outside of maybe Wal-Mart, I think Valeros were the only gas stations I ever saw.

HEB Central Market. Just an awesome place.

Thing about regular HEBs is that they are fantastic in places where they have competitors, but crap where they are a monopoly. SA is HEB land. But Central Market is really good.

That is very true. The HEBs in San Antonio are teh suck. There was a Central Market on Broadway right next to the UIC campus that I used to frequent all the time. Awesome place indeed and some of their prices can be better than Whole Foods.

The HEB in Heights in which I was referring to, is in fact the Central Market that Firebird and JTK keep salivating over.

Some friends of mine used to live at the Escalante Apartments on W. Bitters. They were VERY nice and you can get a big 1 bedroom for under $800 and a 2 bedroom less than $1000. You can also pay a little extra and get a garage.

I lived in SA 3.5yrs and jtk pretty much summed everything up. Stay North Central or Medical Center area. I didn't care for the North East side (Sorry Judson folks lol). Downtown SA is up and coming.

Jtk is also right when he says there really isn't a ton to do for people our age. Everyone I knew that was my age complained the entire time. lol I had a love-hate relationship with SA. I loved it for certain things and I hated it for other things.

If you have a great opportunity and you're willing to sacrifice a few years in SA then go for it. I don't think I could live there again though. But then again, I grew up in Victoria and was always in SA cause it was 2 hrs away.

Nacodoches and 1604 (headed East from 281 and 1604)
Bandera and 1604 (headed West from 281 and 1604)
DeZavala and UTSA Parkway (West and then a little South)
281 @ Airport (is that one still there) (Headed South from 281 and 1604)
Where is the next one NORTH on 281?

In a lot of Metro areas, you are NEVER more than about ten minutes from a Walmart.

I had that same love/hate relationship. San Antonio is a beautiful city with a wonderful culture and past, but it is rather boring for young adults. The Riverwalk starts to suck real quick and there is no concentration of entertainment outside of that. I spent most of my time at the Alamo Drafthouse and Fox & Hound. There's no 6th Street or Lower Greenville or the like and the high school football is terrible... be prepared for that now.

It's all about perspective. Making the best of the situation. Any native San Antonian will tell you that.

Like my first business flight. I am sitting next to a gentleman that HATES Texas. Can NOT stand it. I ask him to explain.

He is from Boston, MA, born and raised. He joins the Air Force, to see the world.

His first stop? Good Old Lackland AFB. San Antonio. In August! Eight weeks of the hottest damn weather he has EVER seen.

Okay, finally getting away from the blast furnace that is San Antonio. How does the Air Force reward him? His first two years are in, you guessed it, Del Rio Texas. Laughlin AFB!

I think I would hate Texas too.

Doesn't mean that it's all bad. Just got to know where to look.

I think I can put myself in the native San Antonian category. I grew up in Victoria but I had family in SA so I was ALWAYS there. It was easy to be there since it was only 2hrs away. I lived in SA for 3.5yrs as well.

Yes, It's all about perspective. I grew up in Victoria and living in SA felt like I was still living in Victoria. There is really nothing to do for the younger crowd. San Antonio feels like one big suburb and I'm not a surburban guy. Dallas is a lot better for me....its no NYC, but its the best in TX in my opinion.

The last year in SA was total hell for me. I couldn't wait to get out. Like I said before...I have a love hate relationship with SA....but I'm glad I don't live there when I go back to visit friends.

My co workers and I were having some of these discussions just this morning, but comparing vacation to being at home.

What is it specifically, that you are looking for in a place to live?

Only you can make that decision.

Once you have done that, prioritize the next four things that are important to you.

See how they fit in your decision.

Movie theatres? Shopping? Close to work? Close to GOOD resturants? Close to good Night life? Close to lakes, hiking, Outdoor life? Traffic flow to and from work? A Home owners Association?

:D

All sorts of things to figure.

I lived in Manchester, VT. It is about 30 mins south of Rutland and 30 mins north of bennington.

How did you like it? I've always had Vermont and New Hampshire as places I could see myself settling down in.

The most gorgeous and peaceful place in the US. It is in the middle of nowhere but there is plenty to do. If you like fishing, the batenkill river has the best trout fishing in the US. All of the lakes and streams are crystal clear...but cold. Tons of random swimming holes and water filled rock quarries. The stars are the brightest I have ever seen. The rolling green mountains are breathtaking...especially from the top of one. Since you like photography you will be able to take an unlimited amount of incredible shots....you will prolly run out of batteries several times in fall when the leaves change colors.

This is the town I lived in...Manchester Village. Lots of boutique hotels, the equinox resort, huge outlet shopping mall, and a few unbelievable golf courses.

Obviously, the winters suck...but there is skiing. I found this picture...straight ahead is the high school....immediately to the right of this picture is the 4 story house that my friends and I lived in. Mount equinox is right behind the school.

A lot more that JUST Sea World. Again, what are the major attractions to living in a particular area.

Let's say that it depends on where you work.

Boeing and their support businesses are out that direction.

Lot of Telecom places are out that direction.

Microsoft is out that direction.

Yep, Sea World is out that direction.

Sports, maybe?

Nelson Wolf Stadium is out that direction, if you like Baseball.

Medina Lake is out that direction, if you want water.

Food?

Some of the best Cajun in San Antonio, The Acadiana Cafe, is out that direction.

Southwest Research

Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research

Gustafson Stadium,

Farris Stadium is on the Western edge.

I personally wouldn't go much past Bandera and 1604 (to the East) for living, but that is just me.
