Leander ISD school board voted 6-1 to demolish the famed former Odessa stadium for a new one due to finding lead in the paint primer. It was going to be cost prohibitive to sandblast, then re-prime and paint with all the enviromental issues we deal with in today's society. Sorry to see the history go, but LISD will now have not one, but TWO brand new structures to accomodate football games in the near future!!! Work to begin on the "new Bible" within 30 days after the end of the 2008 football season in order to get it ready for play for the 2009 season. Stadium #2 which will be shared by Cedar Park and Vista Ridge will probably start construction a little after this. Glad to see LISD join the 21st century as for as its athletic venues go finally!!!!
Will one of them be The New Testament?

In earlier posts, one of the Leander folks was talking about adding 2 more HS in the LISD in the near future. It sounds like LISD will be building 3 new stadiums soon. Just curious, if CP and VR will be sharing a stadium, who will Leander share a stadium with ? It is too bad a piece of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is being demolished, but you guys in LISD really do need a new field.

I may have to make a trip to Leander for one last game in old W.T. Barrett Stadium. I spent a lot of time there growing up and actually froze completely to the core at least twice. (It was the beginning of Cryogenics and it is rumored that Walt Disney was brought to the stadium for his final transformation into a Popsicle.) The stadium was down sized a bit when reconstructed in Leander. Originally the stadium went from the ends of the end zone on both sides (120 yards a side) and held at least 20,000. The stadium was built as a result of Odessa High's 1946 state championship. (http://www.texasbob.com/fb_stategame.html)Then the MOJO years began and the rest as they say is history.
A great venue for High School football. I've always appreciated the fact that Leander took and maintained the stadium and gave it a longer life.

Sounds great -- can someone there talk to Klein ISD? We will gladly send you our stadium to replace Bible! (dosn't hurt to ask, heck you took one before)

Thanks for the info Country Club! There also will be a smaller "4A" size stadium to be built for the high school or schools around the "four points" area which should accomodate @5,000 with ability to expand to 7,500 with growth in LISD. Main concern is to get new Bible up and running before 2009 games begin or else LISD will be looking to rent a stadium for three high school varsity teams plus JV team for high school #4.

Hate to see it go. I went to Permian and graduated in '77. I saw alot of football played there in Odessa and now in Leander. My son goes and plays for Vista Ridge, so I'm glad they will get a new stadium in '09.
